Breitbart Distorts Obama Quote on American Muslims, Commenters Spew Bigotry and Hatred

Wingnuts • Views: 32,010

Over the weekend, President Obama issued the following press release on the occasion of Eid al-Fitr, at the close of Ramadan:

As Muslims throughout the United States and around the world celebrate Eid-al-Fitr, Michelle and I extend our warmest wishes to them and their families. This last month has been a time of fasting, reflection, spiritual renewal, and service to the less fortunate. While Eid marks the completion of Ramadan, it also celebrates the common values that unite us in our humanity and reinforces the obligations that people of all faiths have to each other, especially those impacted by poverty, conflict, and disease.

In the United States, Eid also reminds us of the many achievements and contributions of Muslim Americans to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy. That is why we stand with people of all faiths, here at home and around the world, to protect and advance their rights to prosper, and we welcome their commitment to giving back to their communities.

On behalf of the Administration, we wish Muslims in the United States and around the world a blessed and joyous celebration. Eid Mubarak.

Here’s how breitbart.com reported it:

On Sunday, President Obama and First Lady Michelle released a statement thanking Muslim Americans for their many “achievements and contributions… to building the very fabric of our nation and strengthening the core of our democracy.”
The comments were made to mark the celebration of Eid-al-Fitr, a time of spiritual renewal for Muslims which comes at the end of the month-long fast of Ramadan. The Obamas said in their statement that Eid “celebrates the common values that unite us in our humanity” and “welcomed their commitment to giving back to their communities.” The International Business Times reports that during Eid, Muslims join in Islamic prayer, while saying “Allahu Akbar,” or “God is Great,” and feasting.

The statement further reads that the administration “wishes Muslims in the United States and around the world a blessed and joyous celebration.” The letter ended with salutation of “Eid Mubarak,” which roughly means “blessed celebration.”

The headline was enough to unleash the bigot brigade:

Contributions??? You mean like INSULTING everyone by putting a mosque at GROUND ZERO?

How about thanking Christians and Jews for THEIR contributions to this country - you know, like FOUNDING it? Ah, that’s right…that would offend our Jihadist-in-Chief!

=====

Some of the muslim “contributions” are:
1. 9-11.
2. Benghazi.
3. The Boston Marathon.
4. Nidal Hasan.
5. Muhammad & Malvo.
6. Daniel Pearl.
7. Lee Rigby (I know he was British).
Feel free to add a few of your own muslim “contributions” to the US.

=====

It’s not Muslims with the significant intellectual contributions, it is the Persians with a few things to brag about. Persians are responsible for the majority of all notable Islamic achievements in literature, art, government, science, theology, education, philosophy, and architecture.

=====

Well, that and all of the technology and science they got from the Byzantines and the Ptolemaic Greeks in Egypt. It became Muslim when they were forced to become Muslims or have their heads cut off.

=====

inquisition mo-ham-head style

=====

why would Muslims follow a guy that’s called Mo Ham head? I thought they hated pork.

=====

All of our bullets should be coated in bacon fat.

=====

Exactly! People should read the Koran and a little history. They would realize what BS the Islamic “contributions” to the world are in fact

=====

Islam was created by a lunatic pedophile

And on and on it goes, down the intellectual toilet that is breitbart.com, and American movement conservatism.

On a somewhat related note is the following plea:

Democrats, Liberals, Progressives, Moderates, and the politically apathetic - if you stay home in November like you did in 2010, people who reflect the above mentality will be elected - chronically misinformed, deranged, and demented. I know many of you aren’t thrilled with Democrats and President Obama, and there is good reason to feel that way. But if you express your dismay by sitting this election out, our government could be in the hands of dangerously unstable people.

I will step off the soap box now.

Netanyahu ended his speech with a traditional Arabic blessing wishing Muslims an easy fast.

Can you imagine the shitstorm if Obama did that?

THE PRESIDENT: Good evening, and welcome. Over the past eight years, we have made the Iftaar dinner an annual tradition here at the White House. And I’m really glad we did. At this year’s gathering, we pay special tribute to the many contribution Muslim Americans have made to our nation. We join in wishing Muslims around the world, “Ramadan Mubarak.”

I send greetings to Muslims observing Ramadan in America and around the globe.

The holy month of Ramadan is a special time of prayer, fasting, and service. For Muslims, these days commemorate the revelation of God’s word to the prophet Muhammad in the form of the Qur’an.

I thank the men and women of the Muslim community for their contributions to America. Your love of family, and gratitude to God have strengthened the moral fabric of our country. Our Nation is stronger and more hopeful because of the generosity, talents, and compassion of our Muslim citizens.

Laura and I send our best wishes. Ramadan Mubarak.

It is only a matter of time before it happens in a big way.

There is something besides bigot-pandering media at work here. In my experience much anti-Muslim propaganda flows through the de facto network of fundamentalist churches that can be found in every corner of the country. This is especially true of the free lance non-denominational churches who don’t have bishops or other higher-ups to tell them to cool it. These churches are independent of accountability but they tend to use the same books, watch the same videos, and invite the same guest speakers.
I’ve mentioned the person who told me that Muslims always plan to take over and institute “shahara law” as soon as they reach 3% of the population in a given area. She got this precise sounding information from a guest speaker at her church, an unaffiliated Bible church in Lubbock. This seems to be fairly common. I hear fantastic claims all the time that I know did not come from even such crazed media sources as Pamela Gellar or Rush Limbaugh.

Not this “they’re both equally bad” crap again.

I used to heavily feel that way. And then the GOP made the choice between “bad” and “f**king insane”.

Beyond that there are a lot of people who simply give up on politics outside of local races. Sick of the rhetoric, and make the plausible decision that the time spent to make a logical decision on which candidate to support is worth less than the value of their vote in the election, at least at the state and national level.

Where this fails is that in the face of the current monolithic party format where they almost universally vote en bloc and no longer have “wings” within the party voting for a candidate that looks good on a local level can empower a party that is reprehensible in their policies on a national level.

And at this point I also suspect that their is some vested interest in generating as much voter apathy and feelings of hopelessness as possible since that helps depress voting numbers and plays to one party’s current advantage.

I’m sorry your takeaway on Hobby Lobby was that voting doesn’t matter?

Mine was that it does immensely, because that’s how the people on the SCOTUS are decided on. And I might be pissy as hell at the folks who put Bush into office years before I was able to vote and have had so much influence on my life, but my response to that is to VOTE so it doesn’t happen again.

The way to fix voter apathy is not to keep telling us to VOTE MOAR, because we have personal experience that it doesn’t work. The system itself needs to be fundamentally fixed if you want to get people excited about voting. “Choose the shit that stinks least” is not a sustainable motivator.

Jesus, of course voting works. You’re complaining about Supreme Court decisions? Imagine the decisions if instead of Kagan and Sotomayor we had two picks from Romney. How is getting Kagan and Sotomayor onto the bench not ‘working’?

I agree that you need to get people excited, but what you’re saying is that because the GOP are obstructionists there’s no point in voting. That’s a lousy idea.

And how does one go about fundamentally fixing the system without voting? You go first.

And FERGAWDSAKE don’t be one of those wusses who says “Bush and Gore are the same, I’m voting Nader.”

88 ObserverArt  Jul 29, 2014 11:15:59am

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I am pretty sure you can’t build much of anything (especially a whole country) without a little use of mathematics, especially algebra.

Wait a minute…algebra…al gebra…al jebr…why that sounds down right Muslim!!!

And one other thing…is John Boehner really the house majority leader??? Doesn’t seem like it. He doesn’t even have the ability to understand how many of his Republican reps are out and about beating the drum for impeachment. Someone please give BoehnHead the news!

My brother voted Nader. Then again he knew that since he lived in New York state that the electoral votes were going to Gore in any case.

In my congressional race I can choose between a guy who thinks a zygote has more rights than I do, and someone who believes the opposite.

Maybe you just need something more personal on the line to see a distinction.

I’m trying to decide if I should imagine this in a Bob Hope voice or Woody Allen voice. In both cases they’re slowly backing away and fumbling behind their backs for a doorknob.

I’m not dissatisfied with Pres. Obama, and I guess it has to do with having seen American presidents in action since Eisenhower was in office. I don’t view President Obama as a failure, but I do see the republicans as having failed to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of office. There is only so much any president can do since we do have three branches of government, and one and one-half of the three is under the control of batshit crazy people—the Supreme Ct. and the House. If our president had the powers of a dictator and wasn’t able to accomplish anything, then, I might be disappointed. Another reason I’m not disappointed and/or dissatisfied with this president has to do with being an older Black American. Based on my life and experience, I can say without a doubt that the few rabble rousers and racists that still live among us have behaved the same way in the 21st Century as they behaved when I was growing up in the South under Jim Crow laws over 50 years ago. If these tools don’t get their way, they’re willing to destroy the nation in order to get revenge for losing “something” they think should only belong to them. This is what’s been going on since January 2009—the rabble rousers and racists are pissed about losing two presidential elections to a democrat. They’re insulted when a democrat wins the presidency, and that this one is black is unconscionable to them because the White House belongs to white, Christian, heterosexual males. They have done everything within their power to destroy this president, their fellow citizens who don’t agree with them, and the nation, including showing the world their ignorant asses, as these comments on Breitbart’s site show.
