Sen. Marco Rubio Scolds and Expels DREAM Protesters

The party of xenophobia
Politics • Views: 40,230

YouTube

This video is making the rounds today, because it’s a sad look at how extreme and insane the Republican Party has become in the Tea Party era. Marco Rubio, once considered a pro-immigration Republican who favored the DREAM Act, scolds a group of Latino protesters in front of an angry crowd of old white people, and then has them expelled from the room.

The GOP continues its slide into the worst kind of xenophobic craziness.

I wish I could say that I’m surprised that Rubio’s a massive prick, but the man met that dubious distinction long ago.

The big tent GOP is dead. This is exhibit A.

They are pushing out anyone who diverges from their ideology even the slightest bit on even single issues.

Ideological purity is what drives them.

But it also blinds them to the fact that so few people agree with their ideology at the national level, that they are going to continue losing national elections and slide into a regional party alone - and that’s mostly because gerrymandering of districts makes their strongholds safe from challenges.

3 Belafon  Aug 26, 2014 5:45:40pm

If someone could find a way to make that translate into voters in Texas, all sorts of cool things would happen.

I guess Marco has given up on being president.

What? You say he is thinking of running.

Well, he shouldn’t. He isn’t going anywhere now.

Lawhawk’s right, as usual, Charles. We all know that Rubio has no other option. It’s Go Full Wingnut or Go Home.

And that is going to come back to bite them squarely in the ass. Nobody wants wingnuts in power except, well, wingnuts. And despite the deluge of derp with which we have been dealing, there really aren’t THAT many wingnuts out there.

Exactly. If even *one* of the Full Metal Wingnuts who ran against Romney last time hadn’t sequentially imploded, there’s a fair-to-middlin chance Mittens wouldn’t have gotten the nod. And it’s much worse for ‘16. A pro-business Trad Republican doesn’t really stand a chance in this environment, it seems to me. Certainly not in the South.

12 ObserverArt  Aug 26, 2014 5:55:05pm

Is there going to be one Republican that will take a stand against the RWNJs and try to run as what was once considered a moderate GOPer?

I know it will be hard, but if someone wants to at least score some points for being their own person and a conservative that is a freer thinker, this ‘16 election will be ideal.

Maybe some youngster conservative can start to take a moderate position and start building for 2 or 3 elections down the road.

Whoa!!! Okay, what was I thinking???

Sorry. ///

And the thing is, if such a dumbass were to survive to win the nomination, they would have to make a hard swerve to the left to be anything resembling electable - and that would alienate their base and torpedo their chances. So they’re screwed either way: Take a hard-right line, win the nomination, and get completely shafted in the general election; or take a hard-right line just to win the nomination, swerve back to center-right, and get shanked by your own party because you went all soft and liberal on them.

From another article about the event:

[…]

Outside the civic center, one of the immigration hecklers — Charlotte, North Carolina, resident Oliver Merino — promised to hound Rubio with similar protests wherever he goes. Merino, a member of the DREAM Organizing Network, a group that works to halt immigrant deportations, scoffed at the notion that Rubio could win over Hispanic voters if he secures the Republican nomination.

“He wants people like me to be deported,” Merino said. “He doesn’t stand with our community. We want people to know that. Wherever he goes, we will let him know that.”

It is a puzzlement!

And the delicious irony is that it’s what the Koch’s wrought. They thought by supporting the original Tea Party movement, they would foster an environment of distrust for The Prez so they could get a lighter regulatory hand on business, especially by the EPA.

97 Archangelus  Aug 26, 2014 7:00:28pm

Rubio’s actions remind me of something a fellow Democrat once said (of which i’m still skeptical personally) when asked why he’s not too concerned about the party not doing enough to reach voters: “There’s no need to get out and try to convince folks to vote for us when the Republican loonies are already doing it in such a spectacular fashion..”

Not as optimistic as he is and still worried the party isn’t doing enough, but the closer we get to election day, I’m gradually starting to think he may be right after all…

98 DesertDenizen  Aug 26, 2014 7:00:42pm

You can’t tell me a motorcycle isn’t a lethal weapon. One of our local small town cops shot a suspect who charged him on a bike a year or so ago, and no one questioned the validity of the shoot. Based on the behavior of some of the attendees, drawing a sidearm doesn’t seem unreasonable to me.

[Jim Hoft] Sources close to the top brass in the Highway Patrol have leaked a photo of the unarmed white kids on bikes that Captain Johnson was threatening with deadly force. [/jim Hoft]

Excessive Force by Black Police Captain?

string of bizarre events that involved methamphetamine, tasers, and public masturbation

i never get to have any fun

re: #86 Charles Johnson

In any case, taser or gun, it DOES NOT MATTER. He was dealing with a violent group of lawbreakers, not some harmless “unarmed white kids on bikes.” Freaking unreal.

Actually, these people are the real race baiters. They can gripe about 1980 Rev. Al all they want.

They are the race baiters 2014

102 Gus  Aug 26, 2014 7:05:02pm

They’re not even bikers. Bikers as in the guys with the Harleys and choppers. Just a bunch of ninja bike morons.

103 Gus  Aug 26, 2014 7:05:24pm

Bikers, Harley guys, don’t ride like assholes.

They are near the bottom of the douche barrel.

Johnson was also probably one of the only black LEOs there. Adding to the race bait bullshit from Hoft. What a dick.

re: #97 Archangelus

Rubio’s actions remind me of something a fellow Democrat once said (of which i’m still skeptical personally) when asked why he’s not too concerned about the party not doing enough to reach voters: “There’s no need to get out and try to convince folks to vote for us when the Republican loonies are already doing it in such a spectacular fashion..”

Not as optimistic as he is and still worried the party isn’t doing enough, but the closer we get to election day, I’m gradually starting to think he may be right after all…

Truth. VOTING is the hope

So what are those innocent kids on bicycles doing on a divided freeway? With a police roadblock no less.

Just had dinner with my friend whose mother of his children died suddenly on Sunday. Probably one of the saddest spectacles I’ve ever been a part of. His youngest (just started 3rd grade) is still in denial. He kept asking “Why is mommy in heaven?”

My friend is taking it well, considering the circumstances. I actually heard him laugh a few times times. But he confided in me tonight that he’s the most scared he’s ever been in his life. His ex-wife was a rock in that family, she was everything for those kids. Now he has to raise them alone.

Ugh. My heart aches.

116 teleskiguy  Aug 26, 2014 7:19:34pm

OK, time to cheer up. I saw this on The Simpsons.

b_Sharp, I’m looking at you.

Deleted. I’m not going to post something contentious on a thread that has just been superseded.

Snark on, commenter.
