Mike Dawes performs Encomium (Reverie) from the album ERA.

‘Encomium has always been a special tune for me since its inception. It’s actually my first tune with a guitar pick (such a bizarre statement) but it’s also one of my favourite pieces to play, and get totally lost in. Thanks to the Tonewood Amp device for the inspiration (http://tonewoodamp.com)

Inspired by Michael Hedges and the song Dirge, Encomium is a celebration of creativity without expectation. I think that creators often struggle to find a balance between their own honest expression and what they feel is expected of them by the public. I’ve spent so long playing what’s considered pretty ‘technical music’ that it’s come to define who I am throughout my journey so far. With songs like ‘Encomium’ from the ERA album, I’m trying to embrace what made me fall in love with the guitar in the first place, the vibration of the strings and the power of the instrument. I’m so happy to have teamed up with the talented Merrick Winter for this video, filmed at the North American Guitar showroom in Islington, London. I hope you enjoy the video and don’t forget to subscribe!’

re: #202 William Lewis

Franco, Pinochet, Reagan & Thatcher - if there is any justice in the universe, they’ll be roommates in hell for eternity.

Franco and Pinochet, absolutely. They were murderous, thuggish dictators.

Reagan and Thatcher? Nah. Maybe an extended period in Limbo. They were simply political animals of their time. They weren’t intrinsically evil, just ignorant of the results of the economic public policies that they pushed and how it would result in the huge inequalities in both the US and the UK today.

Great tune, by the way, Charles. Just lovely.

But guitar strings don’t actually *do* that, do they? I’m assuming it’s an effect of the speed of the recording, kind of like standing waves or how hubcaps sometimes appear to be turning backwards.

The Persistence of Vision.

I’ve done two Vegas trips since 2015. I was there to see Umphrey’s McGee at Brooklyn Bowl first and foremost. But I wandered, checked out the scene. And I gambled. All told, I’ve spent five nights in Vegas, in all that time I gambled for maybe a few hours. I’m happy to say that I never lost money. I never won big, but one time I got $100 worth of chips and a half hour later I cashed in $180 worth of chips. I used that windfall to eat at the Caesar’s Palace buffet for dinner that night and drinks at the UM concert.

What I’m saying is, I’m not the gambling type. Playing with money is an odd concept to me.

One of my oldest friends has always had a conservative streak, but the election of Obama in ‘08 has had him become so extreme that he is “inclined to believe” Obama was born in Kenya, and that “BHO” “intentionally divided the races for political gain” and that whites are being “persecuted for privedge.” And he’s a true believer in Trump. I think I’ve found a way to reach him and let him know the real story, but it’s a zlog. Let me tell you.

Gambling is fun, unless you are gambling with money that you *need*, in which case it’s not much fun at all, because the odds are with the House, and you will probably lose that money.

It’s like any other risky behavior, like using drugs and booze. It’s giving in to the endorphin rush.

You need to step away and determine that what you are willing to risk does not overlap with what you *need*. If you do that, fine, have fun. You are risking what you are happily willing to lose. If you don’t use that logical process, you are an addict, and it’s going to eat you alive.

And it’s coming up on One Annie Mama here in South Austin, where there are covered pots of boiled water (Three minutes!) on the stove for drinking, and it’s again droozling outside, with the remnants of Willa screaming through South Texas tomorrow.

A boil-ban is a royal pain in the ass. Night all, sweet scaly dreams.

The reality of American politics right now is that factcheckers waste time looking into this stuff, yet:

A) Trump doesn’t give a shit, so that by the time you’ve proven him wrong, he’s already moved on to the next lie

B) His supporters thinks he tells nothing but the truth and anybody fact checking him can be dismissed as “liberal.”

C) The media prints what he says verbatim and then argues that he’s “brilliant” for making people waste time proving he’s a liar when he’s already moved on.

That’s not the way the world really works anymore. We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you are studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. I’m with you. I don’t see what’s so exciting about gambling. It seems like basic math to me. An individual card or roll might be random, but the longer you go, the more the math grinds out the inevitable.

That said, the last time I was in Vegas, I won $70 on the slots. Also just used on some drinks and food.

The second place prize - matching 5 numbers only - in California, for a big jackpot draw, is usually a decent size. I expect the 5-number prize pool to be over $3M, maybe $5M.

But there are often multiple winners. From the MM drawing yesterday:

Lottery officials say 8 tickets were sold in California that matched 5 of the 6 numbers needed to win. Each ticket is worth a so far undetermined prize. But none won the grand prize.

Even the notorious Roulette table pays much better than the state lotteries.

Picking a correct number on a Roulette wheel has a 1 in 37 chance and if won pays 35x. Vastly better return than MegaMillions or PowerBall in their non-jackpot prizes.

For my freshmen’s quiz this week, I pulled a story from VOA about the lottery. Not sure if they’ve paid any attention to it, but it might it good for a class discussion.

China has a “sports lottery,” the proceeds of which go to support education and I assume other things. One of my friends in my previous location runs a sports lottery shop, and seems to do OK financially. I reckon he does not play the lottery himself.

re: #61 wheat-dogg

As I keep repeating, the state lotteries here are horrible payouts, compared to other gambling venues.

The reason the lotteries do the 5+1 game is that it puts all the attention on the jackpot so people don’t notice how miserly the payout is on the five regular balls.

There is a huge disconnect in the payout between the 5 number winner(s) and the jackpot winners.

It’s only 25x less likely to get all six numbers, but the payout difference is often several hundreds times.

Instead, if the lotteries just ran with 6 regular balls instead of 5+1, and had the balls numbered from 1 to 28, the resulting odds would be roughly the same for winning the jackpot (6 numbers), but the odds for just 5 would be much better than current payout for 5 (or 4 or 3) balls.

An explosive device was found on Wednesday morning by a technician who screens mail for Bill and Hillary Clinton, who live in a suburb of New York City, a law enforcement official said.

The official said the device was similar to one found at the home of billionaire philanthropist George Soros on Monday.

It was not immediately clear where the device was found.

Mr. Soros’s home is also in a suburb north of New York City. That device was constructed from a length of pipe about six inches long filled with explosive powder, and it was “proactively detonated” by bomb squad technicians, according to one of the officials, all of whom were briefed on the investigation.

And of course I have nutters immediately replying that Antifa tried to poison people. It never fucking ends.

I see that. DARVO, it’s what’s for dinner in conservatism.

Getting a ton of adverts paid by Americans for Prosperity attacking Claire McCaskell now on her “oh my god she wants to abort everyone!” positions. Gotta love having an ISP a thousand miles away. They’re also attacking her for promoting teenagers being able to get an abortion without parental consent. (I don’t know if that is true or not, but I understand exactly why that is necessary.)

Would be nice to see adverts about Jane Raybould, since we have a Senate race here as well. Pro-McCaskill adverts are also airing on things like YouTube and Hulu.

It would help Democratic messaging if they figured out a lot of the rural parts of our state have out-of-state Internet service. There is nothing prohibiting a pro-Jane Raybould advert from being put on our ISP in Missouri.

Well, I wonder which MOTHERFATHERING Trumpette sent a bomb to Bill and Hillary’s house.

Them KKKraKKKers didn’t stop there. They also sent a bomb to Obama’s office.

And my goodness looks like the same type of device that was sent to George Soros.

FUCK THE REPUBLIKKKLANS!

nytimes.com

Two explosive devices were found in mail sent to the offices of former President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, a law enforcement official said Wednesday.

The devices were similar to one found on Monday at the home of the billionaire philanthropist George Soros, the official said.

E-mail to Ben Sasse:

Senator Sasse:

It is no longer acceptable for you to simply “show your concern” at the “lack of civility” in politics.

You positioned yourself during the GOP Primary as a so-called “never Trumper” and wrote a Facebook post which appeared in every newspaper in the state. Then of course you became party uber alles.

Mr. Trump’s rhetoric has become dangerous and you know it. Bombs mailed to George Soros, Hillary and Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama are all evidence of this. You still support this man.

The endless calls for “civility” from GOP Senators and Representatives are the calls of the oppressor on the oppressed. They are no different than Jim Crow.

I fully expect you as my Senator in the strongest possible terms to denounce this terrorism and demand the President cease his attacks on the press, calling Democrats “the enemy,” and encouraging violence.

The alternative is to assume you support it. That makes you un-American.

Call out in public the President’s rhetoric today. Show us you care about your country and your state, not grasping at power.

rhuarc  Oct 24, 2018 • 7:33:01am

I can’t even.

So yesterday a friend posted on FB that she was having problems figuring out who to vote for. She lives in Texas. So quite a few friends chimed in about why you shouldn’t vote for Republicans and gave very valid reasons. Of course, the other side had the normal, logical responses one would expect from them. LOL! Just kidding. Anyway, she ended up deleting the post and then reposting that she didn’t want to make it about politics and name calling and blah, blah, blah.

Then this morning I wake up, check the ‘ol FB, and see that this same person had a long post about how she was sexually assaulted last night at a grocery store by a douchebag who grabbed her ass, claimed he was reaching for a freezer door handle, then told her that she shouldn’t wear tight pants out in public. So once again, friends jumped in and said after this happened why are you having problems figuring out who to vote for. One side clearly condones this behavior and wants it stopped while the other side clearly supports it by action and words and thinks women are dirty, slutty liars. And she can’t figure out why politics was brought into this again.

I just can’t even understand the extreme twisting of logic it takes to try and justify how these things aren’t even related.

What worries me is that with a passport with an M on it, the F that I was granted as one of the last to only need a psych’s note for it, on my driver’s license, would have to become an ‘M’ as well.

Caravan: there could be people with guns in the caravan, will the military have to shoot back? Very concerned, will there be any shooting? US should go into Mexico and intercept. Mob, organized, 14,000, MS-13, bad people, etc

You know, Sarah, your statement might hold a little bit of water if your boss hadn’t openly advocated violence against media members during the last week, including giving cover for the murder of an American journalist by the Saudi Arabian government, and complimenting a Republican member of Congress who assaulted a reporter.

Then again, your fanbase has always believed that killing your political opponents is a valid tactic.

Ah. Then you don’t play megaplier for MM/power play for Powerball. I’d never touch one of their tickets without it myself. The payouts are still low compared to even a casino, but for an extra dollar per play, they rise a little above the realm of ‘bad joke’.

Forex, since it was a megaplier ball of 3 that got pulled last night, any of those CA tickets that played it and hit the 5 would pay out at 1.5M before taxes, not 500K.

CNN President Jeff Zucker told employees in an email Wednesday not to share images or geotags “that would reveal your location,” following the removal of a suspicious device from CNN’s New York City offices.

“We have no particular reason to be concerned, but just think it would be the most cautious approach,” Zucker wrote. Zucker also said in the email that the network is “putting up magnetometers at the entrances” of its Atlanta headquarters; the facility is open to the public.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Hopping in because of the ongoing terrorist incidents directed at Soros, Clintons, and Obama (and perhaps CNN and DSW and other media outlets).

The list of targets reads like a Trump enemies list. It is the kind of thing a right wing domestic terrorist would do. The targets are political in nature. The act itself is a political act. It’s a classic definition of terrorism.

So, even if the devices were intercepted before they reached their intended targets, they put lives at risk.

We’re not talking about suspected devices. The authorities are indicating that these were in fact explosive devices, so the purpose was to kill and maim.

It therefore isn’t surprising that right wing extremists are trying to deflect and downplay the significance of today’s terrorist attacks:

Gaffney is on the NSC. Yeah, his inability to identify the problem, the threat, and instead claims that this is a problem kinda flies in the face of how he views Islamic terrorism where the mere call to violence should be responded to with massive and overwhelming force.

(That he’s getting ratio’d is also quite appropriate).

re: #243 lawhawk

This was a premeditated and broad attack against those opposed to Trump. The person(s) responsible wanted to do harm to those who have loudly opposed Trump and the right wing extremists.

So Trump is pretty much silent about the terror attacks - mostly because it points at right wing domestic terrorists who have been emboldened by Trump and the GOP and whose white nationalist agenda matches up with the goddamned Nazis who support Trump.

What’s next, canceling an election until we get to the bottom of going on?- Trump, maybe.

Gaffney is trying to downplay the terror attack because the bombs didn’t detonate in the faces of their intended targets (the act itself is an act of terrorism; that they didn’t blow up is in part luck and skill/dedication of LEOs).

And watch how the media will pivot away from the right wing domestic terrorist angle and how the GOP from top down incites their minions to violence and ignore all the norms and values of a democratic/representative society because it’s all about winning at all costs and eliminating your political enemies

Also, from the “What the Actual Fuck is Wrong With People” File:

Professional skateboarder Julie Lynn Kindstrand Nelson, who goes by “Julz Lynn,” detailed the allegations to the Costa Mesa (California) Police Department on Oct. 11, providing a detective with a six-page letter describing interactions with[USA Skateboarding Executive Committee Member Neal] Hendrix. The letter, also provided to espnW, states that when she was between the ages of 14 and 15 and Hendrix was in his early 30s, she performed sex acts on him at his request. The letter also states that he masturbated in front of her, photographed and took videos of her while she was naked and showed her pornography involving underage girls.

This happened about 10 years ago, it looks like. Hendrix is/was a pro skateboarder, had won medals at the X-Games. And is also apparently a creep:

Kindstrand Nelson’s letter provides an exhaustive examination of incidents that she says happened while she was pursuing a professional skateboarding career. She says Hendrix groomed her over time, taking advantage of a period of grief after her grandparents died. She says she and Hendrix met at a California skatepark in 2006, when he was in his early 30s. She told espnW that she viewed him as a friend and a mentor. Not long after they met, Hendrix started bringing her to his apartment for what he called “sex lessons,” she said in her letter. She said the sexual misconduct lasted until 2008.

Secret Service intercepts suspicious packages sent to Obama, Hillary Clinton (FOX News, more at the link):

The Secret Service said Wednesday that officers “intercepted” two suspicious packages identified as “potential explosive devices” sent to former President Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, as reports of other potential threats against political and media targets led to evacuations in a rapidly evolving security scare.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced at a press conference that a “device” was also sent to his Manhattan office.

Local reports said the Florida building housing the office of Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, former Democratic Party chairwoman, was evacuated amid reports of a possible suspicious package. Police in the area seemed to confirm the incident in a Twitter alert:

CNN employees were evacuated as well from their New York office, after reports of a suspicious package at the Time Warner Center. CNN said the package with a suspicious device was addressed to ex-CIA director John Brennan (who is an analyst for NBC).

At a press conference, NYPD Commissioner James O’Neill said officers on the scene identified what “appeared to be a live explosive device” as well as an envelope containing white powder, which is now being investigated.

“What we saw here today was an effort to terrorize,” New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said. “This clearly is an act of terror.”

Did anyone mention that Governor Cuomo confirmed that his office got one of these things?

Cuomo’s not a national Democrat. If the bomber was a NY resident I wouldn’t be surprised.

So, any idea of what effect , if any, this will have on the election.
Will if frighten Democrats into voting or not voting (see NRA spokes bot threat)?
Will it cause Republicans to question the direction of the party?

Bombs at home sure make a bunch of women and children a thousand mile south seem laughable as a threat.

CBS now downplaying the significance of the bombs: The Unibomber’s bombs were very sophisticated and he went to great lengths to hide where he built them. These bombs are not sophisticated.

Just got done voting here in Northern Wisconsin. Straight ticket Dem except for two running as independent for local offices because the Democratic party charges too much for them (or so I’ve been told).

Bullshit. One side knits pussy hats. The other side mails bombs.

Not to conservatives. Democrats are false flagging to divert attention from an invasion of illegal voters!!!

Weird how it’s like the bomber writes down the names of everyone your rapist daddy attacks and lies about daily, then mails them bombs.

(Are we sure Eric isn’t the bomber trying to win daddy’s approval?)

i have read this as recently as today, so….

Weird: I was just discussing the mail bombs with my spouse, and she opined that it was probably a Trump family member behind them: to which I responded that it would be incredibly stupid for them to do something like this (at least without some sort of remove), but then, again, she reminded me: “Trump family”…..

re: #372 Anymouse 🌹

Not to conservatives. Democrats are false flagging to divert attention from an invasion of illegal voters!!!

7 to 10 thousand people that might not even make it in time to vote, let alone they are late to register, is still less people than the Russians created as bots that really did help turn the vote in several key states.

But you have to give the wingnuts the creativity to go with Alex Jones “false flags” that can be used both for and against Republicans/conservatives.
