Trump fired off on Twitter, declaring American companies “are hereby ordered to immediately start looking for an alternative to China.” He later clarified that he was threatening to make use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act in the trade war, raising questions about the wisdom and propriety of making the 1977 act used to target rogue regimes, terrorists and drug traffickers the newest weapon in the clash between the world’s largest economies.
It would mark the latest grasp of authority by Trump, who has claimed widespread powers not sought by his predecessors despite his own past criticism of their use of executive powers.
…
The act gives presidents wide berth in regulating international commerce during times of declared national emergencies. Trump threatened to use those powers earlier this year to place tariffs on imports from Mexico in a bid to force the U.S. neighbor to do more to address illegal crossings at their shared border.
…
It was not immediately clear how Trump could use the act to force American businesses to move their manufacturing out of China and to the U.S, and Trump’s threat appeared premature — as he has not declared an emergency with respect to China.Even without the emergency threat, Trump’s retaliatory action Friday — further raising tariffs on Chinese exports to the U.S. — had already sparked widespread outrage from the business community.
“It’s impossible for businesses to plan for the future in this type of environment,” David French, senior vice president for government relations at the National Retail Federation, said in a statement.
The Consumer Technology Association called the escalating tariffs “the worst economic mistake since the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 — a decision that catapulted our country into the Great Depression.”

He never smiles. The closest thing to a “smile” is when he pulls that Stan Laurel face. The rest of the time he is scowling (his “manly man” face) or he’s doing that weird thing where he makes a perfect circle with his lips, like he’s a South Park character. (South Park thinks he is too crazy to be accurately portrayed on their show)

Keep your fingers crossed everyone.
Italy’s centre-left Democratic Party (PD) said talks Friday with the anti-establishment Five Star Movement on forming a workable coalition government had been “positive”.
The country’s president Sergio Mattarella on Thursday gave the parties four days to reach an accord following the collapse of Italy’s dysfunctional populist alliance this week. The Five Star Movement (M5S), which had been governing Italy with Matteo Salvini’s far-right League party, has indicated it may be open to an alliance with the left instead — previously almost unthinkable after years of vicious arguments.
Salvini pulled the plug on the coalition earlier this month and Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte resigned on Tuesday.
The discussions between PD and the Movement (M5S) had found “ample agreement on social and environmental issues”, negotiator Graziano Delrio from the Democratic Party said after two hours of talks.
This move would stymie Salivini’s push for a snap election. I hope they can do this - right now, Salvini and his quasi-Fascist Lega Party are riding high in the polls, so if PD and M5S can agree on a coalition government, it would leave Salvini out…..and presumably, fuming in impotent rage.

Russia’s GDP may only be about 8% of ours; but that doesn’t mean that, thanks to their assets in the WH and sprinkled throughout the GOP, that they are unable to topple us and drive us to irrelevance on the world stage. After all, David did slay Goliath.
Our nation is rotting from within — our long-time social divisions exacerbated by maniacal leadership and predatory oligarchs with goals of personal enrichment at the sacrifice of our environment. The government has officially abandoned all the laudatory goals that we espoused (though seldom practiced) throughout our history — and it is aided by tens of millions of our fellow citizens who continue to support this evil, with unrestrained enthusiasm.
I think I’m in a particularly bad mood because of a FB exchange — primarily between two other parties. One detests Trump but will be voting 3rd party because he cannot support the economic policies of the Democratic party — it’s unfettered capitalism that he endorses; the other pretends to dislike Trump’s personal behavior — but loves everything he is doing across the board and is looking forward to another 4 years. Both seem ok with the unfettered evil that has been unleashed — at least ok enough not to take actions to stop it.

At a certain point, Capital can no longer be regarded as equivalent to private property.
True Free Marketeers might freak out over that, but remember that is the basis behind the legislation that allows for limited liability corporations: they make a clear distinction between private assets and corporate capital and limit liability to the extent of corporate assets and not private ones, no matter whether this private property was earned from a limited-liability corporation.
And when a company is Too Big to Fail, then it is too big to be unregulated. When we remove moral risk from financial and business calculations, we are opening the door for all sorts of irresponsible damage to the economy.

re: #67 Hecuba’s daughter
It seemed to me that Trump sounded coherent in that video — he was making a consistent point that he wants to bring down China, and of course, his actions will also bring down the entire world economy, including our own. It wouldn’t be surprising if he were regurgitating Putin talking points. Putin can gain the power he wants only by destroying his competition.
Russia is a nation rich in natural resources and human intellect but through much of its history, especially the past 150 years, it has been cursed by dreadful government institutions, terrible economic policies, incompetent business organizations, and a totally corrupt social structure.
re: #95 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))
I grow wary of any attempt to frame Putin in Cold War terms, that was a worldwide rivalry between two competing social/economic systems.
Putin’s goals are to re-establish Russia as the leader of a revitalized Russian Empire, including most of the old USSR, but not to impose any ideology beyond that.
Still, the old Russian Empire included the Baltic states, parts of Poland, and Finland…
I would like to note that the usage of the Oxford comma there to distinguish between all of Finland and parts of it.
you don’t want the oxford comma there, if you are attempting to express “parts of Finland.” As written, the comma suggests he will annex parts of Poland, and the country Finland. What you want to say is “parts of both Poland and Finland.”
Don’t worry, I do this for the Washington Post as well through twitter and email, because apparently paying me decent five figures to copy-edit for their piss-poor journalists is too much of a burden for payroll.

Unless he is examined thoroughly by a reputable shrink, I am unwilling to accept any armchair diagnoses about his pathology or his dementia. I think it’s just as possible that he is a con man who is not having fun because in this role as “President”, he is expected to do real work, a task for which he is totally unsuited. He knows nothing of history, economics, or business — his skill is in entertaining and in separating the marks from their assets. His meandering rants happen because he is at a loss to respond to any questions that don’t directly apply to his limited repertoire, and as “President”, he is expected to comment on a whole range of subjects that do not interest him. He’s like a drowning man who pulls any rescuers down with him — we are all going down.

Even leaving aside the rather sneery food-shaming BS here, I can’t help but notice that this guy managing to create a “Chinese” “for four” has had to rely on “clearance” prices for some of that “bargain” (and assuming the attached pic is of the resultant meal, one-fourth does not seem like all much). Yeah, creating a meal for four for £4 (about $5) is nice and all: but it just doesn’t seem all that sustainable as a regular thing.
Of course, the basic point - that buying ingredients and cooking them yourself is, overall, cheaper than alternatives - is valid: it’s just harder to get across when larding with so much classist snobbery. And if this clown wants to sneer at “food poverty”, he should wait till post-Brexit policies (as they are expected to do) cause extensive increases in food prices. Though comments like these rarely come from people worried about the provenance of their next meal…..

Ok, I wouldn’t have known what cabotage was when Johnson mentioned it, but then he gave an example and I know what *that* is about. I just didn’t know it had a special name.
Oh. and good luck, Boris, that’s not happening. Trump would see it as a threat.
re: #206 Decatur Deb
Trump is the pure distillate of a “normal” Republican. He does what they yearn to do.
I saw a brief interview of Bill Weld, who is often thought of as a rational Republican politician. He got into the topic of the Second Amendment as an important bulwark against a tyrannical government, which basically translates to random individuals shooting law enforcement if they feel oppressed. Neither he nor the interviewer appeared to have any second thoughts about what he was saying.

Well, I learned at least one new word today (“cabotage” - the practice of, and rules regarding air/sea transport between points in the same country): however:
1. I note we had to learn this from Boris Johnson.
2. I see BoJo was talking about specific policy while Trump was blithering away airy generalities and grandiose - and quite unspecified - promises.
3. Trump (as usual) comes across as utterly unfamiliar with whatever he’s talking about.
4. It is an extremely depressing thought that in a head-to-head comparison, Boris Fucking Johnson comes across as the Competent Statesman compared to the POTUS….

Didn’t he support gun control as MA’s governor? Honestly I’m tired of the 2A against a tyrannical government bs argument. The 2A isn’t doing that.
re: #208 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel
It’s already obvious to me but we shouldn’t under-estimate the ability of the Trumpster media and their both-siderist collaborators to obfuscate, lie, and (their specialty) blame the Democrats. Most of the Trumpster base would still vote for him even if they’re living on Chinese-provided emergency rations by then. Personally, I would prefer that Mexico draws the aid mandate for this area, with long convoys of taco trucks, supplemented by air drops. If I see one of their C-130s fly over on a food drop I can yell “Hey, I built that!.”
I could live on poutine, I guess.

He is begging for a thank you from Sean Connery.
It’s pathetic.
He credited Sean Connery with helping him get approval for his Turnberry golf course. Don’t know how true that is, but it may just be trying to stay in the good graces of business contacts.

I’ve heard the word before, but it’s not a very common word; only time I’ve ever heard it was here in Europe.
Heh - I’ll bet Trump (at first) thought Boris was saying “cabbage”.
“Yeah, I don’t mind cabbage, but it gives me gas.”

Look at all the people (not including Mnuchin) who are rolling their eyes during this gibberish.

The real reason is about Puerto Rico. (this is also one of the reasons PR pays twice as much as the rest of us for almost everything.) Also, Hawaii.

Yeah, well…maybe….no.
ISTM Boris- and many other Brexiteers - are putting a lot of faith in the US (I.e. the Trump Administration) giving them some sort of sweetheart trade deal to help mitigate the negative fallout from a “crashout” Brexit.
Which, as lawyers would say, is seriously “assuming facts not in evidence”…..

That’s exactly what the Brexiteers are doing. And many of them also seem to be counting on Trump getting re-elected next year.
If a newly-elected Democratic POTUS says, “Sorry Britain - back of the line queue”….WTF are they going to do? They’ll be fucked six ways from Sunday.

And there was Wendell Wilkie, one of the most remarkable people in the history of American politics. He was an almost unknown corporate lawyer and CEO when he won the Republican Presidential nomination in 1940, completely out-manuevering the conservative/ isolationist wing of the party in the process. He proved to be an ardent anti-fascist, an internationalist and a champion of racial justice. After the election, he and Roosevelt reportedly discussed forming a new liberal party after the war. Neither man lived to see it. Wilkie died suddenly in October, 1944, aged 52, just a few months before Roosevelt himself.
