Colbert: According to Alan Dershowitz, Anything Trump Does Is Legal if It’s in Pursuit of His Reelection

Donald Trump’s impeachment defense attorney, Alan Dershowitz, took to the Senate lectern today with an argument reminiscent of Richard Nixon’s declaration, “when the president does it, that means that it is not illegal.” #Monologue #Impeachment #Comedy

Aqua Buddha submits a question he knew would either not get read or wouldn’t receive an answer, immediately runs outside to the press to make a big stink about it, and Roberts doesn’t blink an eye despite this being a clear violation of the rules.

They don’t even care about presenting this as anything but a farce anymore. They have the votes to block witnesses and then push for swift “acquittal,” all it is now is just grumbling their way through to the finish line.

So that’s why Trump has been campaigning non-stop since he was sworn in.

Trump believes that “Being President” is the prize that he entitled to by “winning” the election (even if he had to cheat but YOU CAN’T PROVE ANYTHING). He thinks his “job” is “campaigning to win the election” (EVEN IF IT IS “RIGGED”). He has no interest in actually doing the job of President because it’s not a “job” to him, it is a trophy.

“Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” ~Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Too bad that isn’t true. Does anyone here think that Hitler could have been driven from power by love? It matters who has the light and who shows the love. If the German people had been infused with love in the first place, Hitler would never have attained power.

Many in the GOP rant about 2nd amendment solutions. Of course, they think they will be the ones administering those solutions against liberals. But the question remains, once evil attains a foothold in a nation — how do you dislodge it? And it has attained a deep foothold now. The modern GOP poisons everything in this nation.

re: #396 Shiplord Kirel, Friend of Moose and Squirrel

I’m imagining how well Republicans will just accept a Democratic president doing all the things that they’ve declared presidents can do.

I assume that soon as there is a Democrat in the WH, most/all Congressional Republicans will do a 180-degree turn in attitude, suddenly rediscover their dedication to the rule of law, and “proper” constraints on Presidential powers, and deal with any criticism of this volte-face with the usual GOP answer: “Well, you criticized me for NOT taking this position then, why are you criticizing me for taking it now?”

I’m honestly of the belief that the only thing that is preventing Trump from announcing intent to pass a “Law to Remedy the Distress of People and Nation” as soon as the impeachment trial ends is the fact they haven’t yet figured out how to prevent about 50 Democratic House members from being able to vote.

He could order the military to arrest Democratic members of the House prior to the vote, provided, of course, he felt it was in the national interest.

well, I guess the part I simply don’t understand very well is this… okay, say you want to allow that extortion of an ally is somehow “legal” for whatever bullshit reason you choose to create…

on the other hand… ignoring Congressional subpoenas for both material witness and providing zero documents is indeed Criminal Obstruction of Justice and I have no idea how you can simply just wave your hand and say that it simply doesn’t matter.

Every other impeachment proceeding has had some level of the administration that was under the threat of impeachment or in the process of being impeached provided documentation, Johnson, Nixon, and Clinton. For these supposed public servants to turn a blind eye to THIS seems to be an invitation to untold levels of fuckery, why document anything, who cares, we’re not gonna let you see it. If those laws are tossed, I can see where people simply start taking “justice” into their own hands because if the lawmakers can start ignoring what laws are to be obeyed, people will draw the unfortunate conclusion of why bother.

There’s a reason that women are forming a shrinking percentage among GOP representation in Congress and the state and local levels.

As it stands right now, at the state level women comprise 29% of the 7,383 total positions, but disproportionately are Democrats by a more than 2:1 margin:

Democratic Party 1,453 - 19.6%
Republican Party 662 - 8.9%
Third Party 5
Nonpartisan (Nebraska) 14

It’s getting worse for the GOP. In 2018, the numbers were much closer: 1,148 Democrats and 705 Republican. In 2017, the numbers were similar - 1,116 Democrats and 707 Republicans. 2016 had 1,074 Democrats and 710 Republicans. The trend is bad for the GOP and getting worse, while women are asserting themselves within the Democratic party, including a breakout in 2019 (the 2018 midterms ushered in the 2019 class).

It’s a similar story in Congress. Check that - it’s so much worse:
For the 116th 2019-2021, there were 102 women. 13 are GOPers, which is 12.7% of the total and just 6.5% of the GOP representation in the House; 89 are Democrats and that makes up 37.9% of the Democratic party representation.

GOP are driving women out of the party. They’re making it clear that it’s the party of angry white guys who get to impose their bass-ackworld worldview on everyone else, consequences be damned. Women and minorities are hardest hit (because of course they are - white guys are snowflakes who have to feel better about themselves by harming everyone else to remind them of their rightful place below these guys).

The GOP if they weren’t the bastard children of Lee Atwater could have adapted to changing demos and offered a moderate conservative agenda but their base was triggered by imo a few factors- a) nonstop propaganda by people like Limbaugh and the FNC crowd, b) an intense hate of Obama, c) general changing trends in American politics- a reaction to social liberalism.

I honestly feel like there’s no way one person alone could shoulder that burden. I’m not sure Obama, skillful politician and orator as he is, could survive the current environment, with or without his past leadership and successes. The problem isn’t just Fox News, it’s that the vast majority of the non-Fox news apparatus seems to take cues from Fox and such, offering the GOP infinite credulity and Dems infinite contempt, and the only time Dems ever get positive coverage is when they’re shitkicking other Dems. And “new media” only has so much reach compared to “old media” and…well…look at Facebook’s increasing fealty to the Kochs and GOP operatives.

I realize I’m not going to convince you, but I’m going to say this anyway:

One of the failures of the Obama administration wasn’t done by Obama. It was far too many people thinking that Obama could do it all. That’s why 2010 turned into what it did. That’s why 2016 happened, even though Clinton won a large popular vote.

2018 was different. A whole lot of people ran for office in places that Democrats hadn’t in a long time. A whole lot of people, especially young people, turned out to vote, and Democrat picked up a lot of House seats and saved a bunch of Senate seats, and won at the local level in ways they hadn’t in a while.

2020 can be the same. Democrats are going to have someone run for every office here in Texas, the first in a long time. We will pick a nominee, and Democrats will vote. I think a lot of Republicans aren’t going to know what hit them.

It’s not going to be easy. And we will have a lot of struggles. But I think people finally understand it’s a fight and we all have to do it.

Or maybe that is just what repubs are hoping for, to take the pressure off them to have to vote for witnesses. Put it on Roberts. He doesn’t have to stand for elections and has a lifetime appointment, WTF does he have to worry about. And his legacy will not be hurt by voting for a fair trial.

Right and he wasn’t even appointed by Trump so he has no reason to be loyal to the Big Orange Monster.

Let’s be real. If Roberts is a deciding vote in favor of witnesses, there’s a good chance he’ll have to spend the rest of his life in hiding from redcap terrorists.

That’s also why it will be very interesting to see how he votes on the inevitable challenge to Roe v. Wade — GOP political machinations suggest keeping Roe alive (but continuing with Kennedy’s death of a thousand cuts), but he may not want to spend the rest of his life under mortal threat.

Even if it doesn’t ultimately change the outcome, I’d still rather have witnesses for several reasons:

1) Guarantees trial goes past SOTU and pisses off Trump
2) Guarantees we’re going to hear a lot of interesting shit that will ALSO piss off Trump
3) Gives the Democrats even more ammunition for election time
4) Forces GOP senators to have to pretzel themselves even harder to justify an acquittal vote.

And you wonder when you’re out in public, in line, or sitting next to somebody, are they the kind of person who thinks this is normal and okay and probably has Fuck you SNOWflake crap on their FB page? Honestly, this is what my neighbors have become. This is what casual acquaintances have become. This is what at least 50% of the people I happen to encounter are.

And they’re going to celebrate this like Christ’s Second Coming. You know when Trump gets pissed off and misspells 100+ tweets a day, these are his cheerleaders.

the strongest leverage we have right now is to vote
we an also participate in registration drives, postcards (what I do), and become active in the local D party.

Watch out that you don’t move the goal posts. The probability that Trump was going to be convicted by the Senate run by McConnell was pretty low (to tell you the truth, I doubt Nixon would have been forced to resign had Republicans been in charge of Congress back then). He’s been impeached, and people are seeing how willing the GOP is to throw away the constitution to maintain power.

I think Pelosi’s bigger plan, knowing Trump would suffer no consequences, was to mobilize voters. As sharp as she is, and she is, I don’t believe there’s a card up or amagic bullet her sleeve. I think that was her backup plan all along, hoping enough people would be outraged enough to vote for otherwise un-electable candidates.

Charlie Pierce: Joe Biden’s Big Advantage in Iowa Is the Old Shoe Factor People know the former vice president. They’re comfortable with him. They’ve seen him before.

If I really believed [Dershowitz’s crap yesterday], then I wouldn’t trust any of my fellow human beings with that kind of power, and that includes any of the Democratic candidates now traipsing through the gray and lonely Iowa winter. Instead, I’d be advocating to eliminate the office of president* entirely, since it clearly is an inherent danger to self-government.

It is a very strange, dead-level time in the campaign, especially considering we are deep in the homestretch of the first signifying votes that will be cast. Three of the most prominent candidates remaining—Bernie Sanders, Amy Klobuchar, and Senator Professor Warren—are stuck in Washington as jurors in the puppet-show trial of a renegade president*. Consequently, Biden has the state almost all to himself; Pete Buttigieg’s campaign is almost audibly losing air here.

… I spent a week in Washington watching the third-rate remoras of this presidency* rewrite the Constitution in order to keep him in power. And there are people who slept out overnight on the chilly sidewalks of Des Moines for a chance to hear the president* deal out the same virulent heresies in person. He is the chief executive of a country I don’t recognize anymore.

Michigan Football Coach Suspended Because He Wanted To Have Dinner, Drinks With Actual Hitler (Goes to Wonkette)

This guy had about the shortest job as a football coach. Three days after he was hired, the editor of the university’s student newspaper asked one of those very softball questions people get asked: “If you could have dinner with any historical figure, who would it be?”

His answer was Adolph Hitler. He then explained why. That did not go well.

Berger also included John F. Kennedy and Christopher Columbus at his historical figure dinner party. Poor JFK got stuck at a genocidal sausage fest. Couldn’t Berger at least invite Lucrezia Borgia and the Countess Elizabeth Bathory to round things out? Berger’s obviously never thrown a successful dinner party.

Wonkette takes apart his answer as printed in the student newspaper at the university. Stephen Robinson is righteously angry in the article.

Congress can’t subpoena witnesses during the impeachment trial that they didn’t interview during the inquiry.

Sen. Sasse here is already in a tough spot. He’s being primaried from the right (the only way you can do it) by a Trump-worshipping businessman who is attacking him for his so-called never Trump stance during the 2016 primaries.

The Democrats here are going after him for being a weathervane who is helping Trump destroy the two largest industries in this state, agriculture and tourism.

In the 2018 blue wave, Democrats swept a huge number of offices where the party hasn’t run in decades.

That fourteen women here is a record. There were two when the ERA was ratified here in the Seventies.

Moreover, non-partisan in Nebraska means party affiliation isn’t put on ballots. (The only place where it is, is federal candidates, which makes researching affiliations difficult for local offices).

Of those fourteen women, nearly all are affiliated with the Democratic Party, and one is affiliated with the Libertarian Party (she switched after Trump was elected from the Republicans).
