Period.

Rural western Fremont County in Wyoming leads the pack with ninety-eight cases, up fifteen since yesterday. The rest of the state was up four.

health.wyo.gov
All of Wyoming has 389 cases.

The most populous county (Laramie, state capital and county seat Cheyenne) has eighty-nine cases, but at least Cheyenne has more than a rural hospital barely on par with a clinic.

The outbreak there came from all the wealthy people from Colorado flooding into the ski areas there to go skiing or avoid the outbreak in Colorado. (Coloradans were also the source of the cases in the Nebraska Panhandle.)

(Includes map with cases by county, Cheyenne Wyoming Tribune-Eagle)

Dr. Birx is going to leave a horrible legacy. It’s one thing to be a cynical paid fixer. It’s worse, in my eyes, to be the expert who props up the mad king. I get that it’s an emergency & I understand the theoretical strategy she may think she’s pursuing, but it’s a moral horror.

If Dr Brix does stand up to Trump, she will just get fired and most likely be replaced with someone even more incompetent and more horrible…

“Jeff Weaver, who served as Mr. Sanders’s campaign manager in 2016 and as a top adviser in 2020, and Mark Longabaugh, who worked for Mr. Sanders in 2016 but left the 2020 campaign early on, are the leading figures behind the effort.”

Czech Parliament just voted to extend the state of emergency until 17 May - the minority government of PM Babiš wanted to extend it to the end of May, but Parliament refused; they voted instead to end the current SoE at midnight, 17 May….and barring some massive upsurge in infections between now and then, it’s very unlikely the government could count on parliamentary support to renew it once it expires. As I’ve said before, no one trusts Babiš.

Masks serve two purposes - signaling that I care about your health so I’m going to minimize your exposures. It also signals that I’m protecting myself from your exhalations or other fluids that might be exhaled/transmitted.

Pence, like Trump and the rest of Trumpworld, don’t care about any of this - they’re value signaling to their base that it’s okay not to wear masks for these interactions.

Meanwhile Trump can’t count on an endorsement from any living former Republican nominee. Biden meanwhile will have or has already gotten Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, Bill Clinton, Gore, Kerry, Obama, & Hillary Clinton. This election is a referendum on Trump and he’s failed. I bet Biden is tempted to use the Reagan line on Trump in front of millions of Americans and I would be too and I hate Reagsn.

Given that she has abandoned her credibility for her past stellar work in the public health sector to instead embrace her ties to the evangelical Christian community and their allegiance to Trump, she has forfeited any right to respect. The first mask I got was constantly pulling on my ears so I switched to a different design that seems to be working a bit better.

I agree. If a Democrat is elected in 2020 and if Democrats take over the Senate, we will have time to get an appropriate balance. Right now Alito, Thomas, and Gorsuch seem irredeemable, with Alito clearly being the worst of the group. New Hampshire’s hot spots are on the I-93 and I-95 corridors connected to Massachusetts. Lots of tax refugees who live in NH but work in MA, though the first cases in that area were traced to people who had recently been to Europe and didn’t have anything to do with travel along the highways, so hard to say. It’s probably worst in Manchester among immigrant neighborhoods where people all live in run-down apartment complexes (and also nursing homes). An exception is on the west side of the state in Hanover where a medical worker returned from overseas and spread it when attending a large event.

Living in NH and working in MA is not a good way to avoid taxes. You get stuck with NH’s high property tax and MA income tax and you probably end up splitting on sales tax as you probably spend a fair amount of money in MA if you work there all day.

So, the feds have PPEs for private businesses but none for the federal employees of the IRS. Got it. The federal reserve of PPEs is there to be used as needed for re-election purposes. Trump literally needs (red) meat to keep his base happy.

To be fair, I’m not opposed to the government providing businesses and individuals with PPE, but Trumpco sure is selective about who gets the swag.

They’re going to kill us all. And it won’t matter that the majority of the country, and blue state govs, are putting in the measures to combat it, not when the assholes from the states about to ‘Reopen’ will have already unflattened the curve for everyone.

Yeah. Remembered her, but badly.

It was a racist hoax.

In October 2008, Ashley Todd, a volunteer for the U.S. presidential campaign of Republican John McCain, falsely claimed to have been the victim of robbery and politically motivated physical assault by a supporter of McCain’s Democratic opponent Barack Obama. The story broke less than two weeks before the 2008 United States presidential election on November 4. Todd later confessed to inventing the story after surveillance photos and a polygraph test were presented. She was charged with filing a false police report, and entered a probation program for first-time offenders.

As for FOX, the Washington Examiner, and other sites claiming the reporter apologised to Mr. Trump on Twitter, that is not true.

The per capita testing tells only part of the story.

If you were testing 12,000 per 100k within the first week, you had a really good chance of stopping the spread with minimal loss of life. If it took you six weeks to get to that point, the pandemic has spread out of control and you’d need to conduct even more tests per capita to get to a rate where you’re able to do contact tracing.

Trump’s delay caused the high death toll, and now crowing about the per capita testing isn’t a success when quick action is what would have prevented this disaster in the first place.

It’s his failures all through Jan-March that led us to this catastrophic death toll and economic collapse. That’s all on him. All of it. Not China. Not WHO. Not anyone but him and his sycophantic advisers who ignored the data, the warnings, and instead went to their brokers to cash in.

Living in NH and working in MA is not a good way to avoid taxes. You get stuck with NH’s high property tax and MA income tax and you probably end up splitting on sales tax as you probably spend a fair amount of money in MA if you work there all day.

plus the cost of gas/parking and time spent on the commute

The Uber driver evicted from home and left to die of coronavirus (BBC)

His landlord locked him out of his home by changing his locks, which is an illegal eviction in the UK.

He had to stop driving for Uber when he tested positive for the virus.

After his landlord evicted him, he had no place to sleep but his car for five days, after which he was admitted to the hospital, where he died.

VA dismisses concerns about Oregon facility’s coronavirus dance party, cases rise to over 7,000 (Military Times)

The seven thousand refers to the whole VA system, not the Oregon hospital.

Veterans Affairs officials dismissed concerns about a recent coronavirus dance party among leadership at an Oregon medical center even as the number of cases among patients and staff in the health care system continues to climb.

The event, made public by local Oregon media over the weekend, included at least 16 staff and raised concerns among some employees at the Roseburg VA Health Care System that local leaders were not taking social distancing recommendations seriously.

“I understand this is a rural county and it’s not spreading fast, but this is how it spreads,” one VA employee told the Oregonian.

USS Roosevelt has nearly 1,000 virus cases after Navy reassesses how it determines who’s still sick (Stars & Stripes)

The Navy has the most cases of any of the Armed Forces.

WASHINGTON — Nearly 1,000 sailors assigned to the USS Theodore Roosevelt are still fighting the coronavirus after the Navy reassessed how it determines whether someone has recovered from the virus.

Medical staff were finding that asymptomatic sailors placed in quarantine for 14 days were testing positive for the coronavirus when leaving isolation, according to Cmdr. Clayton Doss, a Navy spokesman.

Positive tests for the virus continued to happen with Roosevelt sailors who initially tested negative, so Navy officials determined the service needed to reevaluate its criteria and testing procedures, Doss said. The initial negative test can happen when the amount of virus in the body is not high enough for the test to detect it at the time, he said.

You know how Trump likes to brag he stopped flights from China? Does he not realize that sites like Flightradar24 exist? I mean, right now - literally right now - I’m looking at Hainan Airlines HU451, a nonstop flight from Wuhan, China to LAX (scheduled to arrive in less than three and a half hours, btw). It’s a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.

Yeesh. And I’d bet if you asked him about it, he’d say, “That’s not true, there’s no flights, I stopped them, believe me” or some such BS.

NY Times on the “stopped flights lie”

Since Chinese officials disclosed the outbreak of a mysterious pneumonialike illness to international health officials on New Year’s Eve, at least 430,000 people have arrived in the United States on direct flights from China, including nearly 40,000 in the two months after President Trump imposed restrictions on such travel, according to an analysis of data collected in both countries.

The school board voted 5-2 on Wednesday to yank those works out of teachers’ hands starting this fall. The removed books contained content that could potentially harm students, school board vice president Jim Hart told NBC News on Tuesday.

Several books that were not removed from classrooms still came under harsh scrutiny. “The Jungle” and “A Christmas Carol” could be interpreted as advocating for socialism, while “A Street in Bronzeville” was called to question for showing too much “realism” in describing racism against African Americans, according to a district memo.

The right wing and libertarians like the Kochs have long recognised that running nutbars for school districts is crucial for creating an uneducated populace.

On top of that, it’s impossible to be elected to a school board if you are either single or an atheist.

Democrats started getting on top of this problem. School board elections have been getting more expensive as outside libertarian groups pour money into “school reform” candidates.

Denver’s election was the most expensive in the city’s history, but the result was three union-backed candidates won their races, flipping the Denver School Board to Democratic control.

co.chalkbeat.org

In less watched races, in 2018 my school district flipped the school board to Democratic control (though no outside money went to the Leyton Public School race).

Since this is a boring newsday: Foodie Report

I’ve tried to do some basic ‘soak and eat’ pickling, not the real long term kind. First pass, not bad. Didn’t have the stuff I wanted (mustard seeds) but improvised with powerdered mustard, paprika, black peppercorn, real dill. Some garlic cloves. Mostly zucchini, 1/3rd japanese eggplant. Two jars not hot, two jars with some habanero.

Didn’t have sugar, but used some honey. Used 3 tbs of rock salt, but I think next time I’ll use two. A little salty.

Vinegar is 5% acidic apple cider. I could try 4% next time, or do a 25% vinegar to water ratio from 33%. I like it but the Wife Unit made some funny faces first pass.

Since I murdered most of two jars already, I might just heat up the liquid with a little fresh water, replace the dill with more fresh dill and garlic, and fill back up with more zuch and eggplant.

I don’t buy Smithfield products anyway: I buy locally from the two butcher shops here. Seems to me a boycott of Smithfield is in order.

LINCOLN — Gov. Pete Ricketts said Tuesday that he didn’t ask the Smithfield Foods plant in Crete to close because of an outbreak of coronavirus, nor did he ask it to stay open, as the plant decided Tuesday.

But Ricketts, during his daily briefing about the state’s response to the virus, said one thing’s for sure: He’d never ask that food processing plants shut down. They’re too important for food security and to keep the nation’s food chain running, he said.

A former top South Carolina business executive and supporter of U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham has decided to back the Republican incumbent’s Democratic challenger in his 2020 re-election race.

Richard Wilkerson, the former chairman and president of Michelin’s Greenville-based North America operations, said he chose to endorse Democrat Jaime Harrison because of his experience working with him while Harrison lobbied on the company’s behalf in Washington, D.C.

From 2009 to 2016, when Harrison was a lobbyist at the now-defunct Podesta Group, he advocated for some of Michelin’s legislative priorities, including dredging the Port of Charleston and creating new tire manufacturing standards to improve fuel efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Wilkerson said the experience showed him “how hard he (Harrison) works to bring lasting economic opportunity to the people of South Carolina” and described him as “the change South Carolina needs.”

Michelin is one of South Carolina’s largest companies, employing almost 10,000 people in the state.

It wasn’t a mandoline, it was a plain old Y-shaped potato peeler. I was trying to peel a butternut squash. Peeler slipped and took off the tip of my thumb. The ER put the lid back on & applied a pressure bandage.

I have never peeled a butternut since. I just cut them in half & bake until soft.

Wearing masks: some good, some bad

Bad: our hearing impaired folk will have a hard time communicating with us and we’ll need to work on that.

Good: you can mouth ‘fuck you, you fucking fuck’ at people who deserve it right when you’re staring them in the eye.

The issue I’m having with masks is that I also wear glasses and behind-the-ear hearing aids. It’s a guarantee that when I take off the mask it’s going to catch the hearing aids so I have to make sure I’m somewhere where I can catch them as they tumble. Now I just take them off and leave them in the car before I put the mask on for shopping.

I so despise the “[president’s name] Derangement Syndrome” bullshit. Like, sure, there will always be people who rationally or irrationally dislike a president, but that doesn’t mean any and all criticism of them is terrible.

One of the things people note about creationists is they never publish a scientific paper supporting their claims about Biblical truths.

No more. Creationists have published an actual paper. Professor Stick promptly tears it apart.

Like all counter-apologetics videos, it is demonitised. YouTube does not allow advertising on videos pushing back against religious claims.

I like to lurk twitter, but changes made a few weeks ago make it maddening. They give you three people you might like to follow now and they basically loop back to each other, so I quickly end up in an MSNBC rabbit hole. It used to quickly lead me to new and interesting people. I guess genius if the intent is to make me sign up to so that I follow or see more options. And even if I purposely put in someone outside of a kind of political person I might usually follow, it’s amazing how quickly it leads me back to the same kind of people. Not really a rant, because I know I’m a parasite on their service, but frustrating nonetheless because there are probably lots of people like me who are finding themselves in increasingly smaller echo chambers.

Man, Trump is a shit show, but it kills me people have such a low opinion of the US. We have 24 potential vaccines in development in the US, 2 of them already in phase 1 trials. We still have many of the best research institutions and minds in the world and while that doesn’t guarantee we will be the first to a vaccine I also wouldn’t bet against it.

They got their publicity shot; as a for-profit healthcare organisation that’s all they care about. People aren’t going to stop going to Mayo Clinic over this, and Pence gets their bratty tantrum over following rules to keep society safe.
