I’m always curious how the first part is supposed to work if they don’t control the Senate.
It’s not the lies that are frustrating, nobody really went into this expecting that Barr would do anything but lie.
It’s that this whole mess feels like something that’s being conducted to check off a box on a list. After months of trying to get this slippery fucker to sit still long enough to be questioned, more time has been spent on giving speeches than in asking direct questions with follow-up questions intended to get to the truth.

Cut the funding off in the House and if the Senate insists simply lay the marker on the table that there will be no funding of the office when the appropriation runs out.

Yeah, cutting funding for the DOJ would go over real well. Without buy in from the senate it would require being willing to shut down the entire government, because they aren’t going to pass any bill that excludes funding for the DOJ.

I don’t see how sports can work right now without some sort of bubble program. That’s what has allowed the MLS, NBA, WNBA, and soon the NHL work. Baseball and football have too many people involved to work outside of a bubble system (hell, they may have too many to work inside a bubble system).

More importantly, how is the Trump administration going to try to change the election date? There isn’t one election. You really think State Secretaries of State are going to try and cancel the election at the president’s order? What happens when 30 blue states tell Trump to fuck off and hold elections, certify their results, have electors cast ballots and send them to DC? Do you think red states will go along with that? Is Pence just not going to tally them as he’s required to by the constitution?
I get that they are a bunch of fucking morons in this maladministration, but for fuck’s sake, has nobody there even thought to game out this scenario?

Per the 12th Amendment, the winner is whoever has a majority of appointed electors. So, if states don’t appoint electors, and there’s only 150 electors instead of 270, then a nominee only needs 76 electoral votes.

Jen calls out the media and the moron:
A ‘shift in tone’? Some reporters never learn.
Trump never changes because, as his niece and best-selling author Mary L.Trump has told one interviewer after another, he is incapable of self-reflection, admitting fault and growing as a person. The media’s fetish with “tone” seems to tell us more about the media than Trump. It is part of the mainstream media’s collective determination to avoid spelling out how irrational and impulsive he actually is. (If someone can change tone, he is capable of deliberate reflection and self-control, right?)
…the mainstream media engages in its own gaslighting by disingenuously presenting Trump as a rational president. If the media were to let go of the “tone” change routine, it might have to eschew phony balance (“Trump said ‘X.’ Everyone outside the cult said, ‘Not X’”) for a stark and inarguably accurate portrait of a president whose temperament, intellect and character make him entirely unfit for his office and a threat to the republic.

‘We Are Upholding The Rule Of Law,’ Bill Barr Tells Congress While Federal Agents Drag Jerry Nadler Into Unmarked Van
WASHINGTON—Assuring lawmakers that his department was operating strictly according to the book, Attorney General Bill Barr told Congress during a testimony Tuesday that he only intended to “uphold the rule of law” while federal agents dragged a screaming Jerry Nadler outside into an unmarked van. “This is standard agency practice that has been in place in administrations long before this one to quiet unrest like what we’re seeing in the Capitol building today,” said Barr after unidentified agents burst into the House Chamber, covered the California representative’s face with a black bag, zip-tied his hands, and led him to a white federal vehicle awaiting along with Reps. Hakeem Jeffries and Pramila Jayapal. “When you have hundreds of Congress members demonstrating inside the building daily, we need to do something to restore order. Frankly, the resistance like some of these legislators showed in being dragged from this testimony suggests that they do not have peaceful intentions.” At press time, Mitch McConnell had requested Barr provide immediate testimony to explain why he had not yet also sent in troops to restore order in the unruly Senate chambers.

To put 1 out of 9 into perspective. That’s 11%. 11% of a 33,000 person police force means that there’s: 3,666 officers who have had at least one excessive force complaint lodged against them.
We also know that some of those involved have had multiples - and can account for the bulk of all complaints, and yet they’re still on the force and will remain so until they’re able to retire with full pensions.

Back to the clusterfuck that is MLB:
MLB announced that Miami’s next six games, starting with Tuesday night’s home game against the Baltimore Orioles, have been postponed, citing the belief that “it is most prudent to allow the Marlins time to focus on providing care for their players and planning their Baseball Operations for a resumption early next week.”
It affects the schedule for at least 4 teams. MLB is walking a tightrope this season, 60 games in 66 days gives them little wiggle room for error or situations like this.

The best case scenario for an NFL bubble would be having a complex where they have 8-10 fields available for use along with lodging. 32 teams, 16 games per week, 6-8 at a time is how it usually runs on Sundays (Thursday and Monday nights excepted). But you would need a massive complex to accommodate all the people that would have to be there. And I just don’t see anything like that existing.

I needed to get out of the house today so I took a scooter ride past all seven houses (well, six plus one apartment) where I’ve lived. All but one are still there. The demolished one was my first ‘band’ house and we knew that house was going to be torn down before we move in. We were only there for 5 or 6 months but it was a GREAT house for five musicians with barely any money.
The three houses prior to the band house were all within about 3 miles of each other, as were the three places after the band house. The two groups and the band house form a triangle with 12 mile sides. The whole triangle is inside of Ramsey County, the smallest county in MN.
The whole round trip took 70 minutes, and the trip odometer showed 45.7 miles. If I would have skipped the demolished band house site, it would have been a lot quicker, but it was fun to drive up the winding suburban road from the freeway to the site.
I’m looking at moving this fall into a retiree townhouse in my neighborhood. That will add 3 miles and five minutes to the trip.
There have actually been some changes in my life (honest!), but every time things changed I’ve managed to find a replacement thing pretty close by. The Twin Cities have been pretty good that way.

If Kodak uses that money to mass produce the “paper test” (seems like a product that fits into what they already do well, paper with chemicals attached) and get them out there, assuming the FDA will let them, then this might actually be a great thing.
The paper test was incorrectly poo-pooed early on much to our disservice*. The 50-ish% of the cases it can find, actually cover like 90% of the cases in the window of transmission from what I’ve been reading.
*I don’t believe it was known exactly how big the transmission window was back then and it was not expected that the Federal Government would completely fuck this up to the point we are at now.

The crazed MAGAt photographed choking a Hank Gilbert supporter at the rally Saturday has been identified as ERIC ALTIMIRE of Tyler.
GILBERT QUESTIONS WHY MAN WHO CHOKED PROTESTER HAS NOT BEEN ARRESTED
The guy’s daughter sounds like a real charmer as well. From your link:
“DA Putman also needs to call Miss Caroline Artimire before this grand jury, and determine if she violated Section 42.04 of the Texas Penal Code—which covers inciting a riot. It sure seems to me that her admitted actions, from unplugging the sound system to admitting to being the first person to physically touch another person in a violent way, constitute such conduct, but I’m not a lawyer,” Gilbert said.
From the Dallas Morning News:
“No he was not beaten, he got shoved and then tripped himself because he was trying to defend the stupid guy that called me a name,” she said in her post. “Don’t let the dems fool you. All these men stood up for me, a young woman because I was disrespected by a 50+ year old. … Yes violence occurred and it should have been handled another way but these men and MY DAD stood up for me and I see nothing wrong with it.”
Yeah, from watching the video and reading the reports, she doesn’t have much credibility. (But then, she’s a GOHMERT fan, so what can you expect)

Six weeks ago ago we moved my mother in law (89) out of a managed care facility after we received reports that a staff member had tested positive for covid-19. She’s staying in touch with the friends she met there, so we get news. Everyone is staying isolated in their (small) rooms for the most part. Her friends there are envious that she is free to walk around outdoors. One resident has died from a covid-related heart attack. There are five new cases among the residents, and three recovered cases among the staff. The virus continues to spread.

Twitter limits Arizona GOP Chair Kelli Ward’s account for spreading COVID-19 misinformation*snip*
The decision by Twitter came after she shared the viral video of a group of physicians making false and misleading comments about the pandemic. Twitter’s decision to limit Ward’s account came after the social media giant also punished Donald Trump Jr. for posting the same video.
Ward is the woman who wanted John McCain to resign and Doug Ducey to appoint her, Kelli Ward, to his seat in the senate. Ward is also a physician, but she’s on the wrong side of pretty much everything.

re: #281 Dread Pirate
If California loses seats, it is most likely going to lose GOP seats. And in the states gaining seats, it is more likely those seats will be competitive.
More importantly, we need to raise the number of seats in the House. I like the idea that someone here had about setting the number for a seat at whatever the least populous state is and then having seats based on that number. Based on the 2010 numbers we’d have somewhere around 550 members of the House (probably slightly more). Wyoming would set the bar at 563,636; California would have 66 seats, Texas 45.

No, Trump isn’t against masks because it makes people realize how much he fucked up. Trump was against masks before people realized how badly he fucked up by not mandating them months ago when we had a chance to contain this.
Trump was against masks even after the CDC suggested mandating them.
Trump was against them even when other countries flattened their curves and were able to reopen safely.
Trump remains against them even today as we cross 150,000+ deaths from covid19 nationwide. This is an abomination and it was entirely avoidable had Trump moved heaven and earth to test and contain the spread.
He has never cared about doing the heavy lifting to do anything - he looks for shortcuts and scams and quick cuts. He put idiot know nothings in charge of a response, and it shows.
That’s what we’re reminded of daily. That he still doesn’t require masking in his own admin shows how many dumbasses are really there: all of them save Fauci. They’re all sycophantic suckups. It shows, and that’s why we’ve got an out of control pandemic with no end in sight.

When I was in college, there was an anime that someone had that was neither dubbed nor subtitled, so we could not figure out what the name of it was. But we called it Sex, Demons, and Basketball. And having sex with demons was generally not good for the women.

Urotsuki Doji, if I remember. One of the videos in the series involved an unpopular teenage male who is offered a demon’s phallus, but he must cut off his member. Decisions…

The local video store didn’t really have much anime, but for some reason it had the first Urotsukidoji movie. Which basically boiled down to “Weird elf siblings look for legendary monster king, provoke two Tokyo teens into having sex, and the boy turns into skyscraper-sized-monster which fights using giant penis tentacles, and promptly ends the world.” I wasn’t quite scarred for life, but I stopped renting random anime I knew nothing about.
And we have a name:

No, Trump isn’t against masks because it makes people realize how much he fucked up. Trump was against masks before people realized how badly he fucked up by not mandating them months ago when we had a chance to contain this.
Trump was against masks even after the CDC suggested mandating them.
Trump was against them even when other countries flattened their curves and were able to reopen safely.
He’s against masks because it would smear his makeup.

Star Wars, where the women are the ones who show compassion. Where we see girls/women go from damsel in distress to kickass generals, and a young girl realizes that she’s got powers no one else ever had contemplated. Or where they understand that they have to be part of something bigger to save the galaxy from an unimaginable threat.
Heck, we see in every movie in the franchise how women move the story along as a protagonist (Leia, Padme, Rey, Jyn), or are integral to the story in some way (Solo’s gf), Admiral Hodo, etc. Even in the other tv series, female characters play important roles.
Shapiro’s letting his misogynistic freak flag fly.

Portland issues ‘maximum fine’ on feds for unpermitted fence outside courthouse; bill is $192,000 ‘and counting’
oregonlive.com
“…Portland Commissioner Chloe Eudaly said Tuesday the city is fining the federal government $500 every 15 minutes - the maximum charge allowed — until it removes an unpermitted fence blocking a bike lane on Southwest Third Avenue.”
Reported US Covid-19 deaths today were the highest since 27 May.
That is two months ago.
Some restrictions have been reintroduced in some states (like here in California - frustratingly I can’t get my hair cut again.)
Still, deaths will probably keep on truckin’, until there is a vaccine. We don’t know when that day is coming.
I do know this though: as it becomes more evident that Covid-19 has killed many more people than other communicable diseases this year, and that fact is driven home (hopefully) by election ads, Trump and his buddies will not find any peace from the bombardment about their failures.
This will drive Trump to be even more reckless… until his old-age leads to some physical decline issues.

Totally. Shes’ the one who was trying to save the galaxy. Luke stumbles into this not knowing the story. Han/Chewie were out for the money. Obi Wan was forced back into the game because Luke found the droids and took on the mentor role.
She’s the one who knew what she was doing every step of the way when she was caught. She had a plan and vision right up til she died.

Even in the non-canon fic, this is still true. There was never any doubt about Leia Organa Solo, from the beginning to the end.
re: #371 Love-Child of Cassandra and Sisyphus
So far, covid19 is climbing the charts in 2020. It’s now the 4th leading cause of death in the US behind the usual suspects:
From 2017:
Heart disease: 647,457
Cancer: 599,108
Covid19 (based on excess mortality: 180,000+
Accidents (unintentional injuries): 169,936
Chronic lower respiratory diseases: 160,201
Covid19: 150,000+
Stroke (cerebrovascular diseases): 146,383
Alzheimer’s disease: 121,404
Diabetes: 83,564
Influenza and pneumonia: 55,672
Nephritis, nephrotic syndrome, and nephrosis: 50,633
Intentional self-harm (suicide): 47,173
We’re 3x past the 2017 death toll from influenza. With excess mortality the only things worse are heart disease and cancer. Those are full year figures and covid19 has done that in just about 6 months.
re: #373 The Pie Overlord!
Padme and Leia weren’t tempted by the dark side.
Rey was.
Jyn thought about not doing anything for anyone, but then came around to helping for the greater good.

If you don’t mind my asking, what kind of work do you do?
(Wondering as a Googler)
I’m a tech manager for a too big to fail bank. Which is just a fancy name for cat herder. Basically, I manage availability issues and prod people towards solutions. I can (and have) done this from home since March. Some of my coworkers have always worked from home.
Last year the management went all in on this “everyone needs to be working in the office” thing “for the synergies.” Small sites were being shut down and people told to either move into a larger office or get packing At the same time, a new command center was built for my team and other teams, with emphasis on packing people in and subjecting us to constant bombardment by oversized television screens (and some monitoring screens). The execs absolutely turned on a dime the week of March 15. I mean, serious 180 degree. It’s now at the point where we’re getting OMG YOU MUST STAY HOME DON’T EVEN THINK ABOUT COMING IN WE WILL SIC HR ON YOU JUST DON’T DO IT warnings from our leaders.

As of right now, we’re out of the office until Sept. 8 at the earliest. I expect as we get into August, that day is going to be pushed out again. And again.
ETA: It wasn’t until I was out of the office that I realized what a coronavirus nightmare that place was. The seating is such that you can lean over and touch the next person. And there’s a huge HVAC system constantly recycling the air. It would have been a disaster had we stayed.

THIS is why all that “just the flu” was truly a deadly irresponsible idea to promote.
Really tough knowing what’s true these days—do I listen to the countries leading epidemiologists and virologists, or do I listen to the President’s YouTube quack who says Covid is caused by demon semen? Everyone’s got a different story, I guess I just don’t trust either side.

Oregon schools face tough climb to on-campus learning
Most of the state’s largest districts will stay with remote education until at least November
Gov. Kate Brown on Tuesday unveiled coronavirus testing-related metrics the state must meet before schools can reopen, and it became immediately evident that many of the state’s largest school districts will be online-only this fall.
Nice to see the Governor of Oregon at least has a plan and what the rules are.

According to an Agence France-Presse article, this is the background on the America’s Frontline Doctors group, which is the logo emblazoned on the white coats all these quacks are wearing.
The website for “America’s Frontline Doctors” was registered just 11 days ago, a web domain age checker revealed — and the site was taken down by Tuesday afternoon.
“Tea Party Patriots,” a right-wing political group backed by wealthy Republicans, said on its website it was responsible for organizing the Washington summit.

Funny! I work in Google Payments, so likely at the other end of the chain from where you are. Google was similar. Its corporate culture has never been conducive to working from home, but in early March the company turned on a dime (I’ve been using that same phrase). They’ve been incredibly supportive throughout. As you’ve likely read in the press, US Googlers have the option of working from home through the first half of 2021.
