Colbert: Jerry Falwell Jr.’s Link to Trump Is Far More Troubling Than His Sex Scandal

The current scandal surrounding Jerry Falwell Jr. would be a minor case of religious and sexual hypocrisy if it weren’t for the very serious allegation that Trump fixer Michael Cohen helped bury embarrassing photos of Falwell before the faith leader backed the President in the 2016 election. #Colbert #LateShowLIVE #JerryFalwellJr

But I recommend some of her videos (gun safety and the first aid kit videos) for people in general. It’s a small channel now with just a few videos so far.

OUTSIDE!

Ricks, a native of the Ninth Ward, later told NBC Nightly News that he wrote the bulletin based on his previous experiences with Betsy and Camille. He also said that he was looking for statements to take out, but decided to leave the bulletin more or less intact because it seemed valid for a storm that he was convinced would be “the big one” longtime New Orleans residents had been predicting for some time. He admitted that he and his colleagues hoped to have been wrong about just how powerful Katrina would become, “but our local expertise said otherwise.” He added, “We always prepare for the big one, we just didn’t think it was going to come this soon.”

The bulletin, and the rosary that Ricks clutched as he and his fellow forecasters weathered the storm in their office, are both now in the National Museum of American History.

“… that wall of water would move incredibly fast — 10 to 20 feet per second — wiping away almost everything in its path. Beams from the first row of houses to fall would become water-borne battering rams. Hurricane Ike, a Category 2 storm, pushed an 18-foot storm surge across Bolivar Peninsula, wiping most houses clean off their foundations.”
……..
“The “dirty side” of the storm — the most dangerous part, with the fastest moving wind and highest storm surge — would likely affect the Houston Ship Channel, which is lined with enormous chemical storage tanks.

Industry, says Bedient, is prepared for a Ship Channel surge of 15 feet. But for that smallish Category 4 storm, his models show a surge of 25 feet. And they show that it could affect thousands of chemical tanks.

Those tanks are made of steel. And in the same way that a car will float, a surge can lift a giant, part-empty tank — “they float like ships,” Bedient said — breaking its pipes and releasing whatever chemicals it contains. The tanks themselves would then become waterborne wrecking balls.”

Laura saw bombogenesis - in the earlier NHS release, it indicated that it intensified 27 mb over the past 12 hours. Threshold for bombogenesis is 24 mb over 24 hours.

So yeah, this is going to hit hard (and thankfully fast). Unlike Harvey, which stuck around for days, Laura is expected to quickly exit the region thanks to steering winds in upper atmosphere.

And he treated the White House worse than anyone has since the Royal Marines torched the joint in 1814. He turned it into his personal soundstage, and then handed it over to his wife, who delivered an overripe speech about nothing while dressed like Fidel Castro. Back before he became a threat to American democracy, the president* was notable for the baroquely bad taste with which he accessorized his various properties. In an act of pure chutzpah of a sort one thought the human mind incapable of, Pam Bondi, once the attorney general of Florida, gave a fantastical account of the Biden family’s corruption that came straight off the factory floor in the St. Petersburg that isn’t in Florida. This one had some extra tang to it because it was Bondi, during her time as Florida AG, who declined to pursue a state fraud case against Trump University, an action that coincided with a $25,000 contribution to her campaign from the Trump Foundation. Even the hypocrisy was in bad taste. Even the lies were tacky. The Golden Commode Era of American Decline is upon us.

It’s possible that his family had advanced knowledge of his plans — but it’s equally possible that they were blindsided by his actions. Jacob Blake was unarmed and was shot by cops 7 times.

Rittenhouse was heavily armed and wearing body armor and gloves to avoid leaving fingerprints. He opened fire on the crowd with an AR-15 and murdered 2 people. The cops did nothing to stop him, didn’t treat him as a danger, somehow enabled him to leave the scene of the crime, cross state lines, and he was ultimately arrested without a shot fired in Illinois. That’s after murdering 2 people with a high powered semi-auto rifle.

What exactly are we talking about here?

It’s what rather irks me about the pardon at the RNC last night: He was arrested for armed bank robbery and spent time in the Federal pen. If nothing else, this shows how vulnerable RW leaders are to kompromat. People who base their public lives on strident moralizing lose credibility, and therefore income, when their private lives fall short. Others are not nearly so vulnerable. If some non-moralizing fatcat had a similar affair exposed, people would just shrug and say “So what?” It wouldn’t happen then, because blackmail wouldn’t work.

This is where a wingnut leans in and whines that cops are now “afraid” of being charged if they put a hand on a black man. “Look at what happened to the cops who arrested George Floyd!”

Exactly. I don’t want to hear that he might have had a gun in the car. There were too many ways that situation could have ended up that didn’t result in Jacob Blake getting shot 7 times in the back from ~1 foot away.

Multiple cops could have tackled the guy at any point. But didn’t. They opted to shoot him in the back anyways.

There’s no justified use of force here. None.

This kid is 17 years old. Last I checked, you have to be 18 to own a long rifle (granted, it might vary by state).

Oh and he fled across state lines. That’s a paddlin’ few years in the slammer.

The long rifle may not have belonged to him. It could have been locked in a family safe — or it could have been provided to him by an older boogaloo. We will have to wait and see what develops from the investigation. Remember that initial reports of a crime or tragedy are seldom accurate and are always incomplete.

Nope. With good care, he can rot in a hole forgotten for fifty or sixty years. Nameless. Faceless.

These LARPing military wannabes should know that if convicted of something like this, they will be thrown in a hole and forgotten for half a century or more.

With the death penalty, they get a three-ring circus of attention for years with automatic appeals and press coverage.

People like Randy Weaver and Timothy McVeigh have been made into folk heroes by the anti-civilisation right wing because they were executed. The death penalty made them martyrs.

Random Observations on the RNC Orgy and Klan Rally (Night 1: That Was Some Weird Shit), The Rude Pundit

2. There wasn’t a word of sympathy for the 200,000 people in this country who have died of COVID-19, as if that never happened. In fact, in the telling of the RNC, some sneaky Chinaman defiled our virginal American shores and infected us with coronavirus, probably on purpose. And while all those evil Democrats ran around saying that it wasn’t a threat, one man knew right away what to do, and that man was Donald Trump, and Donald Trump allowed the United States to suckle from his orange breast, his milk filled with the medicine that would heal us. This wasn’t spin. We’re used to spin, where you take the facts and make them look good in a context of your choosing. No, this was a complete, Soviet-level revision of recent history, where Trump never said it would go away, never said there would only be 1 or 15 or 60,000 deaths, never claimed there were cures and treatments that didn’t exist, never accused governors desperately trying to get PPE and ventilators of just trying to make him look bad, never demeaned the scientists working on saving us, never politicized every fucking aspect of the pandemic. It has become an article of faith among the delusional MAGA hordes that Trump saved millions of lives by doing something, never allowing the corollaries, that the only way millions of people would have died is if he did absolutely nothing and prevented anyone else from doing anything and that, if he’d done more, we wouldn’t have this ridiculous, ongoing death rate, to enter their empty minds. It’s a madness that is so complete, so all-engulfing that they couldn’t even pause for a second to acknowledge the piles of dead bodies that their bullshit convention was stepping on.

That depends. For instance, was he wearing gloves when he loaded the magazine of his weapon? Because if he wasn’t, he left fingerprints on the shell casings. And I’d imagine ballistics analysis can trace it all back.

I dunno, I mean what more do you want them to do? They’re effectively forfeiting a playoff game. This is a huge thing that will stick on these players for the rest of their careers.

The NBA is less gonzo republican in ownership/management than the other sports leagues, but it’s very much a billionaires-only club. If they lose the series because of this, the owner probably has a case to sue his players for causing millions of dollars in damages.

Actively trying to piss off live viewers by walking out in the middle of the game just isn’t needed, this is a hell of a thing right here.

That depends. For instance, was he wearing gloves when he loaded the magazine of his weapon? Because if he wasn’t, he left fingerprints on the shell casings. And I’d imagine ballistics analysis can trace it all back.

It’s all about finding that one goober on the jury. The one who will nod along when you tell them that no fingerprints on the gun is enough to doubt his guilt.

Considering how folks have pointed out that he had gloves on, look for his attorney to insist that the lack of fingerprints on the murder weapon means they can’t prove he used it to commit murder.

Schrodinger’s “Mental Illness”: Bad enough that he can’t be held responsible for his actions, but not bad enough that he should be barred from possessing a firearm.

That way you can’t make laws barring the mentally ill from having guns, but you can use their “illness” as an excuse for why gun owners bear no responsibility for their actions.

control your weapon at all times.

- if it was his gun, he is responsible for not controlling his weapon at all times
- if it was not his gun, then he and the legal owner are both responsible for not controlling the weapon they owned and/or possessed, at all times

there is no third thing that is not an excuse to avoid responsibility

(Via USA Today) Cody Waymack and his wife are struggling to survive with their two children after the extra $600 a week in federal unemployment benefits expired in late July. Now the family is living off each of their weekly state unemployment checks: $96 and $48.

Cody, who lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was just four days into his new job as a pipe fitter at a chemical plant when he was laid off in March. His wife, who worked at a sandwich chain, initially had her hours slashed and eventually was laid off, too.

It came as a shock when the couple found out they don’t qualify for the new $300-a-week federal jobless aid through President Donald Trump’s executive action. He issued the memorandum this month after Congress failed to strike a deal on another coronavirus relief package.

“It was a heartbreaker,” says Waymack, 32, who has seen his apartment complex post eviction notices on his neighbors’ doors this month. He’s worried his family will be next because they can’t afford to pay their rent come Sept. 1.

Waymack is angry that Congress didn’t extend the $600 federal supplement before going on recess until Labor Day.

“Congress has failed us. I can’t even afford groceries,” says Waymack, who added that he doesn’t have enough in savings to fall back on, or a 401(k) plan to tap into for emergencies. “They don’t have to worry about where their next meal will come from or whether they’ll get evicted. They’re still getting paid while we’re begging for help.”

Americans hold Republicans and Democrats alike on Capitol Hill responsible for the lapse in jobless aid, according to a recent report from Morning Consult, a market research firm. Roughly 35% of voters blame Republicans for the expiration, the same share who blame Democrats, while another 27% hold Trump accountable.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Republicans are the problem well over 95% of the time, and this fact always gets lost in this both-sides bullshit.

This is why the GOP is fighting so hard. Lots of people want change, and they can’t be shamed into just playing along. Now, we’re not all able to do that like the sports people, but there is still more going on than they can control. This change is scaring the GOP.

Another way to read that is that 62% of people blame either Republicans in Congress or the Republican president. A 60-40 split on which party to blame is pretty good for the party in the 40%. Congressional Democrats need to get better at messaging. Because while we all know where the fuckery is happening, it seems a lot of people don’t - and quite frankly, every time a Democrat makes any appearance or gives any statement about this the first thing they say should be “the House passed an extension, Republicans in the Senate and Donald Trump aren’t interested in considering it, so the American people will suffer.”

Really pleased to see that the Brewers and the Reds are also refusing to play.
Don’t know about the rest of MLB, but kinda proud that my Reds are part of the start.

Arguments that stupid only come from people whose issues have destroyed their rationality.

In this case, racists are prepared to use absolutely anything to try to justify the shooting of a black person by a white man.

“If I can unseat him, that would be incredible”: Political Strategist Ashley Etienne may be Biden’s deadliest weapon against Trump. Vanity Fair

Etienne was the mind behind Democrats’ impeachment messaging, which won over half the country. Now “the queen of the war rooms” is in the Biden camp, and her sights are trained on the president.

I remember hearing the both-sides stuff in my canvassing days in 2018. The good news is, it took about two seconds to disabuse people of that with facts(e.g. the House bill has been sitting on Moscow Mitch’s desk since May).

The other good news is, the both-siders are likely to sit out the election, and in their numbers they cancel each other out.

Oh, and US News poll.
