There are enough people willing to risk it, which would be fine if they were the only ones who had to deal with any negative consequences…

That will kill Oculus, making a lot of people who are now accustomed to Facebook subsidizing their system very unhappy. No one wants to pay full price for an Oculus product after getting used to this subsidy, and without the Oculus services, the headsets are useless.

2) other tech giants have woken up to the idea. If FB tried to buy out an Instagram today there would be a bidding war and Google and Apple have deeper pockets

And I guarantee you that if you shut Facebook down, people will quickly settle on one new replacement, because the people on Facebook connect to people who connect to other people, … We might be introvters who don’t reall care to interact with many more people, but the rest of the world isn’t us.

And they use their market power to crowd out, buy out or just outright steal any up and coming tech they want and so far regulators have been nowhere to be seen.

One of the best things about an Oculus Quest 2 is the Move app that tracks your activity. It mimics the app an independent dev made for the Quest, and squeezes that developer out of the market. They absorb other people’s ideas, and then squeeze them out. The lucky ones get bought out, but everything will be absorbed.

Opinion: Five former IRS commissioners: Biden’s proposal would create a fairer tax system. Opinion by Lawrence B. Gibbs, Fred T. Goldberg, Margaret M. Richardson, Charles O. Rossotti and John Koskinen
washingtonpost.com

The Treasury career staff estimates that the administration’s tax compliance initiatives would raise $700 billion in revenue over a decade. Some believe the revenue potential is substantially larger — two of us have conservatively estimated the possibility of raising twice as much: $1.4 trillion through investments such as those Biden has proposed. The significant revenue at stake is a byproduct of the magnitude of the tax gap, which costs the country and honest taxpayers 3 percent of gross domestic product annually in taxes that are owed but unpaid. Uncollected taxes today equal the total taxes paid by the lower 90 percent of individual taxpayers. The scope of the tax compliance problem means that comprehensive proposals to address it would reap substantial benefits.

Editors are a hard thing to change. I honestly didn’t want to even look at VScode without an EMACS keymap loaded. Just too many years using it. With that in place, I can seriously consider it for windows. But EMACS is too important for me on things like *BSD and emulations of lisp machines and PDP (10/11/VAX) to completely abandon it.

Friend: what?

And the boiling point will be 212 degrees.

Friend: why?

Cause the freezing point and boiling points are opposite, so 180 degrees apart.

Friend: okay…. why not have the freezing point as zero?

Cause I used zero for a brine solution, not pure water.

Friend: so shouldn’t 212 degrees be the boiling point of brine then?

I’m Batman.

We were speculating on that when I was in college. We settled on two possible explanations of the upper temperature, either the temperature of the body, but badly measured, or the summer time high where Fahrenheit was located.

It’s not much better but I remember reading that Fahrenheit chose the saline temp as it was the coldest they regularly got there and 100 represented the hottest it ever got there. 32 and 212 just worked out that way as a result.

It’s a human temperature scale, precise in the range of temperatures we normally encounter in nature. C is better for science, but for people in general F is a good fit.

William, you just solved the climate crisis.
We’ll use that standard and just recalibrate all thermometers to that standard every year. Then temperature graphs won’t show any changes!

Brilliant!

I’m pretty sure my favorite “shut up / fuck you!” (“put a sock in it”) is not part of Twitter’s algorithm.

And NEWS…one of the sources with connections inside M*ark D*riscoll’s Circus of “Where’s Jesus?” sent the following to me this morning:

I’d already planned on going over there after work to protest the Wednesday “Real Men” meeting (because a neighbor said it was noisy on Wednesday evenings and gosh, a check says they’re having “Real Men”). Heh. Now I *really* have a reason to go out there.

Somebody struck a nerve. Oh that is just so wonderfully naughty.

Trumps tweet style is so unique. Unless he gets really good at masking it (which I doubt is within his capability), it’s going to be painfully obvious if he tries to sneak back on.

I was looking at in in a way, like, “This account is merely reporting what is posted on the social media site ‘The Desk of Donald J. Trump’, it is not Trump himself, please leave this account alone” and then it would basically just retweet whatever lame shit he’s posting on his own page. So basically, an end-run around the ban.
