Fox News has effectively admitted to misconduct that includes sexual harassment, discrimination, and retaliation against victimized employees, and has agreed to pay a million-dollar fine for “a pattern of violating the NYC Human Rights Law,” the Daily Beast reports.

Imagine if the Democrats’ seats in Congress truly reflected their share of votes cast by the electorate and was not distorted by gerrymandering and the disproportionally representative nature of the Senate.

agreed, there are a small batch of Senators that would not like to see it gone…. I think the best idea is to simply modify it to return to its original intent, allowing a passionate minority to debate and delay a vote to ensure that it “gets the attention” they feel it needs. The idea of passing along a note, like a get out of jail free card stating that because we intend to filibuster this bill but we can’t be bothered to show up because we have meetings with dark money donors is what needs to stop. Like all things McConnell touches, he uses the spirit of a piece of government protocol and turns it on itself, corrupting it past all recognition.

Hunter Brittain was 17 years old when he died. What we know definitively is that an Arkansas sheriff’s deputy shot and killed him at 3 a.m. last Wednesday. It’s almost a week later, and Brittain’s family still has no straight answers from the Lonoke County sheriff’s office.

There is a witness to Brittain’s shooting. Jordan King, 16, told local station KATV that he’d worked with Brittain most of the night to change the transmission on his truck so he could make it to his construction job at 6 a.m. They took the car to Mahoney’s Body Shop, which a family friend owns. Once they’d left the auto shop, Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Michael Davis pulled them over on Arkansas Highway 89.

King claims Brittain’s truck wouldn’t go into park, so Brittain left the vehicle and tried to grab a jug of antifreeze to put behind his truck’s tires so it wouldn’t hit the deputy’s car. This is when Davis allegedly fired his weapon without telling the 17-year-old Brittain to stop or get on the ground.

“They didn’t say one word that I know of. I didn’t hear it and it happened so fast,” King said.

Brittain’s truck was probably a piece of crap, but what he needed was a lift to work. Instead, he was shot down like a dog.

I had portable AC Units in my main room and they always died after 3 years. The last one died of course in April one week after the extended warranty expired. But there is a plus when you are in a rent controlled apartment in Los Angeles and you’re over 65. Rental agent must provide an air conditioner at no charge to you. So it’s nice to have a new Frigidare unit that cools a lot quicker than the old LG portable!

Ours is a GE and was only one year old last year. However, it seems that softball-size hail is not covered by the equipment warranty. It was included in our homeowner’s insurance claim though.

I’m surprised that as many hail claims as we’ve made over the last three years our insurance company hasn’t dumped us. (They actually reduced our premiums this year.)

We are scheduled for a new furnace and A/C unit next week to avoid that very scenario. We signed the contract in late April and this was the first they could get to it, and other than a “yes” to my Are we still on track for that date? question I haven’t heard anything from them, so I’m not betting the farm on it yet.

I just got 2 brand-new wall-mounted AC’s. Apparently so did a lot of other people in the building; I counted 2 dozen delivery boxes from this particular appliance store down in the lobby.

Building staff is installing them for us, yes I tipped them. And I love these new ACs.

The old ones I was replacing were from when the building was constructed, in the mid-1960’s. These new ones cool much faster, much quieter, and they have a remote control.

Domestic AC is all but unheard of in this part of Europe, I am lucky to live in an old farmhouse with 14” walls. They help keep the heat out for the first part of summer but will be heated through by the end of August.

At least it cools off nicely at night here in the countryside.

I think you need to have a sleeper compartment accommodation to get the special dinner service with its own menu. It was that way when I traveled (coach) on the Southwestern back in the end of May between Chicago and Albuquerque.

Coach had access to a cafe car and the food there was stuff the steward could heat quickly for you. Though I will say that the angus beef cheeseburger I got was not bad. The coffee on the Southwestern was also not as good as that on the Pennsylvanian between Philly and Pittsburgh. (Latter was Dunkin Donuts I think.)

re: #80 jeffreyw

Those are pretty! Not gonna lie though, I’ll never take the train when I could not take a plane, instead.

It’s a trade-off as I found out on my recent trip.

The plane trip from Albuquerque to Philly took about 1/4th the time, but the comfort level was hellish to me for the actual flight time, and I find waiting area seating in airports generally uncomfortable. Plus you get the additional standing about times boarding/unboarding planes, security lines, getting to the airport early, etc. etc.

The rail side had a few multi-hour layovers as well. Lounge in Chicago was an uncomfortable as one in any airport. Layover in Pittsburgh did not count since I met friends and went out and had a drink. Checking and reclaiming baggage for the train trip was much easier. I showed up for the train 20 minutes early and there was no security lines. (Amtrak does reserve the right to do searches and such though - so it could happen.) Train takes quite a bit longer, but you have more personal space (bigger seats, more storage space, and an ability to move about the train, sit in a separate lounge area or observation car (if they have one).

I’d say traveling solo the airplane is probably still the primary. Traveling as a small group I’d give the train greater consideration since it’s much easier to do social stuff on a train than on an airliner. (I have played cards [cribbage] with my brother across the aisle in an airliner much to a stewardess’ amusement.)

Thanks. There does seem to be some controversy over the claim. But they also cite this:

Another paper, also by Holmes, Ingham and other colleagues, was cited later (after the rebuttal was published), but this paper reviewed the growth of spring wheat in poor, sandy soil that had been inoculated with the SDF20 strain of K. planticola. Not anything resembling grounds for worldwide plant Armageddon.

Because poor sandy soil? I presume the writer has never visited the vast wheat fields in the Nebraska Sandhills (kind of the definition of poor sandy soil).

Last year someone wanted to go all XIX Century here in town for bread baking. They rented an empty lot and planted it in wheat and harvested it and threshed it by hand.

Unless you bring in an unnatural lawn company to lay down an unnatural turf carpet on your lot, your whole yard is poor sandy soil.

Imagine if the Democrats’ seats in Congress truly reflected their share of votes cast by the electorate and was not distorted by gerrymandering and the disproportionally representative nature of the Senate.

The vote in the House in 2020 was 51-48 in favor of the Dems. In a true proportional representation system, they’d have… basically the same majority they have now (53.4% of seats.

In the Senate, given the rotating nature of the seats, Republicans actually got more votes than Democrats 49.3-47. Even if you took the last three cycles and combined them and somehow made the Senate proportional too over those three elections, you’re looking at a 55-45 Dem majority.

So, things would look, more or less like they do now.

Grim forecast due to climate change. Large portions of the planet will become essentially uninhabitable.

Labor capacity losses related to heat stress are projected to double globally by 2050 with a warming climate.

Global warming of more than 6°C (11°F) eliminates all labor capacity in the hottest months in many areas, including the lower Mississippi Valley, and exposes most of the US east of the Rockies to heat stress beyond anything experienced in the world today.

In this scenario, heat stress in NYC exceeds present day Bahrain, and Bahrain heat stress would induce hyperthermia in even sleeping humans
.
Only by limiting global warming to less than 3°C (5°F) do we retain labor capacity in all areas in even the hottest months.

It is a hotbed of anti-vaxxers, Deep State horseshyte, stolen election bulkshyte, anti-CRT pro-slavery content, Islamophobic “kill all the Muslims” Christian brotherly love, white genocide Nazi propaganda, pretty much any fascist Republican position.

Rumble reportedly just _officially_ changed their terms of services to ban hate-speech and anti-Semitic content (amongst other things), though they’ve been saying they don’t like that content for a while. Gab is pissed off at Rumble (which I don’t recall hearing about before) because of that.

There is a pile of rice under there:
