C-SPAN is a literal example of a “house organ”.
Manchin and Sinema are easy to understand: They’re bought and paid for. The difference is that while the former is trying to BS people about how he’s so concerned about the debt and how we “can’t afford” all this money going to people who don’t wanna work as hard as he thinks they should, the latter is trying to just going with being “quirky” which is I guess the feminine equivalent of “maverick” that the press loved to use when McCain when was being a contrarian asshat.

Only the greatest gift to the world the United States has ever gave, forged in blood during the Civil War.
Sorry to be a broken record on this BUT —- based on my almost 3/4 century of life in America, the following is self evident if the bipartisan infrastructure bill fails.
1. The progressives will get the blame and the Biden presidency is effectively over. Don’t think that anyone who isn’t already progressive will nod and say it’s the moderates who are to blame and these people will then vote for more progressive candidates. Voters might blame moderates for failure of the larger package; but the progressives will get the blame for the failed bipartisan bill.
2. Telling the public we need more Democrats to get things done won’t wash. The public has repeatedly been told the Democrats control both Houses, even though that is not really true in the Senate. The public will look and see that the Democrats aren’t getting things done although so much was promised — and enough will stay home or decide to try the GOP again in 2022.
3. Manchin and Sinema must stay with the party; shaming them or threatening them isn’t a winning strategy (unless, in the unlikely event, you have material that can be used to actually blackmail them). If either is driven out or walks out in a huff, Biden’s presidency is done. As bad as they are, it would be infinitely worse if either jumps ship and McConnell takes control.
4. Democracy is finished if the GOP gets control of the House or Senate in 2022. The fact that Trump gained 11 million votes in 2020 over 2016 should make us realize how precarious our democracy is, especially given that the GOP is now a fully fascist organization at the federal level - as well as in many states that they control.

And then that will guarantee 1994 all over again. Only this time, 2024 won’t be a repeat of 1996 — it will be the end of our republic. If the Democrats had delivered on health care in 1994, Gingrich might not have succeeded in his Contract on America. But they didn’t — and we are still suffering from that Republican victory in taking over both Houses.
It bodes ill for our future that the entire GOP Senate supported McConnell’s attack on our economy by refusing to pass the Democrat’s clean bill on the debt limit. Not a single Republican demurred. The GOP smells blood — and they will work in unison to destroy this democracy. And failure to pass the smaller bipartisan bill will just feed into their narrative.

So the only option to GQP intransigence and the backstabbing of “moderate” Dems is to give both groups what they want, with the former killing the bulk of the Pres. Biden’s agenda and the latter getting a lot of spending to their states for projects they can campaign on for the next two elections?
Oh, cute story before bed.
My 16 year old son is kind of laid back, especially about his clothes. He’s a junior, and yet getting him to wear something other than gym shorts or sweat pants has been a challenge. Some of that is marching band. The pep rally uniform is a band shirt and black gym shorts, and they have to wear it all day, and band practice on other days is after school, so gym clothes are more comfortable in the Texas heat than other clothes.
Wednesdays are differenrt.Band doesn’t generally have after school practice on Wednesday (rules about the max number of hours they can do after school during the week). During his freshman year and the first couple of weeks of this year, that hasn’t really meant much to him. He just wore gym clothes.
But now there’s a girl.
They knew each other last year, but since we kept him home for most stuff (he went to school to practice after school marching but regular school was virtual) they didn’t get to spend a lot of time together. Now he sees her a lot more. And she’s starting to have an effect on him.
Today, he wore jeans, a white t-shirt, and an unbuttoned blue shirt. He almost tried wearing dress clothes the weekend before, but they really didn’t look right. All my pushing and it took one cute and rather confident girl.
A few weeks from now is the homecoming game Because the band has a competition that weekend, they won’t be able to make the dance, so some parents are planning a separate one. Whoever is setting it up made it Sadie Hawkins. My son’s friend immediately asked him to go with her. She told him he’d feel ok dancing with her after he sees her dance.

The GOP will campaign on how the Democrats couldn’t get any infrastructure done at all because the Democrats killed it. And that will work fine for the GQP and our democracy will die.
If the small bill got passed, the Democrats could campaign on how the GOP couldn’t get anything done while they were in office during Trump’s first 2 years — that they couldn’t even get an infrastructure bill, that it was a running joke that Trump the builder had nothing — and that it took a Democratic administration to get something to help our country. That would be a powerful message.

Josh Marshall’s view is that the corporate donors the holdouts seem so beholden to, the Chamber of Commerce types…. really want the BIF bill. If they’re convinced that the BBB is necessary to get to it, they’d relax their pressure, hoping the parts of BBB they don’t like (mostly taxes) will be rescinded next time the R’s are in charge.

Oh, and can we can the talk about Manchin and Sinema changing parties, because it ain’t going to happen. Even as much as they might be reviled by progressives, they’re still too “liberal” for the GQP to stomach and would almost certainly lose to primary challengers in 2024. And by staying in the Dem Party, they at least stand a chance of getting some of the things they want in any legislation passed before 2024, while it’s an almost certainty that Mitch would refuse to pass anything until then if only to thoroughly poison the well for whoever runs for the Dem nomination.

FDR and LBJ could never have passed their domestic agenda if their legislative margins were so razor thin. The lesson should be that you compromise to get something through to show that you can govern and then you do what is needed to expand your majority so that you can adopt a sweeping domestic agenda. If the progressives don’t understand this, they will never have another chance because our future will be Trump and fascism. I support the progressive proposals — but a majority of the House may not; we need to get what we can now and then fight for more.

In other words, we repeat 2009 by lamely telling the party voters that the “bipartisan” bill was the best we could hope to pass and it’s their fault for not electing more Democrats to Congress. Because it worked so well for us in 2010.
//////
By the way, that $3.5B price tag that Manchin and Sinema are balking at? That IS the compromise, compared to first $10B and then $6B that progressives proposed at the beginning of the year. And what we’re being told is $1.5B for construction projects in male-dominated industries are all we can hope to pass because it’s all the GQP will let us pass.

Top Republicans rub shoulders with extremists in secretive rightwing group, leak reveals
A leaked document has revealed the membership list of the secretive Council for National Policy (CNP), showing how it provides opportunities for elite Republicans, wealthy entrepreneurs, media proprietors and pillars of the US conservative movement to rub shoulders with anti-abortion and anti-Islamic extremists.
…
The Guardian repeatedly requested comment from CNP staff, including Executive Director Brad McEwen, and other groups mentioned in this story but received no immediate response.

Sounds almost Soviet. Creepy.
It isn’t. Basically, the prosecution and/or defence has to ask for a Section 7 investigation to determine whether the person was and/or is criminally insane, which may affect what kind of sentence (s)he gets. The harshest is “forensic psychiatric care with special release procedure”. It’s difficult to get declared criminally insane, it’s more likely that the a certifiable individual gets sentenced to prison than to forensic psychiatric care.
re: #119 Dangerman
Lewandowski, another pig, is out
(But for how long?)
At a charity event in Las Vegas this past weekend, he got the hots for Trashelle Odom, the wife of Republican donor John Odom. At a fancy dinner, he tried to hold her hand and she pushed him away. He touched her leg and she pulled her dress over it. He touched her back and she tried to get away. He touched her about 10 times and she rebuffed him every time. He also talked about the size of his genitalia, described his sexual performance, and showed her his room key. He also bragged that he controlled the fate of people in Trump’s orbit and can control who gets elected and who gets taken out. Even this didn’t impress Odom. When she left the room, Lewandowski followed her and said she had a “nice ass.” Finally he gave up and threw a drink at her. Four people who were there corroborated this report to Politico. Many others saw it.
After the dinner, there was a party for the attendees to the event. Witnesses reported seeing Odom in tears and pleading for help as Lewandowski stalked her, while other attendees tried to keep him from her. She told people that she feared for her safety because her hotel room was adjacent to his.
…
Mrs. Odom was not pleased and neither was Mr. Odom. In fact, Mr. Odom has said he wants the $100,000 he donated to Trump’s super PAC refunded unless Trump fires Lewandowski. And late Wednesday, that is exactly what happened.

re: #159 Eclectic Cyborg
THIS.
It should take more than one or two senators to completely torpedo legislation.
The problem is how to solve the issue without allowing a simple majority to just trample the rights of the minority. Parliamentary countries solve for this with their multiple-party system, enabling coalitions between otherwise minority groups to assemble a majority to enact legislation that protects minority rights. Americans have the Senate, but with the filibuster, it is set up to be completely controlled by the minority party at all times, except in certain specific circumstances. That is absolutely wrong, but I don’t know how to fix it beyond effectively abolishing the filibuster.
re: #159 Eclectic Cyborg
Technically it does - it takes those two plus the other 50 GOPers. For filibusters, it takes just 40.
But these two are blocking Biden’s agenda because “reasons”. Sinema wont even elaborate what they are, while Manchin keeps changing his reasons, which contradict his earlier support for doing these bills - mostly because he’s now concerned with cost when it’s a 10 year spending proposal that will greatly help WV, which lags in almost every economic indicator because WV residents still think that coal days are going to come back - they aren’t. Ever.

This is really the issue. The Founding Fathers designed our system on the assumption of good faith by participants in the system, perhaps assuming that the country would always retain its idealism and fervor for Enlightenment. Question is, how do we redo it to account for bad faith, and then how do we get it through with the bad faith participants we have now?

I think this is from the Times article that called it “Red Covid”:
“Covid deaths are also showing a partisan pattern,” the Times reported. “Covid is still a national crisis, but the worst forms of it are increasingly concentrated in red America.” Over the last seven days, an average of 70 people died every day in Tennessee. In Texas, an average of 300 a day died. Alabama averaged 116 COVID deaths a day. Florida averaged 335 deaths each day.
In blue states, the numbers were much, much lower: Maryland averaged 17 COVID deaths per day; New Jersey, 20; Connecticut, 8. Even blue states with large populations all averaged under 100 deaths a day, with New York at 41, Illinois at 38, and even California, the bluest and largest state of them all, with nearly 39 million residents, averaged only 93 deaths from COVID each day.

Some years ago, at one of my previous jobs, our company hired an executive who had previously worked in the C-suite of some fast food company. Fast food has nothing to do with what my company did. And of course, the new guy thought he knew how everything worked right from the get go because he’d “done this before.”
He immediately implemented a number of changes, some of which were damn near disastrous and after many complaints from us employees (and some not small financial hits to the company as a result of said changes) the company transferred him to another role and replaced him with someone who actually fucking understood what we did and how to make money doing it. Needless to say, morale improved after that.
