ââŠScott Smith was dragged to the ground by county deputies as tempers flared at the June 22 School Board meeting, egged on by protests against new state-mandated protections for transgender students.
According to testimony in the Aug. 17 District Court trial, Smith was arrested during an argument with a woman for whose daughter Smithâs wife had been a Girl Scout leader. Deputies dragged him to the ground, then outside, where he continued struggling and arguing with them, threatening to kick their teeth out. He was taken to the Adult Detention Center and charged with the two misdemeanors.â

It may be a white minority, but it is a very widespread and powerful minority â and they and their allies managed to get 74 million votes for TFG, have 50 votes in the Senate, and 212 members in the House. To cast those numbers as anything other than reflecting a polarized nation is to ignore reality. Manchin lives in a deep red state and his survival depends on being far more moderate than those who are fortunate to represent bastions of blue like New York, Illinois, or California. Biden won the Democratic nomination because he was perceived as moderate, and not a far left progressive like Bernie or Elizabeth (note: she was my favorite, but handicapped both by being a woman and deeply detested by the Bernie wing).
A very close friend, originally from Milwaukee, but now living near me, has expressed hostility against Jayapal and other progressives, not because she objects to their policies, but because she sees them as damaging Biden and the Democrats beyond repair due to their failure to pass the bipartisan infrastructure bill. That bill would be cast as a substantial Biden win. I have repeatedly told her to be patient and wait to see what happens but she is deeply afraid. She also is upset that more isnât being done to get voting rights legislation passed, but again, that may require getting this other legislation through first. And it does require a change to filibuster rules, unlike the Biden infrastructure bill that can pass under current Senate practices.

While pretending itâs about concerned parents, rather than angry stupid parents fried by Republican propaganda. Hawley did not show a picture of the fascists that show up at school board meetings. Unfortunately, we tend to see what happens if a Dem does show any emotion or outrage.. Itâs the âAngry Black Manâ syndrome, where the anger becomes the story and drowns out everything else, including how valid that anger actually is. The anger itself is treated as proof that the person and the issue theyâre emotional about is inherently unserious and thus invalid and worth nothing but mockery. Meanwhile, again, GOP gets away with it because itâs both expected of them, and treated as valid by default simply because itâs from a Republican.

Three things need saying. One, that âcritical race theoryâ is becoming the most destructive political boogeyman since Joseph McCarthy fear-mongered about Communists hiding behind every bush and tree.
Two, that this political boogeyman is being used by Republican state lawmakers to achieve what they have wanted â to use the power of the state to censor information and to police thought. We are close to updating the old Cold War pursuit of âun-American activities.â
Three, that by censoring information and policing thought, the Republicans can replace knowledge and understanding with lies and propaganda advancing a preferred way of seeing America, to wit: In America, everyone gets a fair shake in life. Ukraine Strikes Russian-Backed Forces Using Turkish-Made TB2 Drones For The First Time
Ukraineâs military has confirmed that it conducted its first ever strike using a Turkish-made Bayraktar TB2 armed drone yesterday. The TB2 destroyed a 122mm D-30 howitzer belonging to Russian-backed separatist forces in the countryâs eastern Donbass region that Ukrainian authorities said was responsible for killing one of its soldiers and wounding another. This is the latest conflict to see the use of Bayraktarâs flagship product, which has already been employed to great effect in recent years by Turkish forces in Syria, by Libyan government forces in that country, and by Azerbaijanâs military against Armenian troops in the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region. In each case, these unmanned aircraft were instrumental in holding back the opposing sideâs forces, if not outright defeating them.
Video reportedly showing the strike had emerged online ahead of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraineâs official confirmation. The General Staffâs post on Facebook about the incident included the same video clip, seen below, making clear that this was indeed footage of the TB2 destroying the D-30. Ukrainian officials had disclosed that TB2s were conducting reconnaissance flights in the Donbass region back in April.

In US politics, data has become king. And one of the most important data outfits on the Democratic sideâand, consequently, one of the more influential players in politics todayâis a for-profit company that few Democratic voters, grassroots activists, or cable news junkies have ever head of: TargetSmart. It provides crucial services to the Democratic National Committee, state Democratic parties, and a wide assortment of progressive outfits and makes millions of dollars a year. On its website, the firm has posted a significant declaration: It âhas always focused on the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates, and progressive organizationsâ and âdoes not work with Republican candidates.â But a Mother Jones investigation found that the owners and founders of TargetSmart also own a company that earns millions by helping to elect Republicans, including far-right GOP state legislators who have tried to overturn the 2020 election results, who were involved in the January 6 march on the US Capitol that turned into a seditious riot, and who have been part of the Republican crusade to skew election laws against the Democrats.

OT:
Last week I posted about a vaccine hesitant friend who was facing termination from his job as of 11/2/21 if he didnât get the shot. Heâs had this job for several years now and it pays well with pretty good benefits. So while I wasnât âbeat him over headâ about it, I did try to gently suggest it would probably be wiser to get the shot and keep his livelihood intact (as well as have more doors open for future opportunities) than to lose his job. Especially since he would have to compete for other jobs with other folks who refused to vaccinate and got canned.
Well, the story has a happy ending. Heâs getting his first shot tomorrow.

My wife just scheduled her booster for Friday evening. Sheâs a health care worker and so qualified. Anyway, she felt really blah for the next 24 hours after her Pfizer shots, so she wanted to have it on a Friday; sheâll get Moderna (the other three of us in the family experienced no adverse reactions). I felt like crap for about three days after the 2nd dose, but that is also better than getting COVID unprotected, and Iâll get a booster as soon as I can.
3 days getting baked and watching TV with low energy beats a hospital stay, and maybe feeling 20 years older coming out of the infection.

Cult indie band the Posies are splitting up after several women made allegations of sexual misconduct against frontman Ken Stringfellow. One woman accused the musician of forcing her into sex in a menâs toilet; another said she had been in an abusive relationship with him since 2017.
A third said Stringfellow bit her, leaving marks, and that she once woke up to find him having sex with her.
He categorically denied the claims, saying, âI am not down with violenceâ.

Stringfellowâs long-term bandmate Jon Auer told the station he had âleft the Posies very quicklyâ, after hearing one womanâs account of sexual abuse.âWhat she described to me was super disturbing, and it made my position immediately clear,â he said in an email.
âI confronted Ken about it on a phone call on Aug[ust] 4, 2021, and cancelled our upcoming shows, and flat-out told him that I wouldnât be working with him anymore.â
Drummer Frankie Siragusa, who had been a member of the Posies since 2015, left the band earlier this summer, and confirmed his departure was prompted by the allegations.

re: #178 Teddyâs Person
IIRC, I read about a study that suggested that vaccinated people didnât âthrow offâ as much virus as the unvaccinated (you can catch covid easier from an unvaccinated person than a vaccinated person). Does anyone else remember reading/hearing this tidbit?
The appropriate term is âshedâ. And that was the observed effect until delta; However, vaccinated people are shedding more of the virus with the delta variant, but still l less than unvaccinated people.
