The Nazi Furry is a fan of Kyle Rittenhouse.

An Oregon machinist with an ugly history of right-wing anger and harassment has been identified as the man who allegedly opened fire near a protest over the weekend in Portland, Oregon, leaving one woman dead and several others injured.

Portland police formally named Benjamin Jeffrey Smith as a suspect in the mass shooting, which killed 60-year-old June Knightly, a volunteer with a traffic crew for the protest, and critically injured at least two others. In news release Tuesday, police said Smith remained hospitalized in serious condition and that detectives were working with the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office to determine potential charges.

Smith’s roommate Kristine Christenson told The Oregonian that Smith had appeared on Reddit under the username “Polybun.” That account made anti-Semitic comments and praised Kyle Rittenhouse, the white teenager who fatally shot two men and wounded another during a racial justice protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 2020.

MIDVALE, Utah (KUTV) - A Utah father was taken into custody after police said he told his 4-year-old child to fire at officers following a dispute over an order at the McDonald’s drive-thru in Midvale.

The incident began Monday afternoon when a man took his two children to the McDonald’s location at 425 West and 7200 South, just off the east of the interchange with I-15.

Workers told investigators with the Unified Police Department of Greater Salt Lake that the man was upset that his order was incorrect. They said while at the pick-up window, he brandished a weapon and demanded his order be corrected.

Sheriff Rosie Rivera with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office said the workers asked the man to drive to a vehicle waiting area at the front of the restaurant while they corrected his order.

Instead, they called police and reported a man with a gun.

Rivera said officers arrived on the scene, knowing the man had a gun. They were able to approach and remove the man from the vehicle.

It was then that police said the man told his 4-year-old to shoot the gun. They saw a small hand and arm appear from inside the door.

An attentive officer was able to hit the gun as it was fired, directing the bullet upwards, where it struck an overhead awning. The child’s 3-year-old sibling was also in the backseat of the vehicle.

I used to work for a sizeable apiary in Northern California. We moved 2000 colonies into almond orchards every February to pollinate. Then we’d move those colonies to yards (about 120 colonies would fit on the back of a flatbed two-ton truck) throughout northern California and southern Oregon. Then we’d move them all to Montana in the summer for alfalfa and sweet clover honey harvest.

We could get 10-15lbs of honey production per colony per day when the conditions were right. Filled close to 700 55 gallon barrels with honey (600lbs of honey per barrel).

That wasn’t the fun part of the job. Fun part was grafting queens in the fall and winter and shipping them to beekeepers in northern states and Canada - about 3,000 queens a year at $6 a pop (1990s prices).

I wonder how well some of these operations would do working with something like mason bees rather than honeybees. I believe a lot of the pollination work in Europe is done by non-honeybees and I recall seeing a mix of both types at a site in France where they had a few hives of honeybees but also “houses” for the mason and leafcutter bees to use.

The arboretum at the university my brother teaches at has a “bee barn” which is a bunch of boxes each with a selection of reed stems for the bees to use. Different sizes since the bees come in multiple sizes.

It’s the process of transferring larva from the worker cell of the breeder’s hive to an artificial queen cell. The new queens are used to make new colonies.

It’s really neat when the queens are ready to hatch out because they make a chirping/peeping kind of sound.

re: #14 sagehen

Per the Google.

Beekeepers who wish to produce more than a handful of queens in a season typically do so by grafting. Grafting is the action of transferring a larva from a brood cell into a manufactured cell cup. This technique allows beekeepers to create any number of queen cells that are easy to handle and transport.Jun 4, 2020

I’m bemused by the reactions to Ukraine/Russia.

Putin and his guys have been speaking in intense ethno-national terms for more than a decade, heavily underlining that Slavs were a heroic manly people victimized and stripped of honor by effeminate Europeans that denied them the accolades for defeating the Mongols, Napoleon, and Hitler. Contrary to the vision of 4-D chess and everything-as-psyop, it seems to me like he’s been incredibly consistent in both how he acts and why he acts.

Like, it’s never been as cunning or sophisticated as anyone claims; it just works because basic bitch dictator stuff involves audacity and cruelty that other countries don’t have coping mechanisms for, particularly when they’re economically bound up with the dictatorship.

There’s an argument to be made… and I think one that has been mostly shown to be true in the post-Cold War order that by more thorough integration of the world economy, we reduce the risks of wars starting. Typically, democracies aren’t going to attack each other, and dictatorships have mostly recognized that foreign investment is good for business. Sometimes you get a Saddam Hussein or a Vladimir Putin who decides they want to build an empire, but they seem to be more outliers than the norm.

Admittedly, I’m also super fucking weirded out by the “Ukrainians are Nazis” types running around.

Sveboda and Pravi Sector have one seat in the parliament and that brands the whole nation. Putin’s governance philosophy is entirely palingenetic ultranationalism (fascism, academic definition); plus using ideology to cover stealing shit (fascism, socialist definition); plus treating all Eco’s comorbid symptoms of fascism like a checklist.

Like, the American left, right, and center seem to be culturally unified in their vision that the rest of the world has no agency and merit collective punishment.

It takes 30 days for them to be ready to hatch. Then we put them in mini colonies called ‘nukes’ and about 7 days later the virgins will fly and mate. Another week and they become laying queens. Then we catch them, put a white dot (with WhiteOut) on their back, and put them in a box with five or six workers to keep them warm and plug it with sugar paste.

Then they go in a mailbox to a beekeeper who needs them.

In an effort to keep Ethan Crumbley behind bars, prosecutors portrayed the school shooting suspect as a homicidal maniac who was fixated on achieving fame and glory by killing his classmates and took pride in his dark side.

He hasn’t “altered his way of thinking” since being jailed in the Nov. 30 mass shooting, prosecutors argued, alleging the teenager made some unusual requests while in lockup in December.

“He asked in jail, ‘How do i get my fan mail? How do i get my hate mail?’ He wants that notoriety,” Assistant Oakland Prosecutor Kelly Collins argued in court Tuesday, alleging the teenager also communicates with the outside world through a tablet, telling them things like: “My court date is Feb. 22. Yeah, my ride (Porsche Cayenne) has a 26-gallon tank (for something like a 550-mile range), and fillups can get pricy if it’s full tank, but In the ten years I’ve had it, I’ve seldom had to top up completely (OK, living in NYC, Cayenne doesn’t put on a hell of a lot of mileage).

This is why I’ve become hesitant to “brag” about red state deaths from COVID/effects on future elections after having thought about this more. Red states treat their minority populations like shit. It’s no surprise minorities are suffering the most.

By my math if gas was only $2.75 gallon it still would have cost him $118.25 to put 43 gallons in.

43 gallons is also nearly THREE TIMES the size of the gas tank in my SUV.

fuck, my mazda 3 holds 10 gallons, and I filled up two and a half weeks ago. Still got half a tank, and that’s after the 80 mile round trip to a Greenville gig.

I had an interesting experience where the nurse (a DPN, no less!) who looked like a kid because she’s under 35, and everybody under 35 looks like a kid to me now, had a nice conversation with me while we were waiting for the glue that was holding my finger on to dry. Took about 20-25 minutes for that to happen and for her to determine the tetanus shot they gave me wasn’t going to kill me, immediately. Finally, when we were done, and I was headed back down the hall to try to find the exit to reception, rather than the exit to the back parking lot and dumpster, she pulled her mask down to make a final comment to me, and I was thinking, “God damn, you’re absolutely lovely,” which I thought but did not say because I’m late middle-age, not elderly, so I’m not yet at the point where I say embarrassing shit out loud because I no longer know better.

Heavy rain right now, and I’m glad. The temps will stay well above freezing for the next 24 hours. The fluctuations over the last week have left any place that had snow covered in ice, and that has made walking the dog dangerous, not to mention driving on lesser traveled roads. We’re supposed to get as much as 9” Thursday through Friday night, and I’d hate to have that with an ice base underneath. Of course, fluctuations will continue so that snow is likely to melt then ice over and over. But a brief reprieve.

re: #70 The Ghost of a Flea

So instead of war, violence is outsourced to dictators who will keep the violence at a set level of intensity, and only against designated targets.

I mean, I can see why democracies would be down for a system in which a boot stomps a face forever but it’s never their face, but it’s not exactly “peace.”

I wouldn’t say that violence is necessarily outsourced. But I suspect that most democratic leaders would rather not spend what little political capital they have on human rights issues in foreign nations when they are dealing with their own domestic problems. I mean there’s a genocide currently taking place in Eithopia… and while the world should be doing something about it (and the ongoing Uighur genocide in China), I doubt any western democracy is going to get support from voters at home to engage in an military intervention to stop it.

It’s a fucked world system… probably slightly less fucked than it has been in the pass. Hopefully it gets a little less fucked each day. But decades of military misadventures have brought us here.

From the April 2, 2019 article:

Cadbury and Heinz have joined forces to launch a rather questionable new spread.

The chocolate maestros have teamed up with the food processing company to release a Cadbury Crème Egg-flavoured mayonnaise. Yes - really.

While this may seem like an April Fool’s joke, the new release is in fact very real and will be available for prospective fans to try this month.

And during current times then pray the USPS is operating with some degree of efficiency.

When Kandy Kaye divorced Stephen Horn in 2015, she got the foundation. Two years later, she assumed the title “baroness.” But there is no baron, no castle, and no noble bloodline. “I bought that title from the house of Marlborough, England,” she explained. “That’s Winston Churchill’s family.” She had read about the practice of purchasing baronies in the New York Times, and said hers cost 15,000 pounds sterling (at today’s rate, just more than $20,000). “I just thought it was quirky and might get me some upgrades on hotels, or a cruise ship,” she told me. (Pressed for details about acquiring the title, Horn said the purchase was made on the internet, and that she received a certificate from England attesting to her being the “baroness of Churchill,” but couldn’t vouch for its legitimacy.) She promptly changed the name of the Horn Family Foundation to the Baroness Kandy Kaye Horn Foundation.

They demonstrated it by attempting to overthrow the US Government on 1/6/2021 using a very real conspiracy of sitting Congress members, a SCOTUS wife, various cable news personalities and cranks, and a web of armed right wing American terrorists.

Everyone is pretending we still live in a democracy. We do not. We have a country where a Republican President has nearly unlimited power, and a Democratic President is kneecapped throughout his and it has been this way for 30 years. The Republican model is Putin, the fascism, the oppression, the sense of xenophobia everywhere…all of it.
