Which should pose so giant fucking questions about why so many democracies seem to depend on dictatorships for cheap shit that makes their country work.

There’s an argument to be made… and I think one that has been mostly shown to be true in the post-Cold War order that by more thorough integration of the world economy, we reduce the risks of wars starting. Typically, democracies aren’t going to attack each other, and dictatorships have mostly recognized that foreign investment is good for business. Sometimes you get a Saddam Hussein or a Vladimir Putin who decides they want to build an empire, but they seem to be more outliers than the norm.
