hi

I’m headed to bed after a long drive today.

We left Port Hope Simpson, Labrador this morning and arrived late this afternoon in Goose Bay-Happy Valley.

Port Hope Simpson, Labrador

Port Hope Simpson, Labrador. We stayed two days before our trek into the Labrador wilderness. Shortly after leaving Port Hope Simpson, you leave Newfoundland Time and turn your clock back a half hour to conform to Atlantic Time.

Changing Colours in Port Hope Simpson, Labrador

Above is a picture from the bed-and-breakfast across the Port Hope Simpson harbour, showing the trees changing colour.

This is a scary sign to see when you’re driving.

Scary Roadsign

Fortunately, Smart cars are easy on gas usage. We arrived in Goose Bay-Happy Valley with half a tank of gas left. From here, we turn west and head home.

We took the Labrador Coastal Route (Provincial Highway 510) from the ferry landing in Blanc-Sablon, Québec. (Blanc-Sablon is about 10km from the Labrador border.)

The Province of Newfoundland and Labrador offers satellite telephones for emergencies when travelling through Labrador. We picked up one at the first opportunity to carry with us. The phones allow you to call the RCMP if you have an emergency along the Trans-Labrador Highway. You can also call if you see other people in trouble. Essentially, the province can extend its safety coverage without putting a huge number of police cars on the very remote roads. You turn the phone in when you arrive at the other end of your trip. You have to sign a piece of paper stating you understand the phone is property of the Crown, and if you lose it the Crown will come after you in court.

Along the way at a parking stop, we ran into a group of Canadian Rangers headed to training in Goose Bay. (The Canadian Rangers are a Canadian Army Reserve force which provides a military presence and sovereignty patrols in remote areas.) They felt we were awfully alone in a Smart car, so they invited us into their convoy for the last 300km or so.

An example of how remote the area is. There’s a whole lot of no people in this picture. This is the Paradise River. The bridge is typical of the bridges in Labrador (steel truss, one lane, wooden deck).

Yes, amazingly smooth migration so far. I used to do migrations professionally and rarely saw one this smooth.

(Like the time a certain national telecommunication company’s data network was migrated to a new architecture. I got to watch it come up and then go down. I had to go retrieve the migration team. Who were in the parking lot downing celebratory beers. And inform them of the bad news… Tact was highly useful that morning. )

Cross country cycling strikes me as an impressive feat!

Back in 2004 a Virginia work colleague (in his 50s at the time) decided to cycle cross country West to East on a recumbent bicycle. Iirc it took him 6 weeks. And later that year he was diagnosed with nerve damage in his feet.

Do you remember where you cycled in Pennsylvania?

So a guy in Indiana is suing to stop Biden from canceling student debt by arguing:

Plaintiff Frank Garrison claims that because of the forthcoming student loan forgiveness, he will be forced to pay state taxes on the amount canceled — an expense he would otherwise avoid.

I suspect he won’t actually have to pay on his student loans very long after the lawsuit goes through:

The lawsuit is backed by Garrison’s employer, the Pacific Legal Foundation — a nonprofit libertarian law firm. It was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, the state where Garrison resides.

Iirc, one of the esteemed members here is from up that way.

I was just thinking that I did not remember Pa as being particularly bicycle friendly back in the 1970s or 1980s. Particularly in the mountains. So sounds to me that you made a wise decision to start close to Ohio.

Reminds me of one of the entries in the 1980 Pennsylvania slogan contest: “Pennsylvania, gateway to Ohio”. Another was “Pennsylvania, almost West Virginia”.

The winning entry? “You’ve got a friend in Pennsylvania”.

Some folks on twitter claim that the regular Russian forces were already evacuated. Others are claiming that it will be difficult for the remaining units to get their vehicles and supplies out along the single remaining heavily mined and shelled road.

Originally, Lyman was defended by the LPR 2nd Corps. Which gave a good accounting of themselves. But was screwed when the Russians sent most of the forces in the area to Kherson leaving huge gaps in the defense line and weakly defended strongpoints.

The doctor who okayed him to play should lose his medical license and probably get criminally charged. The coach should probably be fired and prevented from ever coaching in the NFL. It was absurd. They were basically lying by saying that he didn’t have a concussion and instead had back and ankle problems.

Episode 6 of Rings of Power (no spoilers): those who have been hating on RoP since it was announced or at least since the cast was revealed, will keep hating on it.

The rather absurd claims that the sets/costumes/graphics are not good… will still be leveled at the show.

The directors and producers are going for a particular look and it is different than may other shows. I think it is fine but young kids whose idea of cinema have been formed only in the past 10 years may not understand what is going on.

Overall I liked it (as I do the whole season) but I can see that episodes 6 will not change any hearts.

But at least one key aspects of Tolkien’s outline/timeline has been… brought about.

Roger Roger was a French composer in the 20th century, doing what was called “light” music. According to Wikipedia his family had connections to various somebodies in classical music.

Hard to find many of his recordings, but a very hard-to-research label “Archive Music Revisited” (which may be a Dutch company known as Sinetone) puts out digital copies of long ago analog recordings of various artists and have done so for Roger Roger.

Here’s the best copy of his “Paradise” that I can find, though the reissue album cover is a bit risque so behind tags:

For the “social media censorship is oppressive and wrong” crowd, it bears noting that one of the things social media has enabled, and not cracked down on in the slightest, is targeted harassment and abuse toward individual game developers because a depressing number of gamers are thin-skinned snowflakes who can’t handle when somebody changes “their” game in a way they don’t like. On top of blatantly unhealthy working conditions, now they have to deal with the vast unwashed, often in a negative way. No wonder the common reaction to such things is for game devs to just delete their social media accounts altogether.

I was able to login last night (and get around the Maintenance screen) by rebooting my phone.

This morning, when I opened Safari on my iPhone, the page that had been up (which is usually what I see in the morning when I start playing catch-up on comments from the prior day), it opened on the Maintenance screen. I couldn’t type in the URL; no matter what I did, all I could see was the Maintenance screen.

I tried Edge for a bit with the newer laptop. About the third time it deleted all my links when it updated I gave up and went back to Chrome.

At the time the “fix” for it deleting links was that you would save them in Explorer and then reimport them after the deletion. And it stayed that way for at least a year.

From my experience *all* the browsers are now massive memory hogs, leak memory, and essentially keep adding more and more bells and whistles as they tie themselves closer and closer to the underlying OS. Might make things more compatible with the tablets and mobile devices, but also becoming more and more inefficient for the core functions.

I do wonder if we are reaching a stage though where most variants are not going to cause more than congestion in most people (note I didn’t say all, even the flu kills).

You are probably right in that it’s going to become a species endemic virus like the flu that cycles around constantly and takes an annual toll of people, mainly elderly and immune system compromised. There will be an annual or semi-annual shot for it, but whether people get it or not cannot be readily predicted.

I have been watching it and don’t have any major complaints, but it really hasn’t been my cup of tea. I can’t put my finger on it, it isn’t bad, but it certainly hasn’t been must watch tv like say GoT was for me. Flu killed between 12,000 and 52,000 annually during 2010-2020. Current variants of COVID are killing over 100,000 annually AND there appear to be long-term health effects for some survivors. So twice as lethal as the flu in a bad flu year and potentially other serious consequences. But we will have to live with that for now, though I don’t know how many of the deaths are among the unvaccinated.

Nukes in the post-WWII era are basically like the gun in a bank robbery. The entire purpose is to convince people that yes, you really ARE crazy enough to use them, without ACTUALLY pulling the trigger on someone. (Pulling the trigger at harmless space is a potential option to help convince people you’re serious.) Because you know - and, on some level, everyone knows - once you pull that trigger, there is no going back. You are in for a BAD TIME.

If school shootings have taught me anything it is to not rely on the restraint of depraved psychopaths. If there are people out there that are willing to walk into a school and shoot dozens of children up close and personal, I have no doubt that a real depraved psychopath wouldn’t hesitated to kill millions of faceless people at a distance if it suited them. So far most of the psychopaths in positions of power are strongly motivated by personal preservation and enrichment, but I am not willing to predict how they might react if their position was put in jeopardy.

I agree we can probably call Putin’s bluff on nuke’s, but I think there are people who would relish the opportunity to go out in a blaze of glory and take as many people as they can with them.

Ok, this is probably all in the weeds, but I’m finding it amusing in a way.

Basically, someone in the white wing Reformed camp (can’t figure out who) did a podcast calling out Douglas Wilson, the wannabe pope of the Palouse (Moscow, Idaho) for his foul mouth. There are other, better reasons to call him out: he’s a pedophile defender and he covers up child and wife abuse. But let’s just go with it.

Costi Hinn, who pastors a church near me, was on the podcast. You’re probably thinking: “Hinn? Isn’t there a televangelist…?” And, yes, you’d be right, this is Benny Hinn’s nephew. His selling point is that he saw the error of his ways after working for Benny and he’s now leading a “true Bible-believing church.”

Well, this podcast came out, and Costi (apparently) criticized Doug’s foul mouth and OMG the fur began flying. Again apparently, Cost HEARD from PEOPLE that he shouldn’t have said what he said. So the podcast and a bunch of Costi’s Tweets were deleted and no longer exist.

Anyway, in light of this, here’s a posted tweet with an embedded tweet to give you an idea of what this was all about. The irony of this is that James White (the WhiteBeard dude) is already on my protest list for this weekend (3:30 pm ish, on the sidewalk of the church they rent on Stapley), but Costi may join him (at 9ish and 10:15ish) at *his* church. And, in fact, now that I read that Costi’s going to have a meeting with the odious wannabe pope of the Palouse, Douglas Wilson, on Monday, I think it would behoove me to show up with a sign saying, “We know who owns Costi, and it’s not Jesus. Hint: It’s Doug Wilson.” and “Costi Now Knows Who He Can’t Speak Against Hint: It’s Doug Wilson”. Would that be too mean?

From a year ago about Doug Wilson’s cult:

Inside the Church That Preaches ‘Wives Need to Be Led with a Firm Hand’
Evangelical pastor Douglas Wilson wrote that men “conquer” and women “surrender.” Christ Church survivors are starting to speak out.

The question then is if there is anyone in the Russian chain of command who will refuse to follow such a suicidal order.

How long do the Tories get to wreck and loot before they have to face a general election?

I chatted on Twitter with an old Scientology protesting buddy. The Tories don’t have to call an election until sometime in 2024 (when it’s automagically scheduled). Given the fact that the Tories would be completely wiped out if a snap election were held today, there is absolutely ZERO appetite among the Tories for a vote of no confidence. I asked if there was any other way to get a snap election and he said No. So basically they’re stuck with the Tories (even though they might sack Liz Truss) for the next two years-ish. Given that Truss only became PM on September 6, and since then the Queen has died and the UK has been plunged into an economic crisis, not even a month in. Way to go!

re: #150 Dopamine Fish

The term of a Parliament is apparently fixed at five years, unless the King dissolves the Parliament. That would result in the dissolution of parliament in December 2024, with the new Parliament being elected in January 2025.

IIRC, Parliament passed a “reform” of the system about a decade or so ago that made it harder to dissolve - and I doubt whether Charles III is going to pull a Charles I on them - so as I understand it, the Tories are pretty much locked into power for another two years.

And, maybe JMO, but polls notwithstanding, Labour doesn’t seem to be offering all that much of an attractive alternative - at least now: I suppose if the Tories really crater the economy, they will suffer (eventually) at the polls, but ISTM that they are going to try to use whatever time in power they have henceforward to institute as many changes as possible (i.e. do as much damage as they can - and leave the Opposition to pick up the detritus) while they have their unassailable Majority.

re: #194 Jay C

Yes, in 2019 - when the Tories came to power, coincidentally, I’m sure - they repealed the previous fixed-term Parliament act to make it so that only the King, on recommendation of the PM, could dissolve Parliament. (Previously, from an act passed in 2011, Parliament was dissolved by a 2/3 majority of the House of Commons, or on losing a vote of no confidence - which would have meant that BoJo’s recent exit would have resulted in a general election.) King Chucklefuck isn’t going to rock the boat this early into his reign, and it’s not like Liz is going to ask him to dissolve Parliament just because the Tories are wildly unpopular, so it looks like the UK is stuck with these pompous assholes until 2025. And by then, the attitude towards the Labour Party may be wildly different.

Meanwhile from Treasury:

WASHINGTON - Today, the U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) designated 14 persons in Russia’s military-industrial complex, including two international suppliers, three key leaders of Russia’s financial infrastructure, immediate family members of some of senior Russian officials, and 278 members of Russia’s legislature for enabling Russia’s sham referenda and attempt to annex sovereign Ukrainian territory. In addition, OFAC issued new guidance that warns of the heightened sanctions risk that international actors outside of Russia would face for providing political or economic support to Russia as a result of its illegal attempts to change the status of Ukrainian territory.

“We will not stand by as Putin fraudulently attempts to annex parts of Ukraine. The Treasury Department and U.S. government are taking sweeping action today to further weaken Russia’s already degraded military industrial complex and undermine its ability to wage its illegal war,” said Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen. “We are also targeting key leaders in Russia’s financial architecture as part of our aggressive and coordinated effort to hold Putin and his enablers accountable for his unprovoked invasion, and limit their ability to prop up their economy. The Treasury Department, U.S. government, and our allies will not hesitate to take swift and severe actions against individuals and companies inside and outside of Russia who are complicit in this war and these sham referendums.”

My point exactly. The NFL has a concussion protocol, but they obviously did not follow it, Tua Tagovailoa played again last night, was hit again, apparently exhibited a particular concussion sign (decorticate posturing) and was taken to the hospital. Probably, and when he suffers a career-ending brain injury in that game and ends up like Herschel Walker (see what I did there?), the league will probably just brush over it, say a few performative words, and continue throwing young men in their prime into the Colosseum for the entertainment of the bloodthirsty masses.

My wife and I went to Canadian Forces Base Goose Bay today, to tour the military museum.

I was not aware today is National Truth and Reconciliation Day in Canada, thus pretty much everything is closed. There are events all over Labrador of storytellers and elders of First Nations, telling their histories and particularly the horrors of the Residential School System.

In national news here, a group of Inuit confronted a French Oblate in France, demanding he return to Canada to face charges of running a child sex abuse ring for decades in Nunavut. France refuses to extradite him to Canada despite the outstanding warrants and an extradition treaty between the countries, arguing the Inuit are trying to persecute Christians.

During Pope Francis’s visit here a couple months ago, Inuit officials confronted Francis directly about the man (he fled to France six years ago when Canada issued a warrant for his arrest). Francis blew that off, and official complaints that the Church is supporting the man in France are met with the same response: The Inuit are trying to persecute Christians.

He is charged himself with child rape, and aiding and abetting hundreds of other child rapes.

It’s going to vary based on whether you’re on Wi-Fi, cellular data, directly connected to a broadband device, etc. It’ll probably take a day or two for everything to smooth over. DNS is super weird. With a work DNS, this is particularly likely, as backup servers are often set to much longer cache times due to not being hit as frequently. Also, if you are using a VPN, lookups can switch between DNS servers. There are a lot of variables in play; my suggestion eliminates all the ones that are within anyone’s complete control.

Classic Republican — projecting what your party is doing. After all, it’s not Fetterman but Bannon who wants to tear down this nation and rebuild it in his white supremacist vision. Wonder what Oz really believes — he’s Turkish and Muslim, doesn’t quite match the GOP and Bannon profile of an ideal American.

re: #259 Dangerman

My bil always calls them the intertubes.

(Yes, he knows)

There is a strict sense in which the tube analogy works: When you are working at the physical hardware level, and the “tubes” are actual cables run between data centers. Above this level, literally every layer of the Internet is built not to care which particular “tube” traffic is routed through, in the interest of guaranteeing as much as possible that the traffic will eventually arrive.

If you keep getting the maintenance page, there’s nothing I can do to fix it, unfortunately, because it’s a DNS caching issue. Eventually all the caches will use the new server, but it’s going to take time.

Thank you for doing this, and all the work you do! Runs much more peppy-er for me now.

Don’t know if this helps, but yesterday when you announced new site was up, i still got the maintenance message. It wasn’t until this morning that i was able to view the site.

I’m running Chrome on a mac mini.

re: #168 Hecuba’s daughter

Flu killed between 12,000 and 52,000 annually during 2010-2020. Current variants of COVID are killing over 100,000 annually AND there appear to be long-term health effects for some survivors. So twice as lethal as the flu in a bad flu year and potentially other serious consequences. But we will have to live with that for now, though I don’t know how many of the deaths are among the unvaccinated.

I was complaining on another thread about how my company is reopening the offices with an official policy of “no vaccine needed” which they are insisting on calling “My body, my choice”.

I had some correspondence with HR and they’re pretty much admitting they caved to the antivax loons, many of whom threatened to quit. So that’s fun…

My partner pointed out that it speaks volumes that the sane people aren’t threatening to quit because of their bullshit cowardly policy.

And I did say something about how wildly offensive it is to be using “My body, my choice” in regard to these freaks.

re: #222 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷

n national news here, a group of Inuit confronted a French Oblate in France, demanding he return to Canada to face charges of running a child sex abuse ring for decades in Nunavut. France refuses to extradite him to Canada despite the outstanding warrants and an extradition treaty between the countries, arguing the Inuit are trying to persecute Christians.

This is all nonsense.

France won’t extradite him because he is French.

Also Canada has never even asked for his extradition.

Also Canada has never tried to get him charged in France.
