Colbert: Biden Boosted by Good Economic News; Meta Won’t Factcheck Trump; Santos’s Suspicious Expenses

Politics • Views: 12,894

YouTube

President Biden may get some credit for the 2.9% increase in America’s GDP last quarter, Meta announced some guardrails around the former president’s return to Facebook and Instagram but said they won’t be fact-checking his posts, and Rep. George Santos has some fishy receipts on his campaign expense reports.

The mass baboon break-out in Paris was five years ago today.
Paris zoo shut after 50 baboons escape

The Paris Zoological Park has been evacuated and closed after dozens of baboons escaped their enclosure.

As zookeepers raced to round up the animals, armed police surrounded the popular attraction and sealed off nearby roads.

About 50 baboons were reported to have got out and congregated around the Grand Rocher, the fake rock centrepiece of the zoo, on Friday morning. Most had been rounded up and sent back to their shelters a few hours later, but four remained on the loose.

CNN:
‘You’re going to see acts that defy humanity,’ police chief says, as officials urge calm when Tyre Nichols arrest videos are released publicly tonight

Video of a traffic stop that led to the deadly beating of a 29-year-old Black man shows “acts that defy humanity,” the Memphis police chief told CNN on Friday, hours before the expected public release of the footage.

“You’re going to see a disregard for life, duty of care that we’re all sworn to and a level of physical interaction that is above and beyond what is required in law enforcement,” Chief Cerelyn “CJ” Davis told Don Lemon of the video in the Tyre Nichols case, noting it will be released on YouTube in four parts.

The Onion…

Police Urge Calm In Light Of Unspeakable Evil They Committed

In an attempt to quell public outrage over the upcoming release of body-cam footage showing the deadly beating of Tyre Nichols by five of its officers, the Memphis Police Department continued to urge calm Thursday in light of the unspeakable evil they had committed. “I understand that this heinous atrocity beyond the comprehension of anyone with a shred of basic human decency might be upsetting to some, but we are asking everyone to please maintain their composure,” said police chief Cerelyn Davis, explaining that while it was regrettable that officers were mercilessly slaughtering innocents in the streets with complete disregard for their humanity, it was no excuse for causing a big commotion.

U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said: “As alleged, the defendants are members of an organized crime group hired to assassinate, right here in New York City, a U.S. citizen of Iranian origin who has been critical of the regime’s autocracy and its disregard for human rights. This is the second time in the past two years that this Office and our partners at the FBI have disrupted plots originating from within Iran to kidnap or kill this victim for the ‘crime’ of exercising the right to free speech, to independent political thought, and to advocating for the rights of the oppressed and disenfranchised inside Iran. Thanks to the extraordinary efforts of the career prosecutors and FBI agents who led the investigation, this new plot to silence the victim has been disrupted and the defendants will face justice in an American court.”

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said: “The Victim in this case was targeted for exercising the rights to which every American citizen is entitled. The Victim publicized the Iranian Government’s human rights abuses; discriminatory treatment of women; suppression of democratic participation and expression; and use of arbitrary imprisonment, torture, and execution. The Department of Justice will not tolerate attempts by an authoritarian regime to undermine those protections and the rule of law upon which our democracy is based. We will not tolerate attempts by a foreign power to threaten, silence, or harm Americans. We will stop at nothing to identify, find, and bring to justice those who endanger the safety of the American people.”

Deputy Attorney General Lisa O. Monaco said: “Today’s indictment exposes a dangerous menace to national security - a double threat posed by a vicious transnational crime group operating from what it thought was the safe haven of a rogue nation: Iran. As national security and criminal threats continue to blend, the Department of Justice will use all its tools to zealously protect freedom and hold accountable all those who would use violence to undermine it.”

Ah. But they do eat possum in some spots.

Growing up in central FL, we would find a possum trapped in our garbage can from time to time.

When our maid, Bell Dora asked for the first one to cook for her family, my mother asked how could you cook and eat that animal?

Bell Dora responded that it don’t eat no different than a pig, and you all eat pig.

If we caught a turtle fishing out of the lake out front, the turtle would go to Bell Dora.

May God bless Bell Dora, she asked our parents if she could take us to her church, cause she was concerned that us poor little babies would otherwise not go to heaven.

Went to a wild game feed as a fund raiser for a gun club once. IIRC, there was

Squirrel - Very Good
Rabbit - Very Good
Deer/Venison - Very Good
Wild Boar - Very good
Moose - very fatty and meh.
Bear - even more fatty & not very good at all.
Elk - exquisite
Ostrich - hate to say it but just like chicken ;)
Various typical game birds - duck, goose, pheasant, quail, etc - fine, just roasted birds.

During small game season in my youth dad and I would hunt rabbits and squirrels. Mom would cook them up. As you said above, they can be very tasty.

In a war of attrition, Ukraine won’t win.

You are correct, as long as the ratio of casualties on both sides are equal to or less than the ratio of the fighting population. But there are a number things that can help Ukraine win:

1. Weapons from the west that are injuring or killing Russians faster than Ukrainians are dying.
2. The willingness of the population to fight.
3. The skill of the fighters.

There’s also potentially the Russian citizens getting tired of losing their sons, the same way that the US left Vietnam even though we kept winning the big battles (Tet, for instance).

As Dobbs showed them, if you get the perfect storm of Republicans running your city, state, and country, you may get your batshit crazy bill passed. What’s so frustrating is that even a meth-hobbled mollusk can see how blatantly anti-1st Amendment this bill is. Yet with the current environment, a year from now Alito may be hearing the case and going “Well, maybe just this one time we can let government forbid people from using words I don’t like.”

Florida Cops Charged With Horrific Beating of Handcuffed Homeless Man

Two Florida police officers have been arrested on charges of kidnapping and beating a homeless man. Rafael Otano, 27, and 22-year-old Lorenzo Orfila responded to a disturbance call at a shopping plaza Dec. 17 where they handcuffed homeless man Jose Ortega-Gutierrez and put him in a Hialeah Police car, despite surveillance footage not showing any reason for him to be detained, according to Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle. The cops then took him to an isolated location and proceeded to beat him while he was still handcuffed, Fernandez Rundle said. Ortega-Gutierrez said he woke up bloody and freed from the handcuffs, and reported the alleged assault to police. The homeless man—who doesn’t know how to read in English or Spanish—was allegedly asked days later to sign an affidavit that said he’d been arrested for drinking and wasn’t beaten by police.

the cops have been fired but, like the Memphis police incident where the victim was black and all four cops were black, the victim was Hispanic as were the two cops.
Systemic racism doesn’t always require the cops to be white.

OTOH, kinda looks like having the cops not be white results in much swifter justice for the victim.

How long do you think Ukraine’s man and woman power will hold out?

War (and humans) is/are very complex and very hard to predict. A lot of highly experienced analysts did not believe that the Ukrainians would survive and even prosper a year in.

At this point, the Ukrainians seem to continue becoming better organized and better equipped. And is still mobilizing fresh soldiers. The Russians appear less successful.
(And yes, Russia’s population is 3-4 times the population of Ukraine.)

I am more optimistic now than a year ago that the Ukrainians are going to persevere and increase their successes on the battlefield.

I do think that we will get a better idea as the spring and summer offensives and counter maneuvers ‘play’ out.

Regarding ‘holding’ out.

As long as the Ukrainians are willing to fight, I do not think that the Russians can win.

Such a fight might be over in a couple of years of conventional war. Or it could take a generation of guerilla war. But I am not convinced that Russia can bring the long term resources needed for a long fight against a determined Ukraine.

One note - Despite the movies and propaganda, wars are a mess and things are rarely obvious clean triumphs. I do not expect a complete Russian collapse. Which means that there will likely not be an unambiguous end to the war.

Thank you for your very well thought out response. I am not trying to be a negative Nelly, just trying to be observant. I worry that with the constant request for more equipment, will come the eventual request for manpower, and a slow walk to a wider conflict. I write this here, because every time I do, I am wrong, and I do not want to see any more suffering.

Thank you for your kind words!

A few more thoughts. As always, ymmv.

Sadly, these are my best guesses as I still have not figured out how to see the future with 100% accuracy.

As the saying goes, the below guesses are worth every penny you spent for it. ;)

I do not see you as a “Negative Nelly”. The position you described was, and is still held by many experts.

I agree with you that the suffering is terrible. Sadly, since this war was started by the Russian administration for their own benefit, I do not think that peace negotiations with Russia will reduce that suffering. And I expect that there will be a lot more before this current round of fighting ends.

Regarding manpower, the Ukrainians do not seem to have run out of motivated and high quality manpower yet.

The Russians seem to be having more problems in that area. And I do not see how their mistreatment of current soldiers is helping that problem.

Regarding aid. I think that we in the West are going to be helping the Ukrainians for the next generation rebuild their country. Both from the destruction caused by war and from the post WW2 economic mismanagement. I think that the end result will be well worth it.

(There are some family back stories there I might discuss at some point.)

Regarding military aid. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, much of the West significantly disarmed and concentrated on economic development. This is a major reason why there is difficulty in rearming Ukraine. Fortunately, the West has a much larger economy (and population) than Russia. And is starting to respond.

Russia had a leg up do to the massive stockpiles of Soviet arms. However, this edge seems to be eroding very quickly. For a bunch of reasons.

Regarding NATO having to intervene. The general assumption is that Russia is losing to Ukraine. Adding even more enemies would not be a winning move. Particularly if those new enemies were larger and even more capable than Ukraine.

From what I see, many analysts see Putin’s behavior as avoiding risk. He has been seen to back down when threatened with significant punishment for some action. The big question is how good Putin is at identifying risk.

As one article put it (paraphrasing here) “Putin clearly does not want to risk spending his last days trapped in a dark cold underground shelter eating dry rations. But how good is Putin at identifying risk?”

From articles I have read, it seems that the Biden Administration has been very careful at outlining red lines and results were they violated. In return, Biden has also made commitments to the Russians on limiting our aid to Ukraine.

A lot of Ukrainian supporters have been very unhappy at what they see as too cautious an approach.

To my mind, so far, it seems to have been successful at keeping tensions a notch lower.

Florida Cops Charged With Horrific Beating of Handcuffed Homeless Man

the cops have been fired but, like the Memphis police incident where the victim was black and all four cops were black, the victim was Hispanic as were the two cops.
Systemic racism doesn’t always require the cops to be white.

OTOH, kinda looks like having the cops not be white results in much swifter justice for the victim.

Chauvin was arrested quickly too. The widespread deployment of cameras and their possession by almost every American has been a game changer in the enforcement of law against police. It has become more difficult for many culprits to manufacture false claims against their victims.

While Fallout 4 was praised when it launched in 2015, some may feel that the series has deviated significantly from its late 90s roots. However, it does feature one of the best Bethesda step-out moments in the guise of a seemingly wholesome family life torn apart by nuclear war. Players begin in their idyllic home with their loving partner and newborn son, Shaun. However, the threat of incoming atomic bombs sends the protagonist and their surrounding neighbors fleeing for a nearby underground vault, mere moments before the sky is filled with a terrifying mushroom cloud.

It’s a notable introduction, but one person felt it needed a dose of realism. As spotted by PC Gamer, Nexus Mods user Unreal Septim has released “More Realistic Intro,” a mod for Fallout 4 that tweaks the opening sequence. Essentially, once players start a new game, the beginning will play out as normal. However, within a few minutes, just as the newscaster makes the announcement about the incoming nuclear threat, the bombs go off before anyone has a chance to get to Vault 111, obliterating Sanctuary Hills and all who inhabit it, including the player. And then the game ends.

Fallout 4 Mod Makes the Intro More Realistic (GameRant)

I had a family with several little girls wanting to have a sleepover birthday. They rented our best suite so they could have a separate room for mom and dad. My daytime clerk yesterday upgraded someone else into the room without checking for incoming guests.

In the end, because they were understanding and polite, they got two adjoining rooms (door between them) one with a king, one with 2 queens, the 2nd room comped and a $50 coupon for the hotel restaurant. They get a better stay than they might have because they were decent while we worked things out.

School librarians vilified as the ‘arm of Satan’ in book-banning wars

In her time as a Texas school librarian, Carolyn Foote watched the image of her profession veer from the stereotype of “shrinking violets behind spectacles” cataloging titles to “pedophiles and groomers” out to pollute the minds of the nation’s youth.

“Librarians came from a climate of being so appreciated to hearing this message that we’re reviled,” said Foote, co-founder of Freadom Fighters, an advocacy group for librarians that has nearly 15,000 Twitter followers. “It was an astonishing turn of events.” A lot of librarians are asking themselves whether they want to remain in the profession, she added. “At least five people I know have retired early.”

Once a comforting presence at story circle and book fairs, librarians have been condemned, bullied and drawn into battles over censorship as school and library boards face intensifying pressure from conservatives seeking to ban books exploring racial and LGBTQ themes. Those voices have grown stronger in red states since the pandemic, when parental groups opposed to mask mandates expanded their sights and became more involved in how and what their children were taught.

Who is a good boy?! Cute pup and a happy boy.

A 63-pound pup who was deemed ‘too big’ and ‘too strong’ has finally found his forever home after an ‘unlucky streak’ of 14 failed adoptions.

Ronald, a playful mixed breed, was transferred to the SPCA of Wake County, a non-profit animal rescue in Raleigh, North Carolina, from a nearby municipal shelter on December 7, 2022, Fox News reported.

Within a month, the one-year-old went home with three different families for trial adoptions and was requested by 11 others, but his boisterous energy and size seemed to be a turnoff for potential owners.

They’re such an annoying company, but I like using google’s DNS (8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4) because they pick-up and propagate faster than any other DNS I’ve used.

I’ve been suggesting they change their DNS to either Google or OpenDNS.

Yeah. Videos.

His calling for his mom got me. It ought to get every parent, everywhere.

A lot of combat vets talk about hearing that from the dying.

Running into the police should not lead to a combat zone.

One of my favorite bands as a teenager SADLY still remains relevant 30+ years later.

Police Truck

Tonight’s the night that we got the truck
We’re going downtown, gonna beat up drunks
Your turn to drive, I’ll bring the beer
It’s the late-late shift, no one to fear

Let’s ride, ride how we ride
Let’s ride, low ride

It’s roundup time where the good whores meet
We’re gonna drag one screaming off the street

Let’s ride, ride how we ride

Got a black uniform and a silver badge
Playing cops for real, playing cops for pay

Let’s ride, low ride

Pull down your dress, here’s a kick in the ass
Let’s beat you blue, ‘till you shit your pants
Don’t move child, I gotta big black stick
There’s six of us babe, so suck on my dick

Ride, ride how we ride
Ride, low ride

The left newspapers might whine a bit
But the guys at the station, they don’t give a shit
Dispatch calls, “Are ya doin’ somethin’ wicked?”
“No siree, Jack, we’re just givin’ tickets!”

Let’s ride, ride how we ride
Let’s ride, ride how we ride
Let’s ride, ride how we ride
Let’s ride, low ride

My grandfather, who served in the American Army during World War 1 talked about that. How after a German attack, he would hear from No-Man’s Land, the German wounded crying out for their mother. He said that by the next day or so, the cries would fade and go silent.

No doubt inspired by a good, old-fashioned, Baltimore Police “Nickel Ride”.

The Clash - Clampdown (Live at the Lewisham Odeon)

Clampdown Lyrics
[Verse 1]
(The kingdom is ransacked
The jewels all taken back
And the chopper descends
They’re hidden in the back
With a message on a half-baked tape
And the spool goes ‘round
Sayin’ I’m back here in this place
And I could cry
And there’s smoke you could click on)
[Chorus]
A’what are we gonna do now?
Takin’ off his turban, they said, “Is this man a Jew?”
Workin’ for the clampdown
They put up a poster sayin’ “We earn more than you!”
We’re workin’ for the clampdown
We will teach our twisted speech
To the young believers
We will train our blue-eyed men
To be young believers

[Post-Chorus]
The judge said “Five to ten” but I say “Double that again”
I’m not (workin’ for the clampdown)
No man born with a livin’ soul
Can be (workin’ for the clampdown)
Kick over the wall, cause governments to fall
How can you refuse it?
Let fury have the hour, anger can be power
D’you know that you can use it?

[Verse 2]
The voices in your head are callin’
Stop wasting your time, there’s nothing comin’
Only a fool would think someone could save you
The men at the factory are old and cunning
You don’t owe nothin’, boy get running!
It’s the best years of your life they want to steal

[Chorus]
But, you grow up and you calm down
And you’re (workin’ for the clampdown)
You start wearin’ blue and brown
And (workin’ for the clampdown)
So you got someone to boss around
It makes ya’ feel big now
You drift until you brutalize
Make your first kill now

[Post-Chorus]
In these days of evil presidentes
(Workin’ for the clampdown)
But lately one or two has fully paid their dues
For (workin’ for the clampdown)
Ha! Get along! Get along!
(Workin’ for the clampdown)
Ha! Get along! Get along!
(Workin’ for the clampdown)

[Bridge]
Yeah I’m workin’ hard in Harrisburg
Workin’ hard in Petersburg
(Workin’ for the clampdown)
(Workin’ for the clampdown)
Ha! Get along! Get along
Beggin’ to be melted down
(Get along, get along)
Work
Work
And I ain’t giving away no secrets - ha!
Work
More work
More work
Work
Work
Work
Work

Dead Kennedys were from San Francisco, but I think it’s the same story no matter where you go.

re: #278 jaunte

If you have sufficient immunity to bonkers batshit craziness, go back and look at the stuff the John Birch Society was preaching. You can go through their screeds and replace the word “communist/communism” with “woke/wokeism”, and if you add a dash of Q-Anon you end up right back at the same place we are now. “Doctor Strangelove” parodied the John Birch Society a LITTLE in the character of General Jack D. Ripper, but the real-life Birchers would not have considered him a kook. He was a True Believer.

My dad said that possum was real greasy and not good to eat. He did say, and I quote, “Squirrel is good eatin’.” I’ve never had either.

My mistake. I thought it was a reference to the lawyer who has been challenging elections. Need to learn to read.
