Shawn Colvin: “The Starlighter” (Full 8-Song Animated Music Video)

YouTube

This is the complete, animated music video for my album The Starlighter. Four of the eight videos from this were released separately back in 2018. Now, I present to you for the first time, the Starlighter video in its entirety!

STARLIGHTER, my second record of lullabies with arrangements from the book ‘Lullabies and Night Songs’ was released five years ago today, produced by the amazing Doug Petty (as was the first lullaby record, called Holiday Songs and Lullabies). The arrangements from the book are by Alec Wilder and I learned to play them when my folks gave me the book at age 8 and was moved to pieces. Still am.

Visuals by Martin Hughes and Jordan Stone (WeFail.com)

LGBTQ Nation, today

The Tennessee House of Representatives passed two bills today attacking LGBTQ+ rights, including a bill banning gender-affirming care for transgender minors and requiring transgender youth to detransition by March 2024.

The other bill bans drag performances in any place where minors might be present.

Tennessee’s legislature gives trans youth 1 year to detransition

The state will also ban drag performances in places where minors may be present.

Homeschoolers will frequently say they homeschool their children because public schools are violent.

There is an archive of cases where home schools also turn violent, to which homeschoolers will then claim it is unfair to lump them in with public schools.

When Homeschoolers Turn Violent: Series Index (Homeschoolers Anonymous and Homeschooling’s Invisible Children)

One should read the Introduction tab first for the explanation of how Christian homeschooler violence is either covered-up or misrepresented as not school violence.

TikTok is facing a joint investigation from Canadian privacy watchdogs (Global News, today)

Canada’s federal privacy watchdog has launched a joint investigation with three provincial counterparts into the controversial social media application TikTok.

The federal privacy commissioner announced Thursday that their office will join privacy watchdogs in Quebec, British Columbia and Alberta to “jointly investigate the short-form video streaming application,” a post on the federal watchdog’s website said.

“The investigation was initiated in the wake of now settled, class action lawsuits in the United States and Canada, as well as numerous media reports related to TikTok’s collection, use and disclosure of personal information,” it went on to say.

There were always two Americas. Or more than two. In no sense should we think of American history where there was a uniform opinion on what constitutes what the US should do, or what the Federal government should do, etc.

Be careful of over-weighing the likes of MTG.

Look at the history of banks, banking, money, etc. in this country. It was a mess until the 20th century. Arguments over “free silver”, railroads, unions, etc. were all quite divisive.

American history is littered with violence, political violence.

Very grim perspective. And red states are eager to revert to the old days when people of color were denied the right to vote. If Florida actually allowed all “eligible” citizens to vote, it’s not clear that DeathSantis would have been governor, but large swathes of former inmates were denied the right to vote courtesy of the poll tax authorized by the evil 6 on SCOTUS. If somehow Alito and Thomas left the Court and replaced by Democrats , the situation would suddenly be very different.

UC San Diego conducted a small trial of the drug Suramin in treatment of autism. The study noted only a transient effect. That study was not followed up.

Suramin is used to treat African sleeping sickness and river blindness. It is not a controlled substance. It is given by injection. The drug was invented in 1916, and in the US can only be obtained directly from the CDC.

Fast forward ten years, and now antivaxxers are touting it as a “cure” for autism “caused by vaccines,” and claiming a person will go from “non-verbal” to “full sentences” in hours. Since the CDC is the sole source of the drug in the USA, that means the government is conspiring to “keep an autism cure away from the public”

The study itself noted that the drug is dangerous. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

In regions of the world where these diseases are common, WHO provides the drug for free. Thus, to get around the CDC, the hunt is on to get it from those countries.

Reddit’s r/VaxxHappened with commentary on the morans pushing this latest quackery.

Epilepsy news from the BBC (yesterday)

Sodium valproate: New drug guidance a ‘massive breakthrough’

Sodium valproate (marketed in the USA as Depakote) has been found to cause birth defects in pregnant women, and fertility issues in men.

A woman whose three children were born with disabilities after she was prescribed an epilepsy drug during pregnancy has welcomed new GP guidance.

It is thought thousands of UK children have been harmed by foetal exposure to sodium valproate since the 1970s.

Catherine McNamara, from Hull, says new safety measures will make a difference, but added there was still a need for a public inquiry and compensation.

The government said patient safety was its “top priority”.

A drug safety update states women and men under the age of 55 should not be prescribed the drug unless two separate specialists agree it is the best course of action.

Valproate: reminder of current Pregnancy Prevention Programme requirements; information on new safety measures to be introduced in the coming months (United Kingdom government)

On a personal note, when I was prescribed Depakote by the US Navy, I could never keep it down: I suffered constant vomiting. A Jacksonville bus driver tossed me off a bus riding from NAS Jacksonville to Jacksonville Beach where I lived because I tossed my cookies on the bus, a couple miles from my apartment. He didn’t seem to care it was a medical issue, and left me on the side of Beach Blvd. in Jacksonville.

In the United States, the FDA has placed a black box warning for suicidal ideation from Depakote, which can occur long after the medication is discontinued.

The FDA has also weighed in on the birth defect issue discovered in the United Kingdom.

Most anticonvulsant medications have a black box warning about suicidal ideation. My own medication has such a warning, along with drug dependence leading to abuse, and death from sudden withdrawal of the medication.

This is a really good article.

While most of the media was breathlessly predicting sweeping Republican gains in the midterm election (“Red Tsunami Watch,” Axios blared in a late-October headline), Rosenberg was the most visible public skeptic of the GOP-surge scenario.

For months, in a series of interviews, blog posts, and tweet streams, Rosenberg challenged the predictions of Democratic doom and highlighted a long docket of evidence—polls, early-voting results, fundraising totals, the Kansas abortion referendum—that contravened the prevailing media narrative. For anxious Democrats, in the weeks before the election, he was as much therapist as strategist.

Apart from a few allies, such as the Democratic data analyst Tom Bonier, Rosenberg was so alone in his conviction that Politico wrote last summer that his “proclamations would carry profound reputational risk” because “history is on the side of big Republican wins this cycle.” Instead, after the election, Vox called Rosenberg “the guy who got the midterms right.”

How the AIM-9 missile operates…

[Embedded content]

Video

According to Bill Gunston in Rockets and Missiles (1977), the first operational Sidewinders, the AIM-9B of 1956, cost $2400 each. The current AIM-9X is $476, 000. The X has incomparably better electronics but still does basically the same job. The B was immediately deployed in huge numbers and was first taken into combat by F-86 Sabres of the Republic of China (ie Taiwan) Air Force during the Formosa Straits crisis of 1958.

Many original AIM-9Bs have been modernized and are still in military inventories around the world, though the Xs and most current versions are new builds.

I think the Ukrainians are extremely good at body count estimates. The Russians thoughtfully leave lots of their folks on the ground for body counts, and YouTube is filled with drone footage from Ukraine flying over areas littered with dead russkies. I would say that combined with u.s. super spy satellite imagery, those figures are probably a bit conservative.

Ben & Jerry’s and Magnum ice creams are undergoing a secret new recipe revolution to stop them melting at higher temperatures.

The aim is to make the cold treats stay solid for longer in warmer conditions as part of a drive to save energy and slash the carbon footprint of the brands’ owner.

British consumer giant Unilever has not disclosed exactly how it will make the new ice cream, but experts believe the answer is likely to lie in either using more starch, or removing some of the sugar.

The worst war fought in Ohio since the Toledo Strip War (Wikipedia) between the State of Ohio and the Territory of Michigan (in which the only casualty was a non-fatal stabbing of a law enforcement officer).

As a frontline reporter Lizard for this conflict I can report that the front is currently so hot no one is having any trouble crossing the state line.

SBF Accused Of Massive Campaign Finance Violations, Too

We learned back in December that Sam Bankman-Fried was accused of more than just crypto-related scamming. A single count of the original indictment alleged significant campaign finance violations. But a superseding indictment publicly released yesterday offered considerable new detail about that aspect of the case, including the use of straw donors and corporate funds.

The new information makes this one of the largest campaign finance cases in recent decades. Consider the numbers from the superseding indictment: “over 300 political contributions, totaling tens of millions of dollars.”

The gist of the new allegations is that while SBF was known before his crypto exchange FTX came crashing down as a major Democratic donor (the sixth largest, with nearly $36 million contributed in the 2022 cycle), he was also allegedly giving to Republicans and “left-leaning causes” in significant amounts using corporate funds but through straw donors to keep it hidden from the public.

Alex Jones Refuses to Give Up Details of Pet Cat in Bankruptcy Proceedings

Oh there’s a punch line that is so obvious…

thedailybeast.com

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones is taking on the Department of Justice in his bankruptcy proceedings following court-ordered debts of $1.5bn in damages to relatives of victims in the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. However, the real stoush, it appears, seems to be over his pet cat. Last week, details of Jones’ finances were released in a Texas bankruptcy court which revealed that despite filing for bankruptcy in December last year he still manages to spend almost $100,000 a month and has $10m in assets. Among those spendings, it was noted, was a cat. On Thursday night, Jones’ wife, Erika Wulff Jones, posted a video airing his grievances over the Department of Justice’s alleged questions surrounding the feline during a bankruptcy hearing. The cat, we now know, is a ragdoll breed called Mushu, and was named by Jones’ daughter two years ago. Mushu is seen cradling Jones as he says, “OK, so this is not a joke, this is real and it really happened.” “They spent probably five minutes of the meeting that was over 3 hours long, on my cat. They wanted to know if assets were hidden in the cat.” Jones admitted the cat cost $2,000 but “we really do love it” and the DOJ was “very serious about the cat and its value and they may want the cat for Sandy Hook families.” Jones described the DOJ’s questioning over the cat as “harrassment” and said “the deal’s broke, you aren’t getting the cat. This is next level.” Jones questioned: “What? You want my children next? You want to sacrifice my children or something?” Jones alleged the DOJ were questioning him over the value of the cat “to stir me up. It makes me really upset for this country. Now they want my cat. The line in the sand is, you cannot have my cat.

You deserve all the karmic retribution you’re gonna get you fat fart.

But at the state level, the GOP is determined to criminalize abortions nationwide, and to punish women and their doctors for even contemplating abortions.

They’re determined to make sure that abortion is unavailable to anyone but white privileged women who can always get what they need for the right price, while everyone else is must face burden of trying to raise a child in a situation not intended by the woman. The burdens will fall hardest on the poor, persons of color, and perpetuate cycles of poverty and hardships.

Russia started this war. They have the means to stop it by withdrawing entirely and stopping indiscriminate and purposeful attacks on civilians (war crimes).

Ukraine has fought to protect its sovereignty and Russia doesn’t give a shit about Ukrainian sovereignty. They’re trying to restart a Russian empire, and the West has seen fit to back Ukraine against these fucking Russian fascists.

You can argue that the US and West aren’t going fast enough to give Ukraine the weapons needed to beat Russia quickly and decisively, but it’s also a function of how big the military is, how quickly it can absorb and integrate the new weapons, etc., but Russia’s actions are the ones that must be held to account, because they started this fucking war.

They have the means to end it today.

The Idea Of The Lone, Violent White Extremist Is A Myth, And Its Dangerous

After decades of research on numerous attacks that have left scores dead, we have learned that extremists are almost always part of a pack, not lone wolves. But the myth of the lone wolf shooter remains tenacious, reappearing in media coverage after almost every mass shooting or act of far-right extremist violence. Because this myth misdirects people from the actual causes of extremist violence, it impedes society’s ability to prevent attacks.

The vast majority of far-right extremists are, in fact, otherwise ordinary men and women. They live in rural areas, suburbs and cities. They are students and working professionals. And they believe their extremist cause is justified. This point was illustrated by the spectrum of participants in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection.

The view on all the tankie and Putinversteher sites is that the US is fighting a proxy war which it is prolonging by aiding Ukraine, causing unnecessary suffering and destruction.

It is taken as given that USA and NATO provoked Russia into firing the first shots, just as it is maintained that they were only defending themselves against Western Capitalist Zionist Fascist encroachment and hegemony.

And Putin’s statements about how Ukraine has no right to exist as an independent sovereign state seem to get lost in their chain of rationalizing and relativizing Russia’s aggression.

Trump’s white supremacist dinner date put on No Fly List after threatening to strangle flight attendant

thedailybeast.com

That little Nazi asshole can lie all he wants about “political persecution” of being on the No-Fly list.

However, documents obtained by The Daily Beast tell a different story: Namely, Fuentes threatened to strangle a flight attendant who asked him to comply with the airline’s face mask rules.

In fact, court documents filed by the Transport Security Administration cite Fuentes’ own boasts about threatening the flight attendant on his podcast as corroboration for their employees’ claims about his behavior.

“”Let me tell you: I’m gonna land, and then I’m gonna get in the airport parking lot, and I’m gonna wait for you, and then I’m gonna put a mask over your face, your mouth and nose,” Fuentes recounted on his show about his interactions with the airline employee. “You still need to be wearing the mask even if you can’t breathe.”

How a box with classified documents ended up in Trump’s office months after FBI searched Mar-a-Lago

The Justice Department wants to know how a box containing a handful of classified records scattered among copies of presidential schedules turned up at Mar-a-Lago late last year, well after several rounds of searches of the property by federal agents and aides to former President Donald Trump, according to people familiar with the matter.

Investigators working for special counsel Jack Smith in recent weeks have interviewed a Trump aide who copied classified materials found in the box using her phone to put them onto a laptop. After a voluntary interview with the aide, prosecutors subpoenaed the password to the laptop, which she provided, according to one of the sources.

The classified documents contained in the box were discovered in December, after the Justice Department told Trump’s legal team to conduct yet another search for documents at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort.

People familiar with the Trump legal team’s efforts to locate documents describe a confusing chain of events that delayed discovery of the box, including having its contents uploaded to the cloud, emailed to a Trump employee, and moved to an offsite location before finally ending up back at a Mar-a-Lago bridal suite that is now Trump’s office - the very place that the FBI had searched just weeks earlier.

TFG has the actual laptop from Hell. I won’t hold my breath for the librul MSM outrage matching their coverage pearl clutching over the docs found in Biden’s residence.

The Republican plan to drive teachers to quit is accelerating.

A new trend on Tiktok, known as #TeacherQuittok, is showing masses teachers sharing their stories as they leave their increasingly hostile workplaces, VICE News reported on Friday.

vice.com

The videos tell the same story, over and over again: Though teachers love their students, the current pressures on teachers have made this demanding, high-stakes career even more difficult, and for many, unsustainable. And while #TeacherQuittok might seem like a trendy niche in a little-known corner of social media, it’s a window into the larger crisis in American education.

Meanwhile, the morale of those already in the field has plummeted. A 2022 study conducted by the Education Weekly Research Center found that just 12 percent of teachers nationally are very satisfied with their jobs, and a study from the National Education Association found that 55 percent of teachers are considering leaving the profession earlier than planned.

Here’s the thing; Margarine Tater-Greens doesn’t think she’s calling for a civil war. The “national divorce” rhetoric is intended to persuade sane and rational people to avoid civil war by just letting the Republicans go and form their own country and do whatever the fuck they want. They seem not to realize that we have a vested interest in not allowing that; the same was true in 1861, which is why we decided to use force to put down the insurrection in the Confederate states.

That’s what I think she wants.

It’s what happens when MTG and her Nazi ilk spend their lives on social media and not in reality. For the last 30 years I have lived in blue counties in red states (TN, TX, and FL). While there are obnoxious RW assholes spouting ridiculous nonsense, the reality is that the vast majority people go about their daily lives irrespective of our political identities.

Presta has been seeing the vet since Nov. He has gained a pound since then, which is good, but his other symptoms remain (with some fluctuation). The latest theory is small cell lymphoma in the gut, which is common in old cats, and slow to progress. He was getting me up every three hours to be fed (poor absorption of food), now with his new med, he’s getting me up every hour and a half. It’s driving me crazy.

But at least I was awake for my brother’s text that he has been given a flight from Newark to Portland via LAX. So he’ll get here tomorrow, then Tues. he gets on a train to LA.

Dershowitz’s position then, if I remember it correctly, was that those who possess and consume were unlikely to actually move on to act out upon those impulses. It was an argument one could find back then on the sexual libertarian side.

With what we now know about Epstein, Dersh’s association with and defense of Epstein and the massage makes one wonder about just how “theoretical” Dersh’s 2002 essay was and to what extent, if any, he was doing more than playing Devil’s Advocate.

It’s always other people’s fault that fascists are repulsive.

The Ohio couple at the center of the Nazi homeschooling scandal have spoken publicly about their online community of Hitler-loving parents and have defended their actions as “just extra fun” and “so wholesome.”

Predictably, they have also blamed “antifa” for negative coverage of their pro-Hitler homeschooling network.

Katja and Logan Lawrence were unmasked last month as the couple running the Dissident Homeschool network from their home in Upper Sandusky, Ohio, in reports from VICE News and HuffPost, which were based on a report from the anti-fascist research group known as the Anonymous Comrades Collective.

Starting in late 2021, the couple ran a now-deleted Telegram channel with over 2,500 members, and shared their own classroom resources, weaving Hitler quotes, antisemitic themes, and white supremacist ideologies into their math lessons and homework assignments.

In their first public comments since they were unmasked, the Lawrences staunchly defended their actions.

“The chat was so wholesome,” Katja Lawrence told the Nazi-promoting website Justice Report in an interview published on Monday. “It was mostly homeschooling moms that were lifting each other up when things got difficult.”

In reality the content shared in the channel was deeply racist, including a lesson plan to mark the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. last month that described the assassinated civil rights leader as a “deceitful, dishonest, riot-inciting negro.”

The Lawrences blasted the mainstream media for “cherry-picking” the neo-Nazi aspects of their lesson plans, claiming that these were “just fun extras” they added to the regular curriculum they taught their four young children.

“We were deliberately made to look very unappealing,” Katja Lawrence said.

The largest Republican voting block is in California. The second largest Democratic voting block is in Texas.

The point of the “national divorce” rhetoric is that Democrats would all move to blue states, and Republicans to red states, and then we’d essentially revoke the Supremacy Clause and each state would be responsible for its own affairs. Quite aside from the massive logistical headaches that would cause, the point being made here is that wingnut Republicans can’t even agree amongst themselves what set of religious laws should apply. They’d wind up fracturing basically into city-states, as communities of marginalized conservative communities band together a la the original Mormons to survive.

Yeah, as I’ve said over and over, these numbnuts think their fellow travelers are either “separated brethren,” “cultists,” “Mary worshipers,” “not Christians,” etc. etc. etc. If they actually got their hands on real power, they’d start fighting over who would wield it, and then we’d get the 21st century version of the European Wars of Religion. I am not the trier of fact here, and I’ve not paid a whole lot of attention to this case, but man, if this guy did what the government said he did—killed his wife and son to get the heat off him and his financial issues—then he’s the lowest of the low. In another way, this just says volumes about how some men think they can use their family members, up to and including death, to protect themselves. Blargh.

Far Cry 3, 4, and 5 are great and I definitely recommend them if you have a Steam account (when they are on sale, they currently are not). I found myself going back and trying to silently take their bases using only a bow. Far Cry Primal was boring to me. Far Cry 6 is very good, but I kind of got lost in it and my interest waned after a while. Far Cry 6 is available on Epic Games only.

This is basically what happened just before the Ukrainian offensive last fall.

The Russians had so depleted their forces by attacking that when the Ukrainians counterattacked, the Russian defenses totally collapsed.

It is one of the scenarios currently being discussed by analysts as possible over the next 6 months. Two counter arguments that I have heard are that (1) there are still a lot of recently mobilized Russian soldiers that have not yet been committed and that (2) there is likely another mobilization round that is either currently happening or is about to happen.

Another issue is that the Russian Army views Wagner and Prigozhin as a threat and is uninterested in helping him/them. So might not move quickly to rescue him/them.

Except she made clear that she thought the same military would be there to protect both “nations”. Who knows what vision she actually has in her pea-brain? But months ago I had a similar discussion with a Bernie friend who didn’t envision our separating into 2 nations but more believed that everyone would migrate to a state with their views — so an ultimate states’ rights believer — where each state could have its own laws. That’s what I think she wants.

I believe we tried something like that at the beginning of the Republic. Didn’t work out too well.

I will admit, atomic bomb deniers are a new one for me.

I once met a fellow in London who insisted that WW2 was all just staged: they had people go underground during fake air raids and shone bright lights to blind anyone left above ground and then just blew up everything to clear the cities for urban renewal, the battles were just staged set pieces to get rid of excess population.

And if WW2 was faked, well then, we know what that means for the Holocaust…

I was reading an article on having fish on Fridays at NPR (decent article, goes into the actual reasons rather than the usual myths). But it reminded me of my late Father In Law. He grew up Baptist in Alabama. His father made burgers every Friday night for dinner. Ed was thus in for a huge culture shock when he married a Catholic girl from Wisconsin. In the end he found a 24 hour diner in town and would not eat supper on Friday with the family. Instead he would wait till midnight and go to the diner for his hamburger. Apparently midnight was an acceptable cutoff for his wife ;)

If there’s a heaven, Ed, I hope you’re having a nice burger :D

Texas Republican seeks a ban on polling places at schools in the name of ‘school safety’

Citing “heightened emotions” at polling sites, a Texas legislator says voting is too dangerous to do on school campuses.

Isaac, a freshman Republican, filed a 124-word bill to bar polling places at any “institution of higher education” last week, and on Tuesday, she said she’s working on a bill to bar polling places at K-12 public and charter schools, too.

“We must do everything we can to make our school campuses as safe as possible,” she said in a release, mentioning the shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde last year and a deadly knife attack at a university in 2017. “I have experienced firsthand the heightened emotions that often occur at polling locations and I will not wait for more violence to act.”

Neither incident had anything to do with voting.

Texas and Michigan getting toxic waste and contaminated soil from East Palestine
wkbn.com

“…A total of 1,715,433 gallons of contaminated liquid have also been removed from the immediate site of the derailment. Of this, 1,133,933 gallons have been hauled off-site, with most going to Texas Molecular. A smaller amount of waste has been directed to Vickery Environmental in Vickery, Ohio.”

The wastewater has been delivered to Texas Molecular, which injects hazardous waste into the ground for disposal.

“…This injection, in some cases, is usually 4,000 or 5,000 feet down below any kind of drinking water aquifer.”

Everything should be fine until fracking mini-quakes create a route up to the aquifer.

Disbarment urged for GOP Arizona AG who hid Trump-debunking election fraud report

Reacting to a Washington Post report that showed that former Arizona Attorney General Attorney General of Arizona Mark Brnovich speaking at the 2019 Inauguration of Governor Doug Ducey (R) misrepresented and then buried a report that affirmed there was no election fraud in the 2020 presidential election, two legal experts asserted that he should face legal sanctions including disbarment.

The song and groove is very throwback ‘80s Eric Johnson . The solo style is very different though. She is very good.

re: #193 Dopamine Fish

The point of the “national divorce” rhetoric is that Democrats would all move to blue states, and Republicans to red states, and then we’d essentially revoke the Supremacy Clause and each state would be responsible for its own affairs. Quite aside from the massive logistical headaches that would cause, the point being made here is that wingnut Republicans can’t even agree amongst themselves what set of religious laws should apply. They’d wind up fracturing basically into city-states, as communities of marginalized conservative communities band together a la the original Mormons to survive.

And we have the stellar examples of the Palestine and India partitions after WW2. Intended to be peaceful of course. But turned into massive screw-up and the repercussions are still echoing today in both those regions.
