I haven’t bothered to watch any video from the “gun buy”. From what I remember, Trump is afraid of guns (?)… Did he actually handle the gun at all in any way that would make him appear minimally proficient?

GOP Will Try to Prove ‘Bribery’ Without Payments to Biden

“House Republicans, shooting for the history books, have set the bar for impeaching Joe Biden: They say they don’t need to prove that the president received money in order to charge him with bribery,” The Messenger reports.

“GOP investigators believe they don’t have to show that Biden took a ‘direct payment’… There are other ways to prove Biden engaged in the constitutionally impeachable offense Republicans are pursuing.”

So it is likely they will unconstitutionally accuse Biden of bribery that the Supreme Court has said is not bribery, in McDonnell v United States. In that case, the governor got rolex wacthes and over $175,000 to help the briber (set up meeting s with goernment officials , etc.). Yet his conviction was tossed.

If Republicans didn’t have double standards, they would have no standards at all. In any case, SCOTUS having basically made bribery legal is irrelevant to the GOP impeachment clown show. Even if House Republicans manage to get their circus act to travel outside the House, it will be DOA in the Senate, and I sure hope it gets treated with the contempt it deserves.

Thing is , as I understand it, the key art of RICO is to show that there was a racketeering institution involved in committing or conspiring to commit several spwecific crimes. If they can prove that such an organization exists, then anyone working for that orgnization can possibly be found guilty of racketering. This is how they got the mob bosses. Not b saying they had done the illegal things but that they worked for an organization that did those crimes.

The Talking Asshole lost again!

‘Major blow’: Judge finds Trump liable in New York fraud case

New York Judge Arthur Engoron on Tuesday found former President Donald Trump and others liable in a lawsuit brought by New York Attorney General Letitia James.

Engoron entered a partial summary judgment, finding Trump fraudulently manipulated the value of his assets. Trump’s son Eric Trump and former Chief Financial Officer Allen Weisselberg are named in the lawsuit.

According to New York Times reporters Jonah E. Bromwich and Ben Protess, “Engoron’s decision narrows the issues that will be heard, effectively deciding that the trial was not necessary to find that Mr. Trump was liable and that the core of Ms. James’s case was valid. It represents a major blow to Mr. Trump, whose lawyers had sought to persuade the judge to throw out many of the claims against the former president.”

Engoron also ordered sanctions for Trump’s attorneys. Each will have to pay $7,500.

yeah i dont think there’s a time limit on the criming

the point is he was ‘part’ of the scheme.

finally, give him one Scaramucci to see what was going on and not be comfortable.

re: #2 steve_davis

one thing I’d only just now considered: it’s possible one of the perhaps unconscious reasons for maga rage against biden is that biden probably IS benefiting economically from some of trump’s tax cuts. I mean, tax cuts do put more money into the spin, so while there’s inflation, there’s also growth, which means more jobs. I wonder if anyone has measured any correlation of trump tax policies to current economic growth.

I’m not an economist, but from what I’ve seen (and this is a pretty good example), tax policy doesn’t really do much for the overall economy:

The current top marginal income tax rate is 37 percent, or up to 40.8 percent for some taxpayers when combined with two Medicare surtaxes. The Biden administration offered proposals to raise the top rate back to 39.6 percent, where it was for most of the 1990s and 2010s.8 Analysts who rely on neoclassical models argue that there are large trade-offs between having a strongly progressive tax system and economic growth.9 But this theoretical trade-off is not apparent in the economic literature.10

A tax and economic growth trade-off also is not present in the data. Over time, there has been no obvious relationship between U.S. economic growth and the top marginal rate applied to individuals’ regular income. (See Figure 2.)

There’s also this on the corporate tax side:

The 2017 tax cuts’ lack of effect on wages in its first 2 years surprised few analysts, but the law’s lack of effect on corporate investment was particularly striking. While investment can be volatile, the Congressional Research Service notes that the biggest bump in investment since its passage occurred in the first half of 2018, too early to be the plausible result of a tax change just months before because investment decisions take time to plan and execute.

Most of this is because, as I’ve said in the past: Reagan won the big debate on taxes. All of our debates since have been arguing around the margins - a couple points on this bracket, a couple of points on that bracket, but otherwise we are looking at 4-5 tax brackets with the top one being somewhere around 35-40%.

I’m not an economist, but from what I’ve seen (and this is a pretty good example), tax policy doesn’t really do much for the overall economy:

no one sane sets policy or makes major financial decision based on the tax effect (at least shouldnt). it can help, or sweeten, but it shouldnt be the deciding factor. ie if the tax savings make a deal affordable, you can’t afford it.

because tax rates are not only a fraction of a dollar, they tend to be less than 50%, so low enough that if the tax effect is the clincher then it’s a risky deal because the margins are way too small. too many things that you cant control, besides tax effects can easily go wrong and screw it all up.

same argument with minimum wage or (not) paying over collected sales tax. if your margins are that thin, it’s your business model sucks, not the tax or wage rates.

Bolded part isn’t quite right. You have to do more than just work for them, there has to be proof of your intent to violate the covered statutes. This is why the GA RICO prosecutions against the Cop City protestors are much weaker.

Chesebro’s problem here is there’s not only proof of his corrupt intent, he was the architect of the fake electors scheme, but they have him committing six overt acts in furtherance of the criminal conspiracy. The short time period argument actually works against him here, in that it really only serves to demonstrate urgency, how narrow the time window was to complete the conspiracy and how every act was focused towards that end goal.

He doesn’t own Trump Tower, it’s owned by GMAC Commercial Mortgage. The Trump Organization is a tenant… but apparently not for much longer.

re: #69 goddamnedfrank

He may have to sell his assets within it, and given the ruling basically ends his ability to do business in NY that’s what I’d expect.

According to the wikipedia page, he does have a three story residence, and the Trump Org has two floors in the commercial part of the building. So, if it was a sale, there was probably something in the sale agreement. If it was a foreclosure, they may have just not got around to rebranding, or are waiting to sell to someone else who will rebrand.

Busted: Kevin McCarthy backtracks on Bob Menendez after being called out for George Santos hypocrisy

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) backed off his call for Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) to resign after being questioned about having different standards for Republicans and Democrats.

On Sunday, McCarthy said Menendez should resign after being indicted on federal bribery charges. McCarthy, however, has refused to call for the resignation of Rep. George Santos (R-NY) despite charges of alleged fraud and money laundering.

“Do you think that George Santos, who’s been indicted on federal criminal charges, should also resign?” CNN’s Manu Raju asked McCarthy on Tuesday.

“No,” the Speaker replied. “I think George could have his day in court, and I think Menendez could have his day in court.”

“Mr. Speaker, why do you think he needs to resign, then?” Raju pressed.

McCarthy immediately changed his position.

Turnips are yummy, even raw, when they are small (say, about 3” diameter or less) and freshly plucked from the garden. Big turnips make great jack o’lanterns.

re: #65 KGxvi

I think, based on what little I’ve read on the matter, it really doesn’t make much of a difference on major purchase. Maybe there’s a situation where people who are planning to buy a car get the entertainment system package because they’ve got an extra $200 a month because of a tax cut and the monthly payment only goes up $100 or so… but we really haven’t even seen tax cuts or raises have much of an effect on GDP over the years either.

Except the once. (the one Laffer used as his example for his ridiculous theory).

When during the JFK admin top rates were reduced from 90% to 70%, making the ultra-rich people’s take-home 3x as much…

People whose large incomes was the continuing flow from Grandpa’s work (Rockefellers, Fords) stopped pouring so much into their tax-free foundations. They took more money home and spent it on luxury goods.

People whose large incomes were the result of sporadic, occasional work (prize fighters, Vegas headliners) worked more.

The “regular” rich, whose bracket was also reduced (doctors, lawyers, restauranteurs and other successful store owners) just plain had more money to spend. 2nd cars, more clothes, consumer goods for the kids, and so on. And by the early 60’s, all those GI Bill college students were graduates with a pretty good income.

Europe and Asia still weren’t entirely rebuilt from WWII, they were too busy on infrastructure to worry about factories, America had no real competition. Those much busier manufacturers needed to hire a lot more people, upward wage pressure, the little kids wanted bikes and board games and sports equipment, the teens were buying records and concert tickets, the kids were also buying cars and gas…

GDP went up, income tax and sales tax receipts went up, the VA/FHA houses expanded property tax rolls by a lot…

To amplify, this decision is a judgement as a matter of law on Trump’s habit of valuing assets as he pleases (i.e. lying about them).

IANAL, but there seems to be no conceivable grounds for appeal here, especially since the relevant appellate court has already dismissed the Trumpco arguments as ‘frivolous’.

After all, is not what someone in NY is doing to Trump what happened to Lincoln? The latter was the target of animus by a former Confederate who wanted revenge on a US President.

I honestly cannot believe that any lawyer would sign off on telling a court that their client’s financial statements cannot be trusted because he explicitly put a disclaimer on them saying such. It has to just kill one’s soul to actually stand there and say that it’s okay that their client lied his ass off because he said up-front that he’s possibly a lying prick so if others signed off on loans/tax breaks based on those numbers then it’s their loss.

From Wikipedia:

In 2018, Forbes estimated the value of the estate at around $160 million, claiming it had appreciated since Trump’s purchase.[25] In a 2022 lawsuit filed by New York Attorney General Letitia James, it was alleged that Trump inflated the value of Mar-a-Lago to $739 million, when the property should actually be valued at $75 million.[39]

Yeah, I’m guessing that “$18M” valuation is way on the low side (though I’m sure the Trump creatures would be only too happy to rely on it for the tax base) - but 160M seems likewise over. Personally, I wouldn’t even stay there unless I was paid exceedingly well to do so…

California enacts nation’s first gun and ammunition tax

California Governor Gavin Newsom signed several firearms and ammunition-related bills into law on Tuesday, including one to tax guns and ammunition and another that places more rules on people seeking a concealed carry weapons permit and on the permit itself.

The signings come just days after a Newsom-led campaign to amend the U.S. Constitution passed out of the California Legislature.

The measure passed by legislators calls for a state Constitutional Convention to consider additional federal rules on firearms purchases and use, but two-thirds of states need to pass similar measures in order for the process to advance.

With the signing of AB 28, California will now add an 11% excise tax on the purchase of guns and ammunition, an amount that the bill’s author states is lower than the excise tax on marijuana sales.

There are exceptions to the tax, such as police agencies and businesses with extremely low sales.

Another significant bill signed into law on Tuesday is SB 2, by Sen. Anthony Portantino, which will change the rules for carrying concealed weapons.

California’s new law requires permit holders to be 21, bans concealed weapons from most public places, including parks, schools, government buildings, hospitals, and places where alcohol is sold, as well as as at public demonstrations and gatherings.

And, as always, Issac Bailey gets to the heart of the matter.

Think about the imagery. The standard bearer of the self-described “pro-life” party thought it cool to align himself with the shop where a young white supremacist was able to arm himself with a powerful weapon of war despite a questionable background. It was a purposeful photo-op. The tweet falsely claiming Trump bought a gun was to be icing on the cake. He didn’t have to be explicit, didn’t have to say he was courting the blood-stained hands of racists, white supremacists and white nationalists. All he had to do was show up at Palmetto State Armory and smile. They’d surely get the message, particularly after weekend rants on social media that included threats against those who oppose him…

And it’s not a wonder why Trump chose that place to make a campaign appearance. Because he wanted to send a message. That he cares more about himself than the health of this democracy. That if the country found itself amid another violent insurrection attempt next year, he would more likely cheer on the insurrections than call for calm or peace if he couldn’t get what he wanted.

As usual Eric is lying.

The attorney general’s office also said that Trump valued Mar-a-Lago between $347 million and $739 million during the period from 2011 to 2021, if it was sold as a single-family residence. However, during that same period, Palm Beach County assessed the property as worth between $18 million and $27.6 million, as it was restricted to being used as a social club.

The Judge didn’t rule that Mar-a-Lago is only worth $18 million. James simply noted that was the assessed value given the local covenant and zoning use restrictions. The extreme gap between those valuations and the complete failure to note those restrictions in his disclosures is where the fraud lies.

Man indicted for threatening to kill congresswoman spouted multiple QAnon conspiracy theories

A New Mexico man who pleaded guilty to threatening to murder a congresswoman is also an avid purveyor of QAnon conspiracy propaganda, according to new reports.

“The plea agreement brought before U.S. Magistrate Judge Damian L. Martinez of U.S. District Court in New Mexico on Thursday has to do with a telephone call Michel David Fox admits making last May to the Houston office of a member of the U.S. House of Representatives,” reported Julian Resendiz for Fox 5 News.

Per the court documents, Fox said on the call, “Hey, you’re a man. It’s official. You’re literally a tranny and a pedophile and I’m going to put a bullet in your (expletive deleted) face. You (expletive). You understand me, you (expletive).”

According to the report, after law enforcement traced the call to a cell phone in Las Cruces, FBI agents visited Fox’s house, where he admitted to making the call.

Court documents further reveal that Fox said he doesn’t actually have any guns — but also professed to be a member of the “Q movement” and believed Q would wipe out “the people who were causing all the world’s misery,” supposedly a cabal of transgender people who run the world’s governments and corporations.

More broadly, the QAnon movement believes that a small circle of elites sex traffics children and consumes their flesh to remain eternally youthful — an idea that has echoes of a more than a century-old antisemitic conspiracy theory.

QAnon believers have been implicated in several acts of violence before; from a man who shot a New York City crime boss, to a California surfing instructor who murdered his own children out of a belief they were “corrupted” by his wife’s “serpent DNA.”

There are three female members of Congress with offices in Houston who are Democrats: U.S. Reps. Sylvia Garcia, Sheila Jackson Lee and Lizzie Fletcher.

UAW President TORCHES Trump’s ‘Pathetic’ Record On Unions: ‘I See No Point In Meeting With Him’

I find the pathetic irony that the former president is gonna hold a rally for union members at a non-union business. And you know, all you have to do is look at his track record. His track record speaks for itself. In 2008 during the Great Recession, he blamed UAW members. He blamed our contracts for everything that was wrong with these companies. That’s a complete lie.

In 2015 when he was running for president, he talked about doing a rotation, taking all these good-paying jobs in the Midwest and moving them somewhere in the South where people work for less money, and then to make people beg for their jobs back at lower wages.

And the ultimate show of his- how much he cares about our workers was in 2019 when he was the president of the United States. Where was he then? GM- our workers at GM were on strike for 60 days. For two months, they were out there on the picket lines. I didn’t see him hold a rally. I didn’t see him stand up at the picket line. And I sure as hell didn’t hear him comment about it. He’s missing in action.

With Kroeger taking over Albertsons (which some years back bought Safeway and with that came a whole bunch of other regional brands), around my area one corporation will own nearly all of the large grocery stores.

The reason they won’t own all is because of Walmart, which has a dedicated food store in the area.

Anyway, the people working at these local stores have long had to suffer corporate take-overs squeezing their jobs.

And Kroeger is known to be among the worst offenders.

Retail positions are not usually treated well, and have not been so since the time of my grandparents, back when there were only mom and pop stores.

My personal take is that he was fudging the numbers by asserting that his personal brand was worth untold billions of dollars, as befits a real estate magnate, savvy business dealmaker, and President of the United States. That his brand valuation was all in his head is dryly accounted for in Judge Engoron’s absolutely flamethrower-wielding ruling. You really should read it. It is absolutely dripping with scorn for the pathetic showing Trump and his lawyers put on in his defense.

What resolution do you intend to stream at and how many streams at once?
Going by YouTube creator recommendations, here is a list to get the right ballpark.
Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions [YouTube Help]
If N is the name of concurrent streams, and B is the minimum bandwidth for said resolution stream, I’d go with (Bx2)x(N+1) or (Bx2)x(N+2).
As always, you may have hiccups in streaming if the server you’re getting something from is able to push thing at you at speed, but +1 or +2 the bandwidth of the number of expected concurrent streams should work.

I realize this is not a fair comparison because it’s Mar-a-Lago vs a private residence elsewhere in Florida. But the infamous Queen of Versailles house is 90,000 sq feet on 10 acres vs Mar-a-Lago’s 62,000 (maybe) on 20 acres. The Queen of Versailles house is valued at about 100 million — therefore having Mar-a-Lago valued at over 350 million would be reasonable.

Also, adding a second house on Xfinity is easy - just log into a different browser and go through the process and link it to your account at the end of the transacction.

Oh. Oh man. Trump got busted for over-valuing Mar-a-Lago in part because he claimed he could weasel his way out of signing away the development rights in Florida court. Loose Cannon, paging Judge Loose Cannon, please come to the white courtesy phone…

“Yes, I’ve found Jesus. He’s a big man in the cell next to mine, came crying to me the other day and said ‘Sir, I can’t believe how they schemed to get you locked up on false charges, sir! It’s those Bidens, they’re the ones who did this!’ Did I mention he was crying when he called me ‘Sir’?”

Quick question re: Internet Speed need.

For our new house, what speed of internet should I buy from Xfinity? I can do a gig but it’s pricey - If I can do streaming TV and basic work bullshit with 400K it’s a ton cheaper. I’ll only have 10 channels at the new place as I’ll use a smart TV and Amazon/Netflix/etc for streaming entertainment (not a priority).

What is the optimal for streaming TV where I won’t have to worry about buffering bullshit?

Buy the fastest possible, because six months from now you’re going to suddenly realize you want to do something data-heavy that you just haven’t thought of yet.

re: #58 Targetpractice

Now we watch Trump beat the land speed record as he rushes to the next highest court with demands that they immediately overturn this ruling and punish everybody involved for ever thinking of raising a hand against him.

Sadly for the ExPrez, this is state court and the highest he can go is the NY SC, who are gonna bury him because he’s a serial putz banger.
