Technology • Views: 14,895

In today’s episode, we look at some tech CEOs who may not make the headlines as much as your Musks and Zuckersberg, but who nonetheless have a huge (negative) impact on our society with their anti-worker, privacy-shattering decisions.

Tech CEOs, like most corporate bosses, only care about one thing: making money.

It does not matter to them how much damage they do in pursuit of that goal.

“Loser” has a nasty, negative ring. As a kindness, we should refer to Jim Jordan as “differently victorious”.

President Ebert to German soldiers returning from the Western Front at the end of World War 1: “No enemy has vanquished you! You return undefeated from the field of battle.”

And he was technically correct; they had only signed an armistice, the Treaty of Versailles would not be ratified until the following year.

Trump Is Taking His Legal Sh*tshow Overseas Now
Remember the Steele dossier? Time to think about that again.
By Charles P. Pierce esquire.com

From Politico:

His lawyer noted in court Monday that Trump is a “controversial figure” who “expresses himself in strong language” and has faced criticism from judges in the U.S. However, he said none of that is relevant in the current case…Tomlinson said [the Steele dossier] “contained shocking and scandalous claims about the personal conduct of President Trump” and included allegations he paid bribes to Russian officials to further his business interests. Trump’s case “is that this personal data is egregiously inaccurate,” he said. Tomlinson said Trump plans to vindicate himself in court by providing evidence that the report’s claims were false.

Oh, will he now? I don’t pretend to be a British lawyer even on this blog. (I look stupid in a wig.) So I am unfamiliar with British discovery procedures but, if they’re anything like ours, I’m anxious to see the evidence provided. I know British libel law is looser than ours is, but the former president* isn’t suing for libel. But his ability to use the legal system to dodge responsibility has now reached across the Atlantic. Go, Fleet Street. Attack.

Stand Your Ground obviously applies to price negotiations!

Reminds me of the Bircher freak who was head of Lubbock Right to Life a few years ago. He and his church were also open, up-front, advocates of hoarding and price gouging during shortages and emergencies. This would ensure that scarce goods were distributed to the people who were “best prepared to make use of them and would benefit most,” ie the wealthy. He asserted that actual possession was the ultimate negotiating position and should therefore be paramount. I asked him whether a shotgun in his face might, in fact, be a superior negotiating position. He thought that was immoral.

It is truly remarkable how the people who are the most outspoken about their commitment to Christ have adopted a theology which is very nearly the exact opposite of what Jesus is quoted as saying in the Bible. One would think a follower of Jesus would be hoarding supplies for the purpose of sharing with the community in a time of need.

If it was common for presidents to be so outrageously criminal our system would be better prepared to handle him. As it is, you need law enforcement and the judiciary to work together to properly contain someone, and even the good ones in those groups aren’t sure how to properly handle the situation.

The problem is that the Founding Fathers put so much faith in the basic integrity of people who would run for office. I’m pretty sure, if you asked them if a man who was currently actively being indicted for “high crimes” should be allowed to run for President, their answer would be, “Abso-fucking-lutely not, are you high?!” But they didn’t think they had to spell that out explicitly, and now, here we are.

Conditions of his bail do not include surrendering his passports nor does it require him to check in with the court to inform them of where he’s going. They require him to be present at court when required.

He’s running as an independent now instead of running for the Green Party nomination. He (and Kennedy) are going to have a very hard time getting on the ballot in all 50 states. It is a lot of work and very costly. There’s a reason why it hasn’t happened since 1992, and I’m willing to bet that a lot of states have made it even more difficult to get on the ballot since then.

My question: Some Republicans apparently are calling Jordan the Speaker-Designate. What in the world does that title even mean? Just that he has a majority of the majority? That a majority of their conference voted for him (just like they previously did Scalise) during their closed meeting?

You know things are fucked up when even the members aren’t bothering to show up for pizza themselves. They had their staffers grab boxes b/c things are in such a state of disarray. GOP can’t agree to even hold meetings in person at this point. They’ve got nothing to discuss, and the saboteurs are content with this outcome.

And you know it’s REALLY bad when Republican Congressmen won’t be shown with a Papa John pizza!

It’s their pretentious attempt to sound like they are united in their support for a single Speaker candidate. I think they came up with it after this absurd “let’s all pow-wow together and figure out who we can all support” closed-door process, which blew up in predictable fashion, when the lying backstabbers lied to his face and then stabbed him in the back.

lawhawk  Oct 18, 2023 • 1:00:31pm

No more voting for Speaker today. They’ll be at it again tomorrow, with the same outcome.

This is why the entire GOP needs to be razed. They know this stops work in Congress and the CR is set to run out in a few weeks. No speaker means no one to negotiate a new CR. No speaker means key legislation doesn’t get passed. No speaker means the extremist GOP intent on shutting down govt and defunding key programs gets to do it by other means.

That’s why they’re doing a vote a day. And they’ll still fail to pick a speaker. Because that’s the outcome they want.

Fetterman is the one who filed for Menendez’s expulsion:

Thus far, only one Senate Democrat has called for an expulsion vote to take place and say they would vote to expel Menendez: Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.), who lit the fuse of what has quickly become a nasty back-and-forth with Menendez over his future.

The two senators also got into an in-person tiff as they rode the escalator in opposite directions to the Capitol from the Senate subway area Tuesday morning. According to sources, Fetterman told Menendez that Tuesday would be a great day to resign.

Menendez reacted, telling Fetterman that he is hanging onto this issue too closely, echoing a line he told HuffPost a night earlier. Fetterman mockingly responded that he is “consumed” by Menendez’s indictment.

Shockingly, this fucking crazy person who spent all his “Democrat” time warbling on right-wing media bout how unfairly the real Democrats were treating him takes FAR MORE VOTES from Donald Trump than he does from Joe Biden. Which means Republicans are reacting correctly, if totally desperately, by turning on a dime and treating Kennedy like a virus for which there’s no vaccine.

As DoD civilians in Korea (79-80) we were required to maintain an emergency food stock. Cases of expiring C-rats from the commissary were recommended. (Some of them were older than the Vietnam war.) My favorite entree was beans and wienies. Once curiosity got the kids to the can of Thomas Date-nut dessert, the whole idea of a “reserve stock” sort of fell apart.

From a Sabine email.

This Is What Happens When You Let an AI Design a Robot

Researchers at Northwestern University asked an artificial intelligence (AI) to design a robot that could walk across land. The result is not exactly what you’d expect.

The AI first came up with a spongy block that would deform when water was pumped into it. This robot could jiggle but not walk. In the next iteration, the AI found a shape that would make the sponge hop and shuffle. Nine iterations and twenty-six seconds later, the robot could hop effectively. While Spongebob 2.0 doesn’t look like any walking creature we’ve seen before, it does have features that resemble legs, so maybe evolution was up to something with those.

Significance

AI systems have taken massive strides designing prose, artwork, gameplay, software, and proteins but have yet to master the design of complex physical machines. Here we introduce an automatic optimization method that can design self-moving machines—robots—from scratch by tracing failures in their behavior back to errors or inefficiencies in particular parts of their physical structure. Because this method improves the robot in this way, it can optimize the interdependent parts of the robot much more rapidly than the current approach, in which the designer tries different robot designs in a trial-and-error fashion. This opens the way toward bespoke AI-driven design of robots for a wide range of tasks, rapidly and on demand.

First, that is just such a Trump thing to say. Second, it’s a lie. I know, what a surprise. And Trump has told this lie before in the past, so it’s been fact checked. Trump vacillates between being first in his class or top of his class with honors. Well, he didn’t do that either. Both records from the University of Pennsylvania and Trump’s classmates dispute these claims.

In 1968, The Daily Pennsylvanian published a list of the 56 students who were on the Wharton Dean’s List that year — Trump’s name is not among them.

“I recognize virtually all the names on that list, ” 1968 Wharton graduate Stephen Foxman said, “and Trump just wasn’t one of them.”

1968 Wharton graduate Jon Hillsberg added that there was no indication on the 1968 Commencement Program that Trump graduated with any honors whatsoever. A copy of the program acquired from the Penn Archives lists 20 Wharton award and prize recipients, 15 cum laude recipients, four magna cum laude recipients and two summa cum laude recipients for the Class of 1968. Trump’s name isn’t anywhere on those lists.

“If he had done well, his name would have shown up,” Foxman said.

Do you have a union for this job?
When hubby started working (for a fairly short time) for the Post Office, the local union kept a pass-along bin for donated pieces of official clothing & accessories, free for new hires. Does your job have something similar?

All the best wishes for the next steps in this involuntary journey. Fingers crossed for you.

re: #148 Eclectic Cyborg

Just like everyone else, we simply don’t know, is there a limit to the number of times the GOP needs to self immolate before someone can rally them? Who will win, the “normies” or the “radicals”? I do believe that there is a small group of GOP members that are possibly reaching max frustration with their own party, who might throw in the towel and help elect Jeffries as speaker, but we’re talking a very small number, like the rough equivalent of the size the prevented McCarthy for so long. They know that doing so would be political suicide (among them the most outspoken is Representative Bacon of Neb.), so they would be doing so as a means of allowing the GOP to essentially shoot their careers as hostages in order to get the country moving again.

Not entirely sure that those folks have reached that breaking point yet.

I would not be shocked to see Jordan fail multiple times again and even attempts to renominate McCarthy and Scalise. I would not be shocked to see Stefanik make an attempt or a few others might put themselves forward as some sort of “compromise”.

Most Europeans have a unique idea about what Americans look like in each US state, and artificial intelligence has brought these views to life in lifelike images.

Midjourney, a system that creates images based on users’ text prompts, created an image for each of the 50 states based on how those across the Atlantic perceive them.

According to AI, Europeans think Alabamians typically have missing teeth, all Utahans are Mormons and Virginians are stuck in the Victorian era. And everyone is white.

I am shocked to learn that the latest wingnut creature has turned against them:

an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist National Poll released Tuesday offered an early prediction: Biden would beat Trump by 7 percentage points when Kennedy is factored in.

If the election were held today, Biden would snag 44% of the vote to Trump’s 37%, followed by Kennedy’s 16% with 3% undecided, according to the survey.

Head to head, Biden was leading in the poll - apparently Kennedy draws about 5% from Biden and 10% from Trump. But it’s honestly much more entertaining to see the results of a three person poll. As I said earlier though, I don’t expect RFK Jr to make the ballot all 50 states, the system is stacked against independents and third parties.

Yup,, thought that was curious.

Having said that, my cardiologist once drew a picture of the heart to explain a procedure. It was the standard heart symbol. I looked at him and said, “If you think the heart looks like that we’ve got issues”. Got a great laugh and we’ve been good since.

I should note that when my heart condition was first diagnosed, I was sent to my cardiologist and got a next day appointment. Because I need to know who I’m working with, I investigated him and discovered he was considered one of the best in a wide area.

My first question was, “What the fuck is going on that I got a next day appointment with this guy?”

But with a special pacemaker I’ve been good. Doc is great.
