Ask questions when hiring a specialist to avoid dangerous misunderstandings.

How do you wind up any kind of specialist when this incredibly stupid? We need better gatekeepers.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — A poison specialist and former medical resident at Mayo Clinic in Minnesota is charged with fatally poisoning his wife, a 32-year-old pharmacist who died days after she went to a hospital in August with stomach distress.

Authorities say Connor Bowman, 30, tried to stop the autopsy on his wife, Betty Bowman — arguing she should be cremated immediately and claiming she had a rare illness, which hospital tests did not confirm. The medical examiner’s office halted the order for cremation, citing suspicious circumstances, according to a criminal complaint, and an autopsy showed Betty Bowman died from toxic effects of colchicine, a medicine used to treat gout.

Medical records indicate she was not diagnosed with gout and had not been prescribed the medicine, the complaint states, adding that Connor Bowman had been researching the drug prior to his wife’s death. Six days before she was hospitalized, he had also converted his wife’s weight to kilograms and multiplied that by 0.8 — with 0.8 mg/kg considered to be the lethal dosage rate for colchicine, according to the complaint.

Harvested a couple pounds of shiitakes. Most will go to the dehydrator, but I held out a few.

Browned a half pound of sweet Italian sausage, sauteed some sliced and chopped shiitakes, tossed in a can of rinsed chickpeas, a can of condensed cream of mushroom soup, some farfelle pasta, and a bunch of grated parmesan/romano cheese. Some broccoli florets wouldn’t have gone amiss but, alas, the veggie drawer was bare.

Got everything simmering and it smells great!

Also, he’s not very good at this:

Investigators found that Connor Bowman had searched “internet browsing history: can it be used in court?” and “delete amazon data police” on Aug. 5. He did calculations that match the lethal dosage rate for colchicine on Aug. 10.

The Minnesota Department of Health found colchicine in Betty Bowman’s blood and urine samples that were taken at the hospital, and the medical examiner determined the cause of death to be toxic effects of colchicine, the complaint says.

One woman told investigators that the Bowmans had been talking about divorce, and another told authorities that Connor Bowman said he was going to get $500,000 in life insurance from his wife’s death, the complaint says. Authorities found a receipt for a $450,000 bank deposit inside his home.

According to the LAPD, the man threatened to kill them because he claimed they were Israeli. The family has not confirmed their nationality, but they are Jewish.

The family’s home had Mezuzahs on the door.

Upon his arrest, the man shouted, “Free Palestine.”

The family remains physically unharmed.

A source of mine, who lives near the family, heard the man shouting other threats.

Once I can confirm this information, I will share it.

Mr. C. and I are ready to buy an EV. We had stopped in at a dealership near our daughter’s house and found one we liked (we’d prefer a different color, but it’s a 2023 model so we’re hoping for a deal.) So far, so good. Our questions were answered, communication has been fine, but they’re 70 miles away from us so we are communicating by email at this point. I emailed this morning to inquire as to the out-the-door price they were hoping for, and…crickets. I’ll check back with them once more in an hour or so, because emails can go astray, but after that, well, if they don’t want to sell cars I guess that’s their lookout. But it is odd.

silverdolphin  Oct 25, 2023 • 2:47:49pm

Maybe I missed it but there is one important event dealing with Trump today that will have big implications, IMHO. IANAL but I think he screwed up ANY appeal he might have for this case succeeding.

He was put on the stand under oath. This was something his lawyers were never going to do, because he would lie.

But, because of the gag order violation, the judge could now put Trump on the stand and put him under oath. He asked him the question, Trump lied and the Judge, as the trier of fact, stated that Trump was not credible. That is now a fact in the court record.

I think this will be important for ANY appeal that Trump tries. The whole case is about Trump lying. But now the trial record will have evidence from his own lips that he lied. The appeals court will have this to balance any motions Trump tries to make. So Trump tries to say the Judge was biased (something subjective) while the court record shows that, as determined by the trier of fact, that Trump was a liar (something now objective that they can determine themselves).

Trump and his lawyers likely got outmaneuvered.

They’re probably thinking that the transportation department shouldn’t be making healthcare decisions.

It’s literally in the DOT mandate:

To deliver the world’s leading transportation system, serving the American people and economy through the safe, efficient, sustainable, and equitable movement of people and goods.

A transportation system that deliberately spreads disease isn’t safe. We let them regulate every other kind of statistical risk involving transportation including the health and safety of passengers so there’s no rational reason that common sense rules regarding epidemiology should be off the table.

Yes, the judge put him on the stand where he lied about disparaging the clerk, and continued to disparage the clerk:

“I think she’s very biased against us,” Trump said. “I think that we’ve made that very clear.”

The judge then stated that, as the trier of fact, Trump was not a credible witness. SO, in a court of law, for the first time, Trump has been determined to be a liar. This will now bew part of any appeal of the case. This could well be bigger than the fine.

A court found Trump to be a liar. He stormed out of the courtroom today, so fast the SS could not keep up. I imagine that when this case is dramatized in a decade or so, his response will look something like this (not this switiching juries part but the response).

From what I have heard, the clerk in the NY courts is actually quite powerful, requiring respect equivalent to the judge. They are more than just admins. Lawyers who understand know not to piss off the Clerk. They are apparently almost as important to a case as the judge. SO it might be relevant in an appeal in NY which is why I expect Trump has been going after her as well as the judge.

But they overplayed their hand today. Trump was forced onto the stand, put under oath, lied under oath regarding his comments and determioned by the trier of fact, the judge, that he was not a credible witness (ie a liar).

That is now part of the court proceedings and will go along with any appeal. The court determined that Trump is a liar.

I agree. But, to my mind he overplayed it in front of the judge, creating a legal determination that he is a liar. That is now a path any court can take, along with the gag order. Force him on the stand and have him lie again under oath. Put it in the record to balance any appeal attempt.

The egos of judges are such that they do not like being lied to, including appeals judges. I think his downfall, as we are seeing, will actually be our legal system and the rule of law, even as corrupted as they have made it. (The latest revelations of Thomas’ corruption as an example.)

Yes, Johnson, as a ‘constitutional lawyer’ tried to provide legal underpinning for not coutning the EC ballots. It convinced 147 of the GOP to try and overthrow the government, likely more as useful idiots than traitors. But still.

The coup is still ongoing. If he still has the gavel asfter the next election, we will likely see President Trump no matter what the votes say.

I know how Pittsburgh’s station has really downgraded Amtrak. Memories of how mighty Penn Station bustled when I was a kid.

Last I was there around last Christmas they were doing some construction work. Couldn’t see what it was through the tarp hanging everywhere, but they were doing something.

I was through there a few years ago making connections to Chicago and onto Albuquerque. Was meeting friends at a bar during the layover between trains and thus wasn’t paying real close attention beyond the fact stuff was being worked on.

My youngest son loves Amtrak. I just wish there was a closer terminal than having to run down to Pittsburgh to pick him up when he comes up from DC.

In 1986, I took Amtrak from Philadelphia to Pittsburgh. Via Washington DC. There was a track outage on the usual route, and I had the option of a bus to Pittsburgh, or a train ride to Pittsburgh in the shape of a ‘V’, with DC at the point.

I was in Philadelphia for a few minutes, having driven there to deliver the car that Mr. w and I had driven from Oregon to begin our cross-country bike trip in Sharon, PA. I don’t know if people still do ‘driveaway cars’ for long distance transport of their vehicles, but it worked well for us. I delivered the car to a medical student who drove me to the train station in time to pick a line for the train or the bus. The train meant that my ride from Pittsburgh to Sharon came at 3 AM. And a very scenic train ride through states I had never been in before.

Are people still saying stop overreacting?

In truth, there can never by overreacting when trying to protect our democracy. We just need to keep our actions in perspective. It will become clearer as we get closer but at the moment, I do not think the MAGA Republicans are organized enough to be the Christo-fascist party running our country as a totalitarian state (Hell, I think Democrats could do a better job at that if they had to ;-). A dictatorship requires a much greater ability to govern, even with an Iron Fist, than they have shown the ability to accomplish.

The British, the South, the Axis all made terrible mistakes that led to their failure. The MAGA-GOP will (has) also. This arises from the poor metaphors and paradigms they use to deal with the modern world. They have a much more deficient understanding of the world than those who will succeed. Poor understanding results in collapse. The Aztecs made a terrible mistake that destroyed their culture. If they had just killed all of Cortez’ men, things would have been different. The people of Easter Island lost the ability to trade with other islands because they cut down the last tree to roll huge stone heads on, preventing them from constructiong new boats.

The MAGA way is simply not sustainable in the world today. It cannot contain the huge economy created by IT that specifically works against them (diverse, collaborative groups from around the world empowered to work together virtually wrt time, place, racial background, sex, gender, religion, income level or color of their hair.) The Dems and liberals do have a culture that sustains exactly the things that create a huge benefit in an IT economy. We will win.

I just do not know when. SO it is still likely that many people will still die before the victory. It is bad enough that over 1 million died due the MAGA approach to disease. We may still lose more.

So, while we will win in the end, we still need to react and overreact to all of their perditious attempts to turn back the tide of history.

Now Republicans will want schools built 40 miles away from town to keep this from happening.

Wish it could happen. But, well, until streets are better constructed for bikes, it will be tough. Growing up in Texas, the only way to ride was through lightly traveled neighboor hood streets, even though the schools were often off of major streets, usually necessitating riden ‘off peste’ somewhere to get to school. Usually either muddy or rutted to the point of dangerous. Or chance the side of a major, high traveled road.

And not to mention the heat. Few would like to arrive at schools sweating like a pig. But that is what happens in Texas.

The Aztecs made a terrible mistake that destroyed their culture. If they had just killed all of Cortez’ men, things would have been different.

pastwatch - the redemption of christopher columbus by Orson Scott Card is a time travel story that runs with that hypothesis.

First they send a traveler to Central America in the early 1400’s with a bio-engineered super-contagious virus that gives people a mild illness and after recovery they’re immune to smallpox, scarlet fever and several other European diseases that caused mass death amongst the indigenous of the western hemisphere. Gets the Aztecs to then, not kill all of Cortez’ men, just burn their ships and take them hostage. Learn Spanish, learn how to make gunpowder and guns and cannon, learn everything they could about Spain…

the story ends with a combined Aztec/Inca fleet appearing just off the coast of Iberia, looking for diplomacy and trade if possible, or war if need be…

Interesting idea. And they should have bred the horses like crazy. Not only did mesoAmerica have pretty big civilizations, but it is looking like there were huge cities along the Mississippi that would have been a problem if they had not succumbed to disease. How can these dipshits call themselves “prophets” when everything they “predict” turns out to be fake? Obviously they have never read what scripture says should be done to “false prophets.” Or maybe they even do know that scripture but rely on their marks not knowing.

Because nine times outta ten, they use the same excuse that is used to explain everything from the existence of the fossil record being far older than 6000 years, celestial bodies way older than that, and any of a number of basic facts that do not comport with their fantasy book: “The Devil did it!” Just tell the rubes that a mythical boogeyman who is always trying to fuck with them to destroy their “faith” is at fault and they’ll blindly nod and follow along without too many questions.

Christian “prophets” always offer the same argument when their “predictions” fail to pan out: “I was given this prophecy by ‘God’ and told to convey it to his people, but then the Devil came behind me and fucked with the prediction to make you question your faith in ‘His’ works. You’re not gonna let the Devil succeed by questioning me, ARE YOU?!”

I’ll be honest, I’ve never understood the logic behind this “If we don’t make them ‘celebrities,’ then it will discourage copy cats from trying to emulate them.” The evidence that mass shootings are inspired by a desire for “fame” seems scarce at best.

I was about to say that I’m not discounting that there are those for whom “martyrdom” seems to be part of the thought process, but the key component of martyrdom is usually being killed by others rather than blowing your own brains out to avoid prison. And it certainly doesn’t seem to be a factor in the number of pasty white guys who get captured alive and whose trials seem to be less a public spectacle and more buried on page A16.

There are definitely some who, by leaving behind videos or manifestos, have been elevated to mythic status within their respective anti-social subcultures, inspiring copycats like Elliot Rodgers, Anders Breivik, etc. It makes sense to treat these people like the mis-folded proteins that cause prion disease, keeping their ability to warp and change others to a minimum. It’s how we do this that matters, as long as it’s a voluntary press blackout and generally making it difficult for people without a legitimate occupational need-to-know access the media these shooters intentionally create I’m fine with it.
