Shiplord Kirel: From behind wingnut lines  Oct 27, 2023 • 2:15:11pm

At least 40 years overdue but we are finally getting somewhere.
Time to Get Serious About Unleaded Fuel

The general aviation industry expected last week’s release from the Environmental Protection Agency of the endangerment finding on leaded avgas. Thanks to a number of factors—including recent codification of leaded fuel reduction plans under the EAGLE (Eliminate Aviation Gas Lead Emissions) coalition—it feels like the finding was welcomed rather than feared.

Because of the way the U.S. government operates, particularly under the Clean Air Act of 1970, certain processes within the associated agencies, including the FAA, could not begin without the finding.

Endangerment finding:
EPA Determines that Lead Emissions from Aircraft Engines Cause or Contribute to Air Pollution
Btw, I am still grounded but my ophthomologist and I are very optimistic that I can get back to flying when my cataract surgery is done.

“…American officials attribute the attacks to Iranian proxy groups operating in the region. Iran backs both Hamas, which controls Gaza, and Hezbollah, which operates in Lebanon, with arms as well as money.

“These Iranian-backed attacks against US forces are unacceptable and must stop,” Mr Austin said.

“If attacks by Iran’s proxies against US forces continue, we will not hesitate to take further necessary measures to protect our people.”

Carmax texted me Tuesday saying the car had arrived, but they had to do some work to bring it up to their standards. It’s ready today. I do not know what was wrong that took so long, and it’s weird that another Carmax would ship a car that has problems.

I’ll head out there in the morning for a test drive and likely purchase. I’ll ask what they corrected, but don’t really trust them to tell me.

This is all being seen as warmongering Biden escalating the unrest in the Middle East

But if he had not done it, it would be spun as Biden being a weakling and not standing up to Iran.

You might consider the extended warranty. Got that for my wife’s Volvo SUV - and it came in handy when the alarm system had an issue three years in. Probably should have been a recall by the manufacturer, but at least it only cost us the $50 deductible (out of a potential $1,000-plus repair). And the work was done at the nearby Volvo dealership. So the warranty has pretty much paid for itself.

my experience selling a car with carmax was basically a guy taking some photos around the vehicle and then asking “does it run?” before putting it on the back of the truck. That was the most glorious buying experience I’d ever had for a car. I paid so little for that vehicle that when some ditzoid college kid totalled it, insurance paid out more two years later than I’d paid for it new.

A story that seems relevant to the protests at NYU in New York (not at Cooper Union, though):

I was in line at the cafeteria at work and the kid in front of me was talking to the man in front of him. The kid was about 20, interning at my company, and I’m going to stick with calling him a kid in this case. The man is a Australian in their Air Force (we have an actual US Air Force division on site and people from other Five Eyes countries). They were discussing temps and the kid had never realized that Australian weather was opposite ours. He said, thinking about it, that it made sense, but having grown up in Texas, he hadn’t thought out it that hard because he hadn’t really needed to before.

I generally think you only yell at the sky that you want to meet an alien when you’re on quality drugs, and that this kind of thing is obviously a drug experience, but if I were sneaking around, a young Goldie Hawn looking for me would definitely bring me out into the open.

Goldie Hawn has claimed that an alien once touched her face, revealing that it ‘felt like the finger of God.’

The Oscar winning actress, 77, spoke out about the extraterrestrial encounter during a recent appearance on Apple Fitness+’s audio show Time to Walk in which she detailed her long-time desire to come face-to-face with an alien, a wish that she says was granted more than five decades ago.

She recalled how bizarre creatures with ‘triangle-shaped heads,’ no ears, and a ‘slash for a mouth’ surrounded her while she was preparing to take a nap in a friends’ car - after she yelled up to the sky that she wanted to meet an alien.

According to the star, the incident occurred roughly 50 years ago, when she was in her 20s and working as a dancer in California.

I don’t see how the IDF can ever “eradicate” Hamas. A ground invasion seems like a bad idea to me, and I hope the Biden admin has been trying to slow this shit down before the bloodbath gets even worse. I don’t see what the clear goal of such an invasion could possibly be; the price in terms of casualties on both sides would be very high.

More to the point, they might decapitate the current Hamas infestation, but in so doing, they’re going to create a new generation of Hamas fighters who don’t remember anything but IDF boots bashing in doors in the dark of night. This is how the cycle perpetuates. Not that I have any answers, nor do I begrudge the Israelis the need to defend themselves. This shit sucks, man.

No to mention the lead scavengers in leaded AvGas! For comparison, Benzene is a carcinogen and causes neural tube dents in fetuses which can result in anencephaly (no forebrain development and has a drinking water maximum of 5 parts per billion. Take a look at EDB (ethylene dibromide):

EPA rules

Both of these lead scavengers have federal Maximum Concentration Limits (MCLs) in drinking water; for EDB the MCL is 0.05 parts per billion (ppb), and for 1,2-DCA it is 5.0 ppb.

Not unheard of in naval warfare. Mines are a hazard and once laid and activated they are pretty much no one’s friend. And it being water they can and will break free and move about and thus might turn up in unexpected places. The Russians should be sweeping their access channels periodically (if not daily) simply as a precaution.

Given the population density, you are not wrong.

Even if you get the civilians out it will be very bad. Demolition work is pretty standard since doors and other entrances are easy to cover and/or trap. And a lot of the fighting will be close range and casualty heavy since urban areas don’t facilitate the use of the IDF’s heavy weapons like tanks, artillery, etc.

And Hamas doesn’t want the civilians to get out.

It’s no longer a ‘rational’ war. There’s an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Rational people try not to get into wars.

It’s now about inflicting enough pain on ‘the other side’ (a loose abstraction that allows the believer to do what they want to who they want when they want) to ‘make them quit’.

The rational thing to do is to change the circumstances that lead to violence. However since ‘humans are not thinking machines that feel but rather feeling machines that think’ such rational action is a long, long ways away.

The high point of my youth was standing atop Cemetery Ridge in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, on July 5, staring out over the open field over which Maj. Gen. Pickett and his ill-fated men marched all those years (and two days) ago.

Hope to do that some day. My father and brother walked the battlefield a few years ago.

One of the things I found out recently answers one of my big questions I had for so long. known that Lee ordered the largest cannonade in N. American history before the charge. But it did little damage, because so many of the shells overshot (although it did almost hit Meade). How could they have been so wrong?

Turns out they were using a lot of fused shells because they were shooting at an elevated position. The fuses were timed to explode the shell above the Union soldiers, raining deadly sharpnel down unto them.

But, the main production foundry for the fuses had been shut down due to a fire so the Rebels were using new fuses from another plant. Turns out that those fuses burnt long, not exploding the shells until well past the hill.

Then all the smoke (windless day) prevented them from really seeing how badly the cannonade failed. Coupled with the brilliant strategy of the Union Artillery chief to slowly stop returning fire, making it seem the Union was running out of functional cannons, Lee, Longstreet and all those in the charge really thought they had destroyed the Union position. They likely would have. If they had the proper fuses.

They were decimated. Not only from the cannons on the ridge, and the crossfire from the side, but, something else my father told me after visiting, also from Parott rifled cannons from Little Round Top. These cannons fired a shell a mile and a half that did not really slow down and could bounce a long way through the lines. The shells could not be seen before they destroyed tens of men from their right side. The 2 guns from Little Round top did so much damage that Longstreet thought there were several cannon brigades firing from the hill instead of only 2 cannons.

This is why I think that Little Round Top was so important (even though some disagree). If the South had been able to put artillery up those spots they would have been able to run shells right up the Union line. Even overshooting would have done a lot of damage.

Such an amzing battle.

re: #129 silverdolphin

All important, yes. But to me the single most important thing happened on the first day when Buford fought his delaying action. That classic example of Dragoon tactics bought Meade time to get the high ground. The rest of the battle fell into place from there.

Almost as important was on the last day when the Union cavalry actually, finally, stopped Stuart on the battlefield. Preventing him from turning the northern flank probably didn’t save the battle but it prevented needless casualties and gave the ANV an additional black eye.

132
Nerdy Fish  Oct 27, 2023 • 7:34:33pm

re: #131 William Lewis

The first day’s action was absolutely critical. The exhausted Union troopers, finally yielding the town to the Rebels, falling back to Cemetery Ridge (as planned) and seeing the muskets of the Union infantry advancing to meet them had to be the most welcome sight.

Sarah Sanders mocked for ‘I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I’ meltdown at press

Awwwww Smoky Eyes has a sads…

Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders (R-AR) has spent weeks dogged by questions from reporters and even lawmakers in her own party about the suspicious use of state funds to purchase a $19,000 lectern that no one seems able to locate — and when asked about it at a news conference about a new missile factory in the state, she lost it at the press.

Her conduct was roundly mocked by Austin Bailey in an editorial for the Arkansas Times Friday.

“A new $33 million facility will create 30 new jobs to crank out missiles for Israel’s Iron Dome and a similar U.S. system, the SkyHunter® missile. The first batch won’t roll off conveyor belts until 2025, but that didn’t stop Sanders and the defense contractors from throwing a huzzah to Israel and yawping Arkansas’s hawkish swagger,” wrote Bailey. “‘We don’t shy away from being America’s arsenal,’ Sanders said. ‘We’re not bashful about building the aircraft and weapons that are necessary to keep America safe.’”

When reporters asked her about “Lecterngate,” however, she reacted angrily. “At this point, I think you guys [the media] are at a decision point. I’m not trying to be rude, but I think you have to decide whether you want to be actual journalists or whether you want to chase tabloid gossip,” said Sanders. “Right now, our focus is on actually building up industry and focusing on bringing jobs in and doing things that matter and help Arkansans while the press continues to chase down rabbit holes and go down ridiculous stories from people who are frankly just left-wing activists.”

“Here, we see the classic I-know-you-are-but-what-am-I maneuver, aka ‘I’m rubber, you’re glue,’” wrote Bailey. “It’s a shockingly effective method, perhaps even more so for adults than for children. Proud of the misplaced burn attempt on Arkansas media’s straight man, Sanders’ cranky comms chief, Alexa Henning, took to social media to lob a flame emoji.”

Ultimately, concluded Bailey, “after her frontal assault on Arkansas’s beloved Freedom of Information Act, a move that disgusted conservatives and progressives alike, maybe she needs a few years to regain ground … Sanders’ efforts to boost her sagging poll numbers don’t seem to be panning out.”

Chamberlain’s POWs

Berenger did a good job. I kinda thought Sheen was a little miscast. Richard Jordan represwenting Armistead and the high water mark was well done.

Yes, Lee honorably:

- Betrayed his oath by choosing to support an insurrectionist movement in violation of the Constitution

- Betrayed his uniform by leaving the Union Army to become a leader in the rebel military

- Betrayed his Commander in Chief by rejecting a request to lead the Union Army in favor of maintaining “loyalty” to his state

- And betrayed his nation by leading said rebel military in a ruinous armed insurrection that lead to the deaths hundreds of thousands of his fellow Americans.

In any other nation, he would have spent the rest of his days either in a jail cell or awaiting execution.

If I visit Alaska in the future and Cheechako’s Titty Bar and Prayer Palace is an actual thing, I will, umm, avoid anything with that level of stupid, unless the drinks are free.

At least get the souvenir tattoo while you’re there.

Same here. Ray Hubbard was 4 feet down for the year, and would have been worse had Lavon not been feeding it. My wife just sent me this of the rainfall totals in the area over the last couple of days:

Heath, in the top right, is just south of Rockwall.

Lake Travis is down 50’, and the latest rain event may add 1.5 to 2 feet.

We are way behind historical levels.

re: #131 William Lewis

All important, yes. But to me the single most important thing happened on the first day when Buford fought his delaying action. That classic example of Dragoon tactics bought Meade time to get the high ground. The rest of the battle fell into place from there.

Almost as important was on the last day when the Union cavalry actually, finally, stopped Stuart on the battlefield. Preventing him from turning the northern flank probably didn’t save the battle but it prevented needless casualties and gave the ANV an additional black eye.

Gotta credit George Armstrong Custer for deflecting J.E.B Stuart’s Calvary from the Union Army’s flank.

Then you might want to avoid the Flora-Bama Bar & Church on the Florida -Alabama Line.
