Timo Andres Plays Philip Glass: Tiny Desk Concert

Music • Views: 11,972

It’s a longstanding tradition for musicians to leave a small something-or-other on the thoroughly disorganized wall of “stuff” that backdrops our Tiny Desk. My favorite is the Johann Sebastian Bach bobblehead.

But now, move over Bach. Here comes Philip Glass.

When Timo Andres arrived at our office to play a pair of etudes by Philip Glass, the director of Glass’ publishing house, Adrienne White, tagged along and generously donated the only remaining Philip Glass bobblehead to NPR — an appropriate gesture to mark the composer’s 87th birthday on Jan. 31.

The wiggly statue depicts Glass standing at one of his trusty Farfisa organs, an instrument associated with the early days of his career when he played intricate patterns over and over in his SoHo loft, as fans and fellow musicians, like Laurie Anderson, laid on the floor and let the music wash over them.

Much of Glass’ music can have that transforming, mesmerizing effect, including these two etudes. They are opposite twins from a set of 20, pieces Glass wrote over a two-decade span, beginning in the early 1990s. Andres knows the music intimately — he helped edit and design a gorgeous new folio facsimile of the sheet music.

With Etude No. 6, Andres combines sewing machine precision with a deep feeling for Glass’ melodies, stitching together delicate arpeggios and thundering chords. Etude No. 5 is, by contrast, a meditation in slow motion. A see-sawing rhythmic idea sets the foundation for a journey wherein time seems to stand almost still while the spaces between the notes speak volumes.

I went down a rabbit hole that went through a wormhole, and found this movie:

Fury of the Fist and the Golden Fleece

The biggest porn star of the 1970s must reclaim his mojo in the ’80s by saving all male kind, fighting his way to the heart of a conspiracy to sell meat pumped full of estrogen to emasculate men.

Tweet this morning from Jonathan Turley:
“The Hill is out with my column in a recent discovery of the criminal history of the great-great-grandfather of Joe Biden. It turns out that the evasion of accountability may be something of a family trait acquired through generations of natural selection.”

Has this man ever displayed any honesty or has he always been a lying POS?

To answer your question(s): no, and yes…..

And off-the-mark as well (as usual): rather than “evading accountability”, Moses Robinette was properly tried, convicted and imprisoned for his actions: that President Lincoln pardoned him is irrelevant to that fact.
Not that Turley seems to care much about facts….

Dr. Seuss couldn’t dream this stuff up.

Forests of ancient corals. Clusters of undersea urchins with cactus-like spikes, as if a desert had been inundated. Gardens of glassy sponges, clinging to the slopes of an underwater mountain range soaring up thousands of feet from the seafloor.

Deep-sea explorers searching below the waves off the coast of Chile may have found more than 100 species completely new to science.

Honestly, the images they share are amazing. Imagine a pink translucent walking fish, with a pink crocheted cover!

They are fine with IVF treatments, so long as they are done in a more expensive and less effective manner to ensure that no embryo is left behind. The “one embryo at a time” method ensures more failed attempts at pregnancies at higher cost, in an already expensive process.

I remember that about 4-5 years ago there were a bunch of people in Germany who’s country codes were being re-assigned by Google to places like Malaysia or Thailand. They were very displeased because the privacy laws in EU and Germany were so much better. And there was also the slight matter that they were physically present in German and had never visited the country to which they were being re-assigned.

One of them mentioned that folks could appeal at:
policies.google[dot]com/country-association-form?authuser

I never did hear of the results of their appeal. And there was also the issue of whether Google would ever respond. And if so, under whose laws the response would conform.

Internet slams Lindsey Graham for false claim about GOP and fertility clinics

Graham, who has recently been accused of flip-flopping for former president Donald Trump when it comes to aid to Ukraine, might be making a similar move when it comes to controversial fertility treatments that some Republicans have actively opposed for years. The shift follows actions taken by the Alabama Supreme Court, which concluded that embryos used in certain treatments are actually humans, which could open up potential parents and medical professionals to serious litigation.

Graham Saturday pointed to a comment by Hillary Clinton, who recently warned that the GOP would try to take away birth control next.

“The last thing Republicans will do is shut down fertility clinics and limit access to legal birth control,” he wrote. “[Clinton], your latest attacks are BS and they are not going to work.”

Graham also included a video in which he reiterates those same positions on Fox News.

Columnist Molly Jong-Fast had a simple response: “Ummm,” she wrote. She also included screenshots of multiple elected Republicans coming out in favor of fertility clinics despite having voted for legislation that would essentially ban the medical practice entirely as we know it.

Progressive journalist Brian Tyler Cohen posted about Graham’s claim, too, saying, “Republicans just shut down several IVF clinics in Alabama after the 100% Republican Alabama Supreme Court ruled that embryos are children.”

Legal scholar Norman Ornstein took notice of that post, adding that “Lindsey keeps sinking to a new low.”

Investigative journalist Victoria Brownworth was stunned by Graham’s latest remarks.

“Is Lindsey Graham in a news blackout? Alabama just did this,” she wrote on social media Saturday.

That would be the cynical, pragmatic play imho…. stay in because despite the media attempt to blow smoke up all of our collective asses, Trump is going to be convicted of instigating an insurrection and illegally retaining secret documents.

Now if the GOP STILL insists on running him, that’s fine. If SCOTUS wants to allow it, then we can go ahead an have a Constitutional crisis and get it over with. If they replace DJT on the ticket with his VP selection, again, that’s their call. Considering the GOP penchant for lawbreaking and giving the finger to precedent and established norms, who’s to say what is and isn’t a bridge too far… yet if they want to retreat back into norms post Trump, then Haley is making a good faith effort. Naturally, she’s a complete mess, but unsure if she has the fortitude to go full fascist if somehow she wins the office.

They are fine with IVF treatments, so long as they are done in a more expensive and less effective manner to ensure that no embryo is left behind. The “one embryo at a time” method ensures more failed attempts at pregnancies at higher cost, in an already expensive process.

There are deeply unserious people (aka WHACKJOBS) who believe that ALL the embryos created have to be implanted. Even embryos that are genetically defective or pretty much guaranteed not to succeed. The woman has to experience miscarriage and the she can try again. Of course, if the embryo is genetically defective but manages to implant and grow, she has to carry it to term and watch it die (as the vast, vast majority do).

This is what happens when you believe a fertilized ova has more right to life than anyone else out there.

Foundation is shaking things up ahead of its next chapter.

Series co-creator David S. Goyer is stepping down as showrunner amid clashes over budgets, according to our sister site The Hollywood Reporter. Executive producer Bill Bost will reportedly step up to oversee Season 3 of the Apple TV+ sci-fi series, though Goyer will still contribute scripts to the upcoming episodes.

TVLine has reached out to Apple for comment.

Foundation initially began production on its third season in 2023, then paused amid last year’s dual Hollywood strikes. Production was set to resume earlier this month, but was then delayed a second time due to “issues with budgeting and physical production,” per our sister site Deadline. Production is now reportedly set to resume on March 6.

and

At a 2014 political event Steel recounted that she had withdrawn her younger daughter from the University of California, Santa Cruz after her daughter voiced support for same-sex marriage and President Barack Obama. re: #155 No Malarkey!

Trump ranting about immigrants

People act like Trump’s appeal is a mystery, or it’s based on economic anxiety or being “forgotten” in coal towns or whatever, but that’s nonsense. Trump is a racist, he says other countries are shitholes, and the who come from them are dirty criminals, and Republican voters nod their heads in agreement.

There’s no explanation for that aside from the obvious conclusion that they are bigots and he speaks for them.

re: #168 BeachDem

My county? 70,000+ votes today; Dem primary? @7,500. Sad.

What would your demographics predict?

re: #171 Orange Impostor

Steven Miller will be one of the architects of Trump’s purge, so I think he will probably be safe.

Ernst Rohm probably thought he was safe too, at one point.

He is indeed.
Johnny Mathis tour dates 2024

Johnny is now 88 years old

My dad called him the REAL African Queen (he was heavily into jazz in the 50’s and 60’s).

With all of the usual gay baiting by straight cis men that implied.
