I keep thinking of those scenes from Better Call Saul where he comes up with ridiculous & contrived ways to keep his client from being evicted: planting fake artefacts, strewing radioactive bits recovered from fire detectors, changing the mailbox number, etc: anything to buy time while other people pulled strings for him in the background.

Except we were all rooting for him…

Siege in New Jersey after US gunman kills three in Pennsylvania

A suspected gunman in a series of deadly shootings in Pennsylvania has barricaded himself inside a home in neighbouring New Jersey, police said.

US police said the suspect shot three people dead in Falls Township on Saturday before fleeing across state lines to the home in nearby Trenton.

Residents were home when the suspect entered the house but they have since been safely evacuated, police added.

The suspect is believed to be a 26-year-old who was known to the victims.

The Bucks County District Attorney’s Office in Philadelphia said that following the shootings, the suspect carjacked an individual at a dollar store before making his way to the home in Trenton, where he has barricaded himself.

Dramatic images captured the police response to the siege in Trenton, and appeared to show hostages climbing out a first floor window before being cared for by police.

The weapon used by the suspect is believed to be an AR-15-style assault rifle, officials told a news conference in Falls Township.

People related to the suspect are also understood to be among the victims in Falls Township, officials added.

I think we just need more people with more guns, that would solve that kind of thing wouldn’t it? More guns solve all shootings. If the officer had been armed that wouldn’t have happened. There are 2 kind of people, armed and victim (I just saw that sticker on the rear cab window of a pickup yesterday).

Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s consideration of New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers as his running mate is sparking backlash and raising fresh scrutiny over the athlete’s past controversial comments.

Rodgers is one of a few candidates that the independent candidate’s campaign confirmed is on its shortlist for vice president ahead of an announcement set for later this month.

If chosen, Rodgers would be a high-profile name for Kennedy’s ticket as he tries to gain steam for his independent bid. But while strategists from both sides of the aisle said a pick like Rodgers may help Kennedy get more of the attention he desires for his candidacy, it could also plague him with controversy amid scrutiny over the future Pro Football Hall of Famer’s past statements on the Sandy Hook shooting and vaccines.

Oracle this week warned that the macOS 14.4 update released earlier this month for Macs can cause Java processes to “terminate unexpectedly.”

In a blog post on Friday, Oracle’s Senior Director of Product Management Aurelio Garcia-Ribeyro recommended that Apple silicon Mac users who rely on Java avoid updating to macOS 14.4 until the issue is resolved by Apple:

An issue introduced by macOS 14.4, which causes Java process[es] to terminate unexpectedly, is affecting all Java versions from Java 8 to the early access builds of JDK 22. There is no workaround available, and since there is no easy way to revert a macOS update, affected users might be unable to return to a stable configuration unless they have a complete backup of their systems prior to the OS update.

The blog post and bug report include more technical details about the issue.

bugs.java.com

Oracle says it has notified Apple about the issue. Apple did not immediately respond to our request for comment about the matter.

Update: macOS 14.4 also has compatibility issues with audio plugins protected by PACE/iLok.

re: #88 Teukka

It’s a very new SSBN if the details are correct, working up before its first deployment. One of the final exercises of such a workup usually involves firing at least one missile, to ensure the boat’s raison d’etre actually works and to give the crew experience in that particular operation. One of the Royal Navy’s own SSBNs was on such a workup deployment recently after a long mid-life refit. The test-fire of a Trident D5 missile did not go to plan but it did not hang up in the launch tube.

If the Russians were going to test-fire a ballistic missile I’d expect the other major nuclear powers to have been informed since only finding out about the launch when your satellite surveillance systems detect such a start-a-nuclear-war event is, ah, contraindicated.

Mmm. But given how the Kursk went down back in the day, it makes the whole thing inconclusive, but not implausible.

Yup. The three-stage MIRV it carries is a problem child, per wiki.

Or they decide to go without warning, playing chicken daring others to make a move, so it can be used as a narrative “they attacked us first”. Heck, in that scenario, the crew might’ve hidden mutiny because of what they were asked to do behind an “accident”.

That’s how things work out in a Hollywood movie script but the Big Boys have been playing this game for over sixty years now (we will pretend that Fatball in North Korea does not exist for the purposes of this discussion). After that crazy fucker JFK panicked and nearly started a nuclear war back in 1962 the relevant authorities have taken to keeping communication channels open regarding things nuclear. In the movie Doctor Strangelove the Soviet Doomsday Machine was going to be a surprise for the Party Secretary during the next big meeting, in the real world nobody likes surprises that much.

I meant as in, the crew reads the order, knows the consequences, and NOPE by arranging an accident. Not the spectre of an independent launch.

it could also plague him with controversy amid scrutiny over the future Pro Football Hall of Famer’s past statements on the Sandy Hook shooting and vaccines.

Um, Those past statements are why Junior chose him.

Herblock was such a voice for that time. Wish we had another such now! We have many good ones; we just need a great one.

You’ve got Mike Lukovich who is brilliant. I knew him when he was drawing ‘Toons the New Orleans Times Picayune/State Item. He was a 24 year old kid from the Pac NW who left for Atlanta in ‘89 and has been there ever since.
