Whew!!! So here I was thinking my unfortunate accident of yesterday (Recommendation: do not spill a glass of water on your laptop keyboard) did permanent damage to my computer. Everything I clicked opened up a new tab (or multiple tabs).

But a reboot magically eliminated the problems (for now anyway). Yay!!!

By the time of the 2028 election cycle AI will make the ITE into the determining factor: America will simply split into various realities, each based on our preconceived notions of what things should look like.

I really don’t know how we are going to govern ourselves after that…

From that wiki:

The illusory truth effect (also known as the illusion of truth effect, validity effect, truth effect, or the reiteration effect) is the tendency to believe false information to be correct after repeated exposure.

I like ‘reiteration effect’ as a more clear name for it. Truth is not in there.

I haven’t forgotten that Joe Scarborough was a large factor in the normalizing and promotion of Donald Trump before his election, long past the point where his extremism and bigotry were right in your face.

This is why you may have noticed I almost never show clips from his show. He’s a major symptom of the rot in much of the US media; and now MSNBC is hiring Ronna McDaniel, fresh from her job shilling shamelessly for Donald Trump, to give her “expert opinions.”

20
garzooma  Mar 23, 2024 • 11:49:08am

Regarding people who believe that Trump is being treated unfairly by the courts, The Atlantic has a relevant article Why Trump Won’t Stop Suing the Media and Losing:

[…]

Filing these suits has been costly for Trump—or rather, for donors to his campaign and affiliated political action committees, who have footed millions of dollars in legal fees. Not one of Trump’s media lawsuits has ever succeeded, nor is one ever likely to, given both the underlying facts and the towering bar a president or former president faces in proving defamation. […]

In particular:

So why does he keep doing it? On a basic level, this appears to be just Trump being Trump—peevish, headstrong, and narcissistic. For decades, his love-hate relationship with reporters has tended to flare into legal action, as it did in 2006 when he sued the writer Tim O’Brien over a few pages in a book that questioned Trump’s personal wealth. As Trump told me in an interview in 2016, he knew he couldn’t win that suit (he didn’t) but brought it anyway to score a few points. “I spent a couple of bucks on legal fees, and [O’Brien’s publisher] spent a whole lot more,” he said then. “I did it to make his life miserable, which I’m happy about.”

So why shouldn’t we also be happy about making Trump’s life miserable?

This is the purpose of anti-SLAPP legislation, because that perfectly describes what these are: Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation. As long as jurisdictions will let people sue for defamation, cost the defendant tens of thousands in legal fees, and then withdraw for a fraction of the cost, people like Trump will take advantage of it to punish their critics.

Joe was part of the Gingrich contract on America, and he became bitter and disillusioned but still wingnut afterwards. He got into the media rounds while he was pimping his book about his bitter debacle as a congress critter (to give him some credit he did quit congress as promised in his campaign pledges unlike others in that class).
They loved him at MSNBC because he was willing to speak ill of the “professional pol” wing of the GOP, sniping at them as a continuance of his book’s theme, and was part of tearing the “business moderates” out from their roots. He was especially angry at Bush over Katrina, so …

Impeachment Witness Demands Fox News Retraction and Apology

Fox News has dismissed a legal threat over an anchor’s statements on Biden impeachment witness Tony Bobulinski, Mediaite reports. On Thursday, Fox host Jessica Tarlov issued a clarification after she said that Bobulinski’s legal fees had been paid for by a Trump super PAC. “What was actually said during the hearing was that the law firm representing Mr. Bobulinski was paid by a Trump PAC,” she said in her correction. “I have seen no indication those payments were made in connection with Mr. Bobulinski’s legal fees and he denies that they were.” Tarlov was immediately hit with a request from Bobulinski’s lawyers, dissatisfied with the host’s clarification. “We demand a complete retraction and apology by Ms. Tarlov AT THE TOP OF TODAY’S SHOW,” the letter read. It included apologies for Tarlov to repeat “without the petulant innuendo or further attempted mental gymnastics.” In a letter obtained by Mediaite, Fox shrugged off the request, and said that Tarlov’s statement accurately portrayed that she did not know of any connection, and that they would not be issuing a retraction or an apology.

With ‘Tommy’ Revival, Pete Townshend Is Talking to a New Generation

He’s also still working through his childhood trauma. Considering his musical’s legacy, he sees a story about how “we prevail ultimately, by turning toward the light.”

… Bullying, sexual abuse — these were topics that prevailed in my peer group after the war. In London, there were still buildings that were smashed by German bombs. Adults were very damaged by the war, and the damage led to damaged children…

… It feels to me like there’s one thing the Who can do, and that’s a final tour where we play every territory in the world and then crawl off to die. I don’t get much of a buzz from performing with the Who. If I’m really honest, I’ve been touring for the money. My idea of an ordinary lifestyle is pretty elevated…

…I’ve got about 500 titles I might release online, mostly unfinished stuff. We’re not making Coca-Cola, where every can has to taste the same. And it’s turned out, surprise, surprise, that rock ‘n’ roll is really good at dealing with the difficulties of aging. Watching Keith Richards onstage, trying to do what he used to do — it’s disturbing, heart-rending, but also delightful…

…It’s different when you’re in a band. I used to watch Roger knock people out if he didn’t like what they said. It feels like a gang. We did a show for fans at Christmas one year, and I said, “You’re a bunch of [expletive].” And they all went, “Yay, Pete!” They like me to hate them…

Q: Do you envy Tommy?

“Envy a creature I’ve created? I don’t think of Tommy as anything more than a coat hanger on which to hang a whole series of ideas.”

Biden Hopes to Put Florida in Play

Biden lost Florida by a little over 3%. That means that if about 190K votes out of 11 million cast switched from Trump to Biden, he would have won the state. And the Dem advantage in special elections since Dobbs averages almost 10%. Also, the excess death rate from Covid amongst registered Republicans in Florida could remove several tens of thousands from the 2024 votes.

If Trump loses Florida, he cannot win.

Also, Rick Scott only won by 0.2% (10,000 votes out of 8 million). If Biden is able to win Florida it is also like we pick up a Senator. At the moment, the Democrat (Debbie Mucarsel-Powell ) and Scott are tied in the polls.

Finally, about 380,000 Venezuelan-Americans live in Florida. They have college educations at almost twice the rate of America as a whole and tend to be doing well financially. Biden has made special effors to help Venezuelans fleeing repression If he can leverage this group, they could really have a huge effect.

I think Biden is going to make a real play for Florida. Not only would it kill the GOP as a national party it holds hope for picking up a Senate seat. Biden surely has th money to try.

I have two neighbors who’ve moved there. The first one was a hardcore leftist who was (probably still is) a “Hillary stole the primary from Bernie” truther. He was big on talking about moving back to Canada because as he put it, he was sold a bag of lies about America. I can only imagine the amount of mental trauma he’s gone through since FL has been slowly morphing into Gilead.

The other is currently moving now. They should do fine. They’ve had some financial problems for a while related to housing and are big on blaming poor people taking mortgages for causing the 2008 crash. Pointing out that banks had no business giving anyone with a pulse mortgages in the first place falls on deaf ears.

Plus, the husband was big on “Just between us white guys” conversations. They’ll fit in fine.

It’s nice that one of our worst ex mayors could be sued for telling lies about the election because he slandered a company.

There is recourse for individuals & companies.

But “immigrants” can’t do anything about the damaging lies about them being violent.

Jewish people can’t do anything about the lies about them plotting to… end the west IDK I don’t even get that one.

Black people can’t do anything about being called cogently terrible plane pilots.

But the lies still cause harm.

Glad to see someone pointing out the discrepancy in how we handle lies that hurt people vs. lies that hurt profits.

Maybe we’ll see some attention paid to how abusing power in order to make money is illegal but abusing power to keep power (e.g. BridgeGate, strongarming Ukraine) isn’t. If Chris Christie’s minions had caused the traffic jams to get the Democratic mayors to make payments to them, they’d have been put in jail. Since they only wanted a political favor in the form of endorsements, there are no laws that apply. Similarly, if Trump had demanded that Zelensky put money in his Swiss bank account to get his weapons, Trump would have faced prosecution. But since he only wanted a political favor in the form of an investigation, there are no statutes.

Yes—to a point. In a state as balkanized as FL, State, Local, and Campaign will also trip over each other if they are not coordinated. Volunteering for Obama worked so well because the O campaign actually had paid workers in Alabama to train, certify, and direct border-crossers. (AlObama for Florida—still have the bumper sticker.) They made sure we were up to the tasks, and plugged us into local campaigns in Tampa, Gainesville, Panama City, and the Northern Tier counties.

re: #64 sagehen

I’m hardly a new generation; I’ve listened to that album well over 100 times, I’ve seen the movie 3 times, and on Tuesday I’m going to the Broadway show (supposedly still in previews, it opens officially on the 28th, but I’m sure it’s much the same).

I’ll let you know if it’s as good as I’m expecting; it got great reviews in Chicago before coming here to NYC.

I had read of Tommy’s release, but not heard any cuts as commercial FM radio had not yet discovered money in Rock and Roll.
So as I was driving back to college, i picked up the U of F station broadcasting Tommy while driving thru the Gainesville, FL area.
It was glorious.
(The music, not Gainesville)
