… And every night, I feel so tired
But I can’t sleep
Without you near, I close my eyes
And I wish you were here
… But I get by
I get by
So high
Gonna miss you like summer rain

Too much crap going on in this timeline. Decided to watch something distracting.

Deep Blue Sea. Such a great set of actors (Thomas Jane, LL Cool Jay, Samuel L Jackson, Michael; Rapaport, Stellan Skarsgard) in a fun B-movie of super intelligent sharks.

See you all later.

Colonoscopy update: it all went down (or rather up?) smoothly. “See you again in 10 years,” which is plenty.

Why am I not surprised at Faceborg decrypting and spying on SnapChat users…

(TechCrunch appears to be reasonably credible. It was owned by AOL, then Verizon before being sold to a financial investment group and integrated into (the new) Yahoo.)

TechCrunch: Facebook snooped on users’ Snapchat traffic in secret project, documents reveal

In 2016, Facebook launched a secret project designed to intercept and decrypt the network traffic between people using Snapchat’s app and its servers. The goal was to understand users’ behavior and help Facebook compete with Snapchat, according to newly unsealed court documents. Facebook called this “Project Ghostbusters,” in a clear reference to Snapchat’s ghost-like logo.

*snip*

The newly released documents reveal how Meta tried to gain a competitive advantage over its competitors, including Snapchat and later Amazon and YouTube, by analyzing the network traffic of how its users were interacting with Meta’s competitors. Given these apps’ use of encryption, Facebook needed to develop special technology to get around it.

*snip*

Facebook’s engineers solution was to use Onavo, a VPN-like service that Facebook acquired in 2013. In 2019, Facebook shut down Onavo after a TechCrunch investigation revealed that Facebook had been secretly paying teenagers to use Onavo so the company could access all of their web activity.

Tejano singer Selena singing the Norteño song “Si La Quieres”.
(Mexican Norteño Music - Think polkas and accordians.
What can I say? I’m from Pittsburgh, I like polkas.)

The song is about being ‘friend-zoned’.

(Btw, I believe that her sister is playing the drums,
her brother is playing bass, and
her husband is lead guitarist.
And, yup, bringing her husband into the family business did cause
a few… tensions…)

Si La Quieres (Live)

If You Love Her
You want to tell her that you love her more than anyone
And as your friend, what advice can I give you?
Tell her that without her you can’t live
What you never came to feel for me

And in your eyes, I can see that tenderness
The anxiety, and love, and insanity
And in my mind I can only see
The sweet moment when you kiss her skin
And I’d die at having to admit
That you look good with her…

If you love her, go and tell her “I love you”*
You shouldn’t lose even a moment with her
In which she waits for you, and I will remain here

If you love her, go and tell her “I love you”
You deserve to have her in your arms forever
With you forever
And I will remain here

okay, so I went to see Tommy (the Broadway musical) tonight. My report:

Cast, band, sets, choreography all excellent. Of special note — the kids playing 4-year-old Tommy and 10-year-old Tommy, the woman playing The Acid Queen (Christina Sajous), and the production number for Pinball Wizard (this is the excerpt I expect to see performed at the next Tonys).

WARNING: if you’re photosensitive or epileptic or if you react badly to strobe lights… THIS SHOW IS NOT FOR YOU. Sorry, but it’s just not.

White-collar workers at Chrysler parent Stellantis have reason to be nervous if they ever receive a company notice telling them it’s mandatory that they work remotely on a particular day.

That’s what happened to 400 or so of their colleagues on Thursday. They were informed via a notice that the next day the carmaker would be “holding important operational meetings that require specific attention and participation.”

“To ensure everyone can effectively participate,” the notice continued, “we have decided to implement a mandatory remote work day.” Employees, it indicated, were “expected to work from home unless otherwise instructed by your manager.” The Car Dealership Guy X account shared the notice on Thursday.

The workers in question were salaried, nonunion employees in technology and engineering in the U.S.

During the remote meeting on Friday, they were informed that they were being laid off.

Boebert’s recent denials regarding the multitude of rumors swirling around about her past reminded me of this story:

Supposedly LBJ, in one of his early congressional campaigns, told one of his aides to spread the story that Johnson’s opponent fucked pigs.

The aide responded “Christ, Lyndon, we can’t call the guy a pigfucker. It isn’t true.”

To which LBJ supposedly replied “Of course it ain’t true, but I want to make the son-of-a-bitch deny it.”

And, it seems to me, her Congressional record is sufficient to judge both her character and her competence.

I went to see Tommy many years ago. I love The Who’s music, so I thought it was great. My son is leaving on his HS Band trip to NYC today. They are going to play at the Statute of Liberty, and they are going to see Hamilton on Broadway. Four years ago, the band was going to go to NYC, but the trip was canceled because the pandemic had started raging there.

She had the opportunity on her first appearance on NBC to acknowledge the bullshit she’d pushed as RNC Chair and begin trying to rehabilitate her image. Instead, she excused her behavior and tried to argue that it was totally justified. After that, whatever value she had as a “consultant” or “political commentator” was nil. She was as useless to NBC as she was to the RNC.

We now have radio transmissions from the ship to emergency authorities, calling a mayday and urging that the bridge be closed to traffic as a hit was possible/likely. Police managed to close the bridge to traffic and were trying to figure out how to reach the workers on the bridge. As they were trying to figure out the latter, the bridge collapsed. 6 workers remain missing and presumed killed.

The ship’s crew did their jobs in trying to get word out to prevent a far greater tragedy. It remains subject to investigation why the ship lost power and what the root cause of the failure.

The Ghost of a Flea  Mar 27, 2024 • 7:56:22am

Eugenics isn’t, and never has been, an attempt to actually define “who is intelligent,” it’s always been starting from the conclusion—people like me, that I like, are inherently good and smart—and working backwards.

Which is why so many people into this…including your “Bell Curve” readers but also just your all-political stripes IQ test citing turds…overlook and despise all environmental and sociogenic—let alone socioeconomic—reasons that intelligence varies. The point of the exercise is to simplify the world: those are the lesser kinds and they need to be kept out of the way of us better types.

As always, the drive for any hierarchy in which the believers are in the higher tier matters more than any episteme of how hierarchy is justified.

It’s never just measured skulls, it’s measuring skulls and then ignoring any skull diameter that tells a story that’s inconvenient. Like, a hundred fifty years ago this type of physiognomist ghoul was making argument about how Irish people were like black people, lesser-developed humans, on the basis of facial structure, because that was the required belief to do what the British were doing to the Irish.

Musk and the people he promotes are just announcing how they would order the world: according to race and class, with a red line of who gets how much care and dignity that…coincidentally…they and all their friends are both above and are in charge of enforcing.

And amending the charter would be tricky - even for Trump and his outsized sway over the company. That’s the kind of thing that would have to be disclosed ahead of time because it would impact potential buyers of the stock.

“He can’t do this quietly. If President Trump today intends to amend the charter and they are not disclosing this intention, that’s a problem,” Whitehead said. “Presumably, they would need to take the position after the vote approving the merger that President Trump woke up and suddenly said, ‘Hey, let’s amend the charter.’”

They are going to hire “auditors” who will make the Arizona Cyber Ninjas look like experienced professionals. Expect record levels of bamboo traces on ballots all throughout the country.

I understand what you are saying but I view it differently. This time around the
“auditors/disrupters” will be better prepared, they will have real game plans based on lessons learned from the failed attempts last time around. Playbooks will be written ahead of time, lawyers will be hired and prepared on a state by state basis. Instead of just laying the public groundwork by complaining about the election before votes are even cast, they are already making actual preparations, even seeding ‘evidence’ or precedent for when it’s needed.

This is the advantage of the second coup attempt, things can be learned from the first. The second one, if allowed, is even more dangerous than the first despite the fact that everyone now knows it might happen. They might have to reach even farther to produce delusional evidence but they will be prepared for it.

The judge is most likely not including himself and his family as being a party to the gag order; because judges are tasked with overseeing justice, they are very frequently the subject of vitriol and threats, and are expected to have thick enough skin to shrug it off (and to know when to take threats seriously and seek protection). He’s probably pretty close to the line, though.

Fun article on Dkos about Truth Social being a fork of Mastodon.

TFG’s team took the Mastodon code, legally, but…
Well, TFG’s team took the Mastodon code (legal) and built their own social media (legal) with blackjack and hookers. (Also legal.) However, if you copy it and release it, you *must* also release your source code. (Uh-oh.)

snip…

In July 2023, Mastodon discovered and rapidly patched a severe vulnerability which would allow any media to be overwritten, and remote code to be run.

It would seem that, despite Mastodon doing the heavy lifting and writing the bugfixes 8 months ago, that nobody at Truth Social has bothered to implement those patches and others. I know you’re probably as shocked as I am to hear that the engineers at Truth Social are incompetent at their jobs. If their source code is to be believed, they have not patched anything since June 2022. Or… maybe they are indeed patching them, but not in compliance with their open-source license AGAIN.

snip…

However, if left unpatched, the vulnerability would allow a clever hacker to pretty much ruin everyone’s day that uses the site. Not that I’m wishing that on anyone. Especially not during the IPO. Because that would be bad.

Emphasis mine…definitely would be a crying shame for a public company to get hacked in its maiden week.

Yesterday a House Committee of the Kentucky General Assembly inserted into a personnel bill a provisions making all executive branch positions which require a law license non-merit, meaning the Governor could fire them all without cause and replace them with whoever he wants. This is strange, because the Governor is a Democrat and the General Assembly is overwhelmingly Republican. Governor Beshear was just reelected to a new four year term, so you would think that if they were doing this to create patronage jobs for a future Republican Governor to fill, they would wait a few years. I guess the Republican Attorney General could replace some non-merit attorneys on his staff.

I believe the gag order specifically allowed comments on the judge and the DA, just not their staff. The question is if it extended to the judges family. I suspect at worst he will get an admonition and a clarification that the judge’s family is off limits.

Russell T Davies says end of BBC is ‘undoubtedly on its way’

According to the head of one of the BBC’s most successful franchises, the broadcaster’s end is inevitable.

Speaking on television podcast They Like to Watch, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies explains that there is a good reason for the fantasy drama being co-produced with Disney: it means that its survival doesn’t require the continued existence of the BBC.

“You’ve got to look in the long term at the end of the BBC, which is undoubtedly on its way in some shape or form,” says Davies.

“Is Doctor Who going to die then? No! You’ve got to prepare for that kind of stuff.”

The lack of lavish BBC budgets is another reason that Davies claims Doctor Who’s future requires Disney’s involvement - particularly in a world where high-budget productions are increasingly the norm, as Doctor Who needs “to be up there with the big hitters”

Just watch - the DJT board will approve Trump to sell some of his stock, and the public will not find out about - it until a public filing requires it.

Trump, or any other insider, selling meaningful amounts would cause a massive selloff in the stock. They couldn’t hide it.

Mouse 1 DeSantis oh forget it…

Actually, reading through the WaPo piece, it looks more like a draw that a win (for either side). I’m presuming there is going to be some sort of “understanding” between Disney and the oversight Board; but the conditions DeSantis set up, i.e. that the Board is dominated by the State’s, rather than the company’s, appointees looks like it will remain in place. For now.
Reading between the lines, I’m guessing the “understanding” is that Disney can keep on having their Pride Nights or whatever, and call off their lawyers; while Little Lord Whiteboots and the FL GOP restrict their criticisms to online carping (vs. legislation), and the Reedy Creek Board doesn’t interfere TOO much with Disney’s development plans.

According to Politico, Ronna McDaniel expects to have her full two-year NBC contract paid in full.

“McDaniel expects to be fully paid out for her contract, two years at $300,000 annually, since she did not breach its terms, we’re told — meaning that her single, not-quite-20-minute interview Sunday could cost the Peacock more than $30,000 per minute, or $500 per second.”

Keep her on contract and make sure she is not allowed to appear on any TV network or media platform for those 2 years. That’s a great way to kill her already destroyed brand.

TL:DR The changes made in the Electoral Count Act make it harder for he MAGAs to muck things up. Not mpossible but harder.
_____________
I recognize the below does not cover every aspect of ratfucking they may do. But it clarifies a lot, making it much harder to accomplish, if we do our part and vote.

I finally checked out more details about the Electoral Count Reform and Presidential Transition Improvement Act of 2022

I’d heard about some of its provisions - the VP role is simply ceremonial and it takes 20% of each House to object to a slate of electors. But they can only object over the lawful verification of the electors or that the electoral vote was not regularly given. And the debate is then by each House separately with the majority deciding. And both Houses have to vote for withdrawal of the electors for it to happen.

So some ability to ratfuck the proceedings but mainly just to slow things down. If we win at least one House, it will be hard to use this part to accomplish much.

The new Act also has some interesting stuff that I had not known. If states use popular vote to determine electeos, they cannot change that after the vote has happened. The governor is responsible for submitting the certificates unless changed by state law, again before the election.

So, no changing the rules after they lose. Also, this next bit is going to have a big impact - a certificate of electors that was revised as ordered by a state or federal court judgment before the meeting of electors supersedes all previous certificates. So if the state tries to illegally change the certificate, the courts have final say. Thus there likely will be only 1 slate of electors.

And the site for any challenges is the Federal District of the state capital (so no Kacsmaryk from the Northern District of Texas nor court shopping). It is all on an expedited basis with “any appeal from the court’s judgment may be heard directly by the Supreme Court on an expedited basis, and the court’s final order on remand must occur at the latest on the day before the electors’ meeting.”

Yeah, it is a Calvinball Court, ac orrupt one but I simply do not see Roberts playing ball with all the MAGAs. He is not going to allow his Supreme Court legacy be that he threw the election into the House and helped a coup. So, whoever the Court certifies the day before is who the electors are. Period. Any corrupt finding would be way too obvious. (Yeah, corrupt is corrupt but again, this will have to be out in the open. They showed no inclination to do anything like this before - Trump lost, wha, 62 times before)

There is probably no way to absolutley prevent any sort of ratfucking. But this new Act makes it harder and requires much greater organizational abilities (ie a corrupt Governor cannot run out the clock or send 2 slates).

The clarification of the legal process makes it harder to muck things up. Any challenge goes directly to a 3 person Court and any appeal goes directly to the Supremes. Which has to render a decision the day before the electors meet to vote in December. Hard to run out the clock with fake ones. We will know exactly what slate of electors will be counted.

Thus, the Congressional counting should only see one slate of electors.

SO, no real way for multiple elector lists to show up. The Court decisions are final. If that had been in place in 2020, Trump would never have been able to go anywhere with the fake elector scheme.

Not to say there is no way they cannot stage another coup attempt. But it is much more constrained. And the clarification that the rules cannot be changed after the election and that the Federal Courts have jurisdiction on an expedited basis puts some clear roadblocks in the attempt.

It is going to take a lot more organized work for them to make it ‘look’ legal. If we do our part and vote (let’s fucking flip Florida and Texas), I think chances are very slim they will be organized and smart enough to be successful. I hope.

I realize I’m pecking at a semantic issue, but this isn’t just further “both sides” behavior consistent with the past. This is paying someone whose only notable features are (1) shameless lying, (2) justifying uses of power that are entirely outside of political norms.

It’s expanding the illusion of balance to incorporate open authoritarianism as a “needed perspective” and should be described exactly as such. This is beyond a gaffe and is well into being a terrible indicator about the future of the press: the management class is signaling their willingness to accommodate reaction as just another choice.

Like centrists that drop into far right always do, they’re wagering that they can preserve their clout and money through reaction, while any kind of movement left…even just trade unionism…reduces their power.

Create enough chaos and clusterfuck to get a sizeable share of the votes tossed out on some sort of procedural grounds or just have them somehow compromised, corrupted or outright hijacked.

From what I read about the new Counting Act, it is much hard to just shove shit around to muck things up. There won’t be 62 court cases. The Federal courts will decide on an expedited basis and their decision is what will count. So there likely will not be multiple slates of electors from multiple states.

Could the Court do a whole bunch of corrupt decisions line in Florida 2000? Possibly. But this Court has not shown any inclination to help Trump here, at least from what they did in 2020.

Are they smart enough to try a different approach, because the multiple electors approach does not seem as likely this time? Possible which is why we have to be smarter.

We have to be on guard and we cannot slow down. We need to flip Florida and Texas, at least wrt their Senators. And get all the swing states on board. It is going to be hard but we are beter prepared this time. Fingers crossed.

Instead, she excused her behavior and tried to argue that it was totally justified. After that, whatever value she had as a “consultant” or “political commentator” was nil. She was as useless to NBC as she was to the RNC.

Good points: to which I will proffer the observation that at least some of the possible problems are going to be self-correcting to some degree: “Red” states are going to vote for Trump; “blue” states will Go For Joe; no issues there. The main problems, IMO, will be in those “battleground” states with Republican administrations/legislatures; and there are only a few of those (IMHO). NC. GA, WI, AZ; possibly NV, possibly VA(?).
And IMO, if the vote count in TX, FL or OH is close enough that GOP fuckery might be a serious factor in tabulations or certifying EVs, we’re looking at a “blue tsunami” situation where said fuckery (even assuming the courts don’t just slap it all down like they did the last time) probably won’t help them, anyway.

Lara Logan unleashes bizarre Baltimore bridge conspiracy theory

Former Fox News and CBS reporter Lara Logan went off the rails in a segment on Steve Bannon’s “War Room,” concocting an elaborate conspiracy theory that the Baltimore bridge disaster was actually a cyberattack directed against the United States — and somehow tied it to theories that the 2020 presidential election was rigged

“This is what you call death by 1,000 cuts,” said Logan. “It is an absolutely catastrophic attack on critical infrastructure and you cannot see it because a cyberattack is unseen, just like the attack on 2020, on the voting machines that you cannot see.”

“There’s not a direction that you can look in Steve, where we have our leaders,” she continued. “People in power have been systematically dismantling the defenses of the United States of America. And this attack is a wake-up call, open your eyes and realize what you are facing because they cannot afford for this election to take place.

I’d be worried more if they had even one court victory on their ratfuckery last time.

Seeing as this is Trump we’re talking about, what’s the over/under on those MAGA Bibles being printed in China?

Part of every purchase can be made a recurring donation to his legal fees.

re: #210 GlutenFreeJesus

I remember watching her during OIF when she was embedded with US troops. Lots of hot mic moments of her swearing etc. but her war coverage was good. Now she’s just a poisoned mind way beyond saving.

She was gang-raped by an Egyptian mob before openly joining the racist-right, so I’m less likely to take the time to condemn her than with hateful people who have always had easy lives and just chose hate with a clear head.

They will not be able to have an entire state disqualified. They will not find some magic argument. And there won’t be provable irregularities to even ” disqualify” a single precinct.

And
more than one state?
In this one election?
never happen
Repeat never

It would hve to be multiple states, and at least one or two large ones.

They are working on it.

And again, I do hope they fail bigly

God won’t even listen to a prayer unless it’s prayed while holding a Trump endorsed bible.

I think they won’t have nearly as much money as they’ll need
It’ll mostly go to (eta: tfgs) legal defense
