They did this in order to enhance the party talking points. To be able to present to their knuckle-dragging base that this is some sort of secret partisan Deep State witch hunt.

From that point of view, it was wasted energy. Anyone stupid enough to go for that will already vote for them. (That’s a majority in AL.)
