The James Bond novels were written in the 1950s. Ian Fleming was assistant to Sir William Stephenson, a Canadian war hero and self-made millionaire selected by Churchill to run British intelligence in North America before and after the U.S. entered the war. Several of the James Bond novels, including “View to a Kill” were based upon actual incidents in which Stephenson personally assassinated Nazi and Japanese spies in and around New York City.
