“Skin in the game,” the line that Repubs use when they want to tax poor people while protecting a tax system that allows companies to not only avoid paying any taxes but even sees the federal government cutting them checks worth millions annually.

I think that there is some merit to the ‘skin in the game’ argument in theory, but in practice it makes no sense, especially in the US where the tax filing process is so stupid. The additional burden of going through the filing process would be more of a PITA for low income earners than a $50 or whatever token tax.

Also, ironically, it was the GOP’s drive to lower taxes and increase deductions that allow most low income people to not pay any federal income tax, so of course the GOP is railing against the ‘problem’ they helped create.
