In a sparse, dimly lit Austin office building, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols stands in front of the mic stand with his steel guitar. As he finger picks into the first song “Living Hell,” the stark surroundings are juxtaposed against the warmth of his raspy vocals.

He performs his Tiny Desk (home) concert solo, a testament to the engaging storytelling of the blues, a genre he reclaims on his self-titled debut album. In his three-song set, Nichols sings about not making it into heaven, living in hell and the life of someone who is lost and lonesome. But these aren’t your run of the mill, down-and-out blues songs – Nichols is adamant about making the genre current and making it Black again. Originally from Wisconsin, he mentions that he moved to the Austin, Texas music scene at the beginning of the pandemic, a fitting preface to his next song that starts with, “If you see me in your town, looking tired with my head hanging down / You may wonder what went wrong, why am I always all alone.”

Buffalo Nichols’ acoustic set represents all the best parts of Tiny Desk; a humble desk, a talented artist and music that speaks for itself.

Waiting to hear what our brother has to say this weekend about Putin, given the widespread praise from Trump and his minions. When we chatted about 10 days ago, he was all on board with heavy sanctions that would severely damage Russia, but he’s been known to do a 180 when Trump speaks and informs his cult of the correct views. He’ll probably go with the fantasy that Putin would never have attacked if Trump were still in office because Putin had too much respect (or fear?) for him.

Nixon certainly was knowledgeable about history and policies but he was not a good person. His 1950 campaign against Helen Gahagan Douglas for Senate tarred her with being supportive of Communists.

And then there was the Cambodian bombing authorized by Nixon that led to the overthrow of the government there and eventually the takeover by Pol Pot, who murdered, directly or indirectly, up to 2 million of his fellow citizens. And let’s not forget the overthrow of the Allende government in Chile.

Nixon’s big issue was paranoia, an almost overwhelming belief that there was always a conspiracy against him. A big part of that was losing the election in ‘60 to Kennedy, with a lot of open whispering that Joe Kennedy had greased more than a few palms to get his kid in the WH and secure his family’s legacy. From that point forward, Nixon was absolutely convinced that the Dems were dirty cheats and so the only way to win against them was to cheat harder.

And that LBJ knew this had gone on, but refused to make it public because he didn’t want to be seen as exercising influence on an election he was not running in. All the deaths that occurred in Vietnam after the peace talks fell apart are why that man deserves a place in the lowest pits of Hell.

Why? “Better than another war.” Oh sure, the West will press Moscow on the new land borders and will insist on keeping land grab to as small a footprint as they can get away with, but the result will be the same: Ukraine gets shafted, Vlad gets another notch in the “W” column, and the West pats themselves on the back for once again averting war. And then the song and dance will continue all over again as another district falls into “rebellion” and another puppet government begs Moscow for recognition.

The moose spotted roaming around a densely-populated Marlborough neighborhood was tranquilized by the Massachusetts Environmental Police at about 10 a.m., tagged, and taken to a wildlife management area in northern Worcester County, Martin Feehan, a deer-moose biologist for the state Division of Fisheries and Wildlife, told The MetroWest Daily News, a WCVB media partner.

It took two tranquilizer darts to get the 6-year-old female to sleep, he said.

“Everything went very smoothly,” said Feehan. “We deal with about four or five of these a year. She’s a pretty healthy moose.”

The roughly 600-pound (270-kilogram) moose was likely looking for food, according to a statement from the wildlife agency. Suburban areas are planted with an abundance of soft ornamental shrubs and trees that are rich in calories, needed by breeding cows.

I have no idea. I have moose license plates on my car. We pay a bit extra for NH’s conservation efforts. Every year or so there’s a sighting in and around Manchester, but I doubt I’ll ever see one. Let’s also recall that millionaires get a huge tax break by not having to pay any tax for OASDI (Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid tax) on income over $147,000 in 2022. Someone with income under that level pays more in tax than someone who makes more than that, since a person making $250k would not pay this tax on every dollar over $147,000, meaning they get to keep even more of their money. This also helps explain the solvency issues Social Security has - if everyone were required to pay this tax on all income, not just up to the threshold, we’d see a more stable SS system.

Poor people already pay more than their fair share in tax, considering that they use a greater percentage of their income to pay taxes - sales taxes, fuel taxes, property taxes, etc., than someone who is rich.

The Medicaid scammer who paid a record fine and somehow avoided prison for running one of the largest scams of its kind, wants poor people to pay more.

It’s entirely on brand for the GOP.

The housing market here is warped in all sorts of ways, some of them well-meaning. Only about 1/3 of NYC’s housing is actually subject to the Free Market system. My grandparents first rented what’s now my apartment in 1967, under a special redevelopment subsidized rent-stabilization rule. Rent stabilization can be passed along to direct descendants; for my college graduation present in the mid-80’s, they added me to the lease. Then decamped to Cali for the rest of their lives. 2 years later the building went co-op — rent-stabilized tenants could buy in at 40% below market value.

My second cousin (grandma’s sister’s grandson) got an even more amazing deal on his place — landmark building, great-aunt had been there since 1927.

One has to look long and hard, and squint very carefully, to find anything here that could be considered in the ballpark of a serious policy proposal. The Contract with America, on which this is modeled, had actual policy ideas (though some of them were pretty inside baseball). Scott, by contrast, is offering things that have virtually no meaning (“starve Washington’s economy”?), or else things that aren’t achievable (e.g., getting rid of separation of church and state). Of course, there are also generous dollops of fascism (mandatory flag saluting) and irony (“we believe the [alleged] science” on gender identity, but not on, say, vaccines or global warming).

This is a brief consideration of my Ukraine content, mainly the responses I got, and the state of online leftism in general.

The underlying principle driving my Ukraine takes is that I don’t like it when autocracies annex democratic countries in 21st century Europe. This is a perfectly defensible position, that no one intheir right mind would oppose. Or would they?

Enter tankies, a.k.a. authoritarian “leftists”. I’ve gotten plenty of responses from them, and based on those, I’ve never been more comfortable calling them what they are: red nazis. It makes sense, since Vladimir Putin himself is a far-right leader who runs an autocratic, crony-capitalist oligarchy. During his address about Ukraine and the Donbass, he even invoked the famous “blood and soil” argument, and I don’t need to tell you where that comes from.

For any leftist in their right mind, “reunification of ethnically homogenous areas” should ring all sorts of alarm bells. I thought one of the main ideas of leftism was that nation and ethnicity are artificial divides, the real one being between workers and owners. The former are still bound by borders, while the latter is increasingly global.

In light of this, tankies told me how the annexation of Crimea and the Donbass are okay, because there is a high percentage of ethnically Russian people in both places. This is the exact argumentation actual nazis used when Hitler annexed the German parts of Czechoslovakia in 1938 (Sudetenland). Isn’t that interesting.

Another big talking point is the “Ukrainian neo nazis”. We can’t support Ukraine, they say, because our aid will also make it to the Azov Batallion, etc. This is a conservative argument, often made against Palestinians, when they try to equate the Palestinian struggle with Hamas. We cant support Palestinians, they say, because our aid will also make it to Hamas and other Islamists.

Generally speaking, conservative ideas involve turning your brain off, and yielding to your biases and intuition. You start out with “trans people are disgusting”, “blacks are violent thugs”, “Muslims are scary”, and so on, and then you go and listen to Ben Shapiro, Steven Crowder, PragerU, etc. who validate and cultivate these feelings and biases in you.

Leftist ideas tend to involve the opposite. You recognize your biases, and that your intuition might not always be correct, thus you’re willing to consider ideas and possibly change your mind, even if they contradict said biases and intuition.

From tankies, I’ve seen very little of the latter, and a whole lot of the former. Almost as if they hold fundamentally right-wing, authoritarian views with a thin veil of progressivism over it.

This view of mine is reinforced by the kind of responses I got. You know how online conservatives and alt-righters usually respond to my takes? Instead of arguments, it’s either Ben Shapiro talking points, or the usual “soyboy libeuck SJW commie anti-white reeee”.
As for tankies, I cannot recall a single argument against any of my positions regarding Ukraine. It’s always either parroting proven Russian disinfo, or the usual “NATO state department CIA shill US imperialism reeee”.

To quote a Ben Shapiro classic: “Curious.”

Tankies aren’t leftists. They think they are, which is both funny and sad. If they were, they wouldn’t support Vladimir Putin, a far-right leader engaged in ethno-nationalist imperialism.

It’s your ideas and values that make you a leftist, not how much you hate the US.

Let’s also recall that millionaires get a huge tax break by not having to pay any tax for OASDI (Social Security, Medicare/Medicaid tax) on income over $147,000 in 2022. Someone with income under that level pays more in tax than someone who makes more than that, since a person making $250k would not pay this tax on every dollar over $147,000, meaning they get to keep even more of their money. This also helps explain the solvency issues Social Security has - if everyone were required to pay this tax on all income, not just up to the threshold, we’d see a more stable SS system.

Poor people already pay more than their fair share in tax, considering that they use a greater percentage of their income to pay taxes - sales taxes, fuel taxes, property taxes, etc., than someone who is rich.

The Medicaid scammer who paid a record fine and somehow avoided prison for running one of the largest scams of its kind, wants poor people to pay more.

It’s entirely on brand for the GOP.

Even a cursory glance at research into this mythical pool of “young bucks” and “welfare queens” shows that the majority of them are either too young or too old to pay taxes. But you’re not told that, you’re just supposed to hear “half the country doesn’t pay taxes” and assume they’re all healthy and able-bodied folks who choose to be poor so they can avoid paying income taxes.

A few—
1. What is defined as income?
2. Are there deductions? Exemptions?
3. 5% on income of $20,000 is far greater in real terms than 25% on income of $1,000,000. After all, it’s not as though other costs are expressed as a percentage of income: a gallon of milk costs the same regardless of your income level. Indeed, often those who are poor pay a far higher price for their goods and services.

Up to whatever amount Congress has authorized for the new formula. They can still cap that. Average income is an average based on earnings up to that cap for a year, and then indexed to wage inflation between the year earned and (maybe) the year you reach age 60. In 1998 the cap was 68,400 and in 1999 the cap was 72,600. In calculating the AIME (Average indexed monthly earnings), the income earned in 1998 was limited to 68,400 and that in 1999 was limited to 72,600. Anything in excess is ignored. The capped earnings in 1998 are then indexed from 1998 to the year you reached age 60(?). The AIME is then determined by averaging the highest 35 indexed pays.

Not all convoys suck.

Unless you saw the coffin on the flatbed trailer in the lead, you might have thought the convoy of more than 200 trucks in central Missouri on Monday was a political statement of some kind.

But the long procession on Highway 54 from Eugene to Jefferson City was in honor of a 13-year-old named Dalton Frank who loved trucks and often told his uncle that he wanted to be part of a convoy someday.

The uncle, 33-year-old Carey Frank, led the way in his big, gleaming Peterbilt with the boy’s father beside him. The only message Carey and his fellow truckers were seeking to convey concerned bullying, which is what they say drove the eighth grader to take his own life on Feb. 14.

Even a cursory glance at research into this mythical pool of “young bucks” and “welfare queens” shows that the majority of them are either too young or too old to pay taxes. But you’re not told that, you’re just supposed to hear “half the country doesn’t pay taxes” and assume they’re all healthy and able-bodied folks who choose to be poor so they can avoid paying income taxes.

Not how I see the phrase, and likely more white people pay 0% federal income tax than minorities.
Though your interpretation is likely how the GOP uses it as a dog whistle.

The phrase makes sense in the case of shared ownership of something, where if you’re even a small fractional owner you’re more likely to take better care of X then if you have no stake. If there was more education towards the idea that citizens are the actual owners of the USA, and that taxes are what we pay for that ownership, etc then maybe more people would bother to vote and be more outraged when they get screwed over.

And no, I’m in no way advocating that lower income people should carry a bigger overall tax burden; quite the opposite. For starters, all income should be taxed at the same rate; passive income shouldn’t get preferential treatment, which is gross. The Bush tax cuts that changed the treatment of dividends should never have passed, and for sure should have been allowed to sunset, yet they’re still in force. It’s a joke.

A few—
1. What is defined as income?
2. Are there deductions? Exemptions?
3. 5% on income of $20,000 is far greater in real terms than 25% on income of $1,000,000. After all, it’s not as though other costs are expressed as a percentage of income: a gallon of milk costs the same regardless of your income level. Indeed, often those who are poor pay a far higher price for their goods and services.

I could get behind a flat tax where:

Texas is run by monsters. Full stop. And the system is so broken that they’ll probably be rewarded for this, even as they commit to literal genocide on trans folk, with little care for the fallout or collateral. And they won’t stop there either. THey’ll go after the whole LGBT slate if they can get away with this, and then extrapolate that toward beating non-whites, religious minorities, and women back into submission after that if they keep going, because the end game has always been white male Christian supremacy.

As I said yesterday, they are no longer content with just shoving us back into the closet. They want us DEAD and are openly advocating policies towards that end. Since I am openly out as a Trans-Woman, I am well aware that every time I go out in public presenting as my true self, I have a fucking bullseye painted on my back. Just one of the “fun” facts of Trans life in a deeply red State.

Sounds like a modem problem to me. What one are you using? I have the C1100Z

I have the same one. I got through to C-Linik and the tech ran some tests and then had me reset the modem on the back. Works fine now. She also told me that I shouldn’t do a reset without a tech running the tests first, so I should call if it happens again. Who am I to argue? At least she didn’t ask me if I’d tried unplugging and replugging the modem. She may have rolled her eyes a few times while we talked.

Honestly my first reaction when it didn’t work was “Russia!!”

I wish there was something like Social Security for parents who had to take time away from the workforce to raise kids. I don’t know how it would be funded, but I get tired of hearing all this crap about motherhood being some pinnacle of women’s lives and yet very little exists to support them. If I was divorced and my husband was remarried or dead, I would be eligible for 512 dollars a month from SS on my own. Because I took 13 yrs off of work to help my kid through K-12, and another few beyond that to make sure he got into two programs for young adults to foster more independence via job skills, learning to drive, etc. I spent more than 5 years looking for work before Covid-19 and never got so much as a rejection letter or any response at all. Even walking into places and talking to managers and HR people didn’t work. I have 30 yrs of retail and management experience and spent two years as a personal assistant to a designer who did work for rich clients designing invitations, stationery and other stuff related to that. I also spent about 3 years as a preschool teacher and a substitute teacher for grades K-5 and worked on an auto parts production line. So it’s not like I never held down a job.

I am not the only woman this has happened to surely. My mom wasn’t about to help by watching her grandkids while I worked(many of my old friends had this luxury, I didn’t) and specialized day care cost more than I made a month. So what happens to us if we have no working husband who can collect social security? Once the kids are raised and don’t need us anymore then what? It’s scary to contemplate.

A West Texas woman running to be the state’s railroad commissioner has turned heads after she posted a TikTok of herself topless and without pants while straddling an oil pumping jack.

Sarah Stogner, 37, tweeted out the controversial video, set to The Sugarhill Gang’s Apache (Jump On It) song, on February 13, writing: ‘They said I needed money. I have other assets.’

The video - which has now been viewed more than 104,800 times - was apparently meant to garner attention for Stogner’s campaign, as she trailed frontrunner Wayne Christian, the incumbent who currently has $766,256 on hand as voters head to the polls, according to Transparency USA, a website that tracks campaign funding.

But in the wake of the video, Stogner was ridiculed online - and even lost the endorsement of one of the state’s major newspapers - while others praised her bravery and success at garnering attention.

As the isolationist* wing spouts dribble. International connections are much greater than they were in the 1920s/30s in addition to the USA being less self-dependent on resources than they were then. Standing by while the rest of the world goes in chaos is a recipe for disaster since if you let it fester and grow it will come to our shores in a way that it will be very very expensive to stop, assuming it can be stopped at that point.

A general success of US foreign policy, if you want to call it that, and that we did our warfighting in the 20th century on other people’s land and not our own. A major reason we came out of WW2 with a fully intact internal economy and infrastructure while Europe, Japan, etc. were it ruins that would take decades to rebuild.
