I know, but I really don’t think we should be valorizing Goldwater for avoiding one specific kind of hatred while he did everything within his power to gin up others. AuH2O failed his test of character, and was just another backbench Senator by the time the Christian Right got going (and he didn’t do much of substance to oppose them then). A family trait, I guess. My father despises Eisenhower for similar reasons, because Ike was willing to ride Joe McCarthy’s coattails to the Oval Office rather than stand up to him, until the Army itself was under attack.
