Why would a supermarket have “tens of thousands” of cash on hand?

Because credit card companies here have started charging people to use credit cards in addition to merchants for accepting them (rent seeking on both sides of a transaction). Credit card companies are using us for an experiment to see if they can employ this throughout the country.

The response has been merchants throughout the Nebraska Panhandle to rip out credit card machines.

Most companies pay here with cheques because of the lack-of-Internet and cell phone service means there are no such things as on-line billing or taking a photo of your cheque to deposit in your bank.

Cost of Internet is why I’m the only person in my town with Internet service. For everyone else here, the cost outweighs the benefit.

None of my local business is in credit. My credit card is only used on trips or buying things on-line.

Even hotels and car rental places here accept cash deposits.
