Why would a supermarket have “tens of thousands” of cash on hand?

Cash checks on payday.

Seems plausible. Just seems like most places do mainly direct deposit these days.

I suppose for smaller businesses in more rural areas it might be a bit different.

Nikki Haley and Tim Scott are relatively unknown, so they have room to grow their favorables, unlike Trump, Pence and Christy. But Trump takes all the oxygen and will be the nominee unless something takes him out of the race.

But seriously, 45% of America is planning to vote for a guy who was found liable for sexual assault, is indicted on financial fraud and, federally, for stealing nuclear secrets and storing them in a shower stall.

You’re not. Murdoch isn’t willing to bring the hammer down on Trump, because his audience doesn’t want to hear that and Fox News’ ratings and profitability would plummet.

Really for there to be any chance for the GOP to take out Trump, somebody would have to catch fire in Iowa and beat expectations to make Trump look vulnerable, then everybody would have to jump on their bandwagon. If Trump is over 50% in Iowa, the race will be all but over, IMHO.

Grocery stores or any other businesses in a rural area which will accept your paycheck to purchase groceries or other items tend to be popular on paydays.

Why would a supermarket have “tens of thousands” of cash on hand?

Because credit card companies here have started charging people to use credit cards in addition to merchants for accepting them (rent seeking on both sides of a transaction). Credit card companies are using us for an experiment to see if they can employ this throughout the country.

The response has been merchants throughout the Nebraska Panhandle to rip out credit card machines.

Most companies pay here with cheques because of the lack-of-Internet and cell phone service means there are no such things as on-line billing or taking a photo of your cheque to deposit in your bank.

Cost of Internet is why I’m the only person in my town with Internet service. For everyone else here, the cost outweighs the benefit.

None of my local business is in credit. My credit card is only used on trips or buying things on-line.

Even hotels and car rental places here accept cash deposits.

Probably unwarranted hope, but Trump’s espionage and obstruction indictment leads me to believe that the J6 investigation will go much more deeply and involve many more people and that’s why Lindsay is stroking out. It has to. You can’t just try and imprison hundreds of foot soldiers without going to the top of the chain.

Also, loved hearing the Larkin Poe songs in the last thread, esp. Mad as a Hatter after spending over a month with dad. He’s benign, but dementia is cruel regardless.

I normally don’t carry more than about $400 max (usually much less). My chequebook is much safer.

Credit cards can be used all along Interstate 80, as those businesses cater to tourists. If you were driving I-80/I-76 from Omaha to the Colorado line or I-80 to Pine Bluffs, Wyo., as long as you don’t stray more than a couple miles from the Interstate and stick strictly to tourist-type businesses (gas, restaurants, &c) you’d be fine with a credit card.

A few gas stations up this way will take credit cards, but it costs a lot more to buy gas that way (ten or so cents per gallon).

Totally irrelevant to any discussion today but I just had a former co-worker email me something like “I’m going to be in Denver in September, and I’d like to visit Yellowstone. I have five days. What, in addition to Yellowstone, should I see in CO and WY?” The guy’s from Brussels and I thought had been to the US often enough that he’d understand distances.

Summary of my reply was “One of the truck stops in Laramie WY might be an interesting stop on your day-long drive to Yellowstone”.

Yellowstone is closer to me in Nebraska than it is to Denver.

Southern Baptists Vote to Expel Churches With Women Pastors

According to the Times, the right wing of the already quite conservative denomination is “pressing for ideological purity and arguing that female pastors are a precursor to acceptance of homosexuality and sexual immorality.” More than 2,000 male pastors have already signed a letter in support of the amendment, which threatens to cast out roughly 1,800 women leaders. Southern Baptists have long said as a statement of faith that women shouldn’t be pastors, but this is believed to be the first time they’ve taken collective action to expel churches over it, according to the Associated Press.

This is the same organization that kept a list of predatory pastors that was never shared to parishioners, nor to law enforcement, but also argues that they couldn’t have talked openly about that list because “each church is it’s own organization and it’s not our part to get involved.

Everything they say makes perfect sense if simply accept the unstated premise that people are not equal: straight men, and especially male pastors, cannot be held to the same standard of moral examination women and gay men are, and in turn “sexual immorality” cannot spring from the well of men doing predation only from the inherent sexuality of simply being a woman or queer.

Who gets to be a sexual free actor making individual choices, who can be granted understanding and grace, versus who is a sexual body that cannot be other than a fuckable thing? It’s a hard-set hierarchy, where the Type Of Person you are leavens the entire proposal of what is morality.

I don’t know about pastors proper, but IIRC in more than one church scandal the people that learned about it and made noise were women laity who did a lot of the care work for the congregation.

This is all patriarchy in the true “rule by fathers” sense.

To Americans, 100 years is a long time. To Europeans, 100 miles is a long way. The size and scope of the United States and Canada is mind-boggling to someone who doesn’t live in that environment every day.

This reminded me that I was always taught that St Augustine FL (1565) was the oldest city in the US. Never mind that San Juan, Puerto Rico, was founded in 1521 but Acoma Pueblo in NM has been continuously inhabited since around 1025. Googling “oldest US city” still gets you St Augustine.

BTW, Santa Fe NM was founded in 1610 while New York City was founded by those Dutch in 1624

Major Genetic Risk Factors for Dupuytren’s Disease Are Inherited From Neandertals

Abstract (more at the link)

Dupuytren’s disease is characterized by fingers becoming permanently bent in a flexed position. Whereas people of African ancestry are rarely afflicted by Dupuytren’s disease, up to ∼30% of men over 60 years suffer from this condition in northern Europe. Here, we meta-analyze 3 biobanks comprising 7,871 cases and 645,880 controls and find 61 genome-wide significant variants associated with Dupuytren’s disease. We show that 3 of the 61 loci harbor alleles of Neandertal origin, including the second and third most strongly associated ones (P = 6.4 × 10−132 and P = 9.2 × 10−69, respectively). For the most strongly associated Neandertal variant, we identify EPDR1 as the causal gene. Dupuytren’s disease is an example of how admixture with Neandertals has shaped regional differences in disease prevalence.

So that’s where my brow ridge came from. /s

Putin and Belarusian president: ‘No problem at all’ to nuke the US

alternet.org

A nuclear strike could soon hit the United States, according to a Russian state TV, Newsweek reports.

Per Newsweek, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev mentioned in April that “the likelihood of nuclear weapons—described as the ‘backbone that holds the state together’—being used” was increasing.

Now, just days after Russian President Vladimir Putin said “he would begin deploying tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus” in early July, according to Newsweek, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko “said Tuesday that his country has received Russian nuclear weapons and would not hesitate to use them if provoked,” The Hill reports.

I don’t know about pastors proper, but IIRC in more than one church scandal the people that learned about it and made noise were women laity who did a lot of the care work for the congregation.

This is all patriarchy in the true “rule by fathers” sense.

40 years ago, I had a sense of a shift in rape culture when it started becoming more public that boys and men were being raped by religious men. For some people, it seemed, that was ‘too far’.

re: #65 Eclectic Cyborg

Wait, so they think their current all male staff does NOT have any issues with homosexuality and sexual immorality???

It’s the logic of caste.

Like, for comparison, if you were samurai you were in distinct grouping where you were given license to be violent to lesser kinds of people—merchants and peasants—while they were not permitted a proportional license to harm one another or harm a samurai. And within the hierarchy of samurai—ranging from daimyo that were effectively dukes to almost-peasants—there were granted different degrees of that license.

The “real” rule about violence was: don’t fuck with your superior’s ease and comfort.

So the same system produced a lot of dickheads throwing punches and drawing swords, but it also produced Tokugawa Tadanaga.

And so it goes for sexual exploitation and violence—in this kind of patriarchal society there’s a baseline license to do the immoral thing if you’re part of the power holder caste, and then a series of internal understandings about how much harm you can do before it becomes inconvenient or embarrassing for a superior.

Social position is always a part of crime and justice—we all watch regularly as a murder or theft is comma-fucked into being a non-crime because the person/people who did it have authority/fame/clout—it’s a struggle all communities have w/r/t power…

…but we’re talking about people who intuitively accept that premise: power always factors into what constitutes immorality.

I grew around men that talked this way, and were creeps and excusers-of-creepiness with everything related to girls and women. They were also homophobes to the point that me being weird meant me being some kind of queer.

I think the fucked thing is…they don’t even care about abused boys and men in concrete terms, those guys are failures, “ruined” and embarrassing. It’s deeply anthrophagous: those boys are made-damaged-goods by the abuse, no longer available to be made into bodies in ways that the patriarchs find pleasing, such as forcing them into military service or an early marriage. To them predators hurt boys the wrong way, make them uncertain and vulnerable to achieve the wrong objectives.

Who gets to be a sexual free actor making individual choices, who can be granted understanding and grace, versus who is a sexual body that cannot be other than a fuckable thing? It’s a hard-set hierarchy, where the Type Of Person you are leavens the entire proposal of what is morality.

Most people are simply unaware of how rapidly the cost of solar is dropping.Nice if we could get an even playing field vs fossil fuels.

At this point it isn’t about getting an even playing field, Solar and wind are already more cost effective than fossil fuels. The issue is now with grid storage. There simply isn’t enough of it and it is still quite expensive but getting better. Until you can build enough grid storage to smooth out the intermittent nature of wind and solar, fossil fuels(or nuclear) are simply necessary to keep the lights on and AC running and more and more your car charged.

Elon Musk, like basically all “Western Nostalgia” Twitter, is completely uninterested in the actual past. His bag is that he imagines himself a Great Man and thus entitled to choose the living and dying of others, and thus any figures that does this nakedly is impressive.

He’s also wants to be liked super bad, which is possibly why he’d choose the faux-populist Sulla over Zuckerburg’s preferred Roman fetish-image, Augustus, but that’s probably too much credit and what’ actually happening is that he’s too much of a weenus to actually declare his monarchist inclinations with his chest.

By percentage, the most dangerous job in the USA is President.

Of the forty-six presidents, four have been assassinated. (Lincoln, Garfield, McKinley, Kennedy).

Two were wounded (T. Roosevelt, Reagan).

Attempts: Jackson (the first attempt)
Lincoln (as President-elect in Baltimore, and in 1864)
Taft
Hoover
FD Roosevelt (as President-elect in Miami, but the assassin killed the mayor of Chicago) and a Nazi attempt foiled by the NKVD in Tehran
Truman (twice: attempts by letter-bomb by a Zionist activist before the independence of Israel opposing any accommodation of Palestinians by the USA, and by Puerto Rican independence activists at Blair House in London)
Kennedy (as President-elect, an anti-Catholic attempted to ram a dynamite-laden Cadillac into his car)
Nixon (three times, in Ottawa, Tehran, and an attempt to crash a private plane into the White House)
Ford (by Squeaky Frome at the California State Capitol building), and four days later in San Francisco (a bystander saw the gun come out and grabbed the would-be assassin’s arm; the shot injured a taxi driver)
Jimmy Carter (twice, by Raymond Lee Harvey and by John Hinkley—the same guy who shot Ronald Reagan)
Former President George HW Bush (by car bomb in Kuwait; Bill Clinton responded with a cruise missile attack against the plotters’ headquarters in Iraq)
Bill Clinton (six attempts)
George W. Bush (twice: A Soviet-made grenade thrown at him on a stage in Tbilisi, Georgia; a complicated attempt in 2022 involving smuggling ISIS radicals into the USA from Mexico
Barack Obama (seven attempts)
Donald Trump (a man in North Dakota tried to ram the Presidential car with a forklift; in The Philippines an agent of ISIS plotted to kill Mr. Trump but was arrested by the Philippine national police after a tip-off from the Secret Service.

Two others are rumoured as assassinations: Taylor (by arsenic, debunked in this century with analysis) and Harding (rumoured to have been poisoned by his wife since she refused an autopsy)

Of course, Texas and its need apparently to have its own grid will likely trail far behind.

Former Flint-area priest sentenced for sexually assaulting 5-year-old

GENESEE CO., Mich. (WNEM) - A former priest with the Lansing Diocese has been sentenced for sexually assaulting a 5-year-old boy.

On April 25, Vincent DeLorenzo, 84, formerly of Flint, pleaded guilty to sexually assaulting a 5-year-old boy following a service he officiated for the boy’s deceased family member in 1987, according to the Attorney General’s (AG) office.

The AG’s office said in exchange for DeLorenzo’s guilty plea, his remaining charges were dropped. Those charges involved the sexual assault of a child from 1995 to 2000 when that child was a student at a parochial school in Burton.

DeLorenzo was sentenced on Tuesday, June 13, to serve one year in the Genesee County Jail, which he received credit for 39 days served. He has also been sentenced to five years of probation.

The argument being made is that the machines must be controlled, and the control must be the kinds of Great Men that facilitated their construction.

They envision man-like machines, and want to keep them as property. They want those machines to facilitate a world of machine-like men, who technically cannot be owned outright, but can be cornered into a level of precarity and desperation that they can be de facto controlled to such a fine degree that they are effectively serfs…except the feudal lords will have deniability when the serfs drop dead

The only thing preventing the president from getting involved in the DOJ is convention and precedent and we know how much Trump cares about those.

Which works great until some dipshyte criminal hacker figures out how to take your super-focused solar beam or radio beam and redirects it to burn down a city full of liberals.

Sure, we have some bugs to work out ;-) From what I read, it would be the military need for this that would be the most dangerous, Civilian needs could use very diffuse EM beams that are collected by rectennas spread ove rhundreds of square miles. The wavelengths would be tuned to penetrate the atmosphere easily but not likely to be effective for burning things. Early experiments suggest this would not harm wildlife at all. And make it hard to them focus to be dangerous.

Military wants to use a much more concentrated, direct beam to provise energy to advanced military forces no in reach of fossil fuels. This more focussed beam could possible be more dangerous but it would likely also be much total lower power than civilian. Less able to do mass damage.

But this would likely be a stop gap as we move more industry from the Earth’s surface into space.

I think most space-based power will stay in space, powering colonies, mining and manufacturing facilities in sapce. I think we will move a lot of energy intenstive industries into space and they will get their energy needs there.

This would greatly lessen the energyu needs on the planet. And lessen the polluton from these sites.

re: #142 The Ghost of a Flea

I don’t think it’s even that tricky.

They’ll now ensure that this tech serves the interests of the owership class, so it won’t be “AI” making decisions that hurt people, it will be people training “AI” to make decisions that hurt people.

I still say the biggest worry about the increasing sophistication of “AI” is not that machines will suddenly rise up and wipe out all of us fleshy meatbags, it’s that a new generation of “AI” will mean a new generation of automation that will all the rich to further their dream of totally removing “labor costs” from the profit equation. Their dream is of fully automated factories that can be turned on and run continuously without humans ever being involved from beginning to end. And yes, that even means eventually building machines that care for the other machines, so that even tech support is little more than a manager telling a maintenance bot to go fix a sorter on the production line without ever leaving the comfort of his office.

But really, what is scaring people now is the reality that “AI” is in danger of intruding into those fields that the supporters of automation for decades argued would forever be the exclusive domain of humans because “Computers can’t imagine.” Well, obviously they don’t have to, they can just take your imagination and commercialize if for the people who want the results without the costs.

The cited article is a good summary of what is going on with the fighting in Ukraine right now.

Given these threats, the Ukrainian military is currently trying to achieve three things. Firstly, there is an intense counterbattery duel being fought, with both sides trying to strike each other’s logistics, command and control, reconnaissance, and artillery systems. The Russians are hunting for Ukraine’s artillery with Lancet UAVs. The Ukrainians are utilising Storm Shadow and GMLRS to try to destroy Russian command and control and munitions stockpiles.

Secondly, the Ukrainians are trying to get the Russians to commit their reserves, moving troops from the third defence line to bolster sectors under pressure. Once these troops are pulled forwards, it will become easier to identify the weak points in the Russian lines, where a breakthrough will not be met by a new screen of repositioned forces.

Thirdly, the Ukrainian military is trying to put pressure across the front to advance through the first line of defences in as much breadth as possible. The reason for this is to increase the options for attacking the main defence line and to keep Russian forces uncertain as to where the main effort will be launched. Furthermore, with such a long front, stretching out Russian troops limits their ability to stack units in depth, pulling more forward.

When you’ve lost Ron Johnson…

The latest twist of “evidence,” according to Republicans, is that there are now “tapes” allegedly proving the Biden bribe conspiracy theory.

But, in a Tuesday interview with a local Wisconsin right-wing talk radio show host, Johnson - whose outrageously wild claims in the past have crowned him the “Senate’s leading conspiracy theorist” a “bagman for Qanon,” and “Putin’s favorite Senator” - said the allegations he and other Republicans have been spreading now must be taken with a grain of salt.

“We don’t even know” if the tapes “exist,” Johnson said. “It’s a claim, it’s an allegation. We don’t know whether they really exist or not.”

I think it is unquestionably a form of intelligence. I mean it is a black box, it learns from a set of data you give it. Alpha Go was basically told the rules to Go and then let loose to play itself a billion times to learn the best strategies and was then able to beat the best Go masters in the world using strategies nobody could have predicted.

It may not be sentience, but is certainly a form of intelligence.

However a trick has been discovered that defeats this strategy although it doesn’t work against human players.

Ultra-local news: about an hour ago I was getting my dog in the car to drive her to the local college campus for a walk (I like to when the students are mostly gone; also, there’s a fenced-in area for track and field throwing events where I can let her off leash briefly). Just after I got the dog in the car a police cruiser pulled up and warned me that a bear had been sighted in the area. I said “wow” and turned around to look at the woods behind our townhouse when a juvenile black bear jumped up on a granite boulder and stared at us for a few seconds like “you talkin’ bout me?” Then it sort of loped off into the woods.

I was just about to unleash the dog at the field when I saw a big wild turkey in the middle of the field. I thought I shouldn’t stress out the turkey, so I kept my dog on leash. Only then did I notice three little turkeys behind her. Good thing. It was sunny at the moment, and now there is a thunderstorm. Nature comes close sometimes.

Good for you!

Locally there have been reports of unleashed dogs destroying mallard nests.

I read somewhere that a lot of human-bear encounters occur when an unleashed dog encounters a bear and starts annoying said bear . The annoyed bear then responds by going after the dog. The now threatened dog then runs back to its human. With a highly aggravated bear following right behind it.

‘Learning on the job’: NY Times investigation reveals Trump judge’s lack of experience

“A Bloomberg Law database listing 224 criminal cases that were assigned to Cannon reviewed by The Times found that just four went to trial, all of which were largely routine cases, meaning the judge presiding over arguably one of the most important criminal cases in U.S. history is going into the trial with a total of 14 days experience trying criminal cases, the report said.”

It’s amazing the expertise one finds here!

Back in more innocent days, when I grew up, groundhogs were generally considered pests rather than media stars. And Punxsutawney was mostly known for the local clouds of biting blackflies. (Aka ‘punkies’.)

I was, however, once ‘charged’ by a groundhog. It folded its middle to make it seem larger. Ran straight at me. At about 6’ distance it ran wide of me and headed straight for my back porch. Which it proceeded to hide under. I did not interfere because I was too busy laughing and kind of curious to see what it was going to do. I suspect that a neighbor or passing car did it in shortly thereafter as I did not see it again.
