Another possible motivation: Putin was advised that his economy was steering off a cliff. What is the best way for him to distract from it and blame the faltering economy on Western Sanctions?

He also could’ve subscribed to the notion that war stimulates the economy. Which really only works if you don’t end up getting your ass handed to you in the long run.
