Large scale social changes will no doubt be influenced by events beyond the choices of day to day politics in American government. My desire as an American (not as a member of a political party) is that we all work to get along peaceably with each other, with an eye to building a future in which we will want to live.

Hard to disagree with that. It comes down to the methods people think will bring about a better tomorrow. I think it’s remaining true to the American ideals of personal liberty and capitalism- that society will evolve on its own, while government protects the process by which we can all live together in relative peace.
