re: #279 freetoken

Does anyone know where the notion of “Purgatory” comes from in the Catholic faith? Was it a scheme to get money? I don’t think that it’s official doctrine anymore, but not sure about that, having been lapsed for many years now. I remember as a child reciting “Glory be to God the Father, the Son..” a whole bunch of times. With each prayer (or “ejaculation” as they were called) you got a certain number of days off your Purgatory sentence. The number of days varied with the prayer and how many times you said it. There were cards where the trade was made explicit, like “100 days indulgence”. Kind of like trading cards.
