I would submit a caveat that reverses your statement. If most of them are doing the same things and they’re sharing the gains of those things, THEN it becomes unlikely the top boss does not know what the top level trusted employees are doing.

But in my case, they weren’t. For instance, at the same time I had a 12 man crew on Marthas Vineyard I had an 8 man crew working some small towns just south of Albany NY
They ran totally independent of each other (as did every other crew I had).

Hell,,, most of my managers never even met each other
