I took a vacation to Canada earlier this year to visit family. While there, I took a walk around my neighborhood. During that walk, I passed by a man clearly singing in Arabic. He seemed to be in a good mood. No one so much as gave the man a second glance.

I couldn’t help but wonder if this same situation played out in the Southern U.S. where I now live how different the reaction would have been. There’s practically no middle eastern population down here, it’s primarily white, black, Latino and Asian. I’m sure that man would have some haters on him in no time.

I am proud of my country for being so diverse and multicultural. That’s how a strong society should be.

Our town in Baja Alabama has a small Reform temple and a small mosque. No one is being stupid about it yet. (We’ve had a public klezmer concert but no one is singing suras on the streetcorner.)
