re: #48 Obdicut

“My country, right or wrong,” is a thing that no patriot would think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying, “My mother, drunk or sober.”

Well, true in both cases, although some people get worn down enough to leave either, or both.

The exact quote that the ‘right or wrong’ folks are always mangling is: “Our country, right or wrong. When right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be put right.”

The idea that one loves a country more when one is absolutely blind to its faults is insane. It’s also a rather transparent lie, since the Palinites are always bitching and moaning about everything that’s gone wrong with the country, and talking about how they want to fix it up and make it like it should be, but would never dream of saying that their complaints about America losing her way mean they love her the less.
