I'm almost tempted to go in on release day, before the local Gamestop opens, and see how many guys my age or older are there, yellowed reserve slip in hand. Then go online that night and watch the reviewers take turns tearing it a new one.

I posted a link last night of Easter eggs and spoilers. There are some very interesting plot points that I missed while playing the game. I think it's very cool that the developers actually hid some very interesting story lines instead of beating their audience over the head with it. Read up on the game after you're finished playing. I found it really interesting.

I'm pretty sure that Gearbox (company that bought the rights from 3D Realms and is releasing it) did so more out of the desire of the fandom to see the game finally released than any real belief that it's going to be the best damned game ever. To quote a prominent game reviewer:
"I just hope 3D Realms understands that if this doesn't turn out to be history's greatest contribution to human culture and the cure for at least one type of cancer then I and every other reviewer on earth are going to saw its bollocks off."

Yeah, only downside is that Yahtzee, as he has lamented on more than one occasion, is hampered by the Aussie gov't's almost draconian restrictions on video game imports. Somehow, I get the impression that he's gonna be almost forced to smuggle in a copy of DNF through the black market in order to play it.

G.K. Chesterton is not someone that whackjobs should cite in support of themselves.
"It is true that there is a thing crudely called charity, which means charity to the deserving poor, but charity to the deserving is not charity at all, but justice."
"There are two ways to get enough. One is to continue to accumulate more and more. The other is to desire less."
"My country, right or wrong," is a thing that no patriot would think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying, "My mother, drunk or sober."
"The poor have sometimes objected to being governed badly; the rich have always objected to being governed at all."
And last:

That one is my personal favorite.

Well, true in both cases, although some people get worn down enough to leave either, or both.
The exact quote that the 'right or wrong' folks are always mangling is: "Our country, right or wrong. When right, to be kept right; when wrong, to be put right."
The idea that one loves a country more when one is absolutely blind to its faults is insane. It's also a rather transparent lie, since the Palinites are always bitching and moaning about everything that's gone wrong with the country, and talking about how they want to fix it up and make it like it should be, but would never dream of saying that their complaints about America losing her way mean they love her the less.

Set in a phantasmagoric London where policemen are poets and anarchists camouflage themselves as, well, anarchists, his 1907 novel offers up one highly colored enigma after another. If that weren't enough, the author also throws in an elephant chase and a hot-air-balloon pursuit in which the pursuers suffer from "the persistent refusal of the balloon to follow the roads, and the still more persistent refusal of the cabmen to follow the balloon."

Chesterton did not like rich people. At all.
"Among the rich you will never find a really generous man even by accident. They may give their money away, but they will never give themselves away; they are egotistic, secretive, dry as old bones. To be smart enough to get all that money you must be dull enough to want it."

Right now, American manufacturing is struggling to fill 200,000 vacant positions. There are 450,000 openings in trades, transportation and utilities. The skills gap is real, and it's getting wider. In Alabama, a third of all skilled tradesmen are over 55. They're retiring fast, and no one is there to replace them.
From my link above. If these figures are correct, why aren't they being tauted by the MSM? Why aren't they an election issue?
Perhaps the skills needed for the jobs described need to taught at Universities in order to be accepted.

The men that worked for England
They have their graves at home:
And bees and birds of England
About the cross can roam.
But they that fought for England,

Alas, alas for England
They have their graves afar.
And they that rule in England,
In stately conclave met,
Alas, alas for England,
They have no graves as yet.

Construction, plumbers, carpenters, are the jobs of the future.
Skilled trades will always be in demand (though income obviously varies from time to time.)
Machinists, welders, woodworkers of all types, masons, etc. are needed. Not day laborers who get put in those jobs short time and often do sub-quality work (which I've seen around here quite a bit), but rather people who spend their lives perfecting a particular craft.
The problem I see, and this is one of my favorite soap boxes, is that Americans as consumers are too willing to settle for low quality. Low quality service and low quality products.
Low quality food, too.

I was a wall paper hanger for a while. I loved it, but the body didn't hold up.
The only problem with the trades is that many wear out the body. One has to have a good plan B. You can make a good buck for the first 25 years, but you have to have planned and saved to finance Plan B.
THe upside is that people in middle age are choosing to retrain and reeducate themselves now for totally different careers. There doesn't seem to be the barriers there used to be. A friend of mine just finished nursing school. AT 45 she is an RN and has a whole new life.

The rich and famous used to always have their shoes custom made. Often women would have two pairs of the same shoe, so if one got dirty during the evening, she could change it.

My friend Vinnie was a shoemaker. A Vietnam vet, too.
He was kind of beat up, and a little wild. Had a voice on him like Tom Waits had been gargling salt. But I really liked the guy, he was a total sweetheart. He was a customer at the bar I bartended at and, while a lush, got happier the drunker he got, which is far preferrable to morose or violent.
Anyway, I decided to introduce him to my mom when she visited me there.
And of course, my mom just said "Hi, Vinnie." He'd been her shoemaker for the past five years, and the only person she'd trust to repair her Italian leather bags.
It was nifty having two of my worlds meat like that.

That's why we have to get rid of those Big Brother child-labor laws. God made those fingers tiny for a reason.
Girls used to learn to spin as soon as they could sit-upright. Takes a lot of time and little fingers to make a enough skeins to have a new sweater or blanket.
Lots of old drawings show the little girls (actually every girl) with a distaff. Boys chopped firewood and girls spun.
Very time consuming. I tried it, but the shoulders couldn't do it. I did find it soothing, rather therapuedic tho.

In 20th century America that term became used, but because people only went to shoe stores to buy retail and thus the specific terms were lost.
Soft shoes (i.e., made of leather, not the wooden sandals and similar objects) were made by cordwainers, while traditionally cobblers fixed shoes by attaching new soles, etc.
The difference lay primarily in that the cordwainer knows how to make a last, the necessary tool for a shoe manufacture.

If I got a do-over, I would love to either be a stone mason or a blacksmith.
The weird thing is, when I was getting out of high school, I was interesting in training for a trade. I really hated academics, and I like the idea of having a job where you actually did something. I was thinking about housefitting trades, mostly, maybe painting.
I was absolutely shut down by parents, teachers, everyone. It was so stupid it didn't even bear thinking about. I was SMART. I was a GIRL. I was MIDDLE CLASS. (My father said that with the fury of the newly arrived, and my college counselor with total ignorance--woman asked me if I would need to apply for financial aid. Jesus Christ, I was at a public high school in San Francisco, what did she THINK?) I would go to college, get an English degree, get some kind of a job and....MAGICAL PROFIT!!!
If I had it to do again, I'd tell myself to do it. I probably would have ended up getting a degree in the end, but crap, especially given how I had no idea how to market myself in and after college, I bought one hell of an expensive qualifier for grad school.

Years ago I tried, around here in SD. From my research I found 1 guy in Tijuana who supposedly could (but I didn't go with him). None in SD county. Supposedly there was a guy up in Hollywood who made shoes for the famous.

Drop spindle spinning is quite fun. And yes, in a lot of communities, women and girls did it with every spare moment from dawn to dusk. There is one delicious bit of medieval illumination that shows a woman working a drop spindle during sex, which I suppose is the equivalent of watching TV, or going on playing Tetris while he knocks himself out.

I'm not entirely sure that the guy who reportedly shouted 'Allahu akbar' while trying to get into the cockpit wasn't, at least in his own mind, a terrorist. The family thinks he's having a nervous breakdown, and the court's asked for a psych eval. There's certainly no evidence that he was part of a plot at this time, he seems to have just gone completely nuts.

Some friends of mine hand out pro-Israel literature in Berkeley, at UC. They've had all sorts of reponses, including, famously, one guy who stood in front of the table and screamed "Allahu akbar!" over and over at them.
WHen I heard this, I had to comment that I totally agree with the sentiment ITSELF, but when someone's screaming it in your face in such a setting, it's probably not meant to be a religious statement. Or friendly, in any way.
They've also had a guy who lifted his shirt to reveal a big swastika tattooed on his belly, assorted flyer grabbers...it's Sproul Plaza. What can one do?

My favorite was the freak-out over the guy--a Turk? can't recall--who got up on the altar in St. Peter's and started dancing. I think it may have been a modified moonwalk.
The security team ran over and explained that it is not allowed to moonwalk on the altar, and so the guy got down and let them lead him out.
Pam had a whole elaborate thing about how this was a clear-cut case of Muslim triumphalism, back in the day, when Muslims sacked a Christian city, the first thing they did was moonwalk on the Cathedral altar...it was insane.
The guy was clearly a little touched.
