I don’t like minimum sentences, nor do I like our entire prison system which is punitive, rather than rehabilitative. But that’s the system we have, and making allowances for some people and not for others isn’t just. I do prefer fines for stuff like this, but you can get prison time for selling an ounce of weed, which has far less capacity for death and disaster than this woman’s actions did.

What kind of distinction we make matters. Intent, prior convictions, actual harm done or the lack thereof are helpful to justice. That gun vs weed thing is irrelevant to her case, as we have no overarching guideline tying such different kinds of crimes and sentences together based on potential harm.
