re: #79 Targetpractice

As the article notes, we heard the same BS about “corporate info” and “trade secrets” from Jimmy Johns when they were found out for enforcing non-competes against the guys making sandwiches, barring them from even thinking of going to work for Subway or any other sandwich shop within 2 miles of their former employer for 2 years.

It pretty much is the way it looks: Kathy killed this bill because Wall St and other major firms in NYC breathed down her neck about closing their wallets if she didn’t allow them to keep the young bucks on the top floor from thinking about running to the competition.

And again, if non-competes were at all necessary to create a business environment that fosters innovation then Silicon Valley would have never developed and rapidly, radically transformed the way the entire world operates, because these kinds of clauses have always been illegal in California.

They’re obvious tools of protectionism for existing employers, who are essentially rent seeking by shackling their employees in order to stifle competition which prevents innovation instead of fostering it.
