Bruce Willis said it best: “It’s not a Christmas movie, it’s a Bruce Willis movie.”

Miracle on 34th Street is actually a Valentine’s Day story that takes place in December.

Marjorie Taylor Greene Says She Got ‘Swatted’ at Home With Family on Christmas

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said Monday that she had been the target of a “swatting” attempt, with someone allegedly reporting a fake crime at her home in the hopes of provoking a heavy police response.

“This is like the 8th time,” she tweeted. “On Christmas with my family here.” Despite the alleged incident, Greene added, “my family and I are in joyous spirits celebrating the birth of our savior Jesus Christ!”

The Georgia Republican added that she appreciated her local police department, calling them “the GREATEST” and adding that they “shouldn’t have to deal with this.”

Prince Andrew is said to be ‘totally tormented’ as he braces himself for the scandal over his links to paedophile Jeffrey Epstein to reignite in the New Year.

The Mail on Sunday has learned the Duke of York’s name will appear alongside those of scores of Epstein’s powerful friends - some of whom have not previously been publicly identified - when a tranche of court documents are published.

The prospect of once again facing intense scrutiny over his friendship with Epstein is said to have plunged Andrew into deep despair ahead of Christmas, which he is expected to spend in Sandringham with his brother King Charles and other Royals.

So my son was with Zedie in the hospital when he had to leave to pick up the Chinese takeout that he ordered for our dinner.

Z said “Please bring me some!” So considering what he was given to eat my son went back with the Chinese food. I hope he was able to sneak it past the nurses.

So is Ronna ROMNEY McDaniel the next to be thrown off the Trump Train…with Laura Looney Loomer leading the mob?

Now, Loomer is calling out McDaniel for a fundraising attempt on Christmas eve.

“While everyone has been busy enjoying Christmas, you may have missed this. And I’m sure that’s why it was sent out on Christmas Eve…. But check it out! Look what [GOP chairwoman] sent out on Christmas Eve,” Loomer wrote. “I mean, talk about being disrespectful to President Trump and the GOP base.”

The post includes a fundraising image purporting to show McDaniel offering a poll in which the options are Chris Christie, Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Vivek Ramaswamy and, finally, Donald Trump.

“Notice she put Trump’s name last… And then asked for donations. Unreal. This is why everyone hates [GOP chairwoman],” Loomer wrote.

In the comments, Trump supporters appeared to largely side with Loomer over McDaniel, who could potentially face criminal charges for a phone call in which she and Trump reportedly pressured county election workers.

“Ronna needs to go!” one user wrote on Christmas.

“Not one single dime while Ronna is still in charge,” said another verified MAGA account. “If the GOP wants to win, they need to [remove Ronna].”

Trump supporter Jean Easter sided with the financial boycott.

“I will donate to a SPECIFIC CANDIDATE’S COFFERS and NOT A DIME to the GOP PARTY as long as Ronna is Chairwoman,” Easter wrote Monday. “IMO she is running election interference JUST LIKE THE DEMOCRATS COURT CASES by refusing to allocate funds to the People’s choices, just to the elites’ favorites.”

It’s a scary thing to realize that a memory changes each time your recall it.

This is why testimony from memory holds so little weight in judicial matters.

And why we, anyeone, should have a healthy skepticism when people talk about remembering this or that thing from their childhood.

I can recall various items from my childhood, but I am also sure that the earliest ones I remember have now been sort of put into a fuzzy album in my mind, and I am not sure of the details.

I think I know the details, but over the past 6 decades I have remembered a few early memories so much that I am sure they have somehow been edited.

Memories of the time Dad and I drove up to Potter County in Pennsylvania to see the point where the Allegheny River starts.

It’s source is the only Triple-Divide East of the Rockies

3 1/2 miles from the sign is the source of the Allegheny.

Hard to believe that tiny stream begins there and eventually merges with the Monongahela at Pittsburgh…

That video didn’t talk at all about what I learned about memory in the past few years.

The reason you can remember some old stuff really well, is that you have thought about it many times since, and each time, you make another memory in another location. The video contradicted that, saying the original location of the memory is reinforced. I don’t know if that was mice or people. Repetition is key to memory, as language learners do.

What I think I figured out about how the brain works over the past several years, is that there is more Unknown than there is Known.

I suppose that is a matter for contention.

The video suggests that new brain cells, as they develop new connections with other cells, are part of the process of forgetting.

A memory of old that we keep reliving may end up programming new connections, not necessarily new cells.

I suppose I could look at the five papers listed in the video description, but I’m too lazy today to do that.

Hopefully you Christmas involved less shit than John Cole’s:

Drove to the mother-inlaws today, with Thurston on a trial run, and he mostly passed. I mean he got there and back. Everything in between, was, well, a shitshow.

Got there, and her mother had an enormous spread of roast beef, mashed potatoes, green beans, lasagne, etc., enough food for an army. While we were getting this ready, at some point Thurston took a big ole steamer on the tile in the kitchen, and Joelle and I BOTH stepped in it and tracked it all through the house. The next thirty minutes was then spent cleaning carpets and plotting Thurston’s death. At some point Joelle yelled at Thurston “YOU JUST WANTED TO BE THE STAR OF YOUR OWN SHITMAS.”

I was trying to find the story he wrote but finally gave up. Basically, he proposed to a long time friend to the tune of “we’ve always liked each other and now that we’re in our 50s let’s get married” and she said yes. New York’s governor vetoed a bill days before Christmas that would have banned noncompete agreements, which restrict workers’ ability to leave their job for a role with a rival business.

Gov. Kathy Hochul, who said she tried to work with the Legislature on a “reasonable compromise” this year, called the bill “a one-size-fits-all-approach” for New York companies legitimately trying to retain top talent.

“I continue to recognize the urgent need to restrict non-compete agreements for middle-class and low-wage workers, and am open to future legislation that achieves the right balance,” she wrote in a veto letter released Saturday.

If you’re “trying to retain top talent,” how about paying them more or offering better benefits instead of threatening them with a lawsuit if they even think for a second about finding such at another employer? An annual raise, a fat bonus, paid vacation/sick leave, and so many other possible ways to show you support these people and wish for them to stay with you instead of legal threats to ruin their lives if they leave you.

The veto is a blow to labor groups, who have long argued that the agreements hurt workers and stifle economic growth. The Federal Trade Commission had also sent a letter to Hochul in November, urging her to sign the bill and saying that the agreements can harm innovation and prevent new businesses from forming in the state.

But in recent months, the legislation had come under fierce attack by Wall Street and top business groups in New York. They argued the agreements are necessary to protect investment strategies and keep highly-paid workers from leaving their companies with prized inside information and working for an industry rival.

While the agreements are often associated with top executives, about 1 in 5 American workers — nearly 30 million people — are now bound by noncompete agreements, according to the Federal Trade Commission.

Poland’s new government took a public news channel off the air on Wednesday and dismissed executives from state media to restore “impartiality”, the culture ministry said, as Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s reform drive faced its first big test.

Tusk’s pro-European Union coalition took power last week from the nationalist Law and Justice (PiS) party, which critics say damaged judicial independence, soured European Union relations and turned state-owned media into an outlet for propaganda during its eight years in office.

And again, if non-competes were at all necessary to create a business environment that fosters innovation then Silicon Valley would have never developed and rapidly, radically transformed the way the entire world operates, because these kinds of clauses have always been illegal in California.

They’re obvious tools of protectionism for existing employers, who are essentially rent seeking by shackling their employees in order to stifle competition which prevents innovation instead of fostering it.

Last night I was looking at that photo of the bouquet I posted yesterday and suddenly had to chuckle. I wonder if the person who put it together knew anything of classical rose symbolism or just thought “these look pretty together”. Probably the latter…

Red of course is the classic lover’s rose that signifies enduring passion. OTHO white symbolizes humility and innocence. Not too sure about the humility part as teens, but we were both pretty much on that side of the innocence/experience equation 😉

The things we learn in order to write bad poetry as an angsty teen and then remember decades later. 🤣 Good thing I learned my art was with a camera instead.

They want you to connect “non-compete” with “corporate espionage,” that they’re there to keep some fiendish fellows from being hired just long enough to steal all the companies vital “secrets” before running back to the competition. The reality is that the guys most likely to be slapped with a non-compete lawsuit are managers and supervisors who are fed up with being exploited by low salaried jobs and want to leave but know any jobs they might apply for will turn them away once they see the weeks/months long delay before they can start.

2024 GOP Hopeful Faces Backlash After Sharing Christmas Photo Showing Ornaments of Democrats in Nooses (msn.com)

A Republican congressional candidate expressed regret after posting an image of a Christmas tree decorated with ornaments showing Democrats in nooses.

The image shared by former West Virginia state lawmaker Derrick Evans, which was quickly deleted, showed tiny versions of politicians like President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Barack Obama, and Rep. Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., hanging from nooses. A Trump ornament looks on and appears to be approving the hangings with his hand raised.

I still remember the E3 when Microsoft and Sony previewed the XBone and PS4 respectively. Microsoft came out during an otherwise bumbling performance about the XBO being “multimedia” to tell gamers they’d need an always-on internet connection so the OS could call home or else it would brick itself. Then Sony came out hours later to announce that the PS4 didn’t need to get mommy’s permission to play games. No points will be awarded for guessing who was treated as the winner of that console generation before the first units had sold.

Small study (46 participants - so big grain of salt needed) Published in Frontiers In Psychology, 3 groups (3-D Video Gaming (n=14; played “Super Mario Odyssey”), active control “CogPack” (n=16; trained on a computer program); and standard treatment (n=16; psychotherapy and medication).

Results showed that the percentage of participants with high levels of depressive symptoms decreased the most in the “Super Mario Odyssey” group. Their number almost halved. The decreases in the other two groups were smaller and insufficient to exclude the possibility that they were due to random variations in answers instead of treatment effects.

That won’t be limited to electric cars. Do you know how complex and integrated the computer systems are in your gas vehicle? My Ford Fiesta’s computer will very infrequently get a computer code that causes an engine warning and it kills the cruise control. But, it clears if I turn off the car and turn it back on. It has something to do with the control computer.

Snooping around on the interwebs I found a price list for Rollei, the maker of _the_ original high end Twin Lens Reflex Cameras. I own a Rolleicord III a “cheap” “amateur” model from, say, 1953~54. The full bore Rolleiflex of the era was $285 (call it $3500 today) and generally owned by pros who a) could write them off on their taxes b) get their employers to pay for them and c) rode them hard and put them away wet. The Rolleicord series was intended for the hardcore amateur who still had a full wallet. Doctors, lawyers, etc. as it was $150 with the federal excise tax, or about $1600 after inflation. About like a good lower end Nikon Z today. Not Horrible but not cheap either. You wanted it if you bought it and probably pampered it. Might be why so many Rolleicords and their leather cases are in pretty good shape decades later … 😎

Most petrol-based cars have a “limp home” mode, which will get you to your next destination. They don’t suffer catastrophic failures unless there is a major mechanical failure. In this case of this Ford vehicle, Ford screwed the pooch on not being able to roll back to the previous software image in order to get the vehicle back on the road.

EVs are supposed to have far fewer components vs. a fossil fueled vehicle to make them more reliable - but if a software upgrade bricks a car, that’s a huge problem.

There are certain industries where non-competes are really important. I don’t know how broad the bill that got vetoed was, but in industries like law firms, any sort of consultancy, financial management etc. Companies go through a lot of effort to bring in clients and then assign a consultant or attorney to the client, the client builds a relationship with that person not necessarily the company, you can’t have them running off and bringing all those clients with them.

If Winchell’s had an iron clad non-compete, they wouldn’t have lost ground in southern California donut wars.

That’s exactly how movie studios kept a lock on actors up until the 70s i think the time was, and it kept actors’ salaries low while the studios made all the profits.

Let the law firms adjust how they handle clients. They don’t own employees.

I worked as a contractor for most of my career, at Ford, GM & their suppliers. Only once was I asked to sign a non-compete and I walked out of the interview.

Later they called me back and said they would waive the non-compete, but I did not take that job.

Good for you. To me it’s a red flag about what they think of their employees.

Companies don’t own employees. Want to require them to work for two years, pay them a starting bonus with a non-leave cause for that time.

There are already laws about what you can take with you and share with another company. If a big client wants to follow their favorite employee, then maybe you should have tried harder to keep them, or maybe the client wasn’t really worth it after all.

There are carve outs in the law.

California has a long history of disfavoring noncompetes. Under California Business and Professions Code section 16600, every contractual covenant that restrains anyone from engaging in a lawful profession, trade, or business of any kind is void, except under limited statutory exceptions. Those narrow exceptions include the sale of a business, the dissolution of a partnership, or upon the dissolution or termination of interests in a limited liability company. Ultimately, most noncompetes with California employees are void.

When passing SB 699, the legislature explained that many employers still use noncompete agreements for their deterrent effect, which has a chilling effect on employee mobility. As such, the law prohibits employers from entering into noncompete agreements that are void under California law. In fact, an employer that enters into or seeks to enforce an unlawful noncompete will commit a civil violation once the new law takes effect on January 1, 2024.

lawyers change firms all the time, sometimes willingly, sometimes not so willingly. yes, there are personal relationships developed between lawyers and clients and sometimes when a lawyer leaves a firm, a client might choose to go with them. but every state bar has rules of ethics that apply to the scenario of a lawyer leaving a firm and how that is handled.

I know, I know, it is clickbait.

A Tesla engineer was attacked by a robot during a brutal and bloody malfunction at the company’s Giga Texas factory near Austin.

Two witnesses watched in horror as their fellow employee was attacked by the machine designed to grab and move freshly cast aluminum car parts.

The robot had pinned the man, who was then programming software for two disabled Tesla robots nearby, before sinking its metal claws into the worker’s back and arm, leaving a ‘trail of blood’ along the factory surface.

Embattled rapper Kanye West—whose career essentially imploded over his repeated antisemitic remarks—now claims he’s very sorry for all the hate.

“I sincerely apologize to the Jewish community for any unintended outburst caused by my words or actions, it was not my intention to hurt or disrespect, and I deeply regret any pain I may have caused,” he said Tuesday in a statement written in Hebrew on his recently re-activated Instagram page.

“I am committed to starting with myself and learning from this experience to ensure greater sensitivity and understanding in the future. Your forgiveness is important to me, and I am committed to making amends and promoting unity.”

After first 15 minutes of first episode, texted him as to whether this was similar to Looper. However, after watching the entire series, realized it was just a simplified Dark, a series I abandoned when the third season came out, and I realized I would have to watch everything again because it was too complicated to figure out the story line. The problem with Bodies is that it made no sense because there was no logical way for the loop to start in the first place.

Before I started working there, my last employer(was there for over 30 years and retired from them) had a hotshot actuarial consultant who spent his last few months talking with other consultants about cases that were not his, copied a lot of records, and then handed in his resignation with the intention of starting his own firm. Let’s just say the head of the company called him, demanded all the records back and threatened legal action. The company won that argument.

Maybe it’s the double translation into Hebrew and back again (which was a weird choice because most American Jews aren’t functionally literate in Hebrew but with the exception of a tiny number of very recent immigrants almost all of them are fluent in English) but it read to me like he was saying the outburst wasn’t his, but was accidentally caused by him.

I took it to just be a tortured non-apology, “I’m sorry people got mad when I grinned like a goddamned creep and bragged that I could get away with saying ‘antisemitic things’”
