Tech Note: More Embedded Videos in Comments

Registered users have been able to embed video clips in their LGF comments for several months; today I added a new format to the list of embeddable video types: Vimeo.com.

To embed a Vimeo clip in a comment, go to the page at the Vimeo website that has the video, and copy the page’s URL (not the embed code!), then paste that URL directly into a comment, on its own line — like this:

Vimeo has some really interesting, highly creative content, featuring award-winning animations like this one:

India plans to build 100 warships

India has plans to add about 100 warships to its navy over the next decade as it seeks to modernise its armed forces, and develop its low-cost shipbuilding capabilities.

Captain Alok Bhatnagar, director of naval plans at India’s ministry of defence, said on Thursday that 32 warships and submarines were under construction in the country’s shipyards. Work on 75 more ships, including aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and amphibious vessels, would begin over 10 years.

Sure, we've been signing nuclear and military agreements with India like mad over the past couple of years, and that is certainly the goal, shipping engineering work over there, betcha they plan to sell most of this announced output to the US - or other highest bidders. Then maybe they will keep a few and hire out as mercenaries? Of course they did OK off the Somali coast a couple of months ago. But, could we depend on them for anything serious, that did not involve India's own self-interest as much as ours?

Could we count on India with us against China? Doubt it.

That's about like counting Saudi Arabia with us against Iran. Might look like something on paper, and have some diplomatic effect, but military, come on now.

File under How Much More Can We Redistribute:
IRS Releases New Data

The IRS released data today on the distribution of income taxes. It shows that the highest-earning taxpayers shoulder a considerable burden of the federal income tax.

According to the IRS, the top 1 percent of taxpayers paid over 40 percent of all federal income taxes in 2007. That is a higher share than the bottom 95 percent of taxpayers combined! They paid just over 39 percent.

The top 1 percent, those earning over $410,000, consists of 1.4 million taxpayers, while the bottom 95 percent contains 134 million.

In 2000, before the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts that some claim disproportionately benefited the rich, the top 1 percent paid less than 38 percent of income taxes while the bottom 95 paid almost 44 percent. Since the tax cuts, the top 1 percent’s share increased over 2 percentage points while the bottom 95 percent’s share decreased 5 percentage points. Those that argue the tax cuts solely benefited the rich are mistaken.

Islamist sect leader shot dead after 600 killed in Nigeria siege

Nigerian security forces claimed to have defeated a well-armed Islamist sect after four days of bloody fighting that left hundreds dead and forced thousands to flee their homes in the northern town of Maiduguri.

Army soldiers captured Mohamed Yusuf, the leader of the sect, and took him to a barracks. He was later transferred to the police and shot dead in their custody. A spokesman said Mr Yusuf had tried to escape.

More than a thousand Nigerian soldiers were sent to reinforce police and troops were deployed in Maiduguri, Borno state, where the heaviest fighting has taken place. Military helicopters hovered as artillery shells rained down and tanks and armoured cars laid siege to Mr Yusuf’s home and mosque.

After storming the mosque yesterday, the army claimed to have killed at least 200 militants, bringing the total dead to about 600. The bodies of barefooted young men lay in the streets of Maiduguri but it was thought initially that the leader of the group had fled with hundreds of his followers.

Hey, a government program which is looking at cost overruns. What are the odd of that?

'Cash for Clunkers' Program Blasts Through Funds

DETROIT -- The head of the National Auto Dealers Association said on Thursday that he believes most of the $1 billion set aside for "cash for clunkers" incentives has already been used up, due to the surge in new-car sales in the first days of the program.

"We feel that we're much closer to exhausting that $1 billion than anyone thought," NADA President John McEleny said in a telephone interview. "We're not telling dealers what we should or shouldn't do but that we think the billion might be close to exhausted if not exhausted already."

Mr. McEleney said his conclusion is based on the results of an informal email poll of NADA members asking how many clunker deals they have already submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and how many others they have that are still to be processed.

Mr. McEleney added he personally will at least temporarily stop accepting clunker deals on Friday at the dealerships he owns until he is sure the clunkers program has enough money to pay for the incentives.

And it says:

Through late Wednesday, 22,782 vehicles had been purchased through the program and nearly $96 million had been spent. But dealers raised concerns of large backlogs in the system, prompting the suspension.

re: #100 Van Helsing

I agree. Something is fishy here. They're suspending it with just about 10% of the program's $1 billion used up. That means 90% is still available, and yet they think that they have to suspend it to clear the backlog? Their systems couldn't handle the demand? Even though they could have estimated exactly how much maximum demand could be anticipated.

They knew how many vehicles could be purchased with the maximum rebate - $4,500 - which would be 222,222 vehicles.

If all were $3,500, they would have had to handle all of 285,715 vehicles.

Total US sales annually for all cars sold? 20 million.

Hey! There is really important matters at hand!

President Barack Obama
The White House
Washington, D.C.
July 30, 2009

Dear Mr. President,

Sir Paul McCartney is in town this weekend and has launched an initiative called "Meat-Free Mondays" to help stave off climate change, lessen the suffering of animals, and promote a diet healthier than the artery-clogging, obesity-inducing one that is a major cause of the soaring health-care costs and worker absenteeism in this country.

As you no doubt know, on October 5, 1947, in the first televised White House address, President Truman asked Americans to refrain from eating meat on Tuesdays and poultry on Thursdays to help stockpile grain for starving people in Europe. Today, the number of starving people in the world is on a par with the number of obese people in the U.S., and a restriction on meat and dairy-product intake could help tip those scales for the better.

Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, the city of Ghent in Belgium, parts of Israel, and, this fall, many schools in the U.K. are among those embracing the concept of "Meat-Free Monday." It's one-seventh of where we should be, but it's a great start. If you institute this program in the White House, it will be a giant step forward in transforming it to a green house, and it will set a wonderful example for people nationwide?or worldwide?who look to you for leadership when it comes to a kinder, environmentally friendlier, and more health-conscious approach to life.

Respectfully yours,

Ingrid E. Newkirk

President, PETA

Note to self: Make sure surf and turf is on Monday's menu.

For the remainder of the day, Biden occupied himself with hosing off his car, giving the side doors an extra coat of wax, and throwing out a variety of items from beneath its front seats, including crumpled-up fast food wrappers, a number of soft packs of Doral kings, an issue of Cheri magazine from 1991, and Senate bill S. 486.
