We are governed at all levels by America's luckiest children, sons and daughters of the abundance, and they call themselves optimists but they're not optimists—they're unimaginative. They don't have faith, they've just never been foreclosed on. They are stupid and they are callous, and they don't mind it when people become disheartened. They don't even notice.

I don't care who wrote it...there is good cause for that kind of pessimism...if cap and trade passes, along with this crazy health care bill, it would take years and probably two conservative administrations to pick those apart and reverse the legislation, even if it can be...I don't see things the way your everyday liberal democrat does...Medicare/Medicaid/Social Security alone is an impending disaster that is irreversible as we know it...a bad economy that gets hammered with a rise in energy costs and you can kiss good bye forever your daddy's America...yes, America will survive but what will it look like...speed up the hope and change please

Once there's any manner of government health care, from what we have now, to any convoluted mish-mash travesty this congress comes up with, all the way up to full fledged CommieCare™, you cant get rid of it. It will be too entrenched and too many people will depend on it making it a "3rd Rail" or a "Hill to Die On" as far as politics are concerned. It will be a win for the leftist agenda even though it leads to massive problems which be a beneficial crisis to which the solution is more governmental control, never less.
In the future we will be talking about what the government should do to "fix" healthcare, we will not be talking about rolling back the governmental fiasco that worsened the "crisis".

Here's a horror story for many.
Now financier George Soros is announcing a $50 million effort to speed things along. This week Soros is gathering some of the leading practitioners of the market-skeptic school, who were marginalized during the era of "free-market fundamentalism," among them Nobelists Joseph Stiglitz, George Akerlof, Michael Spence, and Sir James Mirrlees. He's also creating an "Institute for New Economic Thinking" to make research grants, convene symposiums, and establish a journal, all in an effort to take back the economics profession from the champions of free-market zealotry who have dominated it for decades, and to correct the failures of decades of market deregulation. Soros hopes matching funds will bring the total endowment up to $200 million. "Economics has failed not only to predict and explain what happened but has also failed to protect society," says Robert Johnson, a former managing director at Soros Fund Management, who will direct the new institute. "That's what the crisis revealed. The paradigm has failed. There is no guidance."

Just in case people are not familiar with Soros, here's a primer.

We won't be going to medicare for all, though. Private insurance will still exist. After a certain point the private plans will have to compete against the public option in the Health Insurance Exchange. (for individuals purchasing coverage, that is).
They're starting to use the term 'medicare for all' because it's a way of characterising the public option in a way that they hope will sound less frightening to people, since the term 'public option' has been vilified and (the thinking is) since people are already familiar with Medicare, they'll be more at ease with the idea of a public option if it's presented as extending medicare.
the flipside, of course, is that those who don't like medicare or are worried about its problems will say, why extend something that's already broken?

Why indeed.
Except that it is already known the healthcare "fix" will lead to more problems. Then they will propose another "fix" that sounds quite sensible considering the trouble, and on and on tightening the noose of governmental control until it is complete.
Each minor step seeming innocuous and an answer to a real problem. Each minor step leading to new problems to which the answer is always More Government.
Eventually we have a monster like the NHS and there is no going back.

I do not pretend to know what the solution is.
I do agree that our present form of medical PAYMENTS needs to be fixed.
When my appendix ruptured, I spent 5 days in the hospital.
Because the paperwork got messed up, I saw the "actual" bills, over $40,000. When the paperwork got sorted out, the insurance company paid (IIRC) $14,000.
Now, conceivably $14,000 over time, would be something I might have managed to pay. $40,000 plus? NO WAY.

I still would like to see FIRST, before we get thousands of pages of legislation to "fix the system", a list of WHAT exactly is not working, reasons why, and possible solutions (plural, notice - potential solutions) for each thing.
I don't know how the American people can be expected to judge any proposed solution, until we know exactly what the problems are, what's causing them, and workable alternatives.
In other words, it seems to me we've begun this debate in the MIDDLE, instead of at the beginning.

That we're likely to disagree on. It'll lead to new problems, in the same way that any legislation so massive always does. I think providing coverage to the uninsured and underinsured needs to be done, and that the system needs reform. The questions are about how to best reform it. I havent read any versions of the proposals since HR3200 so I'm not entirely up to speed on everything, and I'm not enough of a policy wonk to know all the economic implications for sure.
Colour me nervous but cautiously optimistic about it. I imagine that as a not very attractive kind of sallow colour, btw. :)

Insurance companies work out various rates of reimbursement with various providers. You can be sure that what the insurance paid, plus whatever your co-pay was, was sufficient reimbursement for the services you received.
If I recall my college days, when I wored as a Medicaid claims processor, Medicaid paid providers based on a percentage of the provider's PREVIOUS YEAR's usual and customary rates (UCR)
So, providers would jack up their stated rates to affect the UCR, in order to get a higher reimbursement next year.
Their stated rates were rarely what they ever actually got in reimbursement from insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid.
Even folks with no insurance - if you talk to the provider, many will give you a different rate than what their stated rated is. It will still be a lot, but not nearly as much as what their stated rate is.

Ok
I want to know who the cretin was who decided that Daylight Savings Time should end AFTER halloween.
I understand the theory - kids can trick or treat in daylight and be safer.
Well guess what? Kids have picked up on the fact that trick or treat is fun in darkness and not fun in daylight. Even the little ones know this.
Taking your kid out to trick or treat in daylight on halloween and making them stop at darkness is a form of child abuse. People who do this to kids heap shame on them and the kids know it. But they stoically plod along - obediently following a parent door to door with downcast eyes. Keen observers recognize the twilight parade of the shamed as a living history reenactment of the bataan death march. "Trevor! Stop pulling at your utility belt" barks the mommy at the downtrodden batman who came to my door at 5 pm. In sympathy I doubled his allotment of partially hydroginated rations.
A brief flash of a smile crossed Trevor's face, blunted by a "What do you say, Trevor?" shouted from the curb. I wonder if Trevor might have been fidgeting with his utility belt in search of some tool that might subdue his captor long enough to let him run up and down the streets.with his peers after dark, shouting out which house to go to next and wondering aloud how many houses could they get to in one night.
Not to be. Not for Trevor.

Every new "fix the system" implies that "the system" should remain. It becomes a fixture.
The "fix" always relates to a real problem and sounds reasonable.
Each new "fix" will always involve more and more government regulation and control.
We will always disagree as you will see the problem and feel something should be done to fix it.
I'll always disagree unless the "fix" is less governmental interference as I see it in the larger context.

I still have some vicodin left over from the tooth infection I had earlier this year. Holding on to them for when my knees give me real screaming hissy fits...which it's about time for, since I have bad arthritis in both.
That being said, having the tooth infection did improve my love life, since abcess makes the heart grow fonder.

re: #42 Floral Giraffe
There are fresh ideas. Tort reform. Allowing cross state insurances.
The problems are many. No one is willing to tackle them all. They could be attached a little at a time. HOWEVER, the Democrats have the concept of "health insurance for all" bit between their teeth.
(Never mind that insurance isn't the issue, it's healh care that is the issue...)
I don't think either of these ideas will do much good in the long term.
1)Tort Reform is a good idea, but should be considered low priority at this point. Medical Tort costs are roughly 2% of the total costs according to industry studies
[Link: prescriptions.blogs.nytimes.com...]
2)Auto Insurance is forced to operate on the same intra-state model as health insurance, but yet is wildly competitive is all but a couple state (NJ I'm looking at you). In fact, I would predict that any inter-state insurance would necessarily become regulated by the federal government. This would lead to a bigger government, and MORE Federal intervention in Insurance.
Why?
Because each state is responsible for ensuring the solvency and compliance of insurance companies operating in the state. If a CA risk buys a DE policy, CA senators will complain, and voila, the New interstate insurance regulation bill of 2010 comes in, and I guarantee you it will more likely follow the stricter state's regulations.

Not really the best, but anything in a pinch: I spent part of my childhood in Venezuela, where my parents were not really interested in keeping me supplied with candy. There were plenty of free mangoes in the trees, but I managed to develop a taste for ascorbic acid tablets, the original sour balls.

That $1.5m was for a 'vertical' of every year for the last 135 years. It's more of a historical collection from a world famous Chateau, no bottles will ever be opened.
But a good year will set you back several hundred. I got comped a glass at a fancy place and it was sublime. Instead of asking how much it cost I said it was awesome and asked for another. They obliged!

Yea, I know, not nearly the same thing.

These two comments appearing in order like that is some kind of karmic convergence.
Jim-ski, yes. Little Britain sucked! I think there's some US version of it now? Or maybe it's just being shown in the US?
And Peep Show is brilliant, you'll love the other seasons!

I'm lucky, like you, to live in a rust free zone.
Lately I've been noticing a bunch of these...

There is a steep hill, near where I grew up. Dad HATED VW's with a passion. I learned from him, to pull in front of a VW, and dropp dorn to under 20 MPH. It took HOURS for the VW to climb the hill, and we sped happily off. Those were the days!

Nik 'l nips. Little wax bottles with sweetened water dyed different colors. Used to get them for my kids and steal them from them. Still love 'em. Don't know why. I think it's the squirt when you chomp down on the bottle. Oh yeah.

I had 2 VW vans. Totalled one. Drove the other until I could see the road through the floor. Drove through Wisconsin one winter with no heat; bundled in sleeping bags. Those were the days.

Funny and clever :) From their sketch-based BBC show "That Mitchell and Webb Look":

Officer of the deck to the starboard lookout: "What would you do if a man fell overboard son?"
The lookout immediately replied: "I would yell, 'Man overboard!' sir."
The officer then asked: "And what if an officer fell overboard?"
The lookout was silent for a long moment and then asked: "Which one, sir?"

For a good fifteen minutes the three women at the next table had gone after a mutual acquaintance with vicious gossip. Finally came a brief silence, then one of them sighed, "I tell you, she's a real menance. You don't know that woman like I do."
"Oh yes I do," countered another. "I know her every bit as well as you do."
"Don't be silly," snorted the first woman. "How could you possibly know her as well as I do? I'm her best friend."
