Remaining members of Japan’s doomsday cult executed

Tokyo (CNN)Six members of a Japanese doomsday cult held responsible for the deaths of dozens of people have been executed, according to Japan’s justice minister.
The group’s leader Shoko Asahara — real name Chizuo Matsumoto — was executed earlier in July, along with six other members of the cult, which was responsible for a sarin gas attack on a Tokyo subway in 1995.
Other members of Aum Shinrikyo who had been sentenced to death were hanged Thursday morning, Justice Minister Yoko Kawakami told reporters.

Japan has executed nearly as many people as the US this year.

So far this year, Japan has executed 13 people, all of them linked to the Aum Shinrikyo cult that launched the deadly sarin nerve gas attack in Tokyo in 1995.

It’s the highest number of people executed in Japan in a year since 2008, when 15 died by hanging. The US by comparison has put 14 people on death row so far in 2018, according to the Washington DC-based Death Penalty Information Center.

Six more former members of the Aum cult were hanged today (July 26), following the executions earlier this month of seven others, including the cult’s founder Shoko Asahara, meaning all remaining Aum death row inmates have now been put to death.

A large blast rocked an area in front of the US Embassy in Beijing when a man tried to hurl a homemade bomb into the gated compound, it was reported.

But the bomb exploded before the man could toss it over the fence, causing confusion and panic in the street.

The blast reportedly injured a number of people and damaged a police car parked outside the compound’s gates.

The fate of the bomber was not known, but one video taken in the aftermath shows security personnel, including military and police, working around something under a blue tarpaulin within a cordon.

One person in normal clothes is kneeling next to the tarpaulin as armed soldiers stood guard.

Photos and video clips posted online show smoke filling the street, a cordon and a road partially blocked by police as eyewitnesses gather outside the compound.

Footage shows confusion and panic in the street following the explosion, as eyewitnesses keep their distance and security personnel work at the scene.

It’s from the Mirror, a British tabloid, so take it with a grain of salt, naturally.

Hi, y’all. Been reading to catch up on the Dumpster fire south of the border that passes for our government.

My wife and I are in Prince George, British Columbia today.

We left Juneau the day after meeting up with Cheechako. Unfortunately, I took sick on our last day, and spent the whole cruise to Prince Rupert in the rack in our stateroom. The second day of the cruise my wife also took sick. Apparently, the issue is food poisoning. She is getting better, but I haven’t eaten anything except for a chicken leg and half a tuna sandwich since I was in Alaska.

Tomorrow we’re headed to Kamloops, where we will spend a couple days. According to the BC government, the Kamloops area is suffering from a large number of forest fires. Some roads are reduced speeds or closed. We’ll need to pick up a provincial road map.

bcfireinfo.for.gov.bc.ca

One fire (now under control) has burned 191,865 ha (474,108 acres).

Perhaps related to that explosion. Global Times is the mouthpiece of the CCP, so take the information with a grain of salt.

Self-immolation has been a protest action by Tibetan separatists, while bombs are usually a Uyghur thing. But details are still unavailable right now. The usual suspects are being rounded up, no doubt.

Justice Department Illegal Administration: Use ‘illegal aliens,’ not ‘undocumented’

The Justice Department has instructed US attorneys offices not to use the term “undocumented” immigrants and instead refer to someone illegally in the US as “an illegal alien,” according to a copy of an agency-wide email obtained by CNN.
According to the email, the Justice Department uses terms in the US Code to describe an individual who is illegally in the US, and thus refers to them as “an illegal alien.”
“The word ‘undocumented’ is not based in US code and should not be used to describe someone’s illegal presence in the country,” the email states.

Confirming the obvious, that Rudy Giuliani is a goddamned clown.

CNN commissioned an independent analysis of the tape by audio forensics expert Ed Primeau. He has worked in the industry for over 30 years and has provided testimony as an expert witness in hundreds of cases. Primeau says he has performed thousands of audio enhancements throughout his career.

CNN did not provide Primeau a transcript and asked him to create one based on what he heard in his analysis.

In the tape, Cohen said “we’ll have to pay” to purchase the rights to McDougal’s story. The audio forensics expert concluded that Trump then responded with, “I’ll pay with cash,” to which Cohen immediately replied, “no, no, no,” several times, appearing to reject the idea of paying with cash.

Primeau said his analysis was completed with tools that enhance volume, isolate dialogue and examine soundwaves on a screen. He said he asked another expert at his firm to weigh in and they reached the same conclusion.

Stay strong. Fifty years of conservative sabotage and scheming are approaching a climax. They have achieved power but they have sacrificed everything for it, their honor, their integrity, their very minds and, now, even their loyalty to the nation. They will be defeated, utterly crushed, and it will happen with breathtaking suddenness. Their fortress of lies will crumble and shatter.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. We’re finally getting a bit of a break from the nonstop rain showers that have dumped a couple inches of rain over the region all week. Need a bit of sun to dry things out a bit.

But that’s not what worries me.

It’s that Trump can go out of his way to claim that he’s got a big deal with the EU on tariffs, and he doesn’t even finish that statement before indicating that things will continue and even Mnuchin admits that they have to work out a deal.

Moreover, the entire premise of the “deal” is to keep talking and to get back to the position the sides were in before Trump launched his idiotic trade war. He’s hoping that he can get more soybeans sold to the EU to offset the massive hit Trump’s taking on lost sales to China. Needless to say, that’s not going well.

In fact, the entire trade war has been a disaster, and Trump’s trying to claim he’s won something - if only to get back to the position we were in before he started the trade war.

Everyone knows the idiocy of this trade war, and yet they’ve got to respond because businesses, markets, and consumers are suffering - and if you impose enough harms, you’ll get the other side to back down.

Trump claims that he wants to get rid of tariffs and eliminate trade barriers that kept Americans from manufacturing more stuff. That’s total BS from start to finish, particularly since Trump withdrew from the TPP, which was intended to reduce trade barriers among member nations, and leverage against China.

Apparently they’re only being held back by lack of infrastructure.

While Russia has increased its capacity to export grain ninefold over the last 15 years even that impressive increase will not be enough to keep pace with its 2017-18 grain harvest which is expected to be a record 133 million tonnes.

Out of that crop, 44.5 million tonnes are earmarked for export, up from 37.7 million a year earlier, according to SovEcon consultancy. Analysts and officials say that’s about as much as the country’s infrastructure can cope with for now.

re: #59 I Would Prefer Not To

Look, I created a page

Interesting read about the right’s attempt to smear anyone that criticizes POTUS.

This pisses me off big time. The only effect making hens out of a feather (Gunn, Harmon) or in many cases not even a feather (Pizzagate, (Satanic) Ritual Abuse) is a detrimental one to victims of (child) sexual abuse.
It will have a chilling effect on those who might come forward, because they will fear not being taken seriously because they fear they may become suspected of coming forward to score political points, being an adherent to conspiracy theories.
It will have a chilling effect on law enforcement, because these accusations are sometimes accompanied by bogus charges filed with law enforcement, and the next person coming through the door with a sexual abuse complaint may get a much rougher time because law enforcement don’t want to be played for fools again.
It will have detrimental effects on research because there are asshats which will base opinion pieces masquerading as “research” in order to further their career or status, or simply for the grand ol’ grift. And the (child) sexual abuse field is still dealing with the fallout from the (Satanic) Ritual Abuse panic. People have been convicted for crimes they not only did not commit, but crimes which never happened in the first place. People are still in prison and have even died in prison convicted of Satanic ritual abuse.
Thankfully, people in the field are (slowly) coming to the realization that the contamination of the fields knowledge base of these conspiracy theories and opinion pieces as it’s becoming apparent that it’s not as effective as it should be against (child) sexual abuse.
And even the latter is taken as a sign that there is some grand elite pedophile conspiracy which prevents effective measures, and when new research begins to show that the old narratives in the (child) sexual abuse field are to some extent bogus, it is taken by these damned conspiracy theorists as some liberal conspiracy to normalize pedophilia.
And I think I don’t need to elaborate on the risk posed by many on the Reich wing having the “the best cure for pedophilia is a bullet” mentality. I fear it’s only a matter of time before we see shootings caused by Cernovich and Posobiec cooking alt-righters (mentally unstable or not is beside the point) off.

It depends upon how they introduce the resolution. If it was a ‘privileged’ resolution it would have forced a vote.

Was that the video I put up with the local Ohio soybean farmer?

I have a feeling the farmers are not really saying all of what they are thinking. They are a proud group and probably the last thing they will do is admit they were wrong voting for Trump.

But I bet there is some grumbling going on on those farms.

It probably was your video.

Nobody wants to admit that they were wrong, I get that. But this isn’t just that they were wrong, they were WRONG.

That’s not entirely clear from what I’ve seen, and if it’s the former, then Trump’s got even more trouble - because he’s just opened the door for prosecutors to dig even deeper into Trump’s actions while prosecuting Cohen for wrongdoing.

Cohen’s already screwed, but Trump’s legal team is doing Trump no favors either.

If it’s the latter, then Trump’s again showing that he’s willing to interfere in ongoing criminal investigations and that… for the record… is illegal.

So, wait. Trump said there weren’t tapes. Now it turns out there’s 100+.

About a week ago, Josh Marshall posted a quote from Trump (it’s behind their ‘Prime’ paywall, but I found it in a transcript of an interview with CBS News):

TRUMP: My lawyers are working on that. I’ve always wanted to do an interview, because look, there’s been no collusion. There’s been no talk of Russia. There’s been no phone call. There’s been nothing. And it’s I call it a witch hunt. That’s exactly what it is. It’s a it’s a vicious witch hunt. And you know what? It’s very bad for our country. Very, very bad for our country.

Just out of the blue, totally unprompted, he says ‘There’s been no phone call.’

Josh’s question is the same as mine - What phone call?

The wheat and soybean people are freaked about the tariffs; the fruit and veggie farmers are realizing the immigration crackdown is going to cost them their crews. Avocado farmers are especially dismayed — turns out it’s a specialty skill, and their pickers are mostly nearing retirement age. Replacement apprentices are really hard to find.

Rolling Stone: The Summer’s Hottest Trend Is Owning the Libs

To own the libs is to partake in the pettiest of culture wars. But moreover, to own the libs is to own yourself, no matter which side of the political spectrum you fall on. As comedian Patrick Monahan, an early adopter of the meme, tells Rolling Stone, owning the libs is “laughing as you post ‘Trump is still your President’ memes in Facebook threads while the bank forecloses on your farm. It comes down to a need for community and some kind of cultural ‘win’ [for the right] since they perceive culture to be against them at all times.”

The actual actions that yield successful lib-ownage vary.

“The funny thing about owning the libs is that it’s textbook performative virtue signaling, from people who say they hate that,” Monahan says.

Boycotting corporations that take a progressive political stance or patronizing companies perceived as right-wing are common ways to own the libs. After John “Papa John” Schnatter blamed his falling pizza sales on NFL players kneeling during the national anthem, right-wing conspiracy maven Jack Posobiec had his rehearsal dinner catered by the national pizza chain — and at least one Twitter user commented, “Eating horrible pizza at my wedding to own the libs.” When Netflix inked a deal with Barack and Michelle Obama, alt-right culture warriors claimed to have canceled their subscriptions to the streaming service in protest. Last fall, Keurig pulled its ads from Sean Hannity’s broadcast, following criticism of the Fox News host’s coverage of Alabama Senate Candidate Roy Moore’s sexual misconduct allegations. Hannity Heads rebelled against the company by smashing their Keurigs.

“Owning the libs” in its current form — i.e. blatant self-sabotage for dumb political reasons — first emerged when a user tweeted at Proud Boys founder Gavin McInnes, attaching a photo of himself lying face down in a dumpster.

I don’t think so. I watched a video of a farmer yesterday saying he didn’t want a short-term bailout, that no farmers do, and what they need are markets to sell to. They realize that this supposed bailout is a bandaid and will not take them into next year, the year after or the decade that follows.

There will always be lunatics who are on board to slice their own throats but I do not think this is the majority.

Also, Trump support in the rural middle of the country isn’t as firmly based on racism as it is elsewhere. People in those areas have been agin’ the federal government since the New Deal saved their asses in the 1930’s. They’re less likely to be Trump cultists.

Cohen’s already screwed, but Trump’s legal team is doing Trump no favors either.

If it’s the latter, then Trump’s again showing that he’s willing to interfere in ongoing criminal investigations and that… for the record… is illegal.

The thing that’s most interesting about the released tape is the phone conversation that Trump is having with ‘Pam’ at the beginning of the tape, suggesting that she lay low for a couple of weeks. It sounds like he’s talking to Pam Bondi.

The recording, made by attorney Michael Cohen of his then-client Trump and first reported by CNN, begins with one side of a conversation Trump is having on the phone about a situation he describes as “such bull——” and that he thinks “goes away quickly.”

No specific date in September 2016 was given for when the tape was made. But that month, Trump and Bondi were dealing with the fallout from stories about a $25,000 contribution from the Trump Foundation to Bondi in 2013.

The Washington Post transcript, initially provided by Trump’s legal team “but edited to more accurately reflect CNN’s audio,” lists a word Trump says at the end of the call as “unintelligible,” though an earlier version transcribed it as “Thanks, babe.”

But when listening to the tape, it sounds like Trump is saying, “Thanks, Pam.”

If you listen to the tape, he’s very clearly saying ‘Pam’, and Donald’s end of the conversation makes sense if you apply it to the scandal over Trump’s $25,000 donation to Bondi just before FL dropped charges against Trump University.

I wonder why he locked his account? That’s a bit odd.

People were asking him if he had sex with the Russian spy. Also, he was getting dragged pretty hard for an angry tweet about Andrew Kaczynski from Buzzfeed.

Snowflake had to run to his Twitter safe space and lock the door.

I wonder what their reasons are, because online payments cost banks virtually nothing to process. Do they need some live person to go online to read the screen and check your bill to see if everything matches? If so, their IT department should be fired.

I think some of the city utilities use other services to handle billing and payments instead of messing with it themselves.

I think they are passing on the fee the outside service charges.

Also, Trump support in the rural middle of the country isn’t as firmly based on racism as it is elsewhere. People in those areas have been agin’ the federal government since the New Deal saved their asses in the 1930’s. They’re less likely to be Trump cultists.
