I love it that these righties (assuming they aren’t all just bots) seem to take it for granted that, even after Trump’s spectacular failure at trying extort Wall money out of Congress via the astonishingly unpopular method of holding the livelihoods of government workers hostage - that in three weeks, this [incompetent shambolic shitshow] Administration is going to be able to somehow cobble up some sort of Cunning Plan that will Build The Wall, Own The Libs, Put Nasty Nancy In Her Place, and Make America Great. And all with (basically) the same political factors in play.
Except that three weeks from now, who knows what other foul turds are going to be dredged up from the cesspool of corruption that is the Trump Admin…..
I’m so, so sick of IOKIYAR:
WASHINGTON — President Trump met last week with a delegation of hard-right activists led by Ginni Thomas [R-Republic of Gilead], the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas, listening quietly as members of the group denounced transgender people and women serving in the military before accusing White House aides of blocking Trump supporters from getting jobs in the administration, according to three people with direct knowledge of the events.

I almost hope it does. Because I think this time the Controllers and TAS agents will call in sick day one, shut down the airports, and the government will be reopened that afternoon. IOW a total, immediate, massive, humiliating defeat for Trump.
It will come out at some point (the sooner the better) that Trump
a) borrowed large sums of money from Russian banks and companies
b) was unable to pay them back directly and had to cede interest and control of his operations to Russian interests, which then used them to for their own purposes (i.e., money laundering)
c) allowed these companies to collect large amounts of compromising materials on him that he does not want to see released.

I mean I hate to come off ageist but Bernie in his first year would be older than Reagan was in his last. The optics matter here especially since we’ve seen ample evidence of Trump losing his marbles. TBH I’m just not impressed by Bernie regardless. It’s easy for him to have the voting record he does given his state. And even then his voting record has some unpleasant stuff to it too.

from electoral-vote.com this am - a spin on the national emergency i didnt consider
…this is not such a bad option for him, politically. He declares the emergency, which he and his base can celebrate as “strong” action. Then, the Democrats sue, and the matter gets tied up in the courts for…who knows how long? If the President can stretch it out, then the situation could remain in stasis for months or years. It would be bad for him to run for reelection in 2020 with no wall, and even worse if and when SCOTUS ruled against him. However, those things would be in the future, and in the present he’d be a “winner” and “strong” and the government would stay open, so that he wasn’t taking any further political damage. If you don’t know by now what Trump’s choice is when he has a chance to goose his present-day popularity at risk of suffering major negative consequences down the road, you haven’t been paying attention for the last two-plus years.

That’s the thing that irks me about the Bernouts who preach as the gospel truth that “Bernie woulda won over Trump if Shrillary and the DNC hadn’t stolen the nom from him!”; they either don’t understand or don’t want to believe that, if Hillary were out of the picture, the same Russians (and others, like Assange and WikiLeaks) that were helping Trump by kneecapping Hillary would have been all over Bernie (and his far more questionable history) like white on rice.
Bernie wouldn’t have won jack shit.
Have you also noticed that it’s kids getting these old diseases, not their vaccinated parents?

re: #104 HappyWarrior
I mean I hate to come off ageist but Bernie in his first year would be older than Reagan was in his last. The optics matter here especially since we’ve seen ample evidence of Trump losing his marbles. TBH I’m just not impressed by Bernie regardless. It’s easy for him to have the voting record he does given his state. And even then his voting record has some unpleasant stuff to it too.
The Democrats could run the proverbial yellow dog and I’d vote for them. In Bernie’s case, how happy I’d be about it would heavily depend on who his running mate is. Why do I suspect it would be Tulsi Gabbard?

I find myself in a moderate place between socialism and capitalism. There are some things that capitalism is really, really good at. Running a functional society is NOT one of them. Health care, education - these are socialist institutions. Making and selling things is capitalism’s game.

As long as politician remains a dirty word, they will look to someone else like a businessman or a big personality.

Not to get too technical and poker nerdy; but there’s generally two reasons to fold:
1. you have a relatively weak hand and believe your opponent(s) has a relatively better hand
2. you have a draw but are not getting the right odds to call (the odds of making your draw vs the amount you have to call in relation to the pot)

I was 6 years old when this happen so I really don’t remember it or the aftermath at all. My only exposure was the second episode of the terrific HBO series From the Earth to the Moon. It realistically captured the events leading up to the tragedy, the fire, and the aftermath. The closing scenes, some of the very strongest in the whole series, shows Frank Borman testifying before a Senate panel. He was asked what he thought caused the fire. He replied “lack of imagination”, basically saying that he, NASA, everyone never imagined such a horrific thing could happen. He closes his testimony with a plea to “stop this witchhunt and let us go to the Moon!”. His testimony and those words basically saved the entire Apollo program when the Senate was ready to axe it in response to the fire and the deaths. Very powerful stuff, indeed.

Holy fuck. The Times is now blaming the shutdown on the Democrats.
Veterans of past shutdowns have come to learn that there are few, if any, winners in the end and that closing the government has not proved effective as a negotiating strategy for those who use the government as a lever to press their case. It didn’t work for Newt Gingrich in the 1990s, for Senator Ted Cruz of Texas and House conservatives in 2013 or for Senator Chuck Schumer of New York and fellow Democrats in 2018.

I went and read the whole piece: tbh, except for that one line about “Schumer and Democrats” it really doesn’t fix much blame. That said, though, it’s an unfortunately typical NYT thumbsucker. Of the four Senators quoted (Murkowski, Portman, Grassley and Warner), only one, I noticed, was a Democrat - which I guess counts for “even-handed coverage” by NYT standards. What about actual plans for concetration- and death camps?
IIRC, there is/was a set of plans for at least one such in Sjöbo, Sweden made by the Nazis.

The terminology is a bit confusing when applied there. Many or most of the camp inmates were actually imported to the islands from the continent, to work on Atlantic Wall defenses. Per the article, at least two of them were run by the SS at one time or another.
The Channel Islands occupation gives a look at what the early stages of a successful Sea Lion would have brought.

Washington’s sales tax is up to almost 10%—in King County it is 10%—and it’s on everything except food. Coffee is food, but pop isn’t, but stuff like iced tea in a can is; anything that’s not carbonated. (I got a 12-pack that was all flat one time—I wanted to take it back and demand my sales tax refund.)
Also, since like the idiots we are, we “Got the State out of the liquor business!!”, not only has the price doubled, but there’s an over 20% tax on it and $3.83 a liter on top of that. (You never used to pay sales tax at the State liquor stores because…well…it was all tax.)

re: #316 Eclectic Cyborg

That depends on the interpretation of some obscure legal precedent. There have been claims that a sitting President cannot be indicted, in which case, he cannot, by definition, be arrested. However, this is an untested legal theory, as no one has actually tried to indict a sitting President; in previous cases, the President has been brought up on articles of impeachment before any indictments could be brought. In other words, we’re in uncharted territory now.

Anti-vaxxers are persuaded that the vaccination industry is somehow feeding off of killing people. Which, if you think about it, is completely counter-productive; it’s a self-limiting market. If you push people to get vaccinated, and they get autistic or die, your product is worthless. So… why, exactly, would they want to do this, again? Oh, that’s right, that’s where it gets into conspiracy theory territory. So, long story short, they’re FUCKING STUPID.
re: #337 The Very Reverend Battleaxe of Knowledge
They keep saying it’s DoJ policy that “a sitting president can’t be indicted”. I don’t know what theory this is based on, but it’s inconceivable to me that there is any written law anywhere to that effect.
Crime committed before president
Committed to win the office
Committed in the office
Maybe not the first
Definitely 2 and 3
Pelosi Statement on Special Counsel Indictment and Arrest of Trump Campaign Advisor Roger Stone
Washington, D.C. - Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued this statement after Special Counsel Mueller released a seven-count indictment of top Trump campaign advisor Roger Stone, for lying to Congress, witness tampering, and obstruction:
“The indictment of Roger Stone makes clear that there was a deliberate, coordinated attempt by top Trump campaign officials to influence the 2016 election and subvert the will of the American people. It is staggering that the President has chosen to surround himself with people who violated the integrity of our democracy and lied to the FBI and Congress about it.
“In the face of 37 indictments, the President’s continued actions to undermine the Special Counsel investigation raise the questions: what does Putin have on the President, politically, personally or financially? Why has the Trump Administration continued to discuss pulling the U.S. out of NATO, which would be a massive victory for Putin?“Lying to Congress and witness tampering constitute grave crimes. All who commit these illegal acts should be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law. We cannot allow any effort to intimidate witnesses or prevent them from appearing before Congress.
“The Special Counsel investigation is working, and the House will continue to exercise our constitutional oversight responsibility and ensure that the Special Counsel investigation can continue free from interference from the White House.”
Yes, the top is written in third person even though it’s from her office.

Thankfully, British and American libel law had diverged even BEFORE the Revolution and she won’t win a case like that here, now that 🍊💩🐒doesn’t have the House to write new libel law congruent with the British interpretation 😈

She means lobelia
The genus Lobelia comprises a substantial number of large and small annual, perennial and shrubby species, hardy and tender, from a variety of habitats, in a range of colours. Many species appear totally dissimilar from each other. However, all have simple, alternate leaves and two-lipped tubular flowers, each with five lobes. The upper two lobes may be erect while the lower three lobes may be fanned out. Flowering is often abundant and the flower colour intense, hence their popularity as ornamental garden subjects.[10]

Geoffrey Pullum has a great discussion of this in The Great Eskimo Vocabulary Hoax and Other Irreverent Essays on the Study of Language. The chapter, I think is called The Linguistics of Defamation. In American law, the truth is still a defense, and in dealing with public figures, it’s based as he says: “On the salutary principle that if you can’t stand the heat, you should stay out of the kitchen.”
