hi
So after a week of shying away from the new straight razor my wife bought, with images of a cut throat dancing through my head, I sat down and watched a ton of “so this is your first straight razor” videos on YouTube.
I had at least six weeks of beard growth because I’m lazy, so I watched a couple of understudies for ZZTop taking a razor to their faces.
Went in a bit more positive about it.
Came out looking like the shower scene in “Psycho” but mostly the bleeding has stopped.
I assume I will get better at this.

Straight razors are … interesting… as you’re discovering. I prefer, when I shave, a nice safety razor with good platinum coated blades :D These days I have a beard trimmer instead.

That’s why I argue conservatism is a religion. Facts cannot penetrate what conservatives just know is true. It can only be mocked; it cannot be reasoned with.
If a conservative in good faith wants to know about why this is true or that is not, then sure, give them that answer. Bad faith arguments which are PRATTs do not deserve any of your time any more than bad faith religious arguments which are PRATTs. (If people evolved from monkeys, why are there still monkeys? If the USA evolved from England, why is there still an England? Treat conservative bad-faith arguments like that.)

There hasn’t been much talk of that in my state, but I”ll bet we’re going to hear the same we heard after NE-2 went for Obama in 2008, that we need to count all our electoral votes as one state rather than three separate districts.

Not much talk about it right now here in VA, but I imagine that has something to do with the fact that the VA GOP no longer have control over the General Assembly. In decades past, there would have already been talk started about new/tighter voting legislation in time for the gubernatorial election next November. But with both houses and the top three spots in the hands of the Dems, there’s little chance of more than a few wingnut city/town gov’ts trying to “keep ‘those people’ in line.”
How bad is it for Repubs in this state right now? So bad that they’re putting their hopes on the “tradition” of the opposition party to the party in the WH winning the governor’s mansion.

For those who think they exist and live in a state about 40 miles west of Scottsbluff, there is bad news. Wyoming, the state you call home, doesn’t exist.
This shocking news comes from a strange internet theory. If you read the story in this week’s Hometowns or on the Star-Herald’s website you might still be scratching your head or trying to recover from laughing so hard it hurt. If this is the first you’ve heard of it-surprise.
In reading the story it is clear it started as a joke, but some truly believe the Cowboy state is a figment if our imagination.
As stupid (wait a second stupid is probably politically incorrect, so how about as geographical challenged) as these individuals are let’s think this through. If you live in this nonexistent place, do you really exist? And if you don’t really exist then do you have to pay taxes to the IRS?

Of all the tricks the devil pulled, the greatest was convincing millions of Americans that they are “rugged individualists” if they don’t know they’re benefiting from a social contract. You got a health insurance policy? Every dollar past what you pay in deductibles is coming out of somebody else’s pocket. Yes, that even includes the co-pays, the discounted meds, the free/discounted exams, the “cheap” glasses and dental fillings, and so many other items that you’re not paying full freight for.

There really can’t be any longitudinal studies, since the disease has only been around since last December.
As Their Numbers Grow, COVID-19 “Long Haulers” Stump Experts (Journal of the American Medical Association, September 23, 2020)
In a recent JAMA research letter, 125 of 143 Italian patients ranging in age from 19 to 84 years still experienced physician-confirmed COVID-19-related symptoms an average of 2 months after their first symptom emerged. All had been hospitalized, with their stays averaging about 2 weeks; 80% hadn’t received any form of ventilation.
Physicians at a Paris hospital recently reported that they saw an average of 30 long haulers every week between mid-May, when the COVID-19 lockdown ended in France, and late July. The patients’ average age was around 40 years, and women outnumbered men 4 to 1.
As with SARS, many COVID-19 long haulers are health care workers who had massive exposure to the virus early in the pandemic, neuroimmunologist Avindra Nath, MD, of the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), noted in a recent editorial.
Overall, approximately 10% of people who’ve had COVID-19 experience prolonged symptoms, a UK team estimated in a recently published Practice Pointer on postacute COVID-19 management. And yet, the authors wrote, primary care physicians have little evidence to guide their care.

Yeah, reading through tweets produced through “Supreme Court” and “SCOTUS” searches in the past 48 hours has been a hoot. They’ve gone full Heaven’s Gate, totally divorced from reality and babbling about how the moment Ellis gets her case before the USSC bench, it’s gonna totally blow up the election and Biden’s gonna be on his way to prison while Trump takes the oath of office with a grinning ACB holding the Bible.
re: #38 Anymouse 🌹🏡😷
I mean, there’s this big square in the Rocky Mountains on maps, but have you ever met anyone from Wyoming?
Have you ever seen a car with Wyoming license plates?
Sure, those of us in the Nebraska Panhandle can say you see almost as many cars with Wyoming license plates as Nebraska license plates in Scottsbluff, but would you even believe those eyewitness accounts? Who names a town Scottsbluff, anyway?
Sometimes I wonder if some conspiracy theories start out as gags. Zetetic astronomy (flat eartherism) was promoted in the mid-XIX Century, and the guy who came up with it distributed pamphlets on the subject. That was later taken up as a cause célèbre by one Lady Blount, who put her considerable wealth behind establishing a Zetetic Society in both the UK and the USA, and distributing the pamphlets, then a book on the subject.
So one wonders if “Wyoming” might become a serious conspiracy theory in the future, with those of us who live near the state in on the conspiracy to hide the fact no people actually live there.

re: #47 Targetpractice

Many Trump supporters display some of the characteristics of an apocalyptic cult.
From “rounding up all the deep state criminals” to magical thinking about their “end times” (a second election victory), many will not be able to process the fact he lost the election (by a bigger margin: He won with 304 electoral votes, and I’m aware of the faithless electors but the fact remains those electors didn’t vote for him) versus 306 for Biden (assuming no faithless electors).
Explanations for why the election did not go their way get more absurd by the day, from massive amounts of in-person voter fraud to “states dumping ballots from who knows where” (that claim comes up from Republicans nearly every election though).
Most Trump supporters aren’t Q-nuts, but those folks are goading on Trump supporters with their bullshyte claims, as is the Republican Party itself.
While some apocalyptic cults simply fade away and others re-calibrate when their predictions don’t pan out, a lot of members of such groups will commit suicide.
Can Trump’s Followers Be Called a “Cult”? (Psychology Today, November 13, 2020)
Definitions vary, but a basic one that applies across disciplines is, “A religion or sect, generally considered to be extremist or false, under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader for whom members exhibit fixed, even religious, veneration.” Mr. Trump’s most devoted followers are a relatively small part of the U.S. electorate. They tend to believe in a very specific idea of patriotism that includes international isolationism and xenophobia, under the guidance of a man who some claim was “chosen by God” to lead them.

Well, there’s the issue of someone sticking a microphone and camera in your face, which can upset you.
There is also the issue of “man-on-the-street” interviews, where people tend to pull either the most absurd or most supportive clips, depending on their agenda.
Plus, the fellow was interviewing a person selling a craptonne of Trump gear, which I presume he had to put his own money into first.

Actor Isaac Kappy died Monday morning after he “forced himself off” a bridge in Arizona. He was 42 years old.
Around 7:30 a.m. Monday, state troopers responded to call at Interstate 40 after a man “forced himself off” the Transwestern Road bridge near Bellemont onto the highway, Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman, Bart Graves, told The Arizona Daily Sun.
Two teens reportedly attempted to stop Kappy from jumping but were unsuccessful, and he was then struck by a passing vehicle.

It became clear in hindsight that this was his overall strategy: Claim victory on the early returns, and if he wound up losing based on mail-in ballots, try to get all of them thrown out. To that end, his exhorting his cult to vote in-person makes sense; he wanted to make sure that a sweeping anti-mail-in-ballot initiative wouldn’t wind up screwing himself over. Where he fell short is that even his judicial appointees have enough integrity, or survival instinct, or whatever you want to call it, to refuse to just blatantly cast aside the results of a legal and legitimate election based on the whims of the man who would be king. As a result, his failure to encourage his supporters to vote by any means necessary looks like a mistake in hindsight - and it definitely was - but it was also a deliberate part of his overall gambit.

My question is, what dim-witted “adviser” came up with this hare-brained scheme that involved getting courts to invalidate potentially millions of mail-in ballots? I mean, jeez, anyone with more than two brain cells to rub together could surely see that even IF the courts ruled in their favor, it would be an untold disaster that still might backfire on them.

I’m not sure that the word ‘strategy’ really applies. As with all ideas that originate in right wing media, the words are simply noises and bodily emanations that convey an unspoken emotion or concept. In this case, the concept is quite clear - votes from ‘those people’ should not count, can’t possibly be legal or right. Republicans have been building towards this for a while, but as with everything in the Trump era, the quiet part is now spoken more loudly. Hence the disbelief from Trump voters and FOX news hosts - how could Joe Biden possibly have gotten 80 million votes? They know, they just know, like they know everything they are so incredibly certain of in their little reptile brains, that there is no way those 80 million votes are legal, because they know that the people who cast them aren’t legal. They’re just not. They’re not legal because that’s what the law is - it’s a mechanism that defines those people as not people, and us, the real Americans, as people. So there’s no way 80 million actual people voted for Biden, because they know who the actual people are.
This same principle applies to all other right wing ideas. When people say they voted the way they did because of ‘court packing’, or ‘abortion’, or whatever magic word they choose, it’s not true. The truth is, they consume right wing media, and in the FOX cinematic universe, they were told who the villains were. Their response was as natural as it was mandatory - the words mean nothing, and are just regurgitations.

the staggering death totals probably mean that we will never get a full accounting of just how reckless and selfish we have been. the shame should persist forever, but of course it will not. because that would require a collective conscience we do not possess.
As I enter the tenth month of “stay at home,” I do not accept the “reckless and selfish” label, and I don’t believe in collective conscience (collective responsibility, yesterday). And even the first time around, the “supply chain issues” were almost entirely demand-driven: mainly due to hoarding behavior: the (somewhat more-credible) fears of people being unable to get “out” to shop for stuff (and not wanting to get caught in a lockdown running out of bogroll) - and the (less-credible) apprehensions that COVID would disrupt production.
Though in the end, the shortages of paper goods still materialized, and still are.

Yesterday my Costco was out of toilet paper. Today it was in stock, so I bought a pack of 36 rolls of Scott-branded TP.

Back from the church, but going out again in a few minutes. I came home to make a The guy who was putting out the sign for the bilingual (Spanish/English) service was hostile. The sign was on the public sidewalk, so I made a point of blocking it with my fat self. I also had someone take my picture.
I’m currently watching their church service on YouTube, and the pastor is going on about a prophecy he says God gave him two years ago about the Spanish members. *rolls eyes* OH MY. I believe the guy sitting on the platform with the pastor is HOSTILE DUDE.
re: #162 Eric The Fruit Bat
Yesterday my Costco was out of toilet paper. Today it was in stock, so I bought a pack of 36 rolls of Scott-branded TP.
I also saw a whole lot of people buying paper toweling, and they got plenty in stock, so I’m not so worried about that.
The last time I went shopping, I cruised by the paper products aisle, as one does, and it was completely full of paper towels. No TP seen.
So at least there’s a substitute.
🚨🚨BREAKING: Wisconsin’s presidential recount is completed. Joe Biden gained 87 votes and again won the state.
Trump becomes the first presidential candidate in history to lose recounts in two different states.

Hm. My take is that there are definitely hiccups in the supply chain in my area, but if you have a watchful eye, you can snag decent amounts of toilet paper, paper towels and disinfectant wipes.
Talking to my father and it appears a probate lawyer is poking his nose around looking for me and the other nieces and nephews of a relative who passed a few years ago but mentioned us all in his will. Hopefully he was as well off as he liked to present himself as being :D but honestly it’s more likely nothing much. It’ll be entertaining to see what happens.

I use cloth towels, so I’m on (I think) my third roll in thirty years. During the Great Toilet Paper shortage, they had a roll of reusable paper towels, which I’d never seen before, so I bought one. I’ll use it when my current roll runs out. If I live that long.
re: #174 mmmirele
Oh, it turns out Hostile Dude is “Pastor Jose”, apparently the leader of a Spanish-speaking congregation which is apparently merging or something.
Dammit, Eric Jones is now going on about “the wall.” *rolls eyes* Jesus didn’t tell you to go on about that stuff, Eric.
Going back out…back later.

I love you but you’re a piker on both counts. 😂 I was going to stop my auto-shipments because we had so much (8 24 packs of TP and 8 12 rolls of paper towels). Hubs was giving me all kinds of shit and I said I’d pare back after the second wave. I flatly refuse to use three phone book to wipe my butt.
Funny story. Last time when everything was scarce I bought some bright red TP from Amazon. I was unaware that it was perfumed. I have a small cabinet in the bathroom that holds about 15 rolls of TP and it’s had 6 rolls of the red stuff for months. Every time I open it, the entire bathroom is perfumed. It’s delightful. Unfortunately, perfumed cooch paper is a non starter. So the occasional butt wipe it is.
The stores in my area never stopped the 2/customer limits (or 1 in some cases) even as the supply chain was reestablished and the hoarding ended. I haven’t seen any serious tissues issues.

The toilet paper intended for office buildings and schools comes in enormous rolls, packs of enough for the whole building, and it’s not as soft or scented as the stuff intended for consumers.
The same problem happened with food early on; vegetables, pasta, rice, peanut butter, milk, eggs, etc intended for school or company cafeterias, or busy restaurants, are entirely different packaging than what you’d buy for home. The farms were still growing just as much, it was the packaging companies that had to do pandemic-retooling.

Security Experts Fear State Secrets Won’t Be Safe With Indebted Donald Trump
Security experts are raising concerns about the safety of state secrets accessible to Donald Trump, particularly as massive debts on his businesses come due.
Trump already has access to secrets that could be devastating to the U.S. if they were leaked or sold. In addition, presidents typically continue to be briefed on national security in certain circumstances even after they leave office, NBC News reports.
Trump has proven to be dangerously reckless with intelligence and confoundingly supportive of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
But classified information could also now represent a “profit center” to the heavily indebted president, according to NBC. The New York Times recently reported that Trump owes $421 million in business debt that he has personally guaranteed. Forbes investigations have indicated Trump could owe closer to $1 billion.

Straight razors are … interesting… as you’re discovering. I prefer, when I shave, a nice safety razor with good platinum coated blades :D These days I have a beard trimmer instead.
I use a safety razor for my dailybiweekly shave. I have a vintage straight razor that I’ve used once or twice but no strope, so I can’t keep it sufficiently sharp. It really is amazing how much of a better shave I get doing it the old fashioned way compared to the modern multi blade products

There’s really no reason for that. A box like I get from Amazon has 4 6-packs in it - 24 rolls total. It will last my 4-person family for 1.5-2 months at normal usage. If we all came down with a bad case of the runs, we might - MIGHT - go through half a pack at once. TL:DR; panic buying is not justified by the potential for digestive dysfunction. A typical stock is enough to manage.

I dunno what we’re going to do at home alone this year. There is no chance we are meeting up with any of Mrs. Fish’s family; her parents are old and vulnerable, the rest of her family either is or has recently been sick with the disease. I want nothing to do with that pack of plague rats. One of them, apparently, went around telling people that their family had the cold, but admitted to my parents-in-law that they had tested positive.

Did Trump blurt out info about a secret nuclear weapons program?
It’s difficult to choose the single most astonishing thing Donald Trump told the Washington Post’s Bob Woodward, but among my personal favorites was the president’s willingness to boast about a secret nuclear weapons program.
In the midst of reflecting upon how close the United States had come in 2017 to war with North Korea, Trump revealed: “I have built a nuclear — a weapons system that nobody’s ever had in this country before. We have stuff that you haven’t even seen or heard about. We have stuff that Putin and Xi have never heard about before. There’s nobody — what we have is incredible.”
The Post’s article on this added that Woodward’s sources “later confirmed that the U.S. military had a secret new weapons system, but they would not provide details, and that the people were surprised Trump had disclosed it.”
Trump’s disregard for security, whether carelessness or something more sinister, extends well beyond military secrets (though that alone is terrifying). I think it is the reason federal law enforcement cannot fully or effectively investigate foreign influence, money laundering, and a variety of other offenses in which Trump and the GOP might have an interest. He can tip off the targets of these investigations and even betray confidential sources. Has this happened? Who knows but it is easy to see that an FBI or SEC agent would not take the risk, and potential sources definitely would not.
One of my best friends, someone I have known since about 1980, had been in the Air Force in the ’60s. He was always a little cagey about what he did for them. I knew that he had been in Turkey, and at SAC headquarters at Offutt, but not his specific job. Interestingly he never went to Vietnam or anywhere else in East Asia. He was a lefty and anti-war activist in civilian life but he also believed that people who reveal military secrets should be thrown in prison till they rot. It was only in the 21st century, decades after the fact, that he felt he could reveal what he did, since the program had finally been de-classified. He was a satellite image analyst, at a time when satellite reconnaissance was one of the most closely guarded secrets in the world. It was common knowledge that such a thing existed but no one outside the IC had any idea just what the capability was, and wasn’t, and they wanted to keep it that way.

re: #218 thedopefishlives
I think, and we’ve seen this with other polls, there’s also an element of not knowing what she’s actually (not) doing. Like the people who believe that Trump supports wearing masks - he doesn’t, those of us who pay attention to him know that, but his average everyday follower doesn’t actually listen to what he says specifically and couldn’t tell you what he does or doesn’t believe if asked. I imagine the same is likely true of Noem and South Dakotans.
re: #209 Eventual Carrion
And Joe’s pick up a few hundred more votes because of it.
Those extra 219 votes the recounts picked up for Joe and Kamala in WI are probably irrelevant, though. Unless the Trumpsters have finally decided to face reality and give up (unlikely, with all that unrealized grift floating around), it’s far more likely that the recount was just a formality to get out of the way before they go (yet again) to challenge the results and/or certification in (yet another) court, on whatever specious bullshit grounds Rudy Giuliani and Sidney Powell can defecate out.
Of course, they are taking the chance that the courts in whatever Circuit Wisconsin is in will treat the Trump campaign’s claims any better/differently than the ones in PA, but what have they got to lose (besides the case)? It’s not their money, and it’s not like they presently have much else to do with their time.
re: #217 Yeah Sure WhatEVs
Politicians approval rating is basically “they are doing what I want them to do”. In New Zealand the will of the people was “stop the virus” so support for a national quarantine made sense. In South Dakota the will of the people is apparently cartmanesque “I do what I want”, so the Governor saying “fuck it do what you want” makes sense

The dead don’t answer polls.
The people at Evident Life Church are seriously hostile. I had one woman tell me, as she was driving out, “Nobody cares, bitch.” Pastor Jose said I was “hateful” several times. I told him I was amused. I also told him that their hostility was worse than Scientology’s. Thinking about it, maybe they’re *tied*. But seriously, the hostility was bad. Other churches have sent people out to talk to me nicely, offer me water, etc.
That said, I did have a nice chat with a guy wearing an El Salvador jacket and a mask (unlike many of the other attendees). This was his first time at the church. He agreed with my revised sign and I warned him that the congregation is all in on Trump conspiracy theories. I pointed him to the church’s YouTube channel so that he wouldn’t think I was talking nonsense. So that was my one good deed of the day.
(The other side said “Pastor Eric Jones: The Constitution TRUMPS your False Prophets!” but you’ve seen that before.)
Next week I’ll make a point of having one sign in español. My Spanish is lousy but it’s good enough to come up with a pithy sentence about how their pastor is a false prophet. Apparently the people think Eric Jones is a prophet of some sort. So yeah, I’m going to amp it up just a tad.

Probably not. If they ever admit that they know how insurance works, they would lose one of their emotional appeals to selfishness. Then all they would have left are ridiculous lies about how, and how well, Canadian and European healthcare works.
