It became clear in hindsight that this was his overall strategy: Claim victory on the early returns, and if he wound up losing based on mail-in ballots, try to get all of them thrown out. To that end, his exhorting his cult to vote in-person makes sense; he wanted to make sure that a sweeping anti-mail-in-ballot initiative wouldn’t wind up screwing himself over. Where he fell short is that even his judicial appointees have enough integrity, or survival instinct, or whatever you want to call it, to refuse to just blatantly cast aside the results of a legal and legitimate election based on the whims of the man who would be king. As a result, his failure to encourage his supporters to vote by any means necessary looks like a mistake in hindsight - and it definitely was - but it was also a deliberate part of his overall gambit.
