I am old enough to remember when, among some on what passes for “The Left” here in the USA, when Ortega and the Sandinistas were the bees knees.

Fast forward four decades and…

The stream of high-profile opposition leaders, journalists and members of civil society fleeing Nicaragua has surged, as the regime of President Daniel Ortega wages the most alarming political crackdown in the country’s recent history ahead of a November election.

In the last week, several of the most influential critics of the Ortega regime sneaked out of the country — convinced they would be detained if they remained. Journalists for mainstream publications were stripped of their passports, but decided to leave anyway. Even some of Ortega’s former top Sandinista comrades are seeking refuge abroad. The consequences for remaining in the country could be dire: Over the past several months, at least 16 opposition figures have been jailed.

That said, I still think what Ronnie Raygun was doing in Central America was wrong in general. We’re STILL dealing with the fallout from his escapades and this is just one example.

We’re still dealing with the fallout from US intervention dating back to the early 20th century.

re: #4 Wendell Zurkowitz ((slave to the waffle light))

We’re still dealing with the fallout from US intervention dating back to the early 20th century.

Yeah, Jacobo Arbenz was mentioned in the previous thread.

On a completely different subject…the Pope needs to figure out what he really thinks about LGBTQ people, instead of sending out mixed signals like this.

Pope Francis has sent an encouraging letter to a U.S. priest known for his ministry affirming LGBTQ Catholics, comparing his work to Jesus and God.

The pope’s letter comes in the wake of more oppositional moves from the Vatican — that were authorized by Francis — on the topic of gay rights. And it adds to the confusion facing many LGBT Catholics about where the pontiff stands eight years after he said, famously, “Who am I to judge?”

The Rev. James Martin, one of the country’s best-known Catholic priests for his work on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” and for his advocacy for gay Catholics, on Sunday shared the June 21 letter from Pope Francis. In the letter, which was written in Spanish, Francis thanks Martin for a conference that Martin oversaw Saturday with 1,000 attendees about ministry to LGBTQ Catholics.

“I want to thank you for your pastoral zeal and your ability to be close to people, with the closeness Jesus had, and which reflects the closeness of God … Thinking of your pastoral work, I see that you are continually seeking to imitate this style of God,” Francis wrote. “And I pray for your faithful, your ‘flock,’ and all those whom the Lord places in your care.”

washingtonpost.com

On the one hand, it amuses me to see Francis riling up the Catholic fundie faithful by sending James Martin a letter, but on the other hand, as the story mentions, the Catholic church is still not at all good with LGBTQIA people. But I will enjoy, just for a moment, that Francis has managed to irritate a bunch of right wing prelates and their followers.

There’s a house on Gilbert Rd here in Mesa, on a fairly large tract of land, that has what looks like a defunct swingset, and from the top of the swingset there are not one, not two but three “Trump 2020” flags. I’m thinking at this point the occupant is making the point that they’re a Trump dead-ender. This is Google Street View from February but I can confirm the flags are still out there as of Friday. For the record, because I’m driving, I hadn’t noticed the house banner or the fence banner.

At least the guy with the small pasture and tiny orchard on University Drive took down his big Trump sign in January.

Oh I see that shit every day. But some have scrubbed the stickers/banners/signs. If they have changed I have no clue. It really distressed me to face the truth that the dislike/hatred of Obama morphed into them just going fucking full on fascist. And that is what it is.
Some have grown into the man they hated as a child and can’t even see it.
Others shit on me and others, but now, “can’t we just have fun?”

Have anything to say to me, Zippy?
Right.

I have so many examples of stupid/racist it makes me so fucking angry and I have been trying to rise above that. Tried talking.
Nope.
Right to my face they would say “Fuck them.”
I AM THEM.
Like sport.
Fun.
FUCK EVERYONE NOT LIKE ME.
Look how upset THEY are.
I may be able to forgive a few but I never forget.
I’m very Irish genetically.
I’ll know when I’m getting dementia when I forget the grudges I hold.
Small town bullshit. They never have the balls to tell people to fuck off because they have to see/deal with them.

No guts.

Told one hard guy who carries a 40 semi auto to man up and carry a knife.
“Why?”
Because then your hard ass has to get close.
“Huh?”
Yeah.
Going to go back to the 95 degree backyard paradise we carved out.
Peace.

The MAGAt in my neighborhood had two Trump flags and one US flag, along with the Gadsden flag. He’s back to just Old Glory and Old Snakey.

“…Asserting that “privileged groups” fail to see how others often lack the same privileges and therefore dismiss their complaints, King rattled off for them — and us — a litany of the systemic and structural inequalities that faced African Americans, including police brutality, voting discrimination and an unequal economy that locked “the vast majority of your 20 million Negro brothers smothering in an airtight cage of poverty in the midst of an affluent society.”

Notably, King spent a great deal of the letter outlining how “the unjust law” — which he defined as “a code that a numerical or power majority group compels a minority group to obey but does not make binding on itself” — worked to prop up those racial and economic inequalities. The racist intent or racial impact of such legislation might not be overt, King noted. “Sometimes a law is just on its face,” he wrote, “and unjust in its application.”

That’s such a weird overstatement I suspect a creationist wrote it.

No need to inject creationists into this. There has always (at least for values of always up to about 2200 years or so ago) been a belief in China that the people of the middle kingdom are different from and superior to everyone else. They have made arguments that Peking man represents a different and superior species from h. sap., and this is probably more of the same (please note I haven’t been paying a lot of attention to it).

This. The PRC has pushed bullshit theories about ethnic Han Chinese being descended from another line of humans which are descended from Homo Erectus rather than Homo Sapiens.

Never mind the whole part about if you were that far separated from the rest of the Human species, it could be easily figured out in DNA, and you would likely not be able to, or have severe difficulty inter-breeding with the rest of us.

I keep up on human evolution as it’s always been a fascination of mine. As has been said, this is probably simply the same as the Denisovan population. All part and parcel of the same H. Sapiens line simply with more “robust” (to use the phrasing in other species) physiology in the archaic forms.

Right now we have 3 forms that broke off of H. Heidelbergensis - the Denisovan population, the Neanderthal population and the Cro-Magnon population with all three interfertile (hence not separate species) that interbred and faded out into the single modern form of H. Sapiens population.

It’s an exciting find with a cool backstory. A Chinese worker found it during WWII, and hid it in a well instead of giving it to Japanese occupiers. He revealed it’s location to his family in 2018 on his deathbed, and they found it in the well.

Here’s a good article on the discovery from New Scientist:

‘Dragon man’ claimed as new species of ancient human but doubts remain

A large fossil skull discovered in China may belong to one of our mysterious long-lost relatives, the Denisovans, potentially offering us our first glimpse of a Denisovan face. It has, however, been placed in a new human species - Homo longi - a name that derives from a Chinese term meaning “dragon”, and that means the early hominin may become known informally as “dragon man”.

Other researchers say the discovery is important and exciting, but think the decision to add a new species to our family tree is premature.

I’ve tried to use some CCTV documentaries in class in the past. They can be quite good for demonstrating real artifacts and archeology of pre-historical areas that are now China, but they begin with the premise that there has always been a “China” and can be quite jingoistic: “no where else in the world can one find such examples of….” Of course, there’s a lot to be proud of, but I wonder if it bothers some leaders that written language and other advancements occurred well before in the Indus river area and in the so-called “fertile crescent” and what is now Egypt.

Many UK outlets run over the top stories about this item. They don’t even understand that the published research about the skull (which was discovered long ago) is about dating the skull.

As I noted, the skull was dug up a long time ago.

If it does represent another species of humans we should not be surprised. We already know of 4 species of Homo that coexisted during the existence of H. sapiens.

Cool! My 89yo mom just got one. She and my dad have been in an early-morning exercise class for over 25 years, but dad, at 95, just can’t do it anymore. And with his onset of dementia, mom can’t leave him. Thus the new peddles.

Today I found my paternal great-great-grandfather’s immigration records. He arrived in steerage on the ship Brencen in 1866 at the age of 21. He was a mason from Württemberg Germany.

Also found my maternal grandfather’s 1944 naturalization record.

So, a successful research day.

Also found the immigration record and passenger list for my great-grandfather’s brother, who arrived from Ireland in 1888 on the ship Italy.

That’s awesome. The first immigrants on my dad’s mother’s side also came from Germany (I can’t remember where, but my parents have the records). The first records we have is of a Henry who landed eventually in Paris, Kentucky in 1789. His son left and ended up in western Illinois in the 1820s. There’s a small town there that bears the name Hersman, named after my ancestor. I think it’s main industries are big agro and a prison now. My dad’s father’s side came in 1634 to what is now Cambridge, MA, but left soon after with Thomas Hooker to what became New Haven, CT. They followed the northern corridor with a generation living in what’s now northeast Ohio, and then ended up in northern Illinois. All were farmers until my granddad’s generation, when he became a professor of …. agriculture at the University of Illinois. (Wrong: several of my ancestors were protestant ministers, too. Just remembered that.)

On the issue of that Patriot Takes/Meidas Touch video in the last thread about MAGAts leaving the Fuckface Nürnberg Rally early in droves, has anyone verified that’s actually what was happening? I really want to believe that they all showed up to hear some bombshells about “Teh Steeeel”™ and when he just cycled through his old bullshit greatest hits, they finally realized they were fools and wasting their time.

I really want that to be true. Until I get proof though, I’m going to assume that was not what was happening though.

Digital operatives in both parties deploy an array of manipulative tactics that can deceive donors of all age groups: faux bill notices and official-looking correspondence; bogus offers to match donations and hidden links to unsubscribe; and prechecked boxes that automatically repeat donations, which are widely seen as the most egregious scheme.”

“But some groups appear to specifically target older internet users, blasting out messages with subject lines like ‘Social Security’ that have particular resonance for older people, and spending disproportionately on ads for an older audience. In many cases, the most unscrupulous tactics of direct mail have simply been rebooted for the digital age — with ruthless new precision.”
