Meloni is an overt fascist, and Truss is an operative of the party that has utterly wrecked Britain’s economy. Steve Scalise described himself as “David Duke without the baggage” and this is why. The GOP has openly embraced fascism, and it’s accelerating. https://t.co/NPtWBDYGj4

Broken record I am, about what I call worldview collapse.
The 61% of Republicans who want a theocracy are desperate, hoping that a Christian dictator will keep them from dealing with a reality that surrounds them.
That reality is simply this: the world in general is much less magical then what it was 250 years ago when the US was being birthed.
Increasingly, American society is more secular, and while atheism and agnosticism are still small minorities, a great many Americans identify as “spiritual but not religious.”
The religious right are afraid. They are afraid that when they die they will go to hell unless they jump through the hoops of their religion. They are afraid that their family members will suffer such a fate even if they don’t (though I don’t know why that really ought to be a problem unless one in heaven actually remembers their lost loved ones for eternity, which to me seems to make heaven a place of torment but what do I know.)
They are afraid of their own sexuality. They are afraid of their own shadows - ghosts.
Make no mistake, a secular America is a threat to the religious right. An existential threat. And the religious right knows it.
Never mind that there’s no legitimate reason to impeach Joe Biden. But lack of legitimate reasons never stops Republicans, and we should take them at their word when they say what they intend to do. https://t.co/w1IaeBUo5z

Bucks County Man Indicted on Federal Charges for Assaulting a Reproductive Healthcare Clinic Escort
According to court documents, the defendant is alleged to have twice assaulted a man because he was a volunteer reproductive health care clinic escort. The charges stem from two separate incidents both on October 13, 2021, which occurred at the Planned Parenthood Elizabeth Blackwell Health Center on Locust Street in Philadelphia, where Houck allegedly assaulted the victim, a 72-year-old man, identified in the Indictment as “B.L.,” because B.L. was a volunteer escort at the reproductive health care clinic. In the first incident, B.L. was attempting to escort two patients exiting the clinic, when the defendant forcefully shoved B.L. to the ground. In the second incident, the defendant verbally confronted B.L. and forcefully shoved B.L. to the ground in front of the Planned Parenthood center, causing injuries to B.L. that required medical attention.

They do have a plan:
1. Lowering taxes on wealthy
2. Eliminating Social Security and Medicare
3. Adding voting restrictions to keep minorities from voting.
4. Eliminating choice
5. Ignoring actual votes for president and allowing legislators to select the electors.
6. Abolishing the 17th Amendment
7. Not allowing anyone other than white European Christians to immigrate to the United States.
8. Aligning our nation with fascists the world over.
This is interesting - Serbia, which has very close relations with Russia, is saying outright it will not recognize those so-called “referendums” in Russian-occupied Ukraine.
I suspect that Serbia refusing to recognize Kosovo’s independence has a good deal to do with their stance on this particular matter. All that being said, the Serbian government still remains opposed to sanctions on Russia for their illegal invasion, occupation and land-grab in Ukraine.

The worst of Hurricane Fiona hit St. Anthony last night. It damaged our car, ripping off the panel below the passenger door. The car is still driveable, so this morning we left St. Anthony and came to St. Barbe, where the landing for the Labrador Ferry is.
Tropical Storm warnings are still up for the area. The ferry service has been cancelled for three days, but will resume tomorrow. We have a reservation for Tuesday. The ticket agent told me that it was a good thing we have a reservation, or we probably wouldn’t get on.
St. Barbe is about the same size as our hometown.

I used to for a few years drive between Bloomington and Greencastle Indiana three days a week. Amazing carnage on those two-laned highways. I narrowly missed deer in my ancient Honda Accord on several occasions. I think that there is so much wooded area in NH that animals don’t need to cross roads as much—anyway, I travel a lot here too but rarely see road kill like I did in the midwest where it’s mostly farmland. (Actually witness the death of a deer and a Cadillac when cycling with a group one morning; we spooked the deer that was feeding adjacent to the interstate. The deer ran as we passed over the highway and went into the road just in time for us to see it collide with a new-model Cadillac—just destroyed the front end and the deer of course was just a bag of bones and meat in the aftermath.)

Many times roadkill becomes inedible precisely because of the bolded part. The bones shatter and the small needle-like shards invade the meat. Glancing blow from a front panel is best.

For one thing, I don’t think FDR was playing golf after he contracted polio at the age of 39 in 1921. As for FFVCS’ handicap - methinks it involves using only a putter and trying to get the ball past miniature windmills or into the clown’s mouth.

re: #138 Dopamine Fish
Former House Speaker Tip O’Neill was known for calling putts good if they were “within the leather” (i.e. from the bottom of the putter to the lower part of the grip). Over the years, his “within the leather” range gradually expanded - to the point that fellow Congress critters gifted him a 5 or 6 foot putter with just the tiniest bit of leather at the top. But that was back when the 2 parties could, you know, actually have fun playing a round - and not be engaged in some dick measuring contest.

Contrast that with Kurt Busch withdrawing from the NASCAR cup series after a very bad concussion in July during qualifying at Pocono Raceway. At first he was only going to be out until the playoffs started, but then it became clear that he was not recovered, so he is out for the rest of the season. I think NASCAR is far more cautious about this sort of thing since people remember how Dale Earnhardt died in 2001.
The NFL absolutely has a problem with concussions and CTE, and this guy shouldn’t have been allowed to go back on the field.

My wife is watching a KERA/NPR show about the rise of FM radio and DJs.
Program managers were created by the government because DJs were playing records from black artists in the 50s.
They also mentioned that, back then, some managers would bring bribes, like TVs or cash, to have then played. As part of the red scare, the House called this one DJ in, who said that everyone did it. Dick Clark was called in and he said “oh ho, I dont accept them, that would be un-American. The first jockey lost his job and house and was dead by 44.

One of the most fascinating movies ever of a true engineering fuck-up. I first saw it in a control systems class in college 45 years ago and was always struck by how calmly the man walked off the bridge right down the center line where the rolling was at its minimum. The bridge was designed with solid sides which allowed the wind to blow against the sides and stimulate the bridge to start moving. That day, the winds were blowing at a velocity that caused the oscillations to continue building until…
Bridges aren’t built that way any more.

Post WWII Italy has been a long-running disaster as far as governments. Turning them over quite quickly, the fundamental problem no doubt lies deep in history.
Indeed, I think it is the longevity of the history of the Italian peninsula that is part of the problem.

Yikes! This woman is a real, live, pedigreed, literal fascist in the original sense. She joined the MSI (Italian Social Movement) in 1992, when she was 15, and later became national leader of the student branch of its successor, the National Alliance. She was a publicly outspoken admirer of both Mussolini and MSI founder Giorgio Almirante, a Mussolini-era fascist journalist and Nazi collaborator. He was indicted for ordering the execution of captured partisans in 1944 and escaped the gallows only because of a general amnesty. He retired in 1977 and died in 1988, one day after two other fascist leaders, Dino Grandi and Pino Romualdi. All three men were quite old, 73, 92, and 74 respectively and there has never been any evidence that the deaths were anything but coincidence, though conspiracy theories abound.
